How to Find a Mentor

iStock_000009172087XSmall-150x150.jpgI replied to a question this week on LinkedIn and thought I’d share my thoughts with you on the topic of mentoring. Here is a short excerpt from the comment and subsequent question submitted:

“I don’t know how to navigate the professional world. It is like I am an outsider looking in. As an African American woman, I don’t have any willing connections in my family. I am actively networking, taking classes to gain new skills, writing blogs, and interning; this way I can groom myself into the professional I want to be…”

My answer went like this:

Thank you for your note & for expressing your challenges so honestly. I will share that I have been mentored and I have mentored. In most cases where I was on the receiving end, I actively pursued the
relationship. There have been both good AND bad experiences on either
side – I chose to learn from both.

One of the conversations that came out of the recent Women of Color Career Success telesummit I hosted focused on the topic of mentoring and where to find them. There were 3 strategies highlighted from the panel:

  1. Pursue mentoring relationships with people who already at a level for which you are aspiring – seeking a combination of mentors with similar backgrounds as you AND those who can share a completely
    different perspective;
  2. Peer-to-peer mentoring – reach out to positive, motivated colleagues and others within your field for idea/resource sharing; and
  3. “remote” mentoring – seek out books, presentations, and media that may have messages you can apply to your own situation for growth. If something really appeals to you, consider contacting the author, etc to
let them know how their ideas have helped you – social media really
opens possibilities here. You never know until you try.

“Mentoring” was very loosely defined in each case but the ultimate message was that you can learn from just about anyone’s experiences.

Lastly I will add these tips:

* Don’t be intimidated to ask anyone you have identified as a possible mentor for you. The worst they can do is say no. * You should not expect
someone else to invest in you what you don’t invest in yourself and
others. Definitely look at ways you can mentor and give back. * And if
you happen to run into that not-so-great experience, you can learn
lessons from that too. It just may be “what not to do”.

I hope others will chime in and offer their advice and perspectives on your questions.

