Outdoor Wedding Trend: Self-Serve S’mores Station Posted: 14 Jun 2011 07:00 AM PDT
If you’re one of the many brides tying the knot outdoors this summer or fall, I have an exciting trend to share — the self-serve s’mores station! A couple months ago, I actually attended a wedding with this delicious after-dinner treat, so I was very excited when Amanda Hollowell of JL Events in Savannah, GA reached out to me to share her tips and tricks for setting up a self-serve s’mores station at your wedding or event. To start, you’ll of course need fire. Amanda explained that people tend do this one of two ways: with a campfire or as more of a personal flame station. The campfire station works well at outdoor facilities — if your venue doesn’t already have a fire pit, check to see if you can bring a portable fire pit. This station is a no stress setup. Amanda recommends a table wrapped in burlap or with burlap runners, ivory accents and floral that has greenery or small centerpieces placed in mason jars (mason jars + outdoor weddings = amazingness). You can use an existing table next to the campfire or a six foot banquet style table — all depending on the size of your guest count. Presentation is everything with this station. Amanda uses large glass vases with lids, in all different shapes and sizes (HomeGoods is a great place to find these). The glass enables guests to see the graham crackers, chocolate and marshmallows. Amanda recommends using lids because if the event is outside, there is chance you will be faced with some flying pests, so lids help protect those yummy treats. To help guests toast their marshmallows, you can use either extra long bamboo sticks (kabob skewers) or the long metal two prong stick (used mostly for barbequing). To entice the guests, JL Events puts a platter out with marshmallows already attached to bamboo sticks. One warning: if it’s a warm day and you are going to take the chocolate out of its wrappers and place it in jars, wait until the sun down goes down. Otherwise, the chocolate will melt. Amanda also recommends freezing the chocolate the night before and not putting it out until it is truly time for dessert. Now you’re ready to include a self-serve s’mores station at your next outdoor event! [Photos by Teresa Earnest of Memories n More] |

Lace wigs have been around for many years. Please note if you are currently suffering from any of these conditions Ego Extensions is here to help. You can feel beautiful again. Our realistic looking lace wigs will give you back the hair you once had or have always wanted. Our Private Boutique and caring staff will explain in full detail all of your options.

Lace Front Wigs
The Lace front wig cap construction consists of lace in the front and a wefted lace cap with adjustable straps in the back. Human Hair is attached to the Lace base. The hair can be washed, flat Ironed and styled as desired. Lace front wigs cannot be worn in high ponytail because of the wefted cap construction in the back. The lace in front goes to the middle portion of head and a realistic part can be made up to that area. Lace front wigs are less expensive because of their cap construction and are perfect for the client who is looking to have a wig which can be taken on and off on a daily bases with the optional choice of glue or tape.
Full Lace Wigs
Full Lace wig hair systems are the ultimate choice for your lace wig needs. A full lace cap has human hair hand tied into the base with stretch in the middle and baby hair around the perimeter. This wig can be parted throughout from front to back, the fine lace creates a look of "hair growing out of your scalp". The hair can be worn in high and low ponytails and can be flat ironed, washed and styled as desired. No one will ever know that the realistic looking full lace wig is not your own hair. This lace wig must be attached with Glue, Tape, Wig Combs Or Clips.
Glueless Lace Wigs
Glueless Full lace wig hair systems are constructed with a full lace cap with stretch in the middle and adjustable straps in the back. This unit also has baby hair around the perimeter and can be worn in a high ponytail. The wig can be parted from front to back and has the appearance of "hair growing out of the scalp". Facebook Birthdays
I recently had a birthday and this birthday I decided to look at my Facebook Birthday wishes in a different context. We can view this as a Facebook Birthday Case Study. According to Mr. Zuckerberg’s playground (Facebook) I have around 660 some odd friends on Facebook throughout the country. That is pretty impressive considering I only talk to 10 people daily, usually. That 10 almost stays in constant rotation due to my OCD personality to network and meet new people. That was a tangent, the focus of this “case study” is to track how many people would say Happy Birthday on my birthday, what this means to me as a person or a Facebook user and as a small business owner.

