Elbows+Knees_Bath & Body Care | Smell Goods '98™

Two weeks ago, in the HyperPigmentation post, I mentioned that the increase of melanin in my skin is a gem, because one of the gifts is slowing down the process of skin aging.  Well I'm certainly not taking that for granted.  Two areas that I give extra TLC to are my elbows and knees.  It's possible that those with an increase in melanin can get by without as much concern, care, and adverse effects to those areas, than those with less melanin.  But why neglect something that's so easy to take care of?  When I was a young child and teenager, I remember admiring my mother's legs--so beautiful and fit.  She is now in her 60's, and I am still admiring them.  Her youthful knees look so good in a pair of shorts.

Skin on elbows and knees naturally tend to be dry, due to the lack of oil glands in those areas.  Being used more than other body parts, daily, the elbows and knees become flaky, chapped, rough, and scaly.  With the warm weather gracing you with its presence, make sure your elbows and knees are making a healthy appearance.

Dry and discolored skin on elbows and knees, can usually be repaired with these two steps:

  • Exfoliation- Help in the regeneration of new, healthy skin, by gently removing dead skin cells.  Do this 2-3 times a week. 
  • Moisturize- If you are using a body polish in step #1, then you are already sealing in moisture.  However, your elbows and knees will not object to adding a bit more lotion or emollient.   Moisturizing right after a bath or shower is best (45-minute window).   Remember, when you are giving that bit of TLC to your hands, feet, and neck at bedtime....love to knees and elbows, too. 

If dry, rough elbows and knees are a problem for you, try the tips above.  You will notice a difference.  

Don't have those problems?  Good.  Add the tips above to your bath & body regimen, and continue to have healthy looking elbows and knees.

Once a week to remove soak your feet in warm water filled with peppermint oil (2 tsp.), Epsom salt (1/4 cup), and to sanitize use hydrogen peroxide in the water (equal part to the amount of water). After soaking for 15-20 minutes scrub your nails and toes with a nail brush designated for just your toe nails using soap and rinse. Now it is pumice stone time! Scrub away those calluses girls! Apply a nice emollient moisturizing foot cream or lotion to your feet and ankles, I love MK Extra Emollient Night Cream. How to Make an Oatmeal and Brown Sugar Scrub

Making your own natural oatmeal and brown sugar body scrub is fun, simple and easy on your budget. It smells great too. Read on to learn how.Things Needed:Ground OatsMedium BowlBrown SugarAloe VeraLemon juice1. Place 2 tbsp. of ground oatmeal in a medium bowl. Oatmeal is hypoallergenic and full of amino acids that nourish and moisturize the skin. Oatmeal is perfect for people with sensitive skin, as it is a natural anti-inflammatory; it gently exfoliates and cleans, and soothes dry itchy skin.2. Measure 2 tbsp. of brown sugar and add it to the bowl. Brown sugar contains a number of the finest oils from all over the world, and for that reason it is used as a natural moisturizer in many skin care products. Brown sugar will rejuvenate skin while gently removing dead skin cells.3.Add 2 tbsp. of aloe vera to your scrub mix. Aloe vera is famous for it's burn soothing effects, but it is also a gentle cleansing agent and moisturizer. Be sure that you purchase 100 percent aloe vera gel or squeeze the aloe directly from a live plant.4. Squeeze in 1 tsp. of lemon juice. Lemon is a natural gentle astringent that will help to clear and refine pores and eliminate acne without over drying the skin. If you have oily skin, add an extra tsp. of lemon juice to the mix.5. Stir the ingredients until your oatmeal and brown sugar scrub has an even creamy consistency. Apply the scrub to damp skin, gently massaging with circular motions. Fighting Acne

Fighting AcneAcne is a condition that typically is associated with puberty and does occur frequently during those years but can extend or surface during middle aged years. Acne is caused by the increased production of sebum and as a result of this increase pores become blocked by not only sebum but by dead skin cells. This results in pimples or boils that present themselves not only on the face but also on the chest, back, and upper arm area. The causes of acne are also hormonal related. To cure your acne you've got to balance your hormones. When hormones are out of balance skin oil production goes into overdrive aggravating acne.Common sense ways to treat acne include:• rest, relaxation, fresh air and exercise• Don't squeeze spots• Don't use massage on acne• Avoid oily creams in Acne Treatment, especially those with Saturated Fatty Acids like Shea Butter, Cocoa Butter and Macadamia Oil..• Healthy diet - Fasts and vegetarian diets are cleansing to the body and it’s circulatory and lymphatic systems. These cleansing treatments may well be worth consulting a dietician or holistic practitioner for guidelines as to how to effectively incorporate such treatments with combating Acne.
