Don't Forget the Achievers

In recent weeks we have seen the stories of the deadly confrontations between young Black men and law enforcement all over this country.  And in Baltimore we saw the anger and frustration of some of its residence manifest itself in the destruction of their own neighborhood.  I have heard some commentators opine that these actions are the result of institutional failures of government and business to address the systemic problems Blacks, and in particular, young Black males, face everyday in their communities.

There is no doubt that the concerns are real and they have to be addressed, but it is also true that sometimes a thug is just a thug.  You can try to deflect responsibility, but the reality is that some people make the conscious decision to be unlawful.  So when some try to give these thugs a pass, what they do is divert attention from those young Black people who have chosen to do it the right way.

This is graduation season, and we have more Black men and women graduating from college than at any other time in history.  They have chosen to be more.  And it is hoped that them being more will allow of us all to be more.  We need to congratulate these students who didn’t take the easy way out.  Those who put in the effort to obtain an education.  And while they may not quite understand the importance of their achievement today, it is certain that their educational achievement will have a positive impact on their communities.

So if you see someone who is graduating college, congratulate them for persevering.  And thank them for choosing to affect change in a positive and constructive manner.

Rich Weaves

Being a business owner and helping others reach their goals is one of the most enjoyable feelings to have. Everyday I put 110% into our company and the individuals who are affiliated with us. It wasn't to long ago that I was just like a lot of people out in the world who wanted change and a better life. I had dreams and aspirations of becoming a successful business man and some day building an EMPIRE in the Hair Industry. I had been working in the hair industry for about 5 years now but wasn't seeing and getting the results that I wanted. I questioned my work ethic and all the swirling questions we have when it comes to becoming successful. I wanted to have success that moment, not understanding that it takes time to get where we need to be in life. You have to have a plan. In my mind I knew what I wanted which was to own my own hair company but was scared to step out on FAITH in fear of FAILURE. You see this is where allot of us stop dreaming, lose motivation, and most importantly lose our FAITH. When it comes to your FAITH, Im here to tell you that no matter what it is that you want in life never give up on it. FAITH is powerful and can win the will of many ways, YOU just have to guide the ship! Helping others is the fuel to my FAITH there is no more gratifying feeling to help another man/women see there potential and watch them go GET IT.....no matter if its a business, relationship, family, etc. Doors have opened for me that I have never imagine would be open, and I am blessed to surrounded by individuals who embrace the opportunity our company has placed before them. I understand that we all fear what we don't know or understand but I can say that Rich Weaves can be the corner stone to the foundation of anyone who wants to achieve there goals in the Hair Industry. Its ok to be afraid of FAILURE, but remember to have FAITH it will win every time. Take a step out on it and watch how GOD works and puts you in position for success.......We DID!!! I hope this small blog helps to be an inspiration to everyone who reads this, we are here to help wherever you need. We stand committed to YOU and your vision so lets set this INDUSTRY ON FIRE!!!!! How to Gain Self Confidence

Sometimes our self-confidence is shaken when we make decisions that are not supported by family, friends or people we respect.  When we feel that we are by ourselves regarding our choices, it is important to apply the universal law of cause and effect. Acknowledging others rights to their opinions opens the way for us to receive the same treatment. The adage shows itself over and over, what you do unto others will be done unto you.

Remember you can create the life you want to live by your actions. Being gentle and loving yourself is the way to bring that behavior into your life from others. Although it may not feel apparent, life supports you. The universal order of life does support you. This may sound airy-fairy, but it is a real and important principle to believe in when feeling challenged. Understanding that everyone has a right to live and think as he or she chooses removes the emotional conviction that others opinions are personal attacks. Each adult is their life decision maker, and one’s opinion does not overthrow anyone else’s choice.

Your ability to hold this idea and conduct yourself on this principle will govern others manners when engaging or having a relationship with you.

