The devil wants to pile up the rubbish and ruins from our past to blockour progress.Nehemiah and his fellow Jews who went back to Jerusalem to rebuild the city'swalls encountered mounds of rubble and other debris from the city's destruction.The fourth chapter of Nehemiah describes the physical rubbish the workers faced,but the principle remains the same in the spiritual world.The debris they were working around was a reminder of past failures and defeatsfor Jerusalem. But Nehemiah was there to claim victory, not moan over the past.And many times we must do as Nehemiah did--stand in the area of previous defeatand claim victory for Christ!If you get caught up in all of the junk of the past, you'll get weighed down andnot move forward. Don't let the evil one remind you of your failures... and failto focus on the blessings of God in your life.Have you lost confidence today because of failures that still haunt you? If so,I encourage you to follow Paul's advice and forget about them... and strainforward to what lies ahead!Don't let the piles of rubble from your past keep you from pressing on forChrist!

THE BATTLE OF THE MIND...

The Battle of the MindEveryone has to fight the battle that goes on in the mind. Our thought lifedetermines where we are in the things of God. When people meditate on what iswrong or the negative side of a situation, they become blinded by the problemand never see the escape available to them. Our Heavenly Father has given us away to bring forth light, and that is through diligent study and meditation ofthe Word of God. In Hosea 4:6 God tells us, "My people are destroyed for lack ofknowledge."As Christians we are going to have to learn how to apply Bible knowledge to ourlives, if we want to win the battles of life. God instructs the Believer on howto control their thought life by utilizing His whole armor. Ephesians 6:10-17says, "Finally, my brethren, be strong in the Lord and in the power of Hismight. Put on the whole armor of God, that you may be able to stand against thewiles of the devil. For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but againstprincipalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this age,against spiritual hosts of wickedness in the heavenly places. Therefore take upthe whole armor of God, that you may be able to withstand in the evil day, andhaving done all, to stand. Stand therefore, having girded your waist with truth,having put on the breastplate of righteousness, and having shod your feet withthe preparation of the gospel of peace; above all, taking the shield of faithwith which you will be able to quench all the fiery darts of the wicked one. Andtake the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word ofGod;"The Apostle Paul uses armor, the battle dress of the first-century Romansoldier, as a metaphor for God's spiritual armor. Clearly, the military metaphoris intended to show that we are engaged in an active battle. Therefore,Believers must recognize that they are in warfare everyday, and that thebattlefield is our minds. The whole armor of God has been provided to help usguard against the enemy of our mind--Satan. Satan's only weapon against us isthrough the mind. If he can put thoughts, ideas and suggestions in our minds,then he can control our actions. We must come to understand that ignorance ofthe Word and victory over life's battles are impossible roommates.If we desire the overcoming life of Jesus then we will need to "take up thewhole armor of God." We are not to focus in on only part of the armor to theneglect of the other combat coverings, if we do so we will find ourselvesdefeated. It is the whole armor-knowledge of the Word of God-that gives us thevictory. We need to take each piece of the armor as illustrated by Paul andapply them to our life so that we can benefit from its protection.Family, it is critical that we acknowledge that the warfare is not againstphysical forces but against powers that have authority in the spirit realm. Paulnot only warns the Believer of a clearly defined demonic structure, but alsoinstructs us to take up the whole armor of God in order to maintain a battlestance against these unseen forces.Satan's mode of operation has not changed. He continues to use the same mindgame that he used on Eve in the Garden of Eden (Genesis 3:1). We are going tohave to recognize his deceptive ways and stand against them with the Word ofGod.Our battle is clearly spiritual. Satan launches assaults on the mind in order toaffect the spiritual aspect of our lives. The mind is like the door throughwhich the enemy has access. If Satan can influence our thoughts, he can controlevery aspect of our lives. Therefore, we must examine every thought that comesto our minds. Are they the fiery darts, the evil day and or the wiles of thedevil? Every thought has either a life or death component attached to it. Once athought is allowed to have access in our lives, it begins its subtle work.This is the reason God tells us in Romans 12:1-2: "I beseech you therefore,brethren, by the mercies of God, that you present your bodies a livingsacrifice, holy, acceptable to God, which is your reasonable service. And do notbe conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind,that you may prove what is that good and acceptable and perfect will of God."

