When you wash your hair, does it seem really dry and brittle? Have you ever avoided washing your hair for weeks at a time, some of us for months, because you just knew it was going to take a few days for your hair to come back to life; to soften up or feel moisturized?Well, the reason for the excessive dryness is that washing the hair with certain shampoos strips it of all its moisture because of the "bad ingredients" the majority of shampoos contain. Further damage is actually being done to the hair if you "repeat" as the bottle suggests.Approximately 90% of all shampoos contain Sodium Laureth Sulphate (SLES), and Sodium Lauryl Sulphates (SLS), which can be found in common household detergents such as dishwashing liquids, hand soap, washing powder, and many others. These ingredients function is to create foaming action. I use to think that the more suds, the better the shampoo was working, when actually this is just a myth. SLS and SLES may lead to deficient hair property, corroded hair follicles and inhibited hair growth, contributing to hair loss.SLS and SLES are possibly two of the most dangerous ingredients in personal care products and according to American College of Toxicology. Both SLS and SLES can cause malformation in children's eyes. Other research has indicated SLS may be damaging to the immune system, especially within the skin.I know 90% is a huge number of shampoos that you must stay away from, but that still leave 10% and fortunately you only need one or two good ones. Any local health food store will have a wide variety of different shampoos you can use. Or, you can purchase some awesome, ultra moisturizing shampoo from me! www.fabulousblackwoman.comNow that you know the correct shampoos to use to benefit your hair's health, you no longer have an excuse to go more than a week without washing your hair. I know every week sounds like a lot to the women that are used to washing their hair on relaxer day only, but the benefits will far outweigh the small inconvenience. Water is our hair's best friend and many Black women who have realized this have started to wash their hair daily or every other day, resulting in healthier hair.Moisture is the number one component to growing long black hair and all moisture is derived from water. Not only does washing the hair cleanse the hair and scalp but the massaging motion will stimulate circulation in the scalp. Increase the benefits by adding a few drops of peppermint oil to your shampoo.Even after finding the perfect shampoo, it is a good idea to either use a clarifying shampoo which will cut through any buildup. An apple cider vinegar or a baking soda rinse can also clarify the scalp and can be done as regularly as every six to eight weeks and then you can return to your regular shampoo.

Winter Hair Care Tips

The winter is here and in full effect in Michigan; which means a change of wardrobe, driving conditions and should mean a change in your hair care regimen. If you were lax in your hair care during the warmer months, you may have survived with minor damage, but if you do not take some serious precautions during the colder months, come Spring, you will definitely regret it. Because the winter months can wreak havoc on your hair, it’s very important to choose low maintenance styles so that you do not have to comb or brush often. It’s also a great idea to incorporate a routine that causes very little stress on your hair such as letting the hair air dry instead of blow drying it; finger combing the hair instead of using an actual comb; or if you do use a comb, use a wide tooth comb. Also, chose good moisturizing hair care products that do not contain mineral oil, paraffin, petrolatum, SLS or SLES, as all of these cause dryness....read more

Journey to Beautiful Healthy Hair...AGAIN

Starting Point

I didn’t really make any New Year’s resolutions, but I did set a goal for my hair for this year. I am going on an exciting vacation in July and I want my hair to be at its absolute best. For the first couple of years of my hair journey, I took impeccable care of my hair. I washed, deep conditioned it and twisted it faithfully. I experienced growth OUT OF THIS WORLD. My hair grew longer in two years than it had ever grown during my lifetime. Since I’ve become and entrepreneur and I pretty much working around the clock, I’ve neglected my own hair terribly. I’ve gone from washing it weekly to every other week! Sometimes it gets deep conditioned, sometimes it doesn’t. I use to take time to separate my hair before washing it to avoid the dreadful detangling process, now I just jump in the shower, wash and go! Before I go any further I would like to take this moment to apologize to my lovely tresses and to tell them that I do love them and I am begging for their forgiveness! Fortunately my hair didn’t get too damaged because it was in such great condition to start, but I am looking to gain 4” of new growth (trimming 1” so ending with about 3”) by July. I want my hair to be SUPER soft, manageable, and healthy so here’s what my regimen will be:•Get braid extensions•Wash EVERY Friday (Sweet Nature Natural Shampoo) http://www.fabulousblackwoman.com/Shampoo.html•Deep Condition Every Friday (Sweet Nature Stimulating Deep Conditioner) http://www.fabulousblackwoman.com/LoveDeepConditioner.html•Moisturize Daily (Sweet Daily Growth Spray) http://www.fabulousblackwoman.com/Moisturizingspray.html•Apply Growth Serum every other day (Sweet Nature follicle stimulator) http://www.fabulousblackwoman.com/spiritfolliclestimulator.html•Massage daily for 10 minutes•Take vitamins Daily http://www.fabulousblackwoman.com/HairVitamins.html•Get extension re-done every 6-8 weeksCheck out OVER 120 Testimonials on Sweet Nature products!http://public.fotki.com/AngelNapps/guide-to-growing-yo/book/viewcomments.html