Valuing yourself is a requirement for a successful life. Lacking self-worth is mirrored back to us through our personal and work relationships.  The characteristics of caring and respecting yourself are reflected in how you address other people’s degrading and dismissive attitudes. Life already supports you; you are here. The statement, "you are an accident", is only an attempt to devalue your existence. It is your primary responsibility to embrace and love yourself.

Sometimes we allow the opinions of others to reign over our internal voice. That is a sign that we need to stop and remember what is important to us. Getting clear about the way you choose to live your life and what you value gives you the strength to make seemingly hard choices. You regret less when your actions are decided from how you choose to be in this world. Living this way opens you to new ideas and activates your potential.

Aiming for a successful life based on your values can sometimes feel like a struggle but the end results are worth it. Gaining self-confidence is the practice of making and moving forward with your decisions that are founded on what is important to you. Every opportunity you have to apply this principle will help you become self-confident authentically.

The Emperor’s New Clothes

0

Empire. Who is the real target audience? Over 60% of African American viewers tune into Fox weekly to watch the one hour drama, but by industry standards, is that really enough to catapult the show to top ratings and garner the mainstream attention and advertising dollars considered acceptable enough to renew a show for another season? Black Americans are only 12-15% of the US population, so I seriously doubt it is African American viewers alone who are securing Empire in this top spot. According to TV by the NumbersEmpirehas consistently topped the ratings of Criminal MindsThe 100, and Modern Family, all competing shows airing at 9PM EST on Wednesday evening. It has the highest share of viewers ages 18-to-49.

While it is exciting to have talented Black artists grace the primetime screen of a weekly drama, are the themes of Empire “refreshing” as some has described them, or are these characters dressed in a royal suite of The Emperor’s New Clothes?

Recall that the emperor was convinced by swindlers to believe he was dressed in the finest royal clothing available, but in all honestly, he wore nothing new. In fact, he pranced around embarrassingly naked. Many African American Empire fans suggest this show presents a new perspective on the nuances of “The American Black Family”. I must ask two questions.

First, is this really what Black viewers see? Second, is exhibiting the nuances of “The American Black Family” the primary agenda of the producers and directors? I ask you which viewership is paying attention to the nuances and which viewers are focused on persistent themes of criminalistic behavior that often define Black mainstream characters and perpetuate negative stereotypes about Black Americans?

In the past two weeks alone, Entertainment Weekly has posted a minimum of 5 stories about Empire to its website. In reviewing these posts, not one story focuses on the family system dynamics of the Lyons family- unity, sacrifice, expressions of love. Yes, these themes are there if you sift through the sensational presentations of the more prevalent themes.

A story posted March 2nd to the Entertainment Weekly website reveals the true meaning of Cookie’s famous line “boo-boo kitty” translation-“bitch” to your face. In a post dated February 27th, Terrence Howard asks, “Why is TV showing something different from the reality of the world? Why is there a thing called censorship that stops people from hearing everyday talk? We use n—- every day. It’s become part of a conversation—why aren’t we using it in the show?”

Are you following me, or do you still see a “refreshing” presentation of the nuances of Black family life? Admittedly, there are Black people who use the “N” word in their conversation. Do you? Are you part of the reality of the “world” Howard is referencing? Do successful Black business owners use the “N” word daily? Do Black women regularly call another Black woman “bitch” to her face daily?

We all have indulgences. Pause for a moment and really watch Empire. Suspend your indulgence. Have you noted that this family’s success is based on their musicality? That their escape from systemic poverty and a life of crime is a result of their ability to sing, rap and entertain their way out of the ‘hood? Have you noted that the oldest brother who is college educated, but without musical talent, is not as favored as the two brothers who are musical artists? Could it be that Black families do not value education? For viewers with a negative perception of Black Americans based on racial stereotypes, Empire
provides a healthy menu of stereotypes to select from.

