"Kinship is a relationship between any entities that share a genealogical origin, through either biological, cultural, or historical descent. In anthropology the kinship system includes people related both by descent and marriage".Kinship is when you want your family around and it feels Great! There is love and consideration and respect for each other. Everyone accepts each other for who they are the life they are living.We have become older and wiser and life has mellowed us whether we have a big bank or even if we are struggling, we appreciate our family ties. Kinship is important as a way to measure the quality of our living.Look at the aging adults in your life, are they healthy? Do they live a decent life? Have they done well for themselves? Do they have an adequate income and health care? Are they steady and independent or are they frail and weak?Kinship is caring enough to be available to your relatives when they need you without jeopardizing the well-being and balance in your own family. Maintaining balance is important so family members don't take advantage of you and cause problems.There is a difference in having problems and having issues!"Drama is play a dramatic display intended for performance by actors on a stage, an episode that is turbulent or highly emotional."Drama is when the same people complain about the same things they always complain about. The object of complaint is different but the dynamics are the same. The complaint is usually about not getting something that they really don't want, they just don't want the other person to get it or get credit for it. Yeah, its just that vague.Issues are the assumptions people make when they are operating out of jealousy and envy instead of love and respect. Begrudging someone else's happiness is a personal issue grounded in smallness of character. It comes from an underdeveloped set of principles or a lack of order and control in your personal life.Just because someone has it together and you don't is not reason to kick dirt on them. And when someone does not have it together is no reason to kick dirt on them either.As siblings, the jealousy of "mom always liked you best or dad was harder on" me will always come into play because the memories are selective different. What we experience growing up in the same household is an altered memory when come together as adults.The "remember when" stories turn into a disagreement because everyone remembers it differently. As adults we sometimes refuse to acknowledge to tell the truth about our parents and the way we lived. If you family was slightly dysfunctional, we tend to sugar-coat the truth and alter the memory to make it more nostalgic and sentimental.You can't choose your family, but you can learn to live with them!Yes we have heard it all before and will hear it again and again because we are entering a time when family is important in every way. The demonstration of family and kinship is being demonstrated by our new First Family. The devotion and attention to each other is genuine. The love is real and not just acted out for the cameras.My request is that we all examine the "content of our character" and be better in our family relationships. Life is too short to hold people hostage to your assumptions and emotional roadblocks.Let's all make an effort to have more tolerance for each other and exercise compassion, patience and the willingness to set our issues aside.When you point your finger at anyone remember there are three fingers pointing back at you! "The Secret" vs. "The Check-In" the REAL Missing Ingredient of Your Business

I am writing this post over sheer concern about an alarming trend I am seeing in business start-ups today.It all starts with "The Secret," that little book that brought the Law of Attraction to the forefront (although there were many of us who were familiar with this concept going back to the 60s and even before that). Very simply, The Law of Attraction states that what you think about, you bring about or we attract into our lives that to which we give our energy, focus and attention.The result has been an explosive industry with books, tapes, courses, seminars, et al all based upon "if you wish it hard enough it can be so" and "I think I can, I think I can, I think I can." And certainly there is nothing wrong with maintaining those positive attitudes as negative thinking gets us nowhere.But there is a flip side to this. I have a friend who owns a business that is in trouble for a variety of reasons. Having been involved in several business startups that I have seen tank like a sinking ship (and having to make adjustments in my own business methodology) I am all too familiar with scenarios where a business pin prick turns into a cut and then a cut into a full-fledge hemorrhage.For sure we need to encourage each other. But when something is blatantly hemorrhaging, you almost have to hold a mirror up and say you see, your business needs triage. In fact, maybe you just need to admit it into the ICU until it can get well again. To keep encouraging someone to stay in a particular business when maybe they just need to admit that it is time to move on isn't really fair or honest with your friend or acquaintance.It doesn't matter how great your business idea is, but it requires time, money