Celebrity Kids - Teen Kids

Celebrities Kids | Celebrity Obsession: Are our teens too star-struck?

Following the lives of teen celebrities such as Taylor Lautner or Miley Cyrus are part of the normal past time for the average teenager today. While on the surface this may sound like the sort of thing we'd expect a young person to be doing with their time, this behavior can also lead to some major psychological issues that have far-reaching effects. In a recent study of adolescents between 11 and 16 years of age, two major categories were identified that pertain to how teens relate to celebrities.

The first category, called "entertainment social celebrity worship", consisted of teens that viewed celebrities as sources of entertainment and talked frequently about celebrity news. This was considered completely normal for the everyday teenager. These teenagers displayed healthy emotional independence. However, the second category called "intense personal celebrity worship" showed teenagers who were seeking a personal connection to the celebrity and often developed an unhealthy obsession. These teens, while trying to go through the normal maturity cycle, seemed to suffer from lower self-esteem and confidence than their peers. Their relationships with family and friends were extremely poor.

So this begs the question, "How can we prevent our teens from becoming too often with the lives of celebrities?" Well, there are a few things that can help. First, teens should be actively involved or engaged in school activities. Teens who have responsibilities such as an after school job or specific household responsibilities have less idle time on their hands. Also, teens should be encouraged to volunteer their time to serve in the community to develop an awareness of others who are less fortunate. Lastly, teens who are encouraged to have a spiritual foundation often have a healthier self-confidence and thus feel less inclined to seek out celebrities to idolize.

Guest post by Tanai Coleman | Featured in my free eBook Get Your Business Straight As a business owner you are continually marketing, networking, blogging and doing everything you can to get more and more paying customers. That’s great! I love to see small businesses growing. I just have one question to ask you. Do you know where all the money is going? Do you know what’s in your business checking and business saving accounts? Do you have a way to track revenue and expenses? Or is the money flying out as fast, or faster, than it’s coming in? In order to succeed in anything, you need to know what you’re working with. Your business is no exception. You need to know what you sold, who you sold it to and how many you sold this week, month or year, depending on what your business goals are. You need to know what’s not selling. You need to know what’s working and what’s not in order to be sure that you are spending your working capital in the right places. Don’t feel bad. Being passionate about your business is a great thing. It is crucial for success. However in order to be financially successful in your business, you must count the pennies. 1. Don’t avoid them Knowing is half the battle. Whether you just sold your first widget or you are on your way to becoming a Fortune 500 company, you still need to be well versed in what your business is earning and what you are spending. You could be earning (and spending) more money than you think. 2. Create a simple system Software can be great if you know how to use it. However an excel spreadsheet or even paper and pencil will get you started. The important thing is that you start tracking your businesses finances. 3. Be consistent You’ve just made a sale, now what? Develop a habit of recording revenue and expenses as they occur on a daily basis. Don’t wait. As a business owner you know that there is always another seemingly more important task lurking around the corner. 4. Review your activity weekly, monthly and annually One of the ways we improve is by looking at what we’ve just completed and saying, “Great! Now how can I do better?” That’s why reviewing is so important. Which of your products are your best sellers? Which clients continue to buy from you time and time again? Which widgets never sell? Reviewing your financial records will help you answer these questions. 5. Get Professional Help Staff your weakness. Your business is your specialty and your passion. If you are just not good at handling the money, find someone reputable who can. A bookkeeper or an accountant can help you get it all under control so you can focus more on doing what you love. Just remember, they may be the expert, but it’s your money and you still need to know where it’s going. In your business you are the leader. Successful leaders excel at the tasks they love and the tasks they loathe. Remember, take care of your business and your business will take care of you. ABOUT THE AUTHOR Tanai M. Guest post by Evelyn Bourne | Featured in my free eBook Get Your Business Straight The world is moving so fast right now, and as an Internet entrepreneur you may sometimes feel a bit overwhelmed at the pace of change. If you're a business woman who runs your company from your home office, you may sometimes feel isolated from the world despite the fact that you are connecting all day with customers and clients and vendors. But what if you had a group of trusted confidantes that you could consult with about how things are going with your business, ask for advice, share your knowledge and get feedback on your plans? A Mastermind group is all of those things and more. While the basic concept of the Mastermind group has been around for centuries, Napoleon Hill, author of, Think and grow Rich, and The Law of Success, popularized the concept in the early 20th century and it has become part of mainstream business practices. The Mastermind principle basically states that when a group of like-minded people come together with a common purpose combining their energy and ideas towards a common goal there develops an, ". . . invisible intangible force, which may be likened to a third mind [the master mind]." So, this Mastermind, this "third mind" that emerges out of the harmonious cooperation of two or more individuals, is the key to achieving more than any of you could on your own. Whether you join or start a Mastermind group here are three strategies for making sure that your group is successful: 1. Clarify expectations Each person may come to the group with completely different ideas about what a Mastermind group is and what they want out of it. If everyone gets their ideas out on the table and discusses them freely you can come to agreement on how you will operate your group. Clarify the roles and responsibilities of the group members and the structure and flow of each meeting. 2. Establish common goals for the group Even as each individual has goals that they are working towards, the group should come into agreement on the common goals of the collective. This is a prime example of the whole being greater than the sum of its parts. 3. Be transparent Harboring hidden agendas will hinder the free flow of positive energy needed to keep the group moving forward. You must be able to trust your Mastermind group as you should always be trustworthy. Each member should agree to keep everything discussed in their Mastermind group as strictly confidential. Participating in a Mastermind group could be just what you need to fuel a breakthrough in your business and in your personal growth. Meeting on a regular basis with other business women who have similar goals and aspirations can provide each of you with a sense of accountability for the goals you set, support for your ideas and a place for you to share your knowledge and expertise while you soak up the wisdom of your colleagues. Tweak Vs Twitter