EW-1353-Empire_459x612_0If watching Empire is your guilty pleasure and you are excited to tune in every Wednesday, enjoy the show. If you choose to allow you children to watch the show, be sure that you are talking with them about the messages they are seeing. Do not be like the emperor’s honest old minister. Do not be fooled by the emperor’s new clothes. For it was the child in Hans Christian Andersen’s fable that declared “But he hasn’t got anything on”.

Five Monster Online Marketing Tips

online-marketing

one  Email Marketing

Email is still the most effective form of marketing and relationship building. It's a tremendous tool for building the kind of long-term relationship that allows you to convert sales. While many have concluded that the same thing cannot be said for social media relationships, you can and should view your connections in these networks as a way to gain more email relationships.

two  Referral Champs

By comparing your customer referral data with your social media data, you can often discover your more active and potentially influential customers and prospects.  A customer who currently does not buy from you that much may turn out to be your greatest potential referral champion, but they may go unnoticed and therefore ungroomed without looking.

three  Know Your Customers

You need to dig deep and really find out what makes your customers tick on all levels. That means knowing what their interests and hobbies are, what events they love to attend, their favorite music and TV shows, and how much they love reading to their kids. You might guess where this is headed: What do people on social media love to do? Talk about what they had for lunch and how they can further build their business. So it just might be important after all to really know your customers and potential customers.

four  Article Writing

Great content isn't great until somebody reads it, shares it, and links to it. It’s almost like the popular kids in high school, but that’s just the reality of inbound marketing today. It’s not enough to produce lots of content; you've got to get people talking about it and bringing attention to it.

five  Blogging, Blogging, Blogging ...

One of my favorite uses of the social media layer is the ability to draw closer to other bloggers that cover your industry or community. Today’s bloggers rely on social media as a lifeline to real-time information and as a tool for collecting resources; it also makes them much more available through direct communication. By targeting key bloggers and using the social layer to build a relationship as a resource, you can quickly enhance your overall chances of media coverage.

Food For Your Hormones

food-hormone

I remember all to clearly, 20 years ago, when I though 20 years was far, far away. Where did the time go? It's finally here. Those 20 years have come and gone, and I'm 43 dealing with all the issues that my mother and grandmother dealt with at my age, hormonal changes.

Hormones influence just about every physiological response in our body including, the menstrual cycle, the reproductive system, our flight/fright response and metabolism. They are our body's chemical messengers, and can be both harmful and beneficial. So, it's especially important for every woman to know the type of foods she should consume and the types to avoid in order to obtain optimal hormonal balance and function.

The right foods will provide your cells with the fuel it needs to make energy in order to do your body's work. The result?  Healthier hormonal secretions, and a more energized and invigorated you. Conversely, the wrong foods will cause your cells to produce more toxins and less energy, which will result in less hormone production.

Boost your nutrition with a clean diet that balances your sugar levels. Fluctuating sugar and insulin can be quite damaging to the body. Eat several meals per day to keep your sugar levels normal and your insulin from spiking.

There are always clean, healthy, supportive foods for everyone, regardless of your eating style.

Foods that support hormonal health

Phytoestrogens: Though estrogen cannot be obtained from food, plant foods contains phytoestrogens, which has isoflavones, a weak form of estrogen. Find your supply of phytoestrogen in soy beans, tofu, flaxseed, soy nuts and whole grains.

Dark Chocolate

Protein: Buckwheat, Quinoa, beans, lentils, nuts, soy, egg whites, fish (wild caught), chicken

Healthy fats: Avocados, Ghee, Coconut, Extra Virgin Olive oil, pressed seed oils

Herbes & Spices: cinnamon, tumeric, cumin, thyme, ginger, garlic

♦ Fiber: dark green leafy and colorful veggies, and fruits in moderation.

Foods that sabotage hormonal health

Vegetable oils

processed foods

alcohol

caffeine

Satuated fats

Hormonal imbalances affects women from adolescence through menopause. Help yourself and your situation by being proactive. Be consistent with your good, clean, balanced diet. In addition, practice other lifestyle habits like exercise and prayer, meditation, yoga, and other activities that will bring balance to your hormonal activity.

