How "Private Eyes" Can Increase Profitability

Employers invest valuable time and money in efforts to hire and train honest employees. However, many employers may eventually find that their supposed ‘cream of the crop’ new hire was not as honest as he/she appeared to be. Contrary to the company’s efforts, chances are many employees may not always have the company’s best interest in mind when they are hired. Over time, some employees may develop tendencies that negatively impact the company’s mission or goals. In these instances, the employee can quickly become a huge liability and cost the company hundreds, if not thousands of dollars in losses. Private Investigators are a valuable resource businesses utilize to prevent and deter many fraudulent activities in the workplace. There are many ways businesses can benefit from hiring a Private Investigator. The most common reasons for hiring Private Investigators are for background checks and investigating employee theft.When businesses grow, the excitement often leads to large hiring spurts. In the midst of all the hasty hiring, the need to conduct a thorough background check can sometimes fall through the cracks. Calling a few personal references is not the same as conducting a thorough background check. Hiring quality employees requires serious due diligence. Some businesses mistakenly utilize old internet databases offered by “internet detectives” whose reports do not accurately depict an individual’s background. For example, a company called “Consumer Advice” conducted research to determine the accuracy of such reports. Out of more than 100 internet sites they reviewed, 80% of them did not deliver correct information. (www.consumer-advice.org/BackgroundChecks). A Private Investigator can benefit businesses when accuracy matters. Private Investigators can read deeper into the retrieved data by recognizing potential “red flags” that inexperienced researchers may overlook. A red flag can range from anything like an invalid Social Security Number to finding no record of an individual’s degree or certification. A red flag may even be an active warrant. As a matter of fact, one company had a high price to pay for neglecting to conduct a thorough background check. Case in point: Two employees of a cleaning company were cleaning a home in California. While working in the home, the two apparently roamed around, casing the alarm systems, doors and windows. The pair had previously spent hours in the home as carpet cleaners before they devised their scam. They left the home, only to return several months later to rob the place. The armed robbers were caught ransacking the home and wound up shooting the homeowner. As it turns out, both men had criminal records and felony convictions before they were hired. Needless to say, the company who hired them was charged with negligent hiring and was ordered to pay $11 million in damages. It’s not just about employees taking a few extra ink pens home but may include anything from stealing time, cash and property to employees filing fraudulent Worker’s Compensation claims. Over time, employers may become targets for theft because employees learn their internal systems too well and eventually learn their weaknesses. Time and opportunity may be all an employee needs to commit such crimes. Employee theft costs American businesses billions of dollars each year. The U.S. Chamber of Commerce estimates that employee theft costs American businesses in excess of $40 billion annually. The Chamber of Commerce also reports that an employee is fifteen times more likely to steal from an employer than a non-employee. Private Investigators work with businesses everyday to identify and prove fraudulent insurance claims. Some employees may even stage workplace injuries in order to file for Worker’s Compensation Benefits. Fortunately for businesses, Private Investigators frequently reveal the people who lie about the severity of their injuries. In fact, the majority of the Worker’s Compensation claims that I have personally investigated have proven to be false. Covert investigations of these false claims help businesses save thousands of dollars by reducing the number of insurance settlements that are awarded to undeserving employees.Employers must be vigilant in their efforts to conduct proper background checks and reduce employee theft. Experience has shown that Private Investigators help businesses increase their bottom line by helping them prevent, deter, and investigate various unfavorable workplace situations. A well planned and executed investigation by a licensed Private Investigator can be an effective way to identify those involved with theft and prevent it from recurring. An effective investigation allows employers to have a solid basis for taking corrective action to protect their assets and enables them to seek prosecution against the person(s) involved in the crime. Let’s face it. Businesses are in business to make profit. Regardless of the method in which the crime is committed, your business’ profitability is adversely affected by employee theft and mediocre background checks. Fortunately for business owners, utilizing a set of “private eyes” can help keep their money where it belongs – in their pockets instead of those of dishonest employees.

After spending about 2 hours and pouring over thousands of brand name products I started feeling sick about the tens of thousands of dollars I wasted during my lifetime paying the middle man. Backup Plans?

Well I did it to myself. I was sooo ready to hand over some of the work of my dream that I did not work through everything. So here I am two weeks later and the work I wanted the VA to complete is not done.I could harp on this some more but let me put my bad experience into a question for you. What are your backup plans? Are you a service provider, does anyone count on you getting something done for them? Then you need a back up plan. If something happens to your computer, do you know what you would do?*find an internet cafe (do those still exist?)*go to your library and use computer there*go to FedEx Kinkos and use a computer there*use your phone?And if something happens to your computer where is all your information stored for your clients?* is it on an external drive?*can you only get to it from your computer or any computer?*do you have a paper copySo something has happened to your computer and off to the shop you rush. What else do you do?*do you call all your clients and let them know what happened?*do you wait until your clients call you and then tell them what happened?*do you text or email them with what happened, your alternate plan and timeline?*do you follow up with them every 24 hours or wait until they threaten to pull the contract?*do you charge them the full amount if the delay was less than 24 hours? what about 48 hours?What about 5 days?I need a VA to look for a VA. Seriously it takes time. Jimmy Brown had a great e-mail on 10 easy ways to find outsource vendors. So I am at Elance and Freelancer (changed their name from Getafreelancer) and my head is killing me and I am thinking do I want to take all this time to find a person to do this for me or do I want to spend tthe time doing it myself?If I was planning on staying stressed forever then I would do it myself. However I am planning on going back to my family and life while I continue to work at home so I need to find help, if not for this for something else. The next few days will be interesting.So what are your back up plans? Do you have any? Going to make some? Perfect time to make plans and goals for the new year! What are your suggestions?

Please share your thoughts - Does the Design Make a Difference?Posted in: Small BusinessAs Infusionsoft’s senior graphic designer who puts together all the design you see from our company, I thought it was time to help share a little bit of my expertise with you. A common question entrepreneurs and small businesses ask me is if design matters for their business. Trust me, I pick my battles between copy and design on a healthy basis, but I want to elaborate on why design matters for small business.Take a look around you right now. What do you see? Maybe a computer, product packaging, pens, pictures on the wall, logos, ads and a cell phone? All of these things have been designed. Some better designed than others, but all have had thought put into them whether simple or complex.The first scenario that comes to my mind when thinking about design (or lack thereof) in a small business is restaurants. When I sit down to eat at a Mom-and-Pop restaurant I’m excited for the possibility of finding a diamond in the rough that provides better food and service than your typical franchise. I get a little apprehensive (more so than others as I’m a designer) when they hand me the menu that has obviously been designed in Word. I start thinking this can go one of two ways – either the food is amazing and I won’t care what the menu looks like or it will be obvious to me why they can’t afford to get the menus designed.What does this mean? It means that design makes me form opinions and judgments before I have the means to establish a true judgment on the company. This is true of all businesses. We are all visual people even if we are not all designers. People can make false assumptions about you and your business based on your appearance and branding.Furthermore, a well-designed piece that doesn’t convey the right message is not a well designed piece. In this case, if fewer design gets the correct message across then it is the better choice. Remember you can always test designs before you make a final choice and once you are using something, you can always improve from there.SMALL BUSINESS DESIGN EXERCISE:Go collect your business collateral and take an objective hard look at it again for the first time. (Ideally, take it to someone you know who doesn’t know much about your business.)What does it make you/them think of?How does it make you/them feel?What is the message you/they are getting?Are these thoughts and feelings the ones that you want to portray?If not, consider what you can change to improve the image of your company.Not everyone will have the same impression, but you want to do your best to convey your message through design.Does design matter for small businesses?