tweakvstwitter

These days my blog has been collecting dust! Between banner and blog design requests, I haven’t had as much time to write as I normally do. But you know me, “busy means business”, so I never complain about being busy (lol). But seriously, have you noticed that you can’t open a website without being smacked in the face with 50 Social Media icons … “twitter me” … “facebook me” … watch me sleep (lol). I see some many sistas glued to their smart phones, twittering every minute and I wonder how much of THAT is adding value to their business.

Now don’t get me wrong... I’m on twitter and I see the value of social media marketing (I get may fair share of twitter sales), but if I had to make a choice … hands down I choose my “Tweak Technique” over Twitter any day. As the name suggests, this technique is all about regularly tweaking my business to make it better. As a matter of fact, I’ve been quietly tweaking like crazy these past few months and the results have been amazing! If you want my humble opinion, before you get lost in the latest social media marketing techniques and trending topics, focus on highlighting those areas of your business that need work and make them better.

For me, a few little tweaks have turned into more money and WHO DOES NOT WANT MORE MONEY flowing into their business? I normally only share my marketing techniques with my Smart Business Sista Circle (feel free to join us) BUT just for today I’m gonna let you in on my latest profitable AND productive tweaks.

My Recent Tweaks

#1: I spent the past weekend working on my Money and Marketing Newsletter for my BBWO members and sistasense.com readers. This newsletter now includes 60 of my best marketing articles, videos, freebies and exclusive offers and it’s all done and being auto-delivered to my subscribers (feel free to sign up to the newsletter). Now without having to rush to the computer every night, I can consistently share my BEST Marketing Advice to you and free-up more time to focus on other projects. This one tweak was sitting on my to do list for MONTHS, but finally getting it done has made a BIG Difference. What can you learn from my tweak? For starters if you want to build your presence and stay connected to customers online, you have to stay consistent. Consistency is what this tweak is all about. Beyond sales pitches and new products, I want the people in my circle to know that I'm committed to regularly and freely sharing valuable information. Believe me when I say that getting people to listen to you is the most valuable and hardest thing acquire online. While there are a few more things you can definitely learn from this technique, I’ll save those for later.

#2: One of my first money-makers online was the Search Urban Directory, an online search engine featuring black websites. For years I allowed people to submit sites for free and then eventually, I started charging $10. Now that msoy is one of the oldest and most popular Black Search Engines online I’ve decide to finally raise the submission fee to $25. This price is still pretty cheap, considering it’s a one time fee and a great promotional opportunity for website owners trying to reach African Americans Online BUT that’s not the real idea behind this tweak. In the past getting 4 new site submissions to the directory translated into $40 in sales, now those same 4 submissions equal $100 in sales! Again, while its important to get into new marketing trends, never forget that little old marketing and sales techniques still work. Tweaking prices on products that regularly bring in revenue for me is often times the easiest way to make more money without selling or doing something new.

