No more tears......just cancer causing chemicalsBy Jovana RuzicicMay 28, 2009Baby products should not contain toxic ingredients, according to common sense as well as 40 + organizations lead by the Environmental Working Group (EWG) co-founded Campaign for Safe Cosmetics.Just last week, the Campaign sent a letter to Johnson and Johnson asking that its products made for children don't contain hidden carcinogenic contaminants 1,4-dioxane and formaldehyde. No More Toxic TubThe action comes after a recent Campaign-sponsored No More Toxic Tub report that found those two contaminants in over 60 percent of the 48 products tested. Both 1,4-dioxane and formaldehyde are known carcinogens and formaldehyde can also trigger skin rashes. Like other toxic ingredients often found in your shampoo, lotion and deodorant, they are not limited in personal care products. In addition, since they are contaminants and not ingredients, they are not disclosed on product labels. Not breaking the law isn't good enough when the law is weakThe line of defense for the manufacturers has been the typical "we didn't break the law" as well as the usual "small doses are insignificant." It is true that companies did not break the law. But it's also true that the law - the Toxic Substances Control Act (TSCA) - is so weak that under it, the federal government wasn't able to ban asbestos! A chemical responsible for at least 10,000 deaths a year in the U.S.Low doses matterThe small doses are not insignificant because we are all exposed to chemicals in personal care products every day, several times a day. Those exposures are there in addition to exposures to other toxics in food we eat, water we drink, air we breathe and so forth. All of these exposures add up, and could lead to diseases later in life. The companies don't have to use the toxic ingredients, as alternatives are available. Even Johnson and Johnson can make formaldehyde-free products, as they do in Japan.Tell Johnson & Johnson to get rid of the toxic chemicalsWithout a tough federal law that would require the chemicals in personal care products be safe, consumers are left out on their own to make the best purchasing decisions. That's why we created Skin Deep, a cosmetics database that can help you make informed decisions when it comes to toxic contained in personal care products you use.Until the law is changed, you can join us and tell Johnson and Johnson that you don't want these toxic chemicals in your baby's shampoo and they should take it out!Posted at 12:01 PMFiled under campaign for safe cosmetics, cosmetics, cosmetics database, johnson & johnson, toxic tubhttp://www.enviroblog.org/cgi-bin/mt/mt-tb.cgi/10712 CommentsRosetta | June 4, 2009 6:05 PM | ReplyI have always wondered about the safety of the "tears free" formula of shampoos. It is so attractive, as we all want what makes our precious little ones as comfortable as possible; but not at the expense of their future health. I hope shedding light on this hidden hazard compels big companies to invest in an alternative. Otherwise, I declare that I will support any other enviro-minded or health-conscious company that IS willing to develop a toxin-free, "tears-free" formula. All mothers should be up in arms over this deception!Roxanne Black | June 7, 2009 11:57 AM | ReplyIt's so disturbing to me that companies knowingly put bad things in our food and care products. I have a child with Autism, I'm not sure what causes Autism, what I do know is that once I find out there are bad ingredients in something, I stop using the product and I pass it onto everyone I know. Eventually the companies like J&J will have no choice but to change. I just sold my stock in J&J that I held in my RRSP account. Enough I say!!!!!!!!!!After you've read this, GET THIS http://www.sherellee.com/plain.html

Tax Breaks for Your Children This Summer

When school is out, what do your children do? Parents may send children to summer camp or special school programs or make other child arrangements. Some older children may go to work. There may be tax breaks for these activities.DEPENDENT CARE CREDITIf your child is under age 13 (or a child of any age who is physically or mentally incapable of caring for himself or herself) and you work full time or part time, you may be eligible for a tax credit. The credit, which is based on eligible expenses up to $3,000 for one dependent and $6,000 for two or more dependents, ranges from 20% to 35%, depending on your adjusted gross income (AGI). For those with AGI over $43,000, the credit rate is 20%. Thus, the top credit for those at the 20% rate is $1,010 for one dependent and $2,100 for two or more dependents.A variety of expenses incurred both in and out of the home can qualify for the credit.- Compensation to a babysitter, housekeeper, or au pair to watch your child. Also include employment taxes you may pay for a housekeeper.- Daycare costs.- Costs for day camp, including a speciality camp such as a soccer or computer campINELIGIBLE EXPENSES: The cost of sleepaway camp is not an eligible expense for purposes of the dependent care credit. Also, transportation costs to day care or paying for the transportation costs of someone working in your home does not qualify for the credit.SPECIAL NEEDS CHILDRENThe cost of education for special needs children, which may continue throughout the summer months, can qualify as a deductible medical expenses are deductible only as itemized deductions to the extent they exceed 7.5% of AGI). The schooling must be on a doctor's recommendation, so a physically or mentally disabled dependent can attend a program to alleviate or overcome the disability.Note: Outside-the-home care costs for a special needs dependent may qualify for the dependent care credit. However, the same expenses can only be taken into account once (either for a medical deductions or dependent care credit).PUTTING YOUR CHILD TO WORKIf you own a business, you may be able to employ your child this summer. Given the tight job market, this may be the only way your child can earn money and gain work experience now.Wages paid to your child are deductible by the business. Wages up to $5,700 in 2009 are not taxable to your child. If, for example, you paid your child $16 an hour for a 35-hour work week, he or she would reach the tax-free limit in about 10 weeks. What's more, he or she can use these earnings to get a jump on retirement savings. Up to $5,000 can be used to fund an IRA. It's probably wise for a child to opt for a Roth IRA; they usually won't need the tax deduction for a traditional IRA, and earnings in the Roth IRA build up tax free.If you're self-employed and your child is under 18, there are no FICA (Social Security and Medicare) taxes or FUTA (federal unemployment) taxes. There may, however, be taxes and other insurance obligations at the state level.Caution: Make sure you pay your child only reasonable compensation for work actually performed. Since the IRS pays extra attention to family-related write-offs, keep time slips and other records of your child's work.