Lots of Love & Self-care

The winter months can be so unkind to your skin - wrecking havoc by turning hydrated skin into parched skin.  With the dry, cold air outside beating at your skin, cranked up heat indoors pulling moisture out of your skin, there seems to be no rescue for your epidermis.  Lost cause?  Absolutely not.  You just have to make a few adjustments to your winter bath and body care routine:

Step 1: Use a gentle grime fighter that won't strip your skin of its natural, protective oils, and that will also add to the conditioning of your skin.

Organic Love Body WashA pure organic, castile body wash! Lather up in goodness of sunflower oil, coconut oil, palm kernel oil, and glycerin! Organic Love is enriched with African Black Soap and Green Leaf Papaya to eat up those dead skin cells!

Step 2: No more than 3 times a week, your skin should receive some TLC with a scrub/polish.  Exfoliating eliminates dead skin (keratin) sitting on the surface, removes impurities from the pores,  and leaves behind smooth, soft skin.

Almond Whipped Cream ScrubA creamy body wash and exotic sugar scrub, with Sweet Almond oil to boot. Pick up your favorite sponge or puff and cleanse, exfoliate, moisturize, and fragrance your body!

Sweet Raw Sugar Honey PolishA skin delicious blend of golden crystals, for banishing dead skin; pure plant oils effective for mature skin; rich humectants for protecting the skin; and honey to boot.

Step 3: Add an oil treatment to your bath & body routine. Topping the epidermis off with wholesome oils (emollient) is the best way to seal in moisture.

MarinadeAn after-bath oil, that is great for those on-the-go days. Seal in the moisture after showering, by spritzing on this oil-free Shea Butter oil blend.

Pure Body BalmA head-to-toe deep moisturizing balm, created for those women who need a bit more TLC for their scalp and body.  Pure Body Balm rejeuvenates dehydrated skin, works as a protective barrier, and is gentle on sensitive skin.

Sigh. The silent expression given after looking over those fun, summer pictures taken of you in your twenties.  Those were the days - sun, fun, laughter and beautiful skin happily displayed under shorts and sleeveless tops. “When did my youthful glow disappear?”  As the body ages, cellular regeneration slows down, and skin begins to act differently, yielding dark spots, wrinkles, and rough, cracked skin.  Thankfully, plenty of wholesome products from nature can help you maintain your beautiful skin, and this puts you on the winning side - allowing you to grow older gracefully.

You truly are what you eat, therefore an adequate intake of water and nourishing foods work internally and the epidermis benefits from those positive effects.

In addition to eating and drinking mindfully, consistently use these three topical steps to keep your body’s largest organ conditioned, hydrated, and have you on your way to celebrating the reappearance of that youthful glow:

First, cleanse the skin using soap or body wash with rich emollients, such as raw butters and plant/fruit oils. The hydration process begins when water comes in contact with the skin, and the wholesome emollients seal moisture into the skin.  Forgo products with harsh surfactants, such as sodium lauryl sulfate. They strip the natural oils from the skin, and hinders the goal.

Next, slough off dead skin cells using salt or sugar scrubs, clays, or a natural fiber sponge.  Exfoliation is one of the most skipped steps in bath and body care, but is necessary for a radiant hue. Exfoliating the skin 2-3 times a week, softens rough skin, lightens hyper-pigmented spots, and allows for better absorption of other bath and body care products.

Lastly, apply moisturizers with liquid content and emollients (lotion/cream) to maintain skin hydration and soft skin throughout the day.  Or use emollients (no water content) such as body butters and body balms for sealing in moisture after showering, softening rough skin, and protecting the skin. Petroleum jelly is an emollient, however, it does not allow the skin to breathe as well as plant/fruit-based emollients.

Add these simple solutions to your bath and body care regimen, and you can expect that youthful glow to reappear. Say, “Good-bye” to sigh and hello to shorts, racerback tanks and short maxi dresses.