Out with the Old, In with the NewLuke 5:36-39 says, "And He was also telling them a parable: 'No one tears apiece of cloth from a new garment and puts it on an old garment; otherwise hewill both tear the new, and the piece from the new will not match the old. Andno one puts new wine into old wineskins; otherwise the new wine will burst theskins and it will be spilled out, and the skins will be ruined. But new winemust be put into fresh wineskins. And no one, after drinking old wine wishes fornew; for he says, "The old is good enough."'"Jesus' ministry came at a time when Judaism had been severely perverted into anoutrageous system of rule keeping with self-righteous teachers presiding asrulers over the people of Israel. Rather than look at how the Old Testamentforetold of Christ's coming and sacrifice, they ignored what had come in theperson of Christ in exchange for what had been. The Pharisees and many of theJews had become enslaved to a thinking process that loved the old ways. Now,there is nothing wrong with being nostalgic or reflecting upon the past, but itbecomes wrong when it controls us to the extent that we are unable to put it outof our minds. The Jews were so consumed with Moses and the Law that they couldnot recognize God Himself in their midst. Though they wanted a Messiah, theywanted it their way. They wanted a Messiah Who would bring back the glory daysof an earthly kingdom as it had been under David and Solomon. They wanted thepast, and because they thought that the old was good enough, they missed thefuture which was right before their very eyes. They were satisfied with the oldwine, and their clouded view of the past led them to miss the new wine in Jesuswhich was far better.In order for them to receive the new wine, they needed to realize that theywould have to lay aside their system of self-righteous Law-keeping. Jesuspreached a message of forgiveness, healing, grace, and life. He didn't come toset up an earthly empire, but He came to demonstrate His eternal power andovercome the world. He didn't come to show that Law-keeping was the way toeternal life, but He Himself fulfilled the Law because no man could do it(Romans 3:23, 8:4). The Law brought condemnation and showed man his inability tokeep it (Galatians 3:24). Jesus came to bring life, and life to the full (John10:10).Old wineskins were fitting for the old wine. The Law did its job, and it did itwell (Romans 7:12). But its job was to point people to the cross and to Christ,Who had come in the flesh. If new wine was available in Jesus, then it made nosense to put it into old wineskins which would break as soon as the wine waspoured in. The Law had done its job, and the new wine needed new wineskins. Thenew wine of forgiveness in Christ needs to go in the new wineskin of grace. Wewere under law, but now we are under grace (Romans 6:14). The old covenant isover, and the new covenant has been established. Christ is the centerpiece andthe focus. We must drink of Him (John 7:37).If we find ourselves still trying to earn our way into God's favor, we need tolay aside the old and receive the grace and forgiveness of Christ. If we areattempting to manipulate God into giving us what we want in life, we need tostop drinking of the old wine and simply receive the blessings which Hegraciously gives as He knows best.Trying to do things on our own strength apart from Christ is like pouring wineinto a leaky wineskin. It will never work. Do we want to be full in Christ? Dowe want to experience the promised abundant life? Life to the full is found inabandoning the old wine, taking hold of the new wineskin by faith in Christ, andallowing Him to fill us and empower us as He pours the new wine of His graceinto our hearts.

A WITNESS TO THE COURAGE!