Whether you're starting a business on the side while still employed elsewhere, a student or homemaker looking for extra income, or unemployed and trying to figure out what to do, there are plenty of opportunities for you to start up a side business inexpensively. It's unlikely any of these will make you a living in the first few months, but they all have the potential to grow into full-time businesses. We'll take a look at 10 such opportunities and, most importantly, tell you what to do with the $20!
1. Webpreneur
It's what everyone who's ever surfed the Web dreams of-just stick a web site up there and watch the cash roll in! Well, that just doesn't happen overnight, but the fact of the matter is it's really not very hard to do. To do it right, start by picking a subject matter you know a lot about. Then get a domain and create a web site. It doesn't even matter what technology you use-just be totally anal-retentive about it looking good and provide plenty of original content. Now find some appropriate affiliate programs-that's where your revenues are going to come from. Next, learn everything you can about search engine marketing and promote the heck out of your site. Last of all, set aside time every week to put new content on the site, delete dead links, and other maintenance. Now do this three or four times, and you've chosen your topics well, you might actually have some decent income from it.
Spend the $20 on: $8 or less for a domain (see our Online Business Guide's list of cheap domain name registrars1) and $12 for a year of hosting (search for "$1 hosting"2).
2. Consultant
Getting into consulting is relatively simple. All you have to do is know how to do something better than most people do, and be able to either teach people how to do it or be willing to do it for them. Networking is the key to success in this business, so start by making a list of everyone you know and giving them all a call.
Spend the $20 on: $14 on a box of clean-edge laser or inkjet business cards and $6 buying your first prospect a cup of coffee one morning.
3. Housesitter / Petsitter
Particularly since 9/11, people feel an increased need for security, and housesitting gives them some reassurance while they're out of town. This one's great because it basically requires no particular skills, just trustworthiness and reliability. Be sure to have personal references available, and you'll also need reliable transportation. If you're an animal lover, petsitting is an easy add-on.
Spend the $20 on: $2 on flyers to put up on bulletin boards, and the rest on classified ads in your local neighborhood paper (not a big city-wide one).
4. Professional Organizer
People these days are simply overwhelmed by their "stuff". While there is an ever-growing trend of people wanting to simplify their lives, most of us haven't done it yet. It's not that people really have no clue how to get organized, it just keeps moving to the bottom of the stack, both figuratively and literally. There's a prime opportunity for people to come in at a reasonable rate and get houses organized. And while there is a National Association of Professional Organizers3 that you can join when you're ready, mostly it takes common sense, organizational skills, and a familiarity with what can be had at your local office supply and The Container Store4.
Spend the $20 on: Classified ads.
5. Avon Independent Sales Representative
Cosmetics is a virtually recession-proof business, because it's an inexpensive way for people to feel good about themselves. Avon is the largest consumer direct sales company in the world, with annual sales of nearly $6 billion. In business for well over 100 years, they have both a highly reputable product line and one of the few highly reputable multi-level marketing structures (in fact, they invented it). They also offer fashion and wellness products in addition to their beauty products. And while they bill themselves as "The Company for Women", a fairly substantial number of men have actually been very successful as Avon reps. The secret to making a living at it rather than just a little extra spending money? Build your downline-just like with any other network marketing or direct selling business.
Spend the $20 on: $10 signup fee, and $10 on brochures and a few samples.
6. Personal Services - Shopping & Errands
This is a great one going into the holiday season. Believe it or not, there are people who wouldn't be caught dead going anywhere near a mall, but they're not comfortable with buying certain items online, either. Again, trustworthiness and dependability are the key traits for this. If your car's not reliable, pick something else. Also, you won't need cash, but you'll need available credit on your credit cards, since you really can't use theirs. Consider an American Express or a Diner's Club that don't have preset spending limits. Or use a card that gives cash back reward or frequent flyer miles, and you'll make a nice little bonus for yourself.
Spend the $20 on: $1 on flyers and the rest on classified ads.
7. Desktop Publishing
It's amazing how many people have a computer and still don't know how to make a decent flyer! If you've got a good design sense, are extremely familiar with your word processor, and already have a laser or high-quality inkjet printer, you can get into desktop publishing. Create a really great-looking portfolio for yourself and go door-to-door.
