Fabulous Black Woman February Spotlight!

February Spotlight ~ Veronica Conway Veronica Conway
I had the pleasure of being invited to a webinar several of days ago by Brenda Eason of BBON. The webinar was entitled Black Mastery Breakthrough. I didn't listen to it immediately, partially because I am sometimes sensitive to racial topics. I don't believe that we should let our race determine what we are capable of, and I didn't want to listen to a webinar telling me why being Black is a henderance or why we have it so hard. But then I remembered where the invitation came from...Ms. Eason, so I knew it was something I didn't want to miss! After the first 5 minutes, I knew that Veronica was someone I wanted every person I knew to have an opportunity to meet and be moved and forever transformed by her words.
Veronica was born the child of a former Black Panther who was incarcerated when she was six years old. Prior to her father's incarceration she had to attend school under an alias, she witnessed police shootouts and experienced death threats against her life because of her family's association.
At age 18, during an argument with her mother, Veronica experienced what she now calls identity trauma; when she discovered that the (white) mother who raised her for most of her life, was not her biological mother. she searched out, found, and reunited with her (black) biological mother. This was and still is a pivotal moment in her life as it set the stage for her inquiry into what it means to be human, and the meanings that people assign to commonly used words like mother, black, free.
Veronica has revolutionized the world of human transformation and peak performance.Veronica is a successful entrepreneur and founder of three coaching companies, including the Black Professional Coaches Alliance, the only coaching organization dedicated to the rapid psychological breakthrough of people of African descent. She is the co-founder of Phenom Consulting International, a company that provides life and media strategy for the entertainment and athletic industries. She has coached everyone from truck drivers to CEO's athletes, artists and celebrities. She is the creator of the provocative manifesto The Black Paper, as well as the first audio program ever designed to transform victim thinking in the African-American community, the Black Mastery Success Program. Humour brings out human in Us

By Shobhana Haldipur,humour2 Humour brings out the human in us Humour has an amazing power. It emancipates us from the oppressive, uncontrollable facts of life. It emboldens us, enabling us to accept our condition and move on. The insane man has no sense of humor, but the man in possession of it has a rational, realistic view of the world. He can laugh equally hard when he fails as when he triumphs. Laughter makes us human…— Andrew GonzalesLast year my husband took a very spirited decision. He decided to quit his job with the Tata Group to pursue a Ph.D. degree. Most of his acquaintances, not to mention his family, were astonished by his unusual decision. They were curious to know why at this juncture in life he has decided to do a Ph.D.He explained it thus: “It is now 21 years since I am married. My wife has suddenly developed the 7-year itch 3 times over. One fine day she came and told me, ‘Look dear, I am bored being married to you for so long; I now want to marry a doctor.’ This was something I never imagined as I had taken her for granted. I did not want to lose her, because I had got used – addicted, if you will - to her. I also knew her well enough to know that once an idea had taken root in her mind, she would not rest till it was implemented. I knew that it was no use arguing her out of the idea. My mind started racing on the options available. How could I remain married to her as well as ensuring that she got her wish? I quickly collected my wits and addressed her, ‘Dear, you’ve waited 21 years; do you mind waiting for 2–3 years more?’ Reluctantly, she agreed to wait. (In any case, beautiful as my wife is, I doubted if there was a willing doctor on the horizon. She seemed to be making a virtue out of a necessity, and I played along.) So now you know why I decided to do what I have done.”It certainly was a unique way of looking at things. Humour happens when one looks at the same set of facts in a different light. Or the same word in different languages, as we will see presently.A group of Indians were on vacation abroad. There was one Maharashtrian couple amongst the group. Maharashtrians are most comfortable in speaking in Marathi. However, since most of the others were comfortable in Hindi, one Mr. Lele wanted to impress one and all with his command over Hindi by rattling off a few shayaris here and there. His wife’s birthday was being celebrated by the group by cutting a cake. Mr. Lele held the first piece of cake and in ‘chaste’ Hindi, said, “ab main mere biwi ko ek ghaas khilata hoon.” (In Marathi Ghaas means a mouthful. Unfortunately, the same word means grass in Hindi, so what he said translated from Hindi as “now I am feeding my wife some grass.”) This had the group in splits at the unfortunate, inadvertent language switch.Sometimes, great humour is built around exaggerating commonly observed characteristics of groups and communities. We all know, for example, enough Sardarji jokes and jokes about absent-mindedness of professors. Given below is an example of the special characteristics as well as humour that is the stamp of koknastha Brahmins.Mr. Lele belongs to a community of Brahmins originally hailing from the coastal Maharashtra (Konkan), and renowned for their miserliness as much as intellect and their capacity of laughing at themselves. One such example involved another Mr. Lele who wanted to make a rubber stamp of his name. Instead of ordering a stamp with LELE, he thought of a brilliant solution that saved 50% of his cost and made a stamp with LE which he would use twice over to make LELE. Then he got a further idea. He stood near the court looking out for anybody named GOKHALE or DAMLE to whom he could rent out his stamp containing part of their names and recover his cost.