By Edward Foxworth IIINot in my lifetime! Has been the cry of many of our parents and grandparents. They were the generation of people who dealt with the lynching of Emmett Till, the murder of four girls at a church and the denial of basic liberties like voting rights, equal education and political representation. It was their life experiences of being led, through some very trying times, by the Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. that we now research. Enduring personal abuse, his home being bombed and often being arrested he courageously fought for what he believed was right and necessary. Change was the result. From segregated schools, buses and water fountains to his opposition against the Vietnam War, countless sit-ins and marches, Dr. King was correct in proclaiming that “Injustice anywhere, is a threat to justice everywhere.”Today we sit at a new starting line for the continuation of that very same courageous spirit. A spirit that lives on in a former community activist turned Senator, President Barack Obama. Someone who also understands the strife and struggles that African-American citizens, have had to endure. Yes, he will be challenged nationally and internationally, to provide leadership and direction to millions of people who also want change. But isn’t that what passing the virtual baton is all about? Receiving the knowledge and experiences of those that have ran their leg of the race and are now passing it on to those who are worthy? I’m convinced that he’s more than prepared for the job. To see this thoughtful, calculated, smart and compassionate human being, who happens to be African-American and who just happens to be a man, for this journalist, the eldest son of a former black panther, is extremely emotional.The price for getting to where President Obama is today – Extreme Racism, Sexism and in many cases Death, much of what unfortunately still exist. He certainly does stand on the shoulders of those who came before him and who fought the good fight. There remains however, that undying resolve that each of us has as a responsibility for assisting in this process. To internally examine who we are and to recommit ourselves to becoming the best and most productive people that we can be.Like Dr. King, the hope that President Obama will unify people and catapult “The Dream Deferred” to heights unimagined are what we are witnessing. For in the end, despite the personal challenges that each of us might face, we can no longer afford to wait for success to knock. The path is being cleared for those who simply want more. Are You Changing Your Oil On Time?

Everyday, I receive information on how to do this or that. I receive information on car warranties or buying a vehicle. When was the last time someone ask, how is your vehicle maintenance going? Did you change your oil today? Did you check your oil today? Did you schedule your oil change?If you answered no, I'm here to help you make a wise decision about the maintenane of your vehicle. Changing the oil in your vehicle is just as important to you eating. Your vehicle needs fresh oil. Your current oil can't wait until you have the time, for a change. Your owner's manual instructs the owner when to change the oil. Some vehicle's oil needs changing at every 5,000 to 7,500 miles. Going over the recommended mileage isn't good for your vehicle. Also, changing the oil too soon isn't good either. There were ads that encouraged oil changes at 3,000 miles. As I stated earlier, vehicles can travel further on their oil. The 3,000 were for oils that were singled weighted. What is single-weighted? Single-weighted oil are 30, 40, or 50 weighted oils. These oils are still around. They come in detergent and non-detergent. But, they aren't used by vehicles. Today's vehicles use two-weighted oils. These oils consist of two-parted oils. Most vehicles use 5w20 or 5w30. There are more special type oils. We will discuss those oils, at another time. Plus, I don't want to make this post too boring for my readers.Locate your owner's manual. This will tell you the weight your vehicle uses. When getting your oil changed, ask the garage what type of oil they're using. Using the proper weighted oil in your vehicle is very imporant. We'll discuss that subject, at a later date too. At this point, I want you to check and change your oil, on time.Happy motoing

Getting back on track!

I have been pushed away from my goals for too long with unexpected issues, but my turbulance in my flight to freedom has brought me new goals and a new focus. I have a two week old baby boy and a 10 year old son and my time off for my pregnancy has cleared my mind. I am now more determined than ever to get Scentaments off of the ground. I've changed my entire look and focus and hope that this will appeal to the public more. I am now offering hand made bath and body sets gift baskets and candles. I would like to use Valentines day as a Kick off for my Brand of items offered I will start taking orders 1/20/09 and end Valentines day orders 2/10/09. Being a woman in our current society is tough. TV shows, magazines, movies, and other media outlets attempt to convince women to measure themselves according to society's standards. However, doing so limits the beauty of a woman. According to the world, you have to be a certain size, height, skin tone and have a certain type of hairstyle or clothing style to be considered beautiful. What does a woman do to uphold her self-image in a world where advertisements are flooded with influences that promote worldly beauty? That's where she