I have more tweaks that I want to share, but this post is getting longer than I wanted, so I’ll save them for another day. If you do nothing else, I recommend taking the time to dissect your business. See if you can come up with a few ways you can make your business better. If you are stuck on how to start this process let me make a few suggestions. For the past few years I’ve worked on several projects that were specifically about showing other entrepreneurs the areas in their business that they can fix and make better.

I often recommend that newbies take it slow and start with the basics. For newbies in internet marketing, I suggest downloading my ‘Selling Your Products and Services Online’ eBook Collection. Here is a discount code for the next 30 readers who download this eBundle. Code: FIX01 | If you download now you can save $30 and get this ebundle for $19.

Selling Your Products and Services Online:
Three eBooks for Internet Marketing and Sales Beginners

Two 7-Day eCourses on Finding Customers and Selling on Social Networks

The Smart Business Sista Series:

The Women of Color Coaching Program:
Monthly Marketing Webinars specifically created for Women Entrepreneurs

My favorite of this is definitely the WOCC Program, last year my partner Richelle and I did 12 Months worth of training webinars for Business Women of Color on How to Market their businesses online and offline. The results were amazing because for those 12 months we gave them a constant flow of marketing ideas and different tweaks they could implement to make their businesses better. As a matter of fact, we did a What's Working Now Webinar so our members could show you their results. You can click here to watch the replay.

no-more-excuses

I looked at the calender and realized that in seven days January 2010 will be over. In seven days all the "New Year, New You" buzz will be gone! Before February hits, think about where you will be in seven days. Are you still pushing to take your life to the next level or have old year habits returned ... preventing you from moving forward?

For many sistas in my circle (maybe you), this year they REALLY want a business like mines, a website like mines, a life like mines BUT the funds are still low, the time is still limited, the support is still lacking. When I think about them and you, I know that I can't change your circumstances, BUT I can give you the tools to help change your life. [continue reading]

Do you need a side hustle?

side-hustle-sista When I was working full time, I always had a side hustle doing computer consulting. Extra money was always a good thing, but of course when I turned my online business into a full time work at home gig that was a great thing! Since December I've been asking you all to send me your marketing questions (here) and funny enough I see that someone posted a question on my myspace page.
"I need a side hustle, something that doesn't require home parties and I can do from home with my children. What does a person do that has no skills and isn't crafty?" - Michelle
My Response: There are actually alot of things that you can do to make extra money, without spending a ton of money to startup. I for one love love love the service industry. If you have a skill, chances are there are people out there who will pay you for your time. My first real side-hustle was designing websites and working on local computer consulting gigs in NY. Overtime I expanded my services to include banner design, print graphic design, and coaching. ... But I'm a computer GEEK so I love doing anything computer related, but the skies the limit when it comes to the service industry.
  • Starting a Home Day Care or Tutoring Program is easy and very popular
  • House Keeping Services
  • Virtual Assistant
  • Blogging, Affiliate marketing, selling eBooks...
I've tried a ton of different online ventures in the last 10 years. Last year, I took all my work at home tips and tools and put them into my StartupSista.com eCourse which includes eBooks and video tutorials featuring Online Business Ideas, How to Make Your first $1000 Online, the fundamentals to Starting an Online Business and the Startup Steps that I used to get my work at home business off the ground. ... Toot Your Own Horn