How to find the love you want!

This is the month of love. Yes it’s Valentines Day, but more importantly this is the month that was set aside to celebrate and honor Black History. During this month we hear and see lots of programming that chronicles the ups and downs of the black community, both past, present and future. But should we stop there? Should this be the only time that we really dig deeply into what’s ailing us or what we can do to uplift and better our community.Should this be the only time that we celebrate our accomplishments and the great inventors that are within our community? I believe we need to celebrate who we are on a daily basis. We should shout from the masses how proud we are to be who we are and where we have come from. We should teach our children, so they can teach their children and their children’s children how we come from and are a great, resilient group of people. We should look back and honor our ancestors and our elders who endured slavery, Jim Crow laws, lynchings, no voting rights, segregated water fountains, sitting in the back of the bus, segregated schools…the list goes on. They marched, went to jail, some were killed, but all have endured so that we could have a better day. We are now free to own businesses, eat and drink where we want, live where we want and yes we can vote, and have our vote count! Yes We Can! We are not where we should be, but we are definetly a lot better than we were.So how do we find the love we want? Look in the mirror, it starts with you; it starts with me. Let go of the poor self image that we sometimes hold onto. Let go of the negative view others may have towards us. Let go of the negative self talk we give ourselves. Let go of the fear and the word Can’t. Each of us have a unique purpose. We have been given an assignment to carry out. We have been blessed with talents and gifts. Let’s use them to uplift, inspire, encourage and empower ourselves as well as others. So where is that love? It’s within us. We are that love we’ve been looking for. Love your curves, so what they are a little bigger than last year. Love your full lips, love your curly hair. Enjoy and embrace your unique beauty you have inside and out. We can’t expect to receive love if we don’t give it; and we have to start with giving it to ourselves first. This February let’s walk in an abundance of love, let’s celebrate who we are and who we are evolving into. Let make new history. Let’s send ourselves roses and candy on Valentines Day. Let’s be the love we are searching for.“I have learned not to worry about love, but to honor its coming with all my heart”~Alice Walker (African-American writer and poet)Imagine Life...Be Empowered...Live on PURPOSE!www.MYESHE.webs.com

A Day of Empowerment, A Lifetime of Change

A Day of Empowerment, A Lifetime of ChangeWashington, DC (WomenPR.com) On behalf of My Sister's Keeper, you are invited to the 1st Annual My Sister' s Keeper Conference, "A Day of Empowerment, A Lifetime of Change." The conference will be held on the 21st of July, 2007 from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. at the Best Western Hotel in Lanham, MD. Our goals for the Conference are simple, but bold: to raise awareness of the common bonds that women share no matter their backgrounds, to learn how to encourage each other instead of tearing down and to empower them to be the best they can be in life no matter the circumstances. The official theme of the conference will be "A Day of Empowerment, A Lifetime of change".As women, we often feel like we are alone in what we are going through and become frustrated in seeking solutions. The best people to provide the answers are often women who have been in their shoes! We need to realize that someone else has been there and be willing to reach out to one another for support. Women can often be each other's greatest enemy or our biggest support system. Our goal is to encourage the later. If we come together to empower each other we can create a lifetime of positive change. My Sister's Keeper is a unique support network for women that provides a forum to learn about all of the great products and services that your company provides. What are you Proud of ?

