Stood up when it was hard. Stood up when it wasn't popular. And because that somebody stood up, a few more stood up. And then a few thousand stood up. And then a few million stood up. And standing up, with courage and clear purpose, they somehow managed to change the world.”BARACK OBAMA, speech, Jan. 8, 2008Family, in 2009, make small steps towards your goals and dreams. Anything is possible. Remember to put God first and your family and everything will fall into place. Do what you can for others. Networking

African Entrepreneurs Network understands that all businesses are not created equal. Therefore, we created a network designed to help all level of businesses. Small businesses in general do require exposure in order to be successful. Companies pay a lot of money to get in front of millions of consumers because they recognize that marketing is required in order to generate revenue. Television commercials account for most of the advertising of goods and services, and they have proven to be very successful. Magazines, likewise, are successful in their own rights; they also have a share in the market of advertising. The more popular the magazine, the more the likelihood for a certain ad to be properly circulated. Now there is the Internet, the information super highway, where traffic is mind boggling. What better medium for one to advertise and reach a very large percentage of the population. Then, there is also the cost of an ad. Advertising can be expensive if you advertise on television and the popular magazines. However, the Internet can also give you the same exposure if you advertise in the right forum. African Entrepreneurs Network encourages its members to advertise because it works. Anyone who wants to be successful in business is going to require some exposure. The network and its members also create a community of business owners who share ideas and also advertise their businesses at low cost. There is referral marketing within the community and the members support one another's business. African Entrepreneurs Network has created a "Shopping Mall" of businesses that is visited and supported by the members of the network.Congratulations to all who have taken the initial step of business ownership, and is presently sitting in the driver's seat. Now is the time to put on your navigation system to direct you to your destination. With that we welcome you to the African Entrepreneurs Network where your small business ownership dreams will be realized with the assistance of our advisors, counselors, and our network members.Ola AkinsanyaCEO and Founder of African Entrepreneurs Networkhttp://africanceos.ning.comhttp://africanentrepreneur.net

This little light of mine, I'm gonna let it shine

Aging in the African American Community

"This little light of mine, I'm gonna let it shine." My granddaughter sang this song to me to remind me to be present and available for my family to be thankful for my health and ability to maintain good health. It is awesome that I can play games with her and prepare my own meals, bathe myself, dress myself and maintain my own daily survival. There are many of my peers in my age group that cannot take care of themselves.Remember when grandma could watch the children and cook a big holiday meal, or granddad would repair our car and give us money when we needed it. When their health began declining and they needed us, we were not available.Omitunde, Publisher of African American Family ConnectionAn online magazine about African American Family values and community.Visit AAFC for the latest issue each month and a copy of "The Ripple Effect".http://www.africanamericanfamilyconnection.com

Five Steps to Improving Your Self Esteem

Five Steps to Improving Your Self EsteemBy: Kimberly S. WareLow self-esteem can keep you from reaching your dreams. Imagine yourself being chained up. The chain represents low self-esteem. You see your doors of opportunity right in front of you. You start to run your opportunity but the chain of low self-esteem keeps you from reaching your fullest potential. Believe in yourself and know that spirit will guide you to your purpose. There are five major steps you can take to build self-esteem. The first step is to stop putting yourself down. Brothers and sisters know that you are special and somebody.Number two start believing and loving yourself. One exercise that helped me over the years is the Louise Hay’s mirror work exercise. What you do is look in a mirror and say it with feeling.” I am beautiful I am special and I am somebody and most of all I love myself.” And it’s OK to say it with an attitude! You must know it, say it, speak it, and believe it!Number three find your purpose. Start looking at some of the things that interests you, such as your hobby. What are you good at? Everyone has a divine gift. My gift is to write and speak. What’s yours? If you don’t know, then you must do some soul searching and eventually you will find out what the creator has put here to do.Number four is to let go of negative people and bad habits. This is what a lot of people have a heard time doing. If the people you associate yourself with are constantly putting you down, calling you outside your name, telling you that you are ugly, stupid, and a nobody and won’t amount to anything then cut them lose. Let these people go. Like the comedian Martin Lawrence always say, “Get The Steppin!” These negative people are not worth it.Number five you must walk out on faith and make your dreams a reality. I took steps to making my dreams a reality when I was eighteen years old; I first started writing my first novel. And you too can start taking steps to making your dreams a reality. You must work it people! Stop seeing yourself as being unattractive and see yourself as a beautiful spiritual being. And remember that beauty is beyond skin deep, it is what’s inside that really counts.Excerpt from Kimberly S. Ware's upcoming book, “Spiritual Pathway: A Guide to Accomplishing Your Dreams" (www.kimberlyware.com)

