As the creator of the Black Moms Club and the Black Parenting blog, I had the pleasure of interviewing Raven Symone, getting the inside scoop on Disney’s soon to be released animated movie, Tinker Bell and the Great Fairy Rescue.
Raven plays, “Iridessa”, a light fairy who brings light to all the little plants and animals. She also happens to be one of Tinker Bell’s best friends.
LaShanda: We’ve all grown up with Tinker Bell, how does it feel to be a part of the story?
Raven: It’s really exciting. If you go to my mom’s house, in my room in the drawers underneath my television you’ll find every Disney animated movie on VHS. When I first found out about this, I knew I had to be a part of it. I’ve always loved the part in Peter Pan where we have to clap to keep Tinker Bell alive. I’m thrilled to be a part of the story of Tinker Bell and I love being able to play such a beautiful black character.
LaShanda: What’s your favorite part about Tinker Bell and the Great Fairy Rescue?
Raven: I love that the fairies stand for amazing things like nature and friendship. They each have unique identities that can appeal to different types of young girls.
LaShanda: What can little girls learn from this story?
Raven: They can learn about being understanding of other people, being adventurous, and trusting in friends. And parents should watch with their kids because if you follow Lizzy, the little girl in the story who loves fairies and her relationship with her father who does not believe in fairies, you’ll see its also about communication and family.
LaShanda: We’ve seen you in so many amazing roles on television and the big screen, is ‘Iridessa’ different from the other characters you have played?
Raven: Iridessa is very different from ‘Olivia’ the character I played on the Cosby show to my character on ‘That’s So Raven’. She likes to play it safe, whereas those other characters were more adventurous, loud mouthed (lol) and take charge.
LaShanda: Do you have anything in common with Iridessa?
Raven: Well she likes to play it safe, while on a good day I’m adventurous. Like Iridessa, I am always down to help my friends.
LaShanda: We know Iridessa’s talent is light. If we had Raven the Fairy, what would your talent be?
Raven: I think I would be a water fairy. I like to go with the flow and I’d be able to stop it from raining, so it wouldn’t mess up my hair (lol).
LaShanda: Disney has given us our first African American Princess, the beautiful Princess Tiana from Princess and the Frog and now we have the lovable Iridessa. What do you think about these new animated characters of color and their importance to little girls?
Raven: I think Disney was waiting for the right time to come out with these very strong and beautiful characters and share them with the world.
I had such a great time speaking with the beautiful and talented Raven Symone, who I've been honored to also feature on my SistaSense.com blog as one of our Successful Sistas who's made over $400 million in her career!
I have to agree with Raven on two points… I think most of us sistas would love to be water fairies to keep our hair nice and right during those rainy days (lol). And as a Disney Magical Mocha Mom, I first hand see Disney’s commitment to diversity and the creation of characters that all little girls and boys can enjoy.
Definitely look out for the release of the new animated Tinker Bell DVD. If you’d like to win one, enter the Black Moms Club Giveaway: Disney DVD - Tinker Bell and the Great Fairy Rescue.

So you don’t want to eliminate your morning cup of coffee from your routine just to save a few bucks a week.
As a coffee drinker, I understand.
But what other ideas can you think of? No matter which books you read about money, you will never be completely satisfied with their recommendations because your life is different than theirs. What is easy for them to sacrifice may be difficult for you and vice versa. This is why it is extremely important to consider what you bring to the
budgeting table. No matter what source you turn to for financial help, you will still be a crucial part of the process.
Is what you are saving for worth sacrificing for?
This is the most important question to ask when you are thinking about changing your lifestyle to save for something you want. If you don’t want what you’re saving for more than you want your current routine, you will most likely not succeed in your efforts to save.
What Can You Do Without?
This is the second question you need to ask yourself when thinking about cutting back in order to begin saving. What can you let go of for the greater good? If you choose the things you eliminate from your spending wisely, you will not regret them or rebel against your own plan. This will help you to save your money successfully. Before you slash your cable bill, think about cutting back on going to the movies. Before you cut your grocery bill, consider not going out to eat for a month or two.
When you begin to review your spending in this way, you are enabling yourself to still be comfortable at home while curbing your spending outside the home on small luxuries. For example, before you change the stores where you shop, change the frequency with which you shop. There are many ways to begin cutting back and making small changes to save money. You just have to be creative while tailoring your cutbacks to line up with the culture of your particular family.
What Are Some Creative Ways You Like To Save?????