Spend the $20 on: Some high-quality paper to create your samples on.
8. Tutoring
With the growing dissatisfaction with our education system and the huge growth in homeschooling, there's an unprecedented need for tutors these days for kids of all ages-even adults! If you've got a topic you can tutor in, contact the local schools, particularly private ones, and local homeschool groups, and offer your services. Don't be concerned if your topic is highly specialized-even those are in demand.
Spend the $20 on: $14 on a box of clean-edge laser or inkjet business cards and $6 on flyers.
9. eBay Seller
Yes, there really are people who make a decent living buying things at garage sales and flea markets and selling them on eBay. The big secrets? Stick to products you know (or learn before you start) extremely well, package your goods carefully, and provide impeccable customer service. It helps to have a digital camera or a scanner, but it's not required.
Spend the $20 on: Your first inventory at a garage sale.
10. Secretarial Service - Typing / Transcription / Proofreading
Many small businesses and individuals have a need for these services, but not enough need to hire a temp through an agency. Assuming you've got a computer, a printer, and e-mail (and the necessary skills), you're all set. Be prepared to charge by the job, not by the hour.
Spend the $20 on: $14 on a box of clean-edge laser or inkjet business cards and $6 on flyers.

A lot of direct mail pieces get thrown straight in the trash. Making yours stand out in the right way can help prevent that and improve your response rate. Here are ten proven ideas to boost your next direct mail campaign:
1. Simulate an old-style telegram. Direct mail veterans disdain this device, because it has been around so long. Yet the odd yellow envelope still gets opened first - along with envelopes that look impressively official, such as legal-sized manila.
2. Include a sample. Firms have sent actual roof tiles. Carpet tiles. Industrial absorbent cloths. Or you could give a coupon, good for a free 30-day trial. You'll find most customers will want to keep it. This is the "puppy dog" sales technique. Or give the first business service free. This is the "guilt" technique. Yes, some prospects will abuse it, but it may still prove very profitable - by driving in volumes of new customers.
3. Give a bulk imprinted envelope a first-class personal touch. Affix canceled postage stamps as well (buy in bulk from a stamp dealer). Foreign stamps add extra interest, if relevant to your offer.
In a now-legendary mailing, a department store featuring international goods stuck on stamps from many different countries and over-printed the envelope: "We've gone around the world for you ..."
4. Stamp "DO NOT OPEN" on the outer envelope. Inside is another envelope: "Do not open ... unless you want to save $5,000 on your office supplies in twelve months." Inside that is another envelope: "Do not open unless you have the authority to purchase office supplies worth 50,000 or more this year". Inside that is a still smaller envelope: "Do not open unless you have the vision to seize an opportunity you may never have again!" Expensive, but irresistible... and profitable, for some products.
5. Put a yellow sticker on the envelope: "Review sample. Submitted to ... Your help is needed and will be greatly appreciated. Kindly examine the contents of this mailing - then, if you wish, please send your criticisms or comments to: . . ." Not only will you get comments (some of them useful), but also you will get attention -and orders.
6. Mail a bulky or crinkly package, that obviously has a mysterious enclosure. Like a Christmas stocking, it begs to be opened. In tests, bulky enclosures like pen-and-pad mailings drew double the response of flat enclosures of equal perceived value, like stress indicators.
7. Overwhelm them ... if your potential payoff is very high. A bank delivered just 1,000 mailshots in three teaser stages. Each stage cost $20-$50. First was a real house brick (a small one): "We're as solid as this brick". Next stage was a real diamond (industrial quality): "We're as bright as this diamond". Last stage was a real plug-in desk telephone: "We're as close as this telephone. Plug it in. Call us now."
It worked, for the big-ticket investment schemes they were selling. So they say.
Another firm selling design engineering techniques to automotive manufacturers mailed just fifty boxes. Each contained a 28-page brochure and a five-minute cassette - plus a portable stereo cassette player to play it on. The cassette had a recorded personal message from the firm's chief designer. Each shot cost around $50. They only needed one sale, to pay for the promotion. It worked. They say.