Coping With Adversity

Overcoming adversity can be very difficult during a time of despair. At first you may feel pain, but over time you must have the strength to overcome any life changing dilemma.Life can be like a roller coaster ride with many ups and downs and twists and turns. You must hold on tight for the bumpy ride. It may be scary at first but don’t give up. Adversity is like an adrenaline rush of being on a roller coaster of feeling fear and uncertainty. Life can be rough and bumpy but just like a roller coaster ride it will come to an end and your particular adversity situation shall too come to past.Don’t feel alone during the time of grief; you are not alone. As human beings we all face an adversity situation in our lives and it is up to us to follow the right path for our particular life situation.Adversity means change. Change is often difficult to face especially when you are trying to stay focused. Adversity can range from anything such as starting a new job, getting a divorce, losing a loved one, or losing a job. In life anything can happen to cause us to have to make a drastic change in our lives. It is up to us to follow in God’s light and have the strength and ability to move on.Four Basic Steps to Dealing with Adversity:1. Ask God for guidance (What to do?)2. Prayer/Meditation (To clear your mind and build faith)3. To release your fears and pain (To gain strength and courage)4. To remember your purpose and get back on track. (To stay focused)It is OK to ask God for guidance. God loves you and will not lead you astray. Most people use prayer and meditation as a way for guidance. Prayer and meditation clears your mind and builds faith. The last step is to remember your purpose and to get back on track. Facing an adversity situation can be very difficult and scary but do not lose faith that you can overcome your problems. Believe in God and follow in God’s light for strength and courage. Adversity may hurt for a while but you may learn from this life dilemma and grow both spiritually and mentally.Excerpt from Kimberly Ware's book, "Heal My Wings: A Healing Guide for Women". www.kimberlyware.com