I have this friend I want to tell you about (and its really my friend, not one of those instances where I’m talking about myself but trying to disguise it). She’s one of my closest friends, so you know I think she’s special. She’s gorgeous, intelligent, smart (because they’re not the same thing…), FUNNY, enterprising and very encouraging. She likes to cook, she works efficiently with numbers…. I can go on and on. She has such a positive spirit and whenever I’m around her we have the best time ever. But y’all, I don’t know if she realizes all of this. Her and I talk about how we’re both great and have it going on. But I don’t think she sees herself as the dynamic creature that she truly is. Whenever she discusses her own value and attributes, she’ll begin tooting her own horn and then stop. I can’t even fault her though, because so many of us do that. And I used to be the same way, until my old roommate, another close friend, gave my confidence a huge boost. If you don’t toot your own horn, who will? What my old roommate taught me was this: of course we can’t wait for others to toot our horns and sing our praises. We must do this for ourselves. What was important about her lesson was the value of positive self-talk. Not only must you tell yourself how great you are, but you must repeat this often. And I’ve learned on my own how sneaky and tricky the mind is. Saying it once or twice won’t do, repetition is needed for any validation to sink in. Our minds need constant assurance that we really are the bee’s knees. Because for some reason, when we stop saying it, we stop believing and acting as if.Now my old roommate definitely knew her value and acted on that belief. And I saw that others saw this too and treated her the same way she treated herself. Its become such a cliche, but its definitely true that you have to treat yourself better than you want others to treat you. And part of that is hammering it into your own head that you are a creature like no other. Your positive self-talk and your confidence in yourself and your abilities will start to permeate your being; you’ll walk taller, hold your head up higher, and people will see this distinction in you and fall in line.I’m not advocating that you take this approach to self-confidence for other people. Its important to your own growth to value yourself highly. For one thing, a strong self-confidence will help to combat some of the fear I discussed previously. Because you’ll know your own abilities and have confidence that you can handle your aspirations as they come, you’ll be less likely to hold yourself back from what it is that you really want. And in those moments of weakness its easier to remember the things you’ve been constantly telling yourself, than it is to begin speaking lovingly of yourself when you’re feeling down. And in a way, telling yourself how wonderful you are is a form of self-love. We’d tell our children that they were smart, pretty and could do anything – why not tell ourselves? How to begin your tootingI think we as black women hesitate to hold ourselves too highly. First of all, its against the upbringing that some of us have had. We’ve been told to ‘be seen and not heard’, that we’re no better than anyone else, and ‘God don’t like ugly’. We’ve also been taught that its wrong to be conceited and that God rewards those who are humble. But again, whats wrong with speaking positively to yourself? We’d instill these same words of confidence and love to children, just because we’re grown now doesn’t mean we don’t still need to hear it. And the best person to tell us is ourselves. If you aren’t sure where to start, I’d start with reversing the habit of negative self-talk. If you stub your toe, don’t curse. Rub it off and say “thats ok”. If you break something by accident, don’t call yourself an idiot. Say, “thats ok, we all make mistakes. I’m not perfect.” Once you get the idea, take the initiative to say positive things to yourself. Begin the habit of paying yourself small compliments when the chance presents itself. When you wear your favorite outfit, tell yourself how beautiful you look. When you’ve had a good workout, admire your body in front of a mirror. Describe the body parts you like, and why. Try to do this out loud if you can. And if you’re a Christian sista, pull out some of those Bible verses that reinforce what I’m talking about. God says you’re “fearfully and wonderfully made” (Psalms 139:14). Who are you to disagree? If you feel silly doing this, what does it matter, honestly? Its all in your head. No one knows what you’re saying but you. You could think of it as nurturing the little girl within you. You could also think of it as positive reinforcement of the woman you already are. Whatever you think of it as, I hope you begin to appreciate your awesomeness on a daily basis and toot your own horn.from my blog, Motivated Sistahttp://www.motivatedsista.com