Is Your Hair Style Causing You To Lose Your HAIR?

Traction Alopecia, a hair loss condition caused by constant pulling or tension over a long period generally occurs in persons who wears tight braids, especially "cornrows" that lead to high tension, pulling and breakage of hair. This condition can lead to temporary or permanent hair loss due to damage to the hair follicles. This condition is most common in African-American women and men who braid their hair too tightly, it is reversible if diagnosed early on and the abuse stops. In Traction Alopecia, hair loss is often in the frontal and temporal regions, when the hair is constantly pulled back in a ponytail, bun or cornrows. Although, it can also appear where ever the hair is pulled to tightly; for example in the areas were plaits or cornrows are tight. Traction Alopecia can also occur due to over processing the hair with dyes and relaxers, so it’s imperative to follow instructions closely and to do a strand test to make sure the hair is strong enough to withstand these types of treatments. The obvious way to stop traction and traumatic alopecia is by wearing styles that aren’t too tight and be sure to switch up your hair style. Do not be afraid to stop your braider if they are pulling the hair too tightly and again, be mindful of the chemicals you are having applied or are applying to your hair. Alopecia is detecting it early. Hair styles that put unnecessary strain on the hair root must be changed for "looser, gentler hair style. Unfortunately, no medical treatment is available to reverse late-stage traction alopecia. Hair grafts have been identified as the only practical solution, but this can be very expensive and in some cases painful. For more information on growing Black Hair; check out www.fabulousblackwoman.com o check out my book

Tips for healthy hair

Long, short, thick, thin and or chemically processed, you can have healthy hair. What is healthy hair? It is hair in optimal condition. EVEN hair having had some sort of chemical process which has changed the texture and or color can be healthy hair. It just needs attentive care. In order to have chemically processed healthy hair you must first be aware of the things you are ingesting, foods, vitamins and medications these all play a vital part in the health of the hair. No matter the combination of chemical processes you have chosen to do to have done, healthy hair begins with what you put into your body. Food, vitamins and even medications can determine the hairs health. Consulting with your physician and or dermatologist is a great way to determine if your hair is not healthy due to an internal problem.Taking care of your scalp is a very close second in acquiring and keeping healthy hair. Part of scalp care requires us to be informed about what is being used on the hair and scalp, from the chemical processes to the home maintenance, procedures, tools and products. Knowing our natural hair texture, coarse, fine, thick, thin, kinky, wavy, straight, the categories and combinations go on….. but consult with your stylist become knowledgeable of what is in the products you are using on your hair so you know what does and does not work for you hair type. After you have done this you then need to carefully choose your hair styling tools. Brushes and combs are not all the same there is a wide range and tools used on the wrong hair type can be killer for the hair, causing short stubby breakage, split ends or even worse, balding. But when you use the right tools you may find that spending hours styling your hair is a thing of the past. Healthy hair styles a lot easier you’ll find that it has memory and body, no matter the texture. Split ends are going to come even when you are doing everything right but they do not have to be the hair destroyer. Regular trims keep the split ends from running up the hair shaft and causing you to have to cut more off than desired. On healthy hair in excellent condition, 1/8th to ½ inch should be trimmed every other month. Styling tools and products don’t always have to be expensive to get the job done but don’t be afraid to spend a little more when the product or tools is hands down the best. Some styling products have money back guarantees and all electric styling tools should have warranties. I hope you have noticed the theme for healthy hair and that is to be informed.-B. beautiful, mind, body, spirit.