Urban Fiction, Hip Hop, and Domestic Violence

Urban Fiction, Hip Hop, and Domestic ViolenceKimberly Ware Enlightens Young Adult Readers on Social IssuesAtlanta author, Kimberly Ware, wrote a riveting novel series called The Nia Trilogy. With its urban style, ranging form domestic violence to teen pregnancy it is a story for young adults ages 15 and up.Within the U.S., nearly three out of four (74%) of Americans personally know someone who is or has been a victim of domestic violence. 30% of Americans say they know a woman who has been physically abused by her husband or boyfriend in the past year (Allstate Foundation National Poll on Domestic Violence, 2006).The Nia Trilogy: Book #1 - The Age of Innocence is filled with literary imagery on the delicate issues of domestic violence. The story takes places in Bronx, New York. The main character, Nia Yolanda Chavez, is biracial of African American and Puerto Rican descent. The novel series starts off during Nia's adolescent years of growing up in James Monroe housing projects in Soundview, Bronx. As a troubled teen, Nia has to deal with struggles of having an unstable crack addict mother and an abusive stepfather. In modern society, domestic violence is still an epidemic among young women. With the negative portrayal of women in the Hip industry and derogatory lyrics about females, it gives the impression to the public that domestic violence towards women is acceptable and is the norm particularly among African Americans.Over the years, there has been documented accounts among famous recording artists, that has often times been brushed under the rug by the media. Often time the victim is not as famous or is not as wealthy as the celebrity and that is why the domestic violence case is a lot times overlooked. Unfortunately the victims of domestic violence are ridiculed and chastised. Surprisingly the harsh backlash and biased judgment are by other peers particularly other women; these women often times have not experienced domestic violence first hand and therefore can not understand, nor relate to the victims who have suffered this cruel and hideous crime."As a young adult, I was victim of domestic violence, now I am a survivor. I wrote The Nia Trilogy because I believed that young adults need to be aware about the truths of domestic violence. Often time, it is kept a secret amongst family and friends when it actually needs to be brought into the light. As a society we should not turn our backs on anyone who is suffering from abuse, the truth needs to be told," stated Kimberly Ware.Kimberly Ware is the author of Heal My Wings: A Healing Guide for Women, Heal My Wings: A Healing Journal and Workbook for Women. Kimberly Ware is a spiritual healer and teacher. From my heart 2 yours I wanted to take this time to tell YOU that I am so grateful to have you your friendship, your caring and even your love in my life. May YOU received this message and be truly grateful and blessed with your life on a daily basis. My wish for you is Comfort on difficult days, Smiles when sadness intrudes, Rainbows to follow the clouds, Laughter to kiss your lips, Sunsets to warm your heart, Hugs when your spirits sag, Beauty for your eyes to see, Friendships to brighten your being, Faith so that you can believe, Confidence for when you are in doubt, Courage to know and truly believe in yourself, Patience to accept the truth no matter what it may be and Love to totally complete your life.Believe and have faith to know that Prayer is one of the best free gifts we receive and in my heart I say a prayer for YOU each day. There is no cost, just a lot of reward. Make sure you take a few minutes of your time each day to pray and give Thanks, believing and having faith that God will answer YOU for God has never taken His eye off of you, He is always near. He lives to hear your heartbeat and He loves to hear your prayers. He know all that is in your heart and all of your needs, for HE may not come when you want HIM to but He will come when you need HIM to, for God is Good all the time!May everyday be all that you need it to be, and that a kind word, a reassuring touch, and a warm smile be yours every day of your life, and may you give these gifts as well as receive them. May the pain you have known and the conflict you have experienced give you the strength to walk through life facing each new situation with courage and optimism for stubbornness is a weak imitation of strength. Remember, those whose lives you have touched and whose have touched yours are always a part of you, even if the encounters were less than you would have wished. May God manifest himself each day in your life in ways that you have never experienced, and all your joys be fulfilled, your dreams become closer, and your prayers be answered. There’s nothing or no one in the world that can stop the blessings God has for you....Believe that! For YOU I pray for peace, healing, health, happiness, prosperity, joy, true love and that you never waste not fresh tears over old grief nor be afraid to try new things, as you have the strength and the Determination to keep moving forward as you learn to see everyone with your heart not your eyes . Remember that life is short so live it to the fullest and to be kind to all that may cross your path for each and everyone you meet is going through something themselves and everyone you see and meet is full of possibilities and as your pray for yourself take the time to also pray for others. Remember to be gentle with yourself and others for we are all children of chance, and the smallest act of caring has the potential to turn a life around, and that the true blessings and true happiness can not be bought with money but felt within your heart and soul. Care for those around you. Look past your differences for their dreams are no less than yours, and that their choices in life no more easily made. Everyone needs someone....But just in knowing that someone cares and holds us close in their thoughts and prayers for only the knowledge that we're understood makes everyday living feel wonderfully good and we rob ourselves of life's greatest need when we lock up our hearts and fail to heed the outstretched hand reaching to find a kindred spirit whose heart and mind are lonely and longing to somehow share our joys and sorrows and to make us aware that life's completeness and richness depends on the things we share with our loved ones and friends. I want to remind you daily just how beautiful/handsome, special, unique, loved, wonderful and awesome you are. Rise up every morning, telling yourself that "Today will be my Happy Day". Say "I believe I will and can handle any problems successfully today. I believe something good will happen to me!" and "I truly love me....for I deserve the best life has to offer everyday".Remember that God is:The shepherd who guides us,The Lord who provides for us,The voice who brings peace in the storm,The physician who heals the sick, andWhatever you need—He is.Remember that someone is thinking of you today……and praying you are blessed in every special way!Do This For Me but most of all Do This For Yourself! If you love someone....Then tell them! Has someone been an influence in your life.....Then give them a call! Has someone made a difference in your life.....Then write them a letter or send them an e-mail! Don't let another day go by without letting that person know. There is something special about a written letter that expresses feelings of love towards another for life is too short to leave kind words unsaid. Allow them to be free beings. Give and don’t expect. Advise, but don’t order. Ask, but never demand. Let the beauty of what you love be what you do.A Short Prayer For Self:God, grant me the serenity to accept the people I cannot Change, the courage to change the one I can, and the wisdom to Know that person is me.'God’s Promises To You:“ ‘I will comfort you….’ ” ISAIAH 66:13 TLB“ ‘…I will strengthen you….’ ” ISAIAH 41:10 NIV“ ‘I will give you peace….’ ” LEVITICUS 26:6 TLB“ ‘…I will carry you….’ ” ISAIAH 46:4 NIV“ ‘…I will listen to you.’ ” JEREMIAH 29:12 NIV“ ‘I will protect you….’ ” ACTS 26:17 TLB“ ‘…I will give you rest.’ ” MATTHEW 11:28 NIV“ ‘…I will be with you.’ ” GENESIS 31:3 NIVNamaste!I honor the place in you in which the entire Universe dwells.I honor the place in you which is of Love, of Truth, of Light and of Peace. When you are in that place in you, and I am in that place in me, We are One!The Light & Spirit In Me Recognizes The Light & Spirit In YouMzGloria