New Year...New Strategy

Out with the old, in with the new is a term you often hear as we leave one year and enter the next. If only it was that easy. The truth is, it takes more than a clock striking twelve, a kiss with a love one or few fireworks to change a current challenging circumstance.Whether you are looking to change a business practice or personal situation, it is going to take a lot of work and much planning accomplish that dream or goal. Is your problem lack of focus? Motivation? Commitment? What are you going to do differently in 2010?I heard a powerful statement from a family member. He said, "Choose to make adjustments in your personal, mental and spiritual disciplines." You have to make a conscious decision to change. Yes, there may have been outside factors in your life that caused you to get off track. BUT you can either continue to waste time dwelling on what was or wasn't or you can make a CHOICE to let it go and move forward. It is up to you. Are you ready to pursue that dream of owning a home? Is starting your own business on the list? What steps do you need to take to make those dreams a reality? Here are a few tips to get you started.Write the VisionThere is a saying in the bible that says without a vision the people perish (Proverbs). Dreams keep you alive. If you have nothing to look forward to, you will just be. I encourage you to get a journal (or dust off the one you already have) and outline what you want to do. Be very specific. If you want to change careers, write what that career will be. If you want to increase your income, write down how much you want it to be.The key to this is that you write what ever it is with authority. Use words like I am going to, or I will make, etc. Writing the vision serves a few purposes. It allows you to see what is in your mind and becomes more real. You can also share it with one or two people that you trust, so they can hold you accountable. But be very selective in choosing who that person will be. Not everyone will believe in your vision.Research, Research, ResearchOne mistake many eager entrepreneurs make is that they do not conduct enough research in the project, career or business they are trying to get into. If you are looking to quit your corporate job and become a home based business, you need to establish a transition plan that includes having a start up budget. What will your home-based business be? What is going to be your niche? Who is doing what you would like to do already and could they be a mentor to you in some way? These are just a few things to consider, but no matter what you are trying to do, be prepared to put in many hours of research. As you establish a foundation, you will see the benefits of this preparation in the long run.Connect with Like-Minded PeopleIt is very very important to surround yourself with people who are looking to succeed and working in their passion. You need to be around people that are positive and excited about their gifts and talents. Friends and family can be great, but they can also be dream destroyers.Join groups that cater to the type of work or idea you are looking to do. If you enjoy event planning, go on Facebook, Linkedin, Yahoo Groups or some other sites that may host groups dedicated to that field. You will gain a tremendous amount of insight as you look to venture out on your own. Ask questions and don't be afraid to join into discussions. You may connect with a future colleague or client!Knowledge is PowerAs you move through the above steps and begin to get a solid idea on what you are doing and where you would like to go with it, keep your knowledge and skills up to date. Sign up for some training course, subscribe to online ezines or blogs that cater to your topic of interest. If paying for a course is not in your present budget-no worries, the internet has a host of free information for you to help keep you in the loop! For example, using a tool like Google Blog Search will give you the most current information for whatever it is you need to know.Following these simple steps are a sure way to help put you on the track of success in this new year.Natasha RubinVirtual Assistant/Social Media Marketing ProfessioanlOwner of Gifted Assistant Management Serviceshttp://www.thegiftedasssistant.netFacebook: http://www.facebook.com/giftedassistantLinkedin: http://www.linkedin.com/in/natasharubinFollow me:http://www.twitter.com/giftedassistant

Don't set your goals too low.....

If you don’t need much, you won’t become much.–Jim Rohn (Jim Rohn’s Weekly E-zine – July 1, 2003)“All things that are truly great are at first thought impossible.” ~ Friedrich Nietzsche …Passive income is a dream of mine, it always has been. My husband is the active income earner in our family & with the active income comes the days and weeks without him home (one reason I am a stay at home mother). I have worked for active income and while I like the camaraderie I cannot say I always liked how my life was dictated in an effort to earn that active income; the late hours or working on Saturdays, the do more with less attitude. There are some items though that I do not want to give up to be a stay at home mother, things some say are impossible to have as a stay at or work from home mother. That is crap!Have you said year after year that you want to take the kids to Disneyland? Or maybe another house? Maybe all you want is to be able to get a paycheck and not have it already claimed by bills. I understand, for 2-3 years I have been saying I want to move yet not actually doing anyhting getting us close to being able to move. This new year we went over finances and determined what we would need to do to get where we want to go. We set a GOAL and it is kinda high up there. The major reason for setting a goal is for what it makes of you to accomplish it. What it makes of you will always be the far greater value than what you get.–Jim RohnYou don’t have to want to be crazy rich, maybe what you want is to be extremely comfortable. As in…-still take nice vacations,-drive a car that is not a traffic hazard (notice I did not say new),-have a house that is a makes you smile when you drive up to it,-have 6 months of living expenses in your money market account,-not have to put off your childs fup dentist appt because you can’t swing the copay on the work they need-be able to give to charities like you really want toWhat is it you want to fund? How are you going to get there? What is your dream/goal ?Got it, good! Now what are you willing to give up for it? Do you just want another job or do you want an income stream that may take some time to build but will leave you with time & money in the end?If you want the time and money look into passive income.Always Progressing.....