Best success to you, Tanya

SistaSense.com - Why People Don't Buy Your Stuff Online The web is full of marketing solutions for internet entrepreneurs, but if you ask me, the only thing most online entrepreneurs REALLY want to know is why other people are NOT buying their stuff. Making more sales and more money is (real talk) what we all want, which is why I decided to create this quiz. This is actually just a series of questions that I want you to ask yourself. You can answer the questions in your head, but I think its best if you write your answers down. I personally like to get thoughts out of my head and SEE them on paper; this makes the process more real and easier to compute. Here are the questions: 1) Have you ever bought something from me. (Seriously, that is the 1st question). This is not a sales pitch (lol), you WILL understand this question soon enough. 2) If your answer to question #1 was "no" then skip this question. If "yes" ... a) How long did you follow me before you bought something? b) What did you buy? c) What motivated you to make your purchase? d) Was it something I said or something you heard? 3) If you have never bought something from me, give at least 1 to 3 reasons why. Alright that is the entire quiz! Fast huh? OK let's talk about your answers. At first your might think my response is all about me (lol), but you'll get the idea of where this is going soon enough. If you have never bought something from me, I want you to think about why. Are you not familiar with my products or services? Do you think you can't afford them? Don't trust me? Don't need what I got? Don't find value in what I'm offering? Perhaps you want to get ALL my stuff, but you are waiting for a discount, freebie, or something you can read? You can be honest (nobody knows the REAL truth but you). Think about exactly why you haven't bought something from me and in your response you will find the answer to why other people aren't buying from you. As simple as this concept is, believe me when I say that most webpreneurs DO NOT GET IT. Most of them (maybe you) think that even though they are not buying STUFF online OTHER PEOPLE will buy their stuff. They honestly believe their buying patterns are significantly DIFFERENT from the target audience they are trying to reach. BUT HERE IS THE BIG NEWS ... its not. The same things that are holding you back from buying from me OR anybody else online are just A FEW things holding others back from buying from you. Make sense? Now lets say you have bought something from me (woo hoo!). Well how long did it take you to buy something? Have you been lurking in my circle for years, trying to see if I'm legit or just another marketer? Did you wait for a deep discount before you bought? Did you hear someone say, "you just gotta buy this now!" OR was it something in my marketing that spoke to you and motivated you to buy? If you followed me for 2 years before you bought... If you went in circles trying to figure out what to buy BUT then eventually made a purchase ... If you kept your ear to the ground and waited to hear what other people had to say about me until you trusted me ... THEN KNOW THIS ... that is exactly what people are doing with respect to you, your products, and your services. Whether you bought from me or not, you have GOT TO UNDERSTAND ... PEOPLE ONLINE ARE JUST LIKE PEOPLE OFFLINE ... they are going to ONLY BUY what they want when they want it. The internet isn't a magical space where money flows out of other people's pockets and into your own. SO HOW DO YOU MAKE MONEY THEN? HOW DO I MAKE MONEY IF YOU AREN'T BUYING FROM ME? That is the real question you should be asking yourself. The answer on the surface is one I am sure you have heard. You have to build relationships, build your buzz, build your brand ... BUT WHAT DOES ALL THAT REALLY MEAN. Perhaps after reading a few articles and/or listening to some marketing gurus on youtube, you THINK you have a handle of what this means, BUT UNLESS you are actually making SALES RIGHT NOW... you don't. (Sorry to be so blunt, but its the truth). I've learned a few things about making sales online. Getting Folks to buy means: - Being Patient - Not Getting Pissed Off When You Share Your STUFF With Everybody and nobody bites - Knowing exactly when AND what people want to buy - Knowing how much people in your target audience are willing to pay for what you are selling - Knowing what real customer service is and how to keep people happy - Not losing faith because people don't bite when you posted a few links in forums (it ain't that easy) - Not being so naive as to assume you can make money without spending time OR money on your business - Not thinking you can teach yourself how to make money online when you are NOT making any - Having people in your circle who want what you have and GET what you are about - Having a list of solid marketing strategies that consistently work for you - Finding new marketing strategies that can improve your sales - When you say you are TOO BROKE to invest in yourself that energy translates into others NOT investing in you Why do People Buy My Stuff? For starters, I have spent A LOT of time analyzing when and why people DO NOT BUY. I learned a long time ago that you CAN NOT do the same thing and expect different results SO increasing your marketing, going on more social networks, trying to drive more traffic IS NOT going to work if the people who are currently looking at your stuff are not buying. You have to fix the "why they DON'T BUY" issue if you want to make REAL Sales. That being said, I've tried a TON of different ways to make sales in THAT PROCESS I discovered strategies that WORK especially with my target market (black business women online). I am as real, transparent and authentic as I can possibly be. Folks see enough 'BS' online worth ignoring. I've been able to build my visibility thus far by proving to people that I actually know what I am talking about and NOT being afraid to just keep it simple. I don't call myself a million dollar diva and I haven't hit six figures yet (lol). I don't post pictures of me in front of big houses or fancy cars. I've never professed to have or know anything beyond those things that have allowed me to build a steady, lucrative, personally full filling and financially rewarding online business. If you are putting out an image of you online that isn't a reflection of your authentic self, don't be fooled into believing people can't see the REAL YOU. As I always say, "people have to buy what you say before they will buy what you sell." If they are NOT buying you, that's part of the problem. As for me... - I'm not afraid to take risks. - I've been doing this for years. - I may cry a little when things don't work, but I dust myself off and keep going. - I know Oprah is no different than me. Its all about drive and determination. - I don't TELL FOLKS about my drama. - I keep it professional and about business all the time. - I am not afraid to share what I know. - I give information. I give of my time. And people GET me because of my desire to GIVE. - I have customers who like me and tell other people about me. - I have systems and marketing strategies that clearly work for me (I AM A WORK AT HOME MOM) - I never waited for someone to do STUFF FOR ME or GIVE ME ALL THE ANSWERS. - I understand that people ONLY buy when they are ready. - I figured out how to make extra money from adsense, ad sales, and affiliate marketing. - I always try to do something new. - I always stick to the old things that work and NOT get distracted by trends. - I'm STILL HERE. If you are still trying to figure out why people aren't buying from you, let me ask you this. Why haven't you joined my sista circle, and learned exactly how I get people to buy from me online? I know, I know... some how I manged to plug me into your equation (lol). BUT seriously... by now you have figured out that selling online is POSSIBLE its just not as easy as most folks think. Waiting for EASY to come will only make it harder for your business to grow. Get with the program, join the SistaSense Circle or at the very least start listening to my conversations on how you can improve your sales online.