It takes time and diligence to carry out a successful business strategy. So unless your revenues are growing consistently and cash is flowing well then now may not be the time to take those golf lessons you dream about. Read further to decide if you should pack up your nine iron and head for the office instead of the green.
- Stragey and Fun. Sales, profits and cash flow are the factors that contribute to the livelihood of business. Without cash it is only a matter of time before you are forced to take down the "open for business" sign and close shop. Now I hope that you are doing well in your company and have the financial freedom that you desire. But if you are just starting out you may find that it takes more time than you originally planned to reach your projections. Remember the saying, "Time is money?" Although playing golf is a great way for you to unwind don't forget that each second you use on non-income generating activities is a second lost. So if you decide to add golf to your marketing mix be sure to do so strategically by building business relationships while you are having fun.

- Finding More Leads. One of your top priorities as the CEO is ensuring that your market knows about the products and services you offer. Marketing and sales are time intensive activities so be as strategic as possible. Some ways to find leads while golfing with colleagues are to inquire about business alliances, referrals, and networking in places that your target market hangs out.
- Lead Conversion. Once your game is over and you have a few leads the next step is to get good at closing the sale. There must be enough revenues in your company to support continued operations and business expansion. This applies for-profit and non-profit entities. It makes no difference whether you are running a sales campaign or a fund-raiser. Your primary objective is to get a commitment from potential buyers.
- Increasing Profits and Cash Flow. In business, maximizing profits and maintain healthy cash flows takes precedence over free time any day. You will be able to enjoy the benefits of being your own boss once your company has adequate cash reserves and can cover monthly operating expenses, contingencies, and investments that create new opportunties for growth.
In order to see how close you are to reaching these metrics conduct a financial review each month. All work and no play makes for a dull entrepreneur but too much folding of the hands makes for missed opportunities to grow. Your time is valuable and until you reach your sales capacity make a commitment to stick to scheduled income producing activities until you reach your financial goals.

Give value first- Be a resource to someone you meet. You have knowledge and information- Share before you ask.

When you meet someone- ask them what they have up and coming. Then remember to ask about that the next time you talk or meet.
Make sure what you share is interesting- Be the person that someone would want to seek out and connect with.
Be the one who offers relevant solutions, opinions or be the expert. Help each other solve problems. Be memorable.

African American Writing Journals
My family and I set up display booths at different events throughout the year. To keep things interesting I look forward to counting how many times a customer approaches my booth, looks at the display of writing journals and says, "Oh, what's this book about?" Usually, before I can say a word they have already picked up and opened the journal only to discover one small sentence at the top of each page followed by a full page of lines. Because of their eye-catching covers, our line of African American writing journals usually turns the avid reader's smile into a look of confusion. Or I get the "oh, it's one of those things you write in." phrase. And that's ok, these writing journals are so beautiful. Each journal's soft-padded (yes padded) cover features alluring artwork by artist Aaron and Alan Hicks, and Dorothy Allen. Some journal covers are sprinkled with inspirational messages and scriptures. Although the journals are not full of words, they do contain a small Bible verse and that's more than enough reading for those who love to write. Not only do they look fabulous, but the spiral spine allows the journal to open flat so the writer can comfortably write without having to break in the spine or eventually loose pages.
The "Sunday Morning" and "Virtuous Woman" journals are a favorite for Sunday worship or Wednesday night Bible study notes. I remember going to Wednesday night Bible study with a plain ol' yellow notepad. Later I would be disappointed when my husband or daughters would grab a sheet to use as scratch paper. But with my "upgrade", I dare them to take a sheet. What I like most-- once I've completely filled one journal I can place it on the bookshelf and get another one... same size, different design. And I might add, they look quite lovely lined neatly on my bookshelf.
Which African American journal cover is your favorite? When do you write in your journal? Are you a collector?