So, let me tell you about my adventure yesterday.

Yesterday, we celebrated a new year with King T.  A few months back, our daughters and I planned to gift him with a day at the U.S. National Whitewater Center.  This place is grand.  You can go and do absolutely nothing and absolutely everything, and will have a memorable time.

One of our planned adventures was a twenty-foot-above-ground obstacle course.  While waiting for our turn, we observed the small children and adults (including seniors) who ventured out before us. Although they all seemed to be getting through the course successfully, the concentrating eyes and clenched jaws were giving me pause.  But, it can't be that bad. Right?

"Next person", said the attendant. I go up the steps, she connects me to the safety rope, and looks me in the eyes sternly. "Once you begin this course, you have to finish it." Only thing I could imagine at that moment was a steel door closing between me, her, my family and everyone else standing in line. Gulp.

Twenty feet above ground doesn't sound too bad -- when you're on the ground.

Our Shared Perspectives

Once the course was over, as a family we shared exactly how we felt about that adventure.

King T. - What have I've gotten myself into. It was great, man.  Loved it.

Me- Ditto. But also, I took on each obstacle at a time. I did not think about the one ahead, and after each one, I stood on the platform feeling accomplished and determine to master the next.

Warrior Princess Z. - The first step was harder than I thought.  I did not try to control the safety rope, because I knew it would come with me. I was able to plan my strategy and not think so much about falling to the ground, because I knew that I could rely on the safety rope.

Warrior Princess T. - Well.... we did not have to ask her about her perspective, because we heard it (everyone there heard it).

Her Fight Overpowers Her Flight

My young lady snot-nose cried on the fourth obstacle. Do I blame her? Not at all. She physically displayed what we ALL were feeling. Although she was hesitant from the first step, never once did she say, "I can't do this. I don't want to do this. I'm turning back." I heard her crying behind me, and although I empathized with her, I could not, would not default to the "mommy is here" mode. Why? Because I know my child. Her fight always wins out. And to be honest, she likes for me to just be there, not hover (I like that about my children). So, there she was crying, yet each time I looked up (Warrior Princess Z. and I were finished. Woo.) she was finished with one obstacle and on to the next. Her daddy was just heart-melting brilliant -- encouraging her. The couple behind her were encouraging and the fifty plus people waiting in line were cheering her on.  They even clapped and congratulated her when she was finished. They understood. I was/am so proud of my girl. I did not hug her, I high-fived her and patted her on the shoulder and said, "You did good." She liked that.

As we walked and talked, I said, "I bet if we come back next week, you'll be able to do that course again." She replied with a resounding, "Yup." Back straight. No hesitation in her response. A determine look.

Don't you just love that?

We All Have It

Flight and Fight is within us all.

You know that feeling. That inadequate feeling.

Flight tells you to stay in bed; no one is going to support this project; you failed, why not give up; how dare you think you deserve to feel accomplished. And it's so audible -- that was flight crying from the mouth of my daughter.

Fight tells you to persevere; get your butt out of bed, off the sofa; make some phone calls; stay present in what you want to accomplish; this project will get done; how are you going to get support if you don't do; how will you know if you don't try; so what you failed, but did you learn?

My daughter is a prime example of how if you want it bad enough, if you want to overcome obstacles in the way, if you want to get down from a twenty-foot obstacle course, you have got to let Fight propel you forward.

So many days I have felt the warm caress from Flight. Fight reminds me that it's a trick. Revolt!

Flight is needed.  It's there for a very good reason. That reason..... Danger. So, if you're not in danger from your aspirations, don't rely on it. Instead rely on the safety rope called Fight.

Remember, when it comes to accomplishing goals, the only difference between those who succeed and those who don't is Flight or Fight.

Which do you choose today, Flight or Fight?

Below are photos of our adventure (one has a short video snippet of King T. on the Mega Zip, 46-foot drop, 1,123 feet zip).  Enjoy.