The Past is NOT your Friend!

This past week I was revisited by the “PAST”. Not just the regular passing by past. I mean the “almost took me OUT past”! I mean the “left me for dead” PAST! I had a choice to entertain it or ignore. I had a choice to ask why or keep on moving. I had the choice to give "it" a tongue lashing or let it ride. I chose to let it ride but I also looked upon it as a teachable moment. The lesson learned was when you get passed an area of your life in which you were deeply connected which scrapped you to your core, the enemy will ALWAYS find a way to bring it back to your remembrance. When you are progressing wonderfully the enemy is infuriated! When you are no longer being used and wallowing in defeat, the enemy wants to make you regress and fall off. This is the very reason why we must be resilient in our faith and always make advancements toward GREATER.

We can NOT be-friend the past! It's the past for a reason. Use it only as a point of reference to remind you from whence you came and use it as a testimony to help bring someone else out of the pit you were once in. I thank the LORD that HE allowed me to pass this test with flying colors! I also thank HIM because I was able to remember that dark, miserable, abandoned, hellish, depressed and low state that the HE brought me out of. I am now able to look back and say if it had now been for the LORD on my side!

I say all of this to say... Always be GRATEFUL for your past but never, ever be-friend your past. Just look up and say, "Thank You"!

Losing YOU is NOT an Option!

It hurts and has been hurting oh so very long!

But still Losing YOU in NOT an Option!

No one knows my pain! No one knows the tears that I cry and have cried!

But still Losing YOU is NOT an Option!

You don't know the load I have to carry from past and present hurt as well as guilt!

But still Losing YOU is NOT an Option!

How about all the times I have to go without because I can't make ends meet and it seems I can never get ahead?

But still Losing YOU is NOT an Option!

I'm lonely, destitute and so very misunderstood!

But still Losing YOU is NOT an Option!

I'm tired of stressing and crying and praying and going around in circles!

But still Losing YOU is NOT an Option!

Seems like no one cares if I exist or not anyway!

But still Losing YOU is NOT an Option

Why?

Because you were created for a purpose and it's hard to see that purpose when all you can see is PAIN. Yes, I know. I have been there many times. Simply put, YOU need YOU in order to get to where YOU need to go. YOUR destiny awaits and although you may choose not to believe this, there are many people who are tied to your destiny and your greatness. They are waiting and needing you to change your perspective of your life by taking your eyes off your issues and focusing on the path of being re-built for the sole purpose of reaching your destiny.

The world needs something that no one can give like YOU. Therefore, get yourself up, shake the dust from your feet and move out of the place of hurt, pain, guilt, anger, depression and resentment. Allow yourself to be placed by our FATHER into HIS hands and allow HIM to put the pieces back together again so that you can RUN on and see what's ahead of YOU! What's to come is so much better than what's been! Believe this… Losing YOU is NOT an Option!