draws the line by refusing to conform to society's image of beauty and renews her mind with the Word of God.Due to impossible worldly standards, countless women have developed a poor self–image. Fear of not measuring up has caused them to develop harmful habits to prove their beauty and self—worth. For example, some women may spend all their money trying to keep up with the latest styles in beauty, fashion, and nearly starving themselves just to be thin. However, this type of behavior almost always leads to self destruction.Women who have problems with their self–image are often bitter, angry and attitudinal. When a woman doesn't know how to treat herself, she will most likely mistreat others. The Bible tells us to love our neighbors as ourselves. However, if you've never learned to love yourself, you can't possibly love anyone else.Proverbs 31 is an excellent guide for all women, because this woman doesn't suffer from a poor self—image. Interestingly, the proverb doesn't describe this woman's physical appearance, yet by her works we see her beauty radiated from within. I'm not saying run yourself into the ground trying to do everything this woman did! However, take note of how she lived her life and became a woman who was celebrated above all women. She was a woman of elegance and extraordinary intelligence because she honored God.Proverbs 31:10 says the price of a virtuous woman is far above rubies. She is rare, precious, and esteemed above treasured jewels. As a woman, you have to understand your worth according to God's Word. You can be the woman you've always wanted to be when you begin to see yourself as God sees you.Make a quality decision to define your standard of beauty by the Word of God. Washington, D.C.I am happy to join with you today in what will go down in history as the greatest demonstration for freedom in the history of our nation. [Applause]Five score years ago, a great American, in whose symbolic shadow we stand signed the Emancipation Proclamation. This momentous decree came as a great beacon light of hope to millions of Negro slaves who had been seared in the flames of withering injustice. It came as a joyous daybreak to end the long night of captivity.But one hundred years later, we must face the tragic fact that the Negro is still not free. One hundred years later, the life of the Negro is still sadly crippled by the manacles of segregation and the chains of discrimination. One hundred years later, the Negro lives on a lonely island of poverty in the midst of a vast ocean of material prosperity. One hundred years later, the Negro is still languishing in the corners of American society and finds himself an exile in his own land. So we have come here today to dramatize an appalling condition.In a sense we have come to our nation's capital to cash a check. When the architects of our republic wrote the magnificent words of the Constitution and the declaration of Independence, they were signing a promissory note to which every American was to fall heir. This note was a promise that all men would be guaranteed the inalienable rights of life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.It is obvious today that America has defaulted on this promissory note insofar as her citizens of color are concerned. Instead of honoring this sacred obligation, America has given the Negro people a bad check which has come back marked "insufficient funds." But we refuse to believe that the bank of justice is bankrupt. We refuse to believe that there are insufficient funds in the great vaults of opportunity of this nation. So we have come to cash this check -- a check that will give us upon demand the riches of freedom and the security of justice. We have also come to this hallowed spot to remind America of the fierce urgency of now. This is no time to engage in the luxury of cooling off or to take the tranquilizing drug of gradualism. Now is the time to rise from the dark and desolate valley of segregation to the sunlit path of racial justice. Now is the time to open the doors of opportunity to all of God's children. Now is the time to lift our nation from the quicksands of racial injustice to the solid rock of brotherhood.It would be fatal for the nation to overlook the urgency of the moment and to underestimate the determination of the Negro. This sweltering summer of the Negro's legitimate discontent will not pass until there is an invigorating autumn of freedom and equality. Nineteen sixty-three is not an end, but a beginning. Those who hope that the Negro needed to blow off steam and will now be content will have a rude awakening if the nation returns to business as usual. There will be neither rest nor tranquility in America until the Negro is granted his citizenship rights. The whirlwinds of revolt will continue to shake the foundations of our nation until the bright day of justice emerges.But there is something that I must say to my people who stand on the warm threshold which leads into the palace of justice. In the process of gaining our rightful place we must not be guilty of wrongful deeds. Let us not seek to satisfy our thirst for freedom by drinking from the cup of bitterness and hatred.We must forever conduct our struggle on the high plane of dignity and discipline. We must not allow our creative protest to degenerate into physical violence. Again and again we must rise to the majestic heights of meeting physical force with soul force. The marvelous new militancy which has engulfed the Negro community must not lead us to distrust of all white people, for many of our white