Heart of a Criminal Defense Legal Marketer

Greetings everyone! The first time I heard this parable, I was working in the marketing department for the Mississippi Credit Union System. I had the pleasure to meet one of the top motivational speakers, Mr. Willie Jolley. As part of the marketing team, my job was to ensure he got from point A to point B through parts of a 3 day convention. There were several things he said in route and also in the lobby of the convention, however this parable from him set the core for how we operate."Everyday in Africa a gazelle wakes up knowing he has to out run the fastest lion or get eaten. Everyday in Africa a lion wakes up knowing he has to out run the fastest gazelle or starve to death. So it doesn't matter whether you are a lion or a gazelle, when the sun comes up you'd better be running"I know many of you have heard this. My first time was then. Marketing controls a large portion of the financial success of any law firm or any business for that matter. Marketing managers are accountable to everyone who receive a paycheck from that business. When marketing has personal problems, has the blues, or wakes up on the wrong side of the bed, the firm or business feels it in their bottom line. It is more than a job. It is the key to everyone's quality of life. Whatever the personal circumstances of the marketing personnel the motto is, When the sun comes up you'd better be running. There is nothing more humbling than seeing a picture of a receptionists or paralegals family on their desk.Marketing does not keep the same hours as the rest of the firm. Operations is structured from 9 to 5. Direct marketing is different from other forms of marketing. Direct marketing requires (Call to action) one-on-one real-time with potential clients and that requires a great deal of the marketers time. (On call 24/7) and ready to change strategies at a moments notice. Heart characteristics are commitment, dedication, and discipline. The drive or heart of marketing must be willing to go that extra mile. The attitude of your marketing team and how they operate affects others. Time, energy, and imagination are vital to marketing success. Everything has to be done in time and well executed. Direct marketing is filled with planning a-lot of mini events. Off timing or bad execution halts momentum of incoming revenue. There will be a drought until the machine is oiled again. Some businesses do not have the luxury or financially stable to re-prime the pump. The heart of a legal marketer must understand what is at stake and treat this as more than just a job. Legal marketers get up running everyday to protect a way of life.If your marketing manager does not identify with this next story, a new marketing manager is needed:There was this Young Creative Inventor who built a wind machine with no motor. He showed it to his Wise Uncle. His Wise Uncle praised him for this one-of-a-kind wind machine. An Investor contacted the Young Creative Inventor and told him he was interested in mass producing his wind machine and said he had only a window of tomorrow at 5:30 to test drive the unique wind machine with no motor. The Young Creative Inventor and his Wise Uncle were excited and then realized there had been no wind in 2 days. They were both nervous at the thought of no wind. They waited to see what the morning would bring. At sun up there was no wind. At 10:00am there was no wind and at 1:30pm the wind report said there would be no wind at 5:30. The Young Creative Inventor became hysterical. Then Wise Uncle told him to calm down and that there would be wind by 5:30. The Young Creative Inventor was stunned. He asked, "Wise Uncle how!?" Wise Uncle walked to the phone, dialed a number. The Young Creative Inventor asked, "Who are you calling?" Wise Uncle said, "SHHHH! I'm on an important call." (Yes, this is Wise Uncle. How are you? Well, I need your help. God, I need to talk to you about your wind.)It is always a Blessing to share. Dream your world!Almost forgot the most important attribute of the heart of a legal marketer. PASSION.