With Love ,

Dr. Nycole P. Lyles-Belton

Money and Finance expert Deborah Owens (deborahowens.com) shares how Women can build their wealth in this PBS Special (click here if you can't see the video above). Most of the time on SistaSense I talk about how to make money BUT truth be told IF you can't manage your money you won't see much of what you make. I discovered Deborah when she joined Black Business Women Online about a month ago. Shortly after joining the network Deborah took part in my SistaSense Circle, a telecourse group for serious entrepreneurs interested in building successful online businesses. As you can tell from the video above, Deborah Owens is already a published author, finance expert, established business women and successful coach, so why would she join my circle? Believe it or not, any good coach will tell you that you never stop learning. Deborah can teach me a thing or two about finances and money management, because that is her area of expertise. Building social networks and establishing a strong online presence is my strength and through the SistaSense Circle I've been able to provide her and other sistas in the circle with new ways to further expand their presence online. I'll never forget our 1st call together when Deborah said to me she knew she needed a strong online presence and needed to be on social networks BUT it was not until we spoke that she truly understood why these things were important and how they really worked. Building your brand and your business online requires more than simply having a pretty website, which is something many business women discover after they've built their digital spaces. If nothing else, today I wanted to tell you there is always room to learn new things EVEN when like Deborah, you've made it to the top! Moreover, as women entrepreneurs we can all benefit from supporting one another. While I can fix your website, I'll let Deborah show you how to fix your budget! We each have a unique gift to bring to the table. Make sure your gift is alive and present to everyone who crosses your path. Last but not least, I want to formally say THANK YOU to the 10 wonderful women who took part in my first SistaSense Circle last month. In case you were curious, here is what Deborah had to say about the circle... Great one on one coaching session. Loved your ability to keep me focused on specific actionable tactics that I can implement immediately. Your knowledge of Social Media is phenomenal. You get to the “why” of things by telling me not only how to implement but why it makes sense. Now I know why you branded “SistaSense.” You are one smart cookie and as the leading authority on investment literacy, I love getting an immediate return on my investment. - Deborah O. Registration for the next SistaSense Circle is now open, click here for details.

6 Sloppy Speech Habits to Avoid

1. Non-words

Filler words such as “um,” “ah,” “you know,” “OK” or “like” tell the interviewer you’re not prepared and make you sound like a Valley Girl (or Boy). A better strategy is to think before you speak, taking pauses and breaths when you lose your train of thought. Everybody utters an occasional “um,” but don’t let it start every sentence.

2. “Up-Talk”

A singsong or rising inflection at the end of every sentence creates a *tentative impression and makes it sound as though you’re asking a question instead of making a definitive statement. You need to speak with *conviction when selling yourself in an meeting. Bring your intonation down when ending a sentence to avoid talking up.

3. Grammatical Errors

The interviewer may question your education when you use incorrect grammar or slang. Expressions such as “ain’t”she don’t,” “me and my friend” and “so I goes to him” aren’t appropriate. Be sure you speak in complete sentences and that tenses agree. The interview is not the *venue for regional expressions or *informality.

4. Sloppy Speech

Slurring words together or dropping their endings impairs the clarity of your message. To avoid slurring and increase understanding, speak slowly during an interview.

Make a list of commonly mispronounced words, and practice saying them into a tape recorder before the interview. Some common incorrect pronunciations include “aks” for “ask,” “ath a lete” for “athlete,” “wif” for “with” and “dree” for “three.”

5. Speed Talking

While everybody is a bit anxious during an interview, you don’t want your information to fly by like a speeding bullet. A rapid speaking rate is difficult to follow, and speed talkers are seen as nervous. Slow down your racing heart by doing some breathing exercises before the interview.

To avoid rushing, listen to the question, and then count two beats in your head before answering. When you finish a sentence, count two beats again before continuing. Don’t be afraid of silence. Pausing is an effective communication technique. The interviewer needs a few seconds to process what you just said anyway.

6. Weak Speak

Wimpy words modify or water down your *conviction and in the end your position.

When you pepper a conversation with “hopefully,”perhaps,” “I feel,” “kind of” and “sort of,” the message you convey is a lack of confidence. Use power words such as “I’m confident that,” “my track record shows,” “I take the position that,” “I recommend” or “my goal is.” The language you use gives the listener an impression about your level of confidence and conviction.

Getting in to College: Tips for Communicating with College Admissions Officers

Getting accepted begins with getting noticed!

I recently read a
great article by Kerrie Troseth, a guidance counseling expert, on how to build a relationship with your future college admissions department. She recommends that students -- not parents -- make contact first. College admissions officers want to enroll students who are dedicated to pursuing their educations and who show dedication through "demonstrated interest".