ACT
American College Testing Assessment
The Act (American College Testing Assessment) assess a student's knowledge in English, Math, Social Sciences and Natural Sciences. The test is administered by the American College Testing Program and it consists of four tests 35-40 minutes long.
Specifically, the American College Test was created to test college bound students cumulative knowledge in four different subjects: English, Mathematics, Reading and Science Reasoning. This multiple choice based test, which is usually administered in the south, is known for testing a student’s ability to recall formulas and fundamentals from the aforementioned subjects as well as a student’s ability to solve graphs. Students are graded on a scale of one (lowest) to thirty-six (highest) in each of these four categories. The four sub-scores recorded from these four respective topics are then averaged together for a composite score that is looked at upon universities for various purposes such as acceptance, scholarship qualification and then eventually class placement. This assessment does not penalize students for having incorrect answers as only correct answers affect the scoring. According to Mary Beth Marklein of USA Today, the national composite test score average in 2004 was 20.9, as a record number of test takers (1.2 million) were recorded. She also reported that in 2004, students tested higher in the reading section of the assessment (21.3), despite rants that the allotted time for this portion of the test is too short. The lower composite test scores throughout the years have created many jobs in preparing for the ACT. Test centers have been developed nationwide, and companies such as Kaplan offer strategies to taking the ACT along with practice tests (which are actual ACT tests administered throughout the years). According to the ACT official website, the test is given on six dates a year, at hundreds of locations, and students can take the test as many times as they desire, as the highest score is the only looked at determining acceptance. The traditional format of the ACT will now feature a writing assessment starting in October 2005 that tests students abilities to write a short essay.

Over the last few years, I have eliminated a lot of the social networks I have been active with; some of themwere giving me help, but most were where I was helping others. There wasn't agood balance. The lesson was soon to be learned.
One day in 2008, after volunteering all day at a fundraiser, I sat thinkingabout why my businesses weren't flourishing. I could have blamed it all on theenemy and his army. I could have blamed it on having too many good ideas at onetime. I didn't blame anything or any spirit. I looked at where I was so manyyears ago, 20 to be exact, and how I one major gift God gave me, no one, closeto me, heard; my singing voice. I remember being in one of the most elitechoirs in High School. You couldn't just sing, you had to sang!!! For 3 years, twice a year, our group had major concerts. We were magnificent! Yet, no oneclose to attended ONE concert.
Romans 11:29 For the gifts and calling of God are irrevocable.
I understood then as I understand now; everyone has their own life and it doesnot include anyone they don't want. What I mean is, when people decide thatothers are not as important as self, those people become nonexistent even ifthey are right in your face. So what do you do, push the issue? No. Do you getupset about it? No. You move on with the life God gave you. There is nothing Ican change about what a person desires to have in their life or who they wantto help or support. I have started to see that it isn’t about me. It’s aboutGod IN me.
Philipians 2:3 Let nothing be done through selfish ambition or conceit, but in lowliness of mind let each esteem others better thanhimself.
I have pushed my 'servant hood' to the limits by giving all of me to the peopleI know online. I love helping people. That part of me will never change. Yet,while I am helping them, what am I doing for myself. Nothing, but realized thetruth behind the failure and the success. It was time to help others see theirpotential and not let the PEOPLE get in the way of their blessings.
Twenty odd years ago, no one saw how delighted I was to be in this choir andhow I wanted someone to come and support me as a teen. Here I am now, presentday, and it is the same thing. Yet, I’m glad I had to go through this tounderstand how God could use me now. I realize that the people who didn't seeme then they don't want to see me now, but God has kept me for this time to bea benefit to His kingdom.
Now that I know God can use me, I am ready to share COMPLETELY the things that have been placed in my lap. I amno longer bitter. I will not hold back the gifts and talents God has given me,but I will keep this new found knowledge in front of my minds eye. Those that Iwanted to see me will never see me with the eyes they had then, which are thesame ones they have now. They will only see me with new eyes enlightened by theLord.
So with my new found eyes, I am sharing all those things that God has given me right with you. I am workingtowards leaving behind a legacy that is beneficial for my family and YOURS too.