So You're Considering a Virtual Assistant?

So you've decided that you need a virtual assistant. Great! A virtual assistant (also known as remote assistant) can offer services that you can utilize in your own business or even personal life to help you save time and money. I have come in contact with many people that know they need help but when I speak with them find out they really don't have a plan of action lined up. In order to find the right service provider and get the most from their services here are some things to consider before deciding if a virtual assistant is right for you:Know Your Project NeedsYou'd be surprised how many business owners or employers have little idea how much time and attention is required for the job they need completed. Now you may not have all of the details exactly. Write down an outline for your project, take a step back and look through objective eyes at your project needs. Then evaluate what is necessary to get the job done. Do you have at least an idea of how your project should be executed? If you need help with the finer details consult with the virtual assistant you are looking to hire to see how they would execute the work. Then go back and fine tune your project description. It's essential to be up front with yourself and your business and say 'I need someone to help me figure this out.' This pre-planning will help you save time and money down the road and facilitate healthy and productive communication with your perspective VA.Determine What Experience You Need Your VA to HaveAfter you have determined what project(s) or assistance you need ask yourself what experience must your VA have. It may be very basic experience like typing and data entry to more specialized experience like project management, accounting, or marketing. Don't make the mistake and tell yourself 'Anyone should be able to do what I need done,' because that seldom is the case. Not all virtual assistants are cut out to perform the same work and each VA will have a different background. Take the time to write down qualifications that the VA should have or at least should be able to develop over time while working on your project. Also remember the years of experience your VA has in certain areas always adds value.Don't Always Try to Go CheapWe've all heard the saying 'You get what you pay for.' Money is used in exchange for a product or service and also as a motivator. We all want to be paid for our services or what our products are worth. So if you don't know how much you should fairly pay someone consider looking at wage and salary charts online. Chances are if you hire someone with the intention to pay them under wage you may not get the desired results you are looking for and in the long run this will cost you and your business more time and money. Don't expect stellar or professional results if you are only willing to hire someone for minimum wage or less. Create your budget and decide how serious you are about your business. Your level of seriousness about your business will determine how far you are willing to go to hire the proper, professional help you need and at the appropriate cost.Determine the Level of Communication You Need With Your VAWe would all agree communication is extremely important in any business. How many of us really follow this advice? It is important that when you commission a VA to work with you to decide how much communication you need with them and to find out what degree of communication your VA is comfortable with. As the employer you are coming to the VA for services so make efforts to not only check-in and see if your work is getting done but to also ask your VA if there are things he or she may need from you, then provide what it is they need. Work to establish regular meetings via phone or remote meeting to speak with your VA, provide your schedule so your VA knows where you will be and respond to emails from your VA. Remember one of the reasons you have a virtual assistant is to have someone that works remotely. If you are not comfortable with email to help facilitate communication chances are you are not ready to have a VA. Also remember your VA has a life too. Some people make the mistake of calling their VA too much during working hours, after business hours or on the weekends. Respect their time like you would anyone else and establish your level of communication.Do you want to use this article on your website or blog? Gather Information

I have been on this “feeding frenzy” of information from successful business owners and entrepreneurs to enhance my own business. Implementing what I’m learning and moving forward in my goals is exciting! Sometimes it feels like I’m on information overload and then I remember what a Minister once said to me; “chew the meat and spit out the bones!” I take in a lot of information (meat) discerning what is suitable and viable versus what is trash (bones) is a must. Get the information, more importantly understand the information and implement what is suitable for you. Whether you’re starting a new endeavor or working to grow what you are currently involved in, gather information… and remember to spit out the bones.