So, how do you demonstrate your interest in a college? First, you need to do a little digging and find out why this college interests you. Check out the college's website, read articles and blogs about the campus, and check out campus tour videos. Once you have a pretty good list of questions and topics of interest, you are ready to introduce yourself to the *admissions officer.

How to get on the admissions radar:

* Establish communication: This gets your file started!
* Ask informed questions: Read through the college website and ask specific questions about the admissions process.
* Establish a communication plan with the admissions officer: When should you call or email with additional information?
* Request deadlines for the application and financial aid processes.
* If the college
admissions officer asks about your current high school courses, respond promptly. You should also ask for *AP or Honors course recommendations.

If this college is becoming one of your top college picks, take action and schedule a campus visit.

*Try to get a "custom tour" that focuses on your needs and interests, rather than a standard run-through.

*Get a look
into the facilities where you will be spending your time as a student (science labs for scientists, performance halls for musicians and actors, sports fields or courts for athletes, etc.)

*Pay careful attention
to dining facilities and their inhabitants. You need to know what you are going eat and who you are going to eat with for four years.

*If you have your heart set on your future major,
ask to meet with the department head
and ask questions about your future field of study.

*Tour all of the dorms
and try to visit in the daytime and at night. Communal living is a new experience for most people and you need to see if you can thrive in this type of environment for four years!

*When you find a
college that may be right for you
, see if you can participate in a summer program or camp by registering through the college.

As Kerrie
mentions in her article, most high school students flood admissions offices with applications to colleges they have never even tried to contact before!

My advice: Stand up and get noticed early! Not only will you have a much better shot at "getting in"- you also have a much better idea about the college that you are getting into.

You did it once—can you do it again?

Ladies—

You did it once—can you do it again?

If I have learned anything from working with you all, it’s this: the strongest and smartest businesswomen are those who ask for help when it’s needed. As a Micro CMI winner, I am working hard to take my business to the next level, and because I have already been given so much, I am hesitant to ask for more. I know, however, that Nell (and many of you) would tell me if I don’t ask, none of you have the opportunity to say “yes!” Therefore, I am turning to you, my newfound family, for support.

I recently launched my eBook titled Everything You Need to Know About the Security Clearance Process, But Are Afraid to Ask
and my goal is to make this eBook a “Best Seller.” Toward that goal, I need as many people as possible to purchase the book for $9.99 from on Thursday, September 16, 2010. This price is a one-day only opportunity! Visit my site to place your order: http://www.securityfirstassociates.com/launch/

My purpose for wanting to reach this goal is two-fold: Of course, I have written this eBook to help my business, but I also believe in paying it forward. I desperately want to do something to give back to the organization that gave me a leg up at a critical juncture in the development of my company. To that end, I will be donating a portion of the profits from sales of the eBook to the Count Me In organization. So…when you support me, you are also supporting Count Me In, and together we are all supporting more of the strong, savvy businesswomen out there who want to make a difference.

And, it’s a great book to add to your business reading list. Everything You Need to Know About the Security Clearance Process, But Are Afraid to Ask is a comprehensive but easy to follow how-to guide that teaches you how to get a government security & facility clearance, how to win federal contracts, and the like. It also includes a great list of security acronyms that every company doing business with the Federal Government should know.

You have all come so far on your own and have created a sisterhood like none other, with the power to change lives forever. The phrase “it takes a village” rings true to me. CMI M3, and the unique sisterhood I enjoy through its graces, are proof that many can easily accomplish more than one when they are of like minds and purpose. What better way to make a lasting tribute than by making a small gesture that can pay off in a big way for the one organization that has brought all of us together?

I am excited to see our dedication to this common goal, and appreciate you all for your individual talents and graces. You are each amazing people in your own way, and I look forward to learning many more great lessons from you all.

Sincerely,

Diane Griffin

President/CEO

SecurityFirst & Assoc,

PS Just by purchasing my eBook on Thursday, September 16th, you will not only be helping to support other enterprising female entrepreneurs, but you will also be registered to win a free Kindle! Visit my site for more details: http://www.securityfirstassociates.com/launch/