dartinbullseyeleft_2.jpg

By : Lisa Nicole BellLos Angeles,CA ( WomenPR.com) What are you proud of? Take a minute to think about that. What have you accomplished in your life that you are genuinely proud of? And how often do you think about the things that you’ve done that you’re proud of?A few days ago I was taking stock of the things I accomplished in 2008 and the things I’m working towards in 2009. I realized that in 2008, I set my goals and went about achieving them, but I realized that I didn’t spend enough time celebrating my accomplishments as they occurred. I reflected on several things I did and realized that I was exceptionally proud of a few accomplishments in particular.Celebrating our accomplishments is important to our personal development. Oftentimes we move from one task to another, checking things off of our to-do list without ever pausing to appreciate the fact that we’ve accomplished something worthwhile. Celebrating our accomplishments is essential to the development of our self-esteem. Think about how you would have viewed something as significant as your college or high school graduation if there were no ceremony or celebration and you simply moved on to next stage in your life with no fanfare. You may have felt that your hard work didn’t mean as much as it should have or that your completion of your education was not important to your life. However, the reality is that graduations are wonderful times that should be celebrated and honored. These kinds of occasions get attention, certificates, parties, and more. We reflect on graduations and other accomplishments of that sort with great pride in part because of the emphasis placed on them.Consider celebrating your other milestones the same way. If you get a promotion, celebrate! Promotions are rarely given in haphazard ways, yet some adults seem to disregard them. If you lose 10 pounds, celebrate! If you set a meaningful goal at the beginning of the year and you accomplish it, celebrate! Instead of quickly moving on to the next task, take a moment to bask in the glow of achievement and enjoy having reached your goal. Celebration not only evokes feelings of happiness and hope, they help us remember how capable and talented we are. When challenges arise, we can reflect on the skills we used to achieve other milestones and then solve problems with confidence.Today, I’d like you to make a list of 10 things you’re proud of. These could go back as far as elementary school or be as recent as this morning. Spend some time reflecting on each accomplishment, event, or thing and ponder what it means to your life. Allow yourself to be reminded that you are an accomplished and wonderful person who has many more great achievements ahead.Lisa Nicole Bell is an inspiration expert, author, and entrepreneur. Her book, Divine Inspirations, is currently available at www.adivinebook.com. She will conduct a FREE teleseminar on recession-proofing your mind on February 9.