brothers, as evidenced by their presence here today, have come to realize that their destiny is tied up with our destiny and their freedom is inextricably bound to our freedom. We cannot walk alone.And as we walk, we must make the pledge that we shall march ahead. We cannot turn back. There are those who are asking the devotees of civil rights, "When will you be satisfied?" We can never be satisfied as long as our bodies, heavy with the fatigue of travel, cannot gain lodging in the motels of the highways and the hotels of the cities. We cannot be satisfied as long as the Negro's basic mobility is from a smaller ghetto to a larger one. We can never be satisfied as long as a Negro in Mississippi cannot vote and a Negro in New York believes he has nothing for which to vote. No, no, we are not satisfied, and we will not be satisfied until justice rolls down like waters and righteousness like a mighty stream.I am not unmindful that some of you have come here out of great trials and tribulations. Some of you have come fresh from narrow cells. Some of you have come from areas where your quest for freedom left you battered by the storms of persecution and staggered by the winds of police brutality. You have been the veterans of creative suffering. Continue to work with the faith that unearned suffering is redemptive.Go back to Mississippi, go back to Alabama, go back to Georgia, go back to Louisiana, go back to the slums and ghettos of our northern cities, knowing that somehow this situation can and will be changed. Let us not wallow in the valley of despair.I say to you today, my friends, that in spite of the difficulties and frustrations of the moment, I still have a dream. It is a dream deeply rooted in the American dream.I have a dream that one day this nation will rise up and live out the true meaning of its creed: "We hold these truths to be self-evident: that all men are created equal."I have a dream that one day on the red hills of Georgia the sons of former slaves and the sons of former slave owners will be able to sit down together at a table of brotherhood.I have a dream that one day even the state of Mississippi, a desert state, sweltering with the heat of injustice and oppression, will be transformed into an oasis of freedom and justice.I have a dream that my four children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin but by the content of their character.I have a dream today.I have a dream that one day the state of Alabama, whose governor's lips are presently dripping with the words of interposition and nullification, will be transformed into a situation where little black boys and black girls will be able to join hands with little white boys and white girls and walk together as sisters and brothers.I have a dream today.I have a dream that one day every valley shall be exalted, every hill and mountain shall be made low, the rough places will be made plain, and the crooked places will be made straight, and the glory of the Lord shall be revealed, and all flesh shall see it together.This is our hope. So let freedom ring from the prodigious hilltops of New Hampshire. Let freedom ring from the mighty mountains of New York. Let freedom ring from the heightening Alleghenies of Pennsylvania!Let freedom ring from the snowcapped Rockies of Colorado!Let freedom ring from the curvaceous peaks of California!But not only that; let freedom ring from Stone Mountain of Georgia!Let freedom ring from Lookout Mountain of Tennessee!Let freedom ring from every hill and every molehill of Mississippi. Embracing Change.

We are on the brink of change; it is taking place all around us. Day by day, moment by moment change is occurring, whether we like it or not. Change is viewed in many ways outwardly but I believe that true change begins within before we ever see the visible signs of an outward manifestation. Two such changes are in fact directly upon us; the first was accomplished years prior to this writing, though the annual recognition is tomorrow and the second has been a long time coming.Tomorrow we acknowledge the birth of, the late, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. which is now recognized nationally as a holiday. Dr. King believed in change. He lived and died trying to bring forth change, records of such efforts as the freedom march and speeches including the famous “I Have a Dream” speech made on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial in 1963 were recorded and are still remembered today.On this Tuesday, the 20th of January 2009, the nation will watch as President-Elect Barack Obama makes history by taking the oath to become the 44th President of the United States of America; the 1st African American to ascend to such an honorable position. President Obama embodies the heart of Dr. King’s “Dream” which he shared with the world. A dream of a people united, experiencing equality for all and having the liberty to pursue purposes and fulfill destinies. The beliefs of both these men are the “truth” of a “changed” way.I am embracing, experiencing and expecting such change in 2009; but, I’m not just writing of the obvious change that is before us. I am looking to give and to receive, to bless and be blessed. I expect 2009 to be the year where all barriers fall down and all obstacles are removed; no more handicaps as they’ve been completely erased from sight. I was having a conversation with one of my male co-workers yesterday and we got on the subject of the characteristics of a successful woman. We began to list all the basics- well educated, great job, good credit and so