8. Try a fax blast. It costs very little to fax an letter anywhere across the country. Service providers exist that can multiple-fax thousands of your messages automatically. And faxes are "urgent". They get read. Use a reputable fax broadcasting provider, though. Sending unsolicited advertising via fax is illegal in the U.S. and many other countries. A reputable service will have their own opt-in lists of people willing to receive fax broadcasts.
9. Write the ultimate direct mail letter, one on one. Study a handful of prospect companies very closely. Discover their turnover, number of staff, latest product launches or business projects, trends in their market (complete with accurate numbers on market size, growth, etc.) - the same painstaking homework you'd want to do when first meeting a major potential customer face to face.
Find out by a telephone call the name and job title of the person you need to write to and, if possible something about him or her (the firm last worked for, the job last promoted from). Weave all that highly specific information into your letter:
With your sales approaching $12.23 million in fiscal 2009, your company could add $125,000 to its profits this year if you simply shaved 1 per cent off the distribution costs. If you could add just another 1 per cent to your 16 per cent penetration of the $77 million UK market, your present sales would increase to $13 million ... that's a very creditable $104,000 in sales for each of the 125 staff you employ, and well above your industry average.
We have prepared a free report exclusively for you, Mr. Jones, explaining how Smith & Co. can achieve these objectives in fifteen weeks. I will call your office in the next three days, to discuss when I can deliver this report to you.
Such letters are hard work to research and write .. and follow up. (Don't expect the prospect to call you back. You want him to wait expectantly for your call, with a reluctant smile of admiration for your boldness and hard work.) But all you need do is write a handful each month, and gain a good conversion-to-sale ratio on a big ticket product.
One thing I promise you - most of those you write to will see you. They're dying to know what else you've found out about them!
10. Have you the nerve for this one? If all else has failed (and only then), write a letter like the one above to the big potential customer you've been courting. Fill it with nice things, compliment the company on its achievements, but gently point out how much better it could do if only it let you put your ideas into practice. Title the letter 'An Open Letter to xxx Corporation.'
Get your lawyer to vet it. Why? Because your next step is to buy a page in the prospect's biggest trade paper - and you publish this letter as an advertisement. At worst, you'll receive a cold letter from the company concerned (so what? - you weren't going to get their business anyway.) Plus, expect to pick up some editorial comment - and a lot of admiring trade gossip. Better still, expect a few telephone calls from other big fish who admire your chutzpah and invite you to meet them. At best, you might even get the business you went after in the first place.

Business owners know all too well that finding the best qualified leads takes time… lots of time! So, what if there was a way to skip the time it takes to develop ‘cold leads?’ Now, close your eyes and imagine building a referral network. Even more, it won’t cost you a dime! Does that sound too good to be true?
It can be done by adapting referral networking. A referral network is a group of people who already know and trust you, understand your business concept and willing to refer people interested in buying your product or service. This is an extremely effective way to create a steady stream of very warm leads. Here are 4 tips to create a powerful referral marketing strategy. Read more...
Women About Biz had a great teleclass session on "Running Your Business Solo"! Below are just a few notes from the teleclass that can help the businesswoman who is playing multiple roles in her business:
Things to remember when Running Your Business Solo:
- You'll have to sacrifice many things that you feel are priority in order to make room for the many tasks of your business.
- Structure and focus are key in managing your business daily. Without a plan or system to properly map out how your business will flow, you'll always find yourself trying to catch up.
- It's important to set your business goals and develop your strategy on an annual basis. This way you can break down the action tasks needed to implement your strategy quarterly.
- While there are many systems and techniques in planning out your business day, a good time management planner is all you really need.
- Make sure you posts your tasks/to-do items in a time slot and always schedule "travel time" and "prep time" before and/or after your appointments. In addition, set aside at least 2 hours daily for making your prospect or power calls.
- Remember, a successful business brings in new business frequently and that is done by making new connections and building a list of customers and prospects that you'll stay in contact with at least every 14 to 21 days.
- Reward yourself at least weekly with whatever it is that you want to do. A massage or special lunch treat etc.
- Remember that running your business solo doesn't mean that you're alone! Learn to leverage the power and talent of others on your business journey.
- Use the assistance of a Virtual Assistant whenever possible. This will allow you to focus on other areas that need your attention.