eLearners.com Teams Up with Five Online Colleges and Universities to Send Moms and Dads Back to School Tuition FreeHoboken, NJ, (WomenPR.com) – eLearners.com, a leading website that connects students with online education, today announced its new campaign to help both working moms and dads return to school. “Project Working Mom…and Dads, Too!” is a full-ride online college scholarship campaign, which will award approximately 60 scholarships, totaling more than $2 million. Ashford University, Capella University, Everest University, Virginia College and Ashworth College are the five accredited online universities that are sponsoring the campaign. This campaign is a follow-up to the overwhelming demand from the initial two Project Working Mom campaigns in 2008. Those campaigns received more than 120,000 scholarship applications for more than $4 million in scholarships, and sent nearly 100 working moms back to school tuition free.“When we launched Project Working Mom around this time last year we had no idea what to expect. We knew we wanted to help moms go back to school to improve their lives and the lives of their family, but little did we know how much pent up demand and stories there were among moms who wanted to go back to school,” said Helen MacDermott, a representative from Project Working Mom. “During the first two campaigns, we would receive letters from working dads about tuition relief and this campaign helps to address the needs of all working parents.”“Project Working Mom…and Dads, Too!” is designed to help the approximately 84% of single working moms and dads who don’t have a bachelor’s degree by removing the barriers of time, money and confidence that many people face when deciding whether to go back to school. The flexible nature of online education allows working parents to find the time to complete their studies and through the comprehensive Project Working Mom website (http://www.projectworkingmom.com), working moms and dads can get the knowledge and support they need to feel confident about returning to school.“For the first time ever, American children are less likely than their parents to graduate high school,” said Carey Casey, CEO of the National Center for Fathering and fathers.com and author of the upcoming book, Championship Fathering. “This is a wake up call to parents that they must serve as role models and set the educational priority. Project Working Mom…and Dads, Too! removes the barriers and gives parents the opportunity to pursue the education they need to fulfill their dreams and the dreams they have set for their family.”The full-ride online college scholarships through “Project Working Mom…and Dads, Too!” are for online programs that range from certificates, associates and bachelors degrees to Masters and Ph.D. level programs. To apply for a scholarship, working moms and dads must complete a short application at http://www.projectworkingmom.com. They will also need to complete an essay that outlines their education and career goals and explain how an online program will enable them to achieve their goals. The deadline to apply for a scholarship is April 30, 2009."I worked with eLearners.com on the second Project Working Mom campaign and it was so inspiring to see women's dreams come true as they received the scholarship," said Stephanie Clark, the founder & CEO of My Daughter's Keeper, Inc., a non-profit organization empowering mothers, daughters, women and girls and a mother/daughter relationship coach. "Education is a powerful force and the best example for kids is for them to see their parents practicing what they preach and getting a college education for themselves."Editor’s Note: To interview one of the scholarship recipients from the 2008 Project Working Mom campaigns; a member of Project Working Mom; a member of National Center for Fathering; Stephanie Clark, the founder & CEO of My Daughter’s Keeper; or a member of the participating universities, contact Jenny Foust at 303.433.7020, jfoust@csg-pr.com.About eLearners.com®The eLearners.com website is one of several high visibility, high-quality prospecting tools offered by EducationDynamics, LLC. Saturday Morning Phone Call

( ring, ring ) Saturday morning Phone call, The dialog went something like this. " Hey girl, whats goin on ? " "Shirley, have you heard ?" "Heard what ?" "Denaro, is it true ?" "Beth, what true ?" "I got a call that Denaro was in a car accident and he is not expected to live" ( silence ) , "Beth, I just saw him on Wednesday, he came to the crib and, and......." ( I'm thinking how once again I brushed him off, I couldn't hear myself say it out loud ) "I'll call you back."As I am driving to the hospital I am pleading with God to give me one more chance. I arrive at the hospital and turn the corner, his stepfather runs to me and we embrace, I knew by his touch that something was not right. I go to Denaro's bedside and as I hold his hand I am talking to him silently, thoughtfully, lovingly. I kneal down to be as close to him as possible and as I look him over, I start from his feet and move my way up, when I get to his head, I see blood all over his face, tubes everywhere, then I saw it, I saw something which looked green coming out of his ear."Eddie, whats this green stuff ?" "Shirley its his brain, he's gone Shirley, he's gone." "What do you mean he's gone ? His brain ??" Eddie replies "his brain is swollen, he has a little to no brain function, but its slowly goin, we are just keeping him alive until his mother arrives to say her good-byes." I couldn't grasp little to none... "Eddie either its little or its none, what are you saying ??"At this time my phone rang, its my niece asking me to tell Denaro she loved him and always will. I said nothing more then Ok, and turned off my phone. This little boy who was like a brother to me is now on his death bed at 23 years old. He had so much to offer the world yet all I could think about was how I couldn't offer him my time when he needed it because of my selfishness.Sisters do not live life one more moment adding to your regrets. Do not wait for another Saturday morning phone call.