on until we felt we had a pretty comprehensive list. I thought we did pretty good and I was confident that I encompassed at least 90% of the list.It wasn't until a few hours later that he sent me a text saying the following:"You know what's one of the most important characteristics? Ability to get and keep a fulfilling relationship with a man."Wow.That hadn't even occurred to me. After I gave it some thought, I decided it was a valid characteristic. Of course, we YBR women do not need a man to validate who we are, however, for the most part- participating in a fulfilling, lasting relationship is a goal of many young women. Sadly though, alot of us are not equipped to do just that. Check out some tips below that are sure to turn your relations with men from not so great to huge success!1) Like yourself. IF YOU DON'T THINK YOU ARE BEAUTIFUL, INTERESTING, AND WORTHY OF BEING DATED- then guess what? No man will either. It may seem simple enough, but this one tip truly plays a huge part in why some women never seem to have issues with getting and keeping relationships and other women do. On a sub-conscious level, men are attracted to women who are attracted to themselves! Like yourself- as a matter of fact- LOVE yourself and the men will come running!2) Like men. Seems obvious doesn't it? Well, it actually isn't. How many times this week have you said "All men are dogs" or "There aren't any good men out there" or my personal favorite, "All the good ones are taken..or gay." If this is how you truly feel, then why are you looking for a relationship in the first place? This is the logic the universe sees also and is the reason why so many smart, successful black women are still single. Change your thoughts about men no matter what happened in your past. There are always opportunities for new beginnings.3) Treat every man you meet as a unique human being. This has to be one of the most challenging tips for me, I must admit. There are times when I hear a story from a friend about what a man has done to her or even think back on my own past experiences with men and the anger starts to build up. It's at these times that I may not be as nice as I should be to the next man I encounter. This definitely is NOT the way to go. If you enter a relationship with a man (whether it be platonic or intimate) and are harboring feelings of resentment or ill will, it will eventually begin to manifest itself into your situation. Remember to treat men the way you would want to be treated.4) Go where the men go. This is probably one of the most important tips. Although it is likely, it is not very probable that you will meet your future husband at the nail salon or the supermarket. Try stepping out of your comfort zone and going to different places- try sports bars, adult ed classes in real estate, finance, or car repair, bookstores (especially cafe bookstores, and ski trips. Get involved with volunteer work. Go fishing. Not only will you begin to expand your own horizons and develop new hobbies and interests, you may run into a new love interest.These tips may seem too easy to work, but I assure you they do. Three Tips to Get Your Finances in Order

Ok, so we're a few days into this new year and I hope that you still have your goals/resolutions for 2009 fresh in your mind. If you've already forgotten them (shame on you ;) don't worry- it's time for a refresher course.If you're like me- then you consider yourself to be an independent woman with a good head on her shoulders. You're also ambitious and always up to challenge yourself, right? With that said, I'm sure that one of your goals for 2009 was to get your finances in order. If that's the case check out these fabulous tips that will help you do just that.Figure out where you are.The first step in getting your finances in order is to assess the damage. Carve out at least a two hour block of time and find somewhere to go where you can be fully focused. Gather your bills, bank statements, credit card statements, a phone, blank notebook, and a pen. Take the time to record exact amounts of how much money you owe and how much money you have on hand. Call up each and every creditor if you have to. Don't complete this process until you are confident that you have a clear understanding of exactly what your financial picture looks like. This is the first and most important step in getting your money situation on the right track.Create a spending plan.After you've assessed the damage, it's time for damage control! Take inventory of every item that you spend money on each month. Compare the total figure with the actual amount of money you bring in. Do the two numbers coincide? After you've paid your living expenses do you have enough money left over to save and also put toward paying down debt? If the answer is no then it's time to rework the numbers until you're able to figure out ways to minimize your expenses. Once you've come up with a plan that works... put it into action!Pay yourself first.Don't underestimate the importance of saving. So many times even after we've paid our bills and dug ourselves out of a financial hole, we realize that we are still only one paycheck away from finding ourselves back down at the bottom. In today's economy it is not safe to live paycheck to paycheck. The goal should be to put away at least 10% of your income into a savings account. If you can do more awesome! If you can't, do what you can comfortably afford. In the beginning stages it's more important that you build the habit of saving than the actual number. It helps to make the process automatic.