and marketing to make it work. Yeah, you can get into some network marketing companies on a shoestring, but I have seen it time and time again where a brick and mortar business owner is complaining about lack of customers and they are putting zero dollars into marketing, zero time time into networking and they expect their business to flourish. Of course, some entrepreneurs for whatever reason may hit the sweet spot right off the bat and their business takes off like gangbusters, but that isn't the norm. Most people are trying to figure out how to bring in more customers (and quickly,too) and therefore the proliferation of social network sites. Make friends and get customers.The other side of"The Secret" and all the positive thinking is what I call "The Check-in." For example, have you identified and written down all the reasons why you want to have a successful business so that you can build upon and rely upon your commitment to that decision -- especially during challenging times? Do you have a well-formulated strategic plan with objectives, goals and related actions? Do you have adequate financial reserves in place, available to invest in the growth of your company? Are you REALLY following your heart or are you too proud to admit that the business just isn't working and you would rather do something else? These are just some of the questions that any business owner should always be asking himself or herself.Know that when some of the components of your business building system are missing or not working at peak capacity you will not achieve the optimal results from your business building activities. This can manifest itself in several ways depending upon what needs fine-tuning:*Lack of focus, motivation, or confidence*A low converstion rate*Fewer new opportunities and clientsNo amount of positive thinking or over-encouraging from well-meaning friends and family will fill in your business building gaps. I have decided to write this article in light of the recent closure and/or collapse, of Indy Mac and Bear Stearns. Those of you that have been directly affected in some way due to one or both of these unfortunate events, you are in our prayers. Could you imagine working hard each day and putting your earnings into a bank that you trust only to find out one day that bank is gone and any excess of funds over $100,000 are gone as well. Now imagine owning stock in one of the biggest firms on wall street or even working and making great money with that firm, only to wake up one day to find out that your job is gone or again most of your money is gone. It doesn't stop there. Some of the mortgage companies are in trouble as well.How quickly we have forgotten the lessons learned from Enron. The leaders may lose vast fortunes, but most still have to find a way to get by on "a few million dollars". For the average worker, every penny from a lifetime of work is sometimes wiped out entirely. Retirement plans and even everyday living plans, are gone in the blink of an eye.When I was in California, I always wondered why so many of my Asian friends and their families did not use banks. When I moved to NY I learned about the Jewish community and their belief system. Not only did they not keep all of their money in banks, but they invested their funds in a lot of gold, silver, other precious metals, fine art and paintings. In addition to that they purchased their homes in a lot of cases outright. To a great extent, a growing sector have decided to insulate themselves as much as possible from the wildly swinging pendulum of the economy. When your home is paid off, you can ride the winds of change a lot easier, because there is no mortgage to concern yourself with.If our eyes are not open already it is time to open them very wide, and see that the economy is very unpredictable at best. Now I did not say that to scare anyone. Instead, now is the time to pay attention to and manage your own money. And no I am not saying that as an expert, I have had to again change my way of thinking from my thoughts as a teenager into my early twenties. At that time I used banks mainly because I did not feel comfortable in having to keep track of my money. Now it is a way of life for me. And remember that the dollar depreciates so even when we do have large amounts of money it is only short term, in that the funds are used to pay for appreciating assets that we use in our daily lives; Antique Sterling Flatware, Fine Art, Classical Furniture, Rugs, Bone China, etc. Why put your $1000 in someone else's hands to earn maybe 3% interest when you can take the same $1000 and pay for a sterling or coin silver tea set worth $1500 or a Period Federal table worth $2,000.The challenge for the week is to use money from a bank, a stock, a piggy bank, etc, and invest it into an appreciating asset. Also, if you have access to your money or other assets, set it up where you don't have all your money or assets tied up in one place. While precious metals, antiques, fine art, real estate, stocks, etc are great ways for your money to appreciate, we still recommend that you do not put all of your money in one vehicle. If you are worried about the having quick access to your money, investing in precious metals would be the best route to take. Sterling silver would be the cheapest.