I love to give you some new "make money online" answers when I get asked great questions. I recently came across a good question on my social network, Black Business Women Online.
"I am curious as to how people determine what their rates are on their blog or website for advertisers. I would also like to know how any of you might go about offering space for another person (like an author, entertainer, artist etc.) to sell their products or goods through your site. " -EvonnaBefore I get to my response, let me share these two cents. If you are interested in promoting your products or services via social networks, regularly browsing forums and sharing advice is a good way to build relationships and introduce your business in a not so pitchy way. We don't like the sleezy salesman types, but we do like folks who share valuable information. My Response:Great question Evonna: I sell ad space on all my websites, because it just makes sense. Once you start to build a following of loyal viewers in a particular target market (very important to note), business owners and entrepreneurs just might want to advertise on your website. The key thing to note is that you need traffic if you want to get the attention of advertisers. Solopreneurs generally start selling adspace any where from $10 - $100 per month (when they start out and are looking to attract their first real advertisers). When you start putting together advanced advertising campaigns, you might charge anywhere between $1 and $50 for CPM.... CPM means Cost per 1000 impressions. That means an ad banner or text link gets viewed 1000 times, and for every 1000 the advertiser pays you a certain amount. Most times you would charge a minimum fee if you were going to setup CPM ad packages or a Rate Card, so people can see what your ad prices are. This is all stuff you can Google, but I have written a beginners guide to help newbies with these questions, as well as explain how I got started selling advertising on my website and the tools that I used. It's call my Easy Ad Builder Hand Book. Here is a discount code, if you decide to download it. Code: SELLADS. Usually when folks ask me about selling ad space, they also want to learn more about Making Google Adsense Money. I have created a few audio mp3s and video tutorials on Using Google Adsense. You can download them from this link. Lashanda

12 Ways Adult Students Can Pay for College:
1. Maximize your federal aid eligibility by reducing assets and paying down consumer debt.
2. Submit the *FAFSA as soon as possible after January 1st. You don't have to wait until you are admitted to a program to apply! This application also serves as the application for the *Workforce Improvement Grant, a scholarship awarded to adult students based on financial need.
3. Research and apply for scholarships early. Scholarship deadlines can occur as early as six months prior to the semester for which they are intended!
4. Utilize community programs that offer assistance with childcare, rent, utilities, food, clothing, fuel, prescription medicines, and medical or dental care. This allows you to use money for college that would normally pay for these other items.
5. Ask about fee waivers. Many colleges will reduce or waive admission application, testing, or other fees for low income students.
6. Ask about tuition payment plans. Many colleges offer tuition or deferred payment plans.
7. Accelerate your degree program by taking college level proficiency exams, such as *CLEP or *DANTES, or departmental exams. Ask about the possibility of receiving credit for paid work experience, professional licensure, certification, military service or other training.
8. If you are working toward a bachelor's degree, consider taking general education courses at a *community college where tuition is generally much lower.
9. Take advantage of distance learning opportunities in lieu of traditional campus-based classes where possible. Tuition for these classes is often much less.
10. Reduce the cost of textbooks by borrowing them from someone who has already taken your class or borrowing them from the library. If you must buy books, shop online for the best price or buy used books. At the end of each semester, sell them to other students or online instead of taking them to the bookstore.
11. Explore Tuition Assistance Programs (TAP) offered to employees of larger corporations.
12. Take advantage of federal tax benefits, such as the Hope Credit and Lifetime Learning Credit.