6 Steps to More Engaged Subscribers

6 Steps to More Engaged SubscribersTakeaway notes from a DMNews webinar. By Aliza Bornstein, copywriter, Melissa DataIn “The New Email Imperative: Subscriber Engagement” webinar on May 20, Loren McDonald of Silverpop insists email marketing in not dead. However, bad marketing is on life support. In this sense, subscriber engagement becomes imperative.Step 1: Give subscribers a stake in the relationship. If there’s no data, there’s no relevance.Target communications based on age• Under age 26 targeted- age centric subject line- sent to recipients under 26 years- open rates around double average open rate• Mailing for the over 50 crown- targeted discount offer- open rates 75% above average open ratePreference center touch points• At opt-in• Welcome email• Normal email stream• Transactional emails• Web site/transactional process• At opt-outStep 2: Welcome emails—Start the relationship right away.Research by marketing publisher Marketing Sherpa shows mail subscriber interest begins to disintegrate as early as two weeks after the opt-in, as measured by the open rate. Within two months, the open rate typically falls 20% to 25%.Welcome Emails: Goals and purpose• Goals- speed up conversion- minimize list churn- strengthen brand perception- reduce inactivity• Purpose- educate subscriber- reward/incent- instill/reinforce trust- enable immediate “email experience”- provide administrative informationStep 3: Make it human—use personality. Customers want a personal note, not a direct marketing promotion. More than ever, customers want to connect with brands via real people (think Twitter).Step 4: Get them involved. Ratings, popularity, top sellers, most read articles, top 10 albums, top springtime recipes, etc. Social email is the new rival.• Are your messages share-worthy?- are you a trusted source?- tribal interests—what motivates your interest groups?- simplicity of message- ease of sharing- obvious value- timely and relevant contentStep 5: Use the data and create value through additional email streams. Use relevancy based on purchase data.• Cart AbandonmentDiapers.com implemented a cart abandonment reminder campaign. Compared to previous email campaigns they tried, they saw big results after only one month.- 48% lift click through rate- 129% lift in net conversion rate• Break through the clutter with new message streams- triggers- notifications- alerts- reminders- aggregators- updates- closeouts- …and moreStep 6: Don’t let them disengage or walk away.List Churn and Inactives—The Good and Bad News• The Bad News- A typical list will lose 1/3 of its members each year. (Bounces, spam complaints, and unsubscribers account for 2-4% per month).- 25% to 80% of your list is inactive. (Subscriber has not opened or clicked in specific time frame of 6 to 12 months).• The Good News- Churn can be reduced- You control most of your destiny- Some inactives can be reengagedIt’s hard to get people back once they’ve unsubscribed, so ask for feedback on how you’re doing or create a ratings system within a survey. Also, promote alternatives to unsubscribing. Offer email preferences on your unsubscribe page.---Source: DMNews May 20, 2009 webinar (www.dmnews.com). Are you listening to your customers?

Some may chuckle at the notion of listening being a skill because you are not “doing” anything. After all, you are just waiting for the other person to stop speaking so you can share your information? However, it is this mindset that has gotten companies into trouble. Many companies have gotten into the habit of planning their responses while their customers are still talking. It is amazing to me how many situations could be avoided or at least solved in a timely manner if companies took the time to listen to their customers. If companies are truly listening to their customers they would do the following:Acknowledge their presence. I know this seems like an obvious point, but if companies are truly seeking to learn about their customers then they should be willing to answer their questions. How many times have you called customer service because you were experiencing an issue with a product/service and while the customer service representative is working on “resolving” the issue you had to endure sitting through a speech about their new product/service? If this is your organization’s idea of a good time to “pitch” a new service you are sorely mistaken. Timing is everything and being forced to learn about a new service when a customer is currently experiencing problems with the old one will only frustrate them.Summarize. You should be able to repeat your customer’s needs if you were listening (it goes without saying that a customer’s duty is to clearly convey the problem). After all, you will not be able to resolve the issue if you are unable to identify problem. Repeating what the customer has just said indicates that you are concerned and allows the customer the opportunity to correct you in the event that you misunderstood them.In the event that you do not understand the issue your customer is experiencing, it is okay to ask for clarification after they have completely explained their situation (many times your question will be answered if you let the customer finish speaking). The majority of your customers will not give you a hard time about asking them questions–especially if it will help speed up the process in getting their issue resolved.Seek feedback. Companies can further demonstrate their ability to listen to their customers by actively seeking their customers input about their product/service by conducting market research (i.e. surveys, focus groups, etc.). The only way to confirm that you are on the same page as your customers is to actively pursue their opinions. You might be surprised at how accommodating your customers would be in assisting your organizations’ s efforts to improve your service. Companies should be more than willing to adequately reward their customers (i.e. chance to win a prize, discounts, etc.) in order to further increase the chances of receiving their customers cooperation.Just imagine what might happen when companies start listening and customers start talking–a conversation!
