New Spark

On Saturday night my company Women Empowerment had a dinner, it was awesome.  The women enjoyed everything.  I am excited that I made the decisions I did( venue, speakers, entertainment, menu).  Hearing the feedback gave me a new spark to push forward and to continue accomplishing the mission of Women Empowerment, which is to inspire, educate, connect women.  I am planning several events for next year.  It is just so rewarding to hear feedback postive and negative but especially positive about your company.  All of the women that was in attendance revealed that they enjoyed everything.  I hope that everything continue to be so positive.

Life On Your Own Best Terms

A friend of mine shared this.

Direct from Jay Everydaythebrand Everyday:

You don’t have to prove anything to anybody. You don’t have to live in fear of what others might think.

You don’t have to continue holding on to the negative habits and thought patterns that have held you back.

You don’t have to keep living under the outdated assumptions that have closed your eyes to some of the best possibilities.

You don’t have to weigh... yourself down with anger, resentment, fear or frustration.

You don’t have to settle for less than the very best you can be.

You can live, you can give, you can love and achieve.

You can take this very moment, with whatever it may hold, and transform it into a positive, enriching, fulfilling experience.

You can feel the truth and beauty of your authentic purpose, and take action to follow that purpose.

You can let go of all the burdens you’ve imposed on yourself, and live this day with a powerful, newfound appreciation for all you have.

You can choose right now to meet each challenge with positive passion and enthusiasm for the best, most meaningful possibilities.

You can choose, again and again, to truly live life on your own best terms*

Summer Scholarships for Internships

Salaams Dear Sisters and Brothers,
Please, please, please share the following announcement from the Center for Global Understanding (CFGU) concerning its 25 scholarships for 2012 DC summer internships. CFGU focuses on increasing the number of Muslim American students interning in DC-based advocacy, media, research, government, and non-profit internships. I have worked with CFGU and mentored its summer Fellows since its establishment several years back, during my time as the Coordinator for the Congressional Muslim Staffers Association and now as the Government Affairs Representative for Islamic Relief USA. I highly recommend the program for proactive, community grounded Muslim American students looking to increase their knowledge of public affairs and policy, expand their professional networks, develop their leadership skills and expand the reach and influence of the Muslim American community.
In particular, we need to promote the presence of African American Muslims in such Fellowship programs as CFGU and MPSN, that are fostering the next generation of American leaders. African American Muslims students are nearly non-existent in such opportunities! Our African American youth/college students need to claim their place along side their Arab, South Asian, Persian, Turkish Muslims sisters and brothers who have dramatically increased their presence in various DC-based summer internships over the past 5-10 years. So please share this important opportunity with the student leaders in you networks, Islamic Center youth groups, college Muslim Student Associations, etc. Organizations in our Muslim community, such as CFGU and MPSN, are making it possible for high potential students to access internships in great organizations.
If anyone (i.e. students, Imams, community leaders, teachers, parents) has questions about the above orgs, please do not hesitate to contact me (and the folks at CFGU and MPSN, they are both wonderful people). My contact info is below.  Please let me know if you and your community will be visiting the nations Capitol in the near future. I would love to greet you. Thank you for your continued support.
All the Best,

Jihad F. Saleh, MPA '06

Last week, I attended a NetworkPhoenix event. It was such a nice event! This is my second time attending an event by this coordinator, Gelie Akhenblit. It is always a five-star, red-carpet, event that includes numerous vendors, food, and drinks! Not only does she put on great events but she also has a social network feature on her website for members. There, people can connect, share business information, their website, Facebook and twitter information. I applaud Gelie for such a star-studded event. Excited for the next one!

I enjoy attending networking events because not only does it give me an opportunity to get the word out about my business but it allows me to step out of my comfort zone! :) I am forced to polish up on my business "spiel" and work on my firm hand shake and eye contact. I gave out and got a lot of business cards and met a lot of people. However, there are things I've noticed at networking events are not exactly Networking Event Etiquette.

Here are a few networking event tips to keep in mind:

1) Make sure you take plenty of business cards and information!

PROFESSIONALLY DESIGNED at that. I have received pieces of computer paper with information on it and once someone ran out of cards so they wrote info on a napkin. That is not professional and not a good way to give a "first impression". You should also have your "spiel" down pat so you're not struggling to find words when explaining yourself. At networking events you will be getting a lot of business cards so it is a good idea to write notes to yourself on the back of the cards.

2) Dress professionally

ATTENTION LADIES! DO NOT COME TO A NETWORKING EVENT LIKE YOU'RE GOING TO THE CLUB! :) Unfortunately, I have been to events where cleavages and thighs were the highlight of the evening! There are plenty of stylish, professional, affordable outfits you can choose from. Now, don't get me wrong, I understand that there is a possibility of meeting someone of the opposite sex at such an event that you may want to impress. But if they aren't attracted to you in your Diva-fit then why would you want him anyway? You want the men to take you seriously at these events. Keep it simple and look nice! GENTLEMEN you aren't off the hook either. I understand that jeans are becoming more common to wear because you can dress them up with nice dress shirts and jackets, but NOT ALL THE TIME! If you're trying to impress someone, no matter what year we're in, JEANS is not the route to go.

3) Go light on the drinks

Always a feature at networking events, are the drinks! I understand a glass of wine here and there may make the environment more bearable but if you're trying to build a business you might want to lay off a bit. I have had people who have talked my ear off about their personal lives or been in my communication box because they went over the unsaid 2 drink minimum rule. Keep it together and don't go overboard OR just wait until you're done networking . Remember you want to make a good first impression.

4) Be confident, positive, and friendly.

This is the time to show what you learned about having a good interview: give a firm handshake and direct eye contact. When meeting people and telling them about your business, you are conducting mini informal interviews! You should impress people with your clear communication, and knowledge in your business.

By keeping these few tips in mind, you should have a successful networking event experience. It is important to attend networking events because business doesn't come through the door if you don't get out of it. You want your business to be recognized at these events so you might have to attend up to 3 to 5 times. Happy networking!

Tamara Garrison-Thomas

Move Aside Fear

This past year has been a year of lessons.  I have learned so much about determination and being focus and creating a vision and relying on my creator to make it through.  Earlier in the year I was complacent with my employment and my lifestyle over all.  Then one day, my knee went out completely, I hit the ground and thought "what do I do now".  Shortly after I had the most painful surgery/recovery in my life and then I got depressed over whether I would get back to my normal physical activity.  Then to top it off, when I went back to work,my manager had spent the whole 2 months I was off sabotaging my work, character and reputation.  I was devastated, the work environment I went back to became a prison and I was in a full leg brace feeling down and out.  But through it all, I decided to change my attitude, during my therapy I amazed my physical therapist with my progress.  Shortly after returning to work, I went back to the gym and did modifications to my favorite exercises until I could do them as I used to.  The situation at work made me get serious about my entrepreneurial ambitions.   I started blogging more, networking more and reaching out to mentors to get guidance.  I also decided to get into direct selling, which is not natural for me but I decided to step out of my comfort zone and do it anyway.  I'm loving it and I'm part of a great company and family.  I've also had the opportunity to turn things around at work as well. I stayed prayerful and refused to let the Devil take over and retaliate over the wrongful actions against me.  I can now say six months later I feel stronger and more confident than ever and fear has no residence here.  I know fully that my healthy  father takes care of me and as long as I make the effort it gives him something to bless.
