targetmarket After countless conversations with entrepreneurs who have difficulty driving traffic to their business, I've come to realize most of them would say yes. When asked the question, "Does picking a target market hurt your pocket?" most folks either come out and say "yes" or something like, "I don't want to focus on one group and look like I'm turning anyone away." (Sound Familiar) They (maybe you) are afraid to pick a target market out of fear of losing customers. To that response I have to ask, "When you market to everybody and nobody is listening, don't you still lose?" The thing that really hurts your pocket is this fear, which is in turn preventing you from achieving your true objective of getting customers and building your own business. I talk about the 3 things blocking your business in my (audio conversation, which you can listen to here) and FEAR is one of those big blocks that can stop you for being a successful entrepreneur. Trying to pitch your product to anybody or trying to make your service look appealing to everybody is never going to get your business the kind of attention it really needs. Let me dig alittle deeper here… As far as my business is concerned my target market isn't black women. My target market isn't even black business women. I specifically focus on black women solopreneurs who want to start or improve their online business using low cost marketing strategies. While that sounds like a mouthful, it is for and all about a very specific group that appeals to me because that is who I am. I guess I'm kind of a narcissist, wanting to work with myself (lol). Seriously though, when you define your ideal customer from head to toe, it makes it easier for you to find and attract them. Perfect example, I recently finished a web design project for a client whose business is senior care services. At first glance, you might think her target is a senior in need of a home care attendant, but not necessarily. Her core target market is actually comprised of local area middle-aged children of seniors looking for professionals to assist in the care of their parents. Understanding her market allows her to talk their language and shed light on their issues. These are things that you can NOT do when you blindly put your business out there in the hopes that somebody will buy. Remember when I talked about 'Spaghetti Marketing', just throwing stuff out their and praying something sticks, I told you its messy business and it doesn't work as effectively as picking a focus. When you lack a target market, you can’t use the right images to attract potential customers or even say the right words that trigger the right customer to buy. You can't do any of these things if you don’t first define who your right customer is. I’ve found in most cases the problem for many struggling entrepreneurs is not the product or the service, it’s their lack of experience when it comes to marketing. I’ve started doing my one-one-one consultations for the women in my SistaSense Circle and the common issue across the board is showing them (and you) that it pays to focus on a specific area for a specific audience. I know we all want to do big things and have big businesses but believe me when I say you have to start somewhere. I’m almost sure that if you are blocked in your business chances are you haven’t effectively defined your focus. Funny enough, once you effectively define your target market you’ll see how much easier it is to get more people to follow you. But the proof is in the pudding; keep reading because below this I decided to share with you an email I received this morning from Rickey, one of the many men who enjoy reading SistaSense.com. I do have male customers and non-black clients who I also love to work with! As a matter of fact, one of the last Ning Network Designs I did was for a client in Australia! I say this to show you that the people who really want what you have to offer are going to take advantage of it, whether they are in your target market or not. SO fight the fear and pick a focus. Otherwise you’ll be the only thing that’s really hurting your pocket. A Message in response to post Don't Work With Black Women (Period):
LaShanda, I met you via Multiple Shades of You, and was completely impressed with your professionalism and service delivery. You have stayed the course ( helping others help themselves) and done exceptionally well. So, as it is said, Keep On Keeping On!!! You have addressed as an ongoing issue, both genders deal with i.e "Don't work with Black Men" LOL same issues. You have been a huge encouragement for me, so this man, thanks you. - Rickey | Juniques Multi Cultural Connections
Last thing, don’t forget that I’m ready to help you find your focus. You still have time to either join my SistaSense Circle OR just schedule a one-on-one consultation. Related Post: Spaghetti Marketing is Messy Business

Don’t Work With Black Women (Period)

workingwithblackwomen Let me start off by saying if you leave me a funky comment (lol), I’m going to assume you just read the title GOT really offended and decided to go OFF on me before I put You On to some things I’ve heard, learned, and experienced as far as working with black women online. Now before I go any further, let me be clear (as I’m sure you already know this), I am a black women entrepreneur / blogger who works mainly with black women, but what a LOT of black women are telling me is that folks tell them “Don’t Work With Black Women (Period).” Sistas you know this, you’ve heard it, and maybe you believe it …. point being that’s what folks are saying. The rub or the kicker here is THAT many black women that I work with, myself included feel compelled to work with other black women or women of color in general. While there is a stigma around it and not much money in it (on the surface it seems) we are driven to do it. The fact is that as black women we know that we aren’t as targeted by mainstream media as much as we would like, so many of us with visions of changing the world feel compelled to do our part to put black women in the forefront of the conversation. The only problem here is that we as all know words DON’T pay the bills, so while we are trying to DO PRO-BLACK WOMAN Things online that make us feel like our destinies are being fulfilled we are coming up against the whispers, worries, and the realities surrounding the idea ‘Don’t Work With Black Women (Period)’. So what is the REAL Problem here and what is my point? I’m about to air out our dirty laundry y’all, so excuse me while I open the windows (because it’s going to get funky lol). With the recession and even a few years before it, we have seen a growing number of black women entrepreneurs (especially online). Many black women entrepreneurs online see the net as a space where we can afford to create our visions in the form of blogs, coaching, books, movies, fashion, etc. BUT many of us are having a hard time getting the job done. Either the large companies don’t see our market as a market that pays (so we can't get big sponsors and ad contracts like well let's be real - white bloggers online) OR we aren’t buying black amongst ourselves for an exhausting list of reasons. You’ve heard it before, everybody wants to work with you or be on your website BUT they can’t afford to pay or don’t THINK they need what you’re offering. SO in the end we just have a growing number of black women online with amazing ideas and absolutely no profit generators. A small group of us figure out how to rise above the pack, stick in there for years and keep going while the rest quietly fade away, because no one was really looking at them in the first place. I had to get that out because that my friends is the truth. We groan about it in our homes, write about it on our blogs, vent about it amongst each other, but that’s how it is which is why folks keep screaming, ‘Don’t Work With Black Women !’ and you know what I do …. (lol) I work with black women. I am determined to work with this group on my terms because I know if I do anything else… if I fake it and focus on white women or just everybody so I’m more main stream, I’ll get frustrated like many of my sista bloggers and feel like I’m selling out. I know if I force it and just pitch to black women with corporate gigs and nice pocket books, I’ll look fake because that isn’t who I am. I know I’ll lose it all if I try to be anything other than who I am because in the end all the posers trying to sell things and be who they aren’t STILL aren’t making money so in the end isn’t it better to be happy by my own standards than try to live up to or fall into everyone else’s? Yes! I say yes, because it’s working for me. No, I’m not a six figure sister yet and I won’t lie to you and say that I am. No, I am not getting even everyone on board, even with all my buzz. As a matter of fact, I started my SistaSense Circle to focus on working with 10 black sistas who want to learn about this stuff and you know what… of the thousands of women in my circle I only have 5 sistas who are on board, but that’s OK… because I know we’ve got a lot of issues separating us… I know it is not easy even having a circle of thousands of black women to get us to support one another, invest in our businesses, and build up what we are doing because HELL we have had hundreds of years of poverty, slavery, and self-destructive negativity beat us down so much that it’s going to take more than just a few emails from me to convince sistas my circle is where they need to be. BUT guess what… I work with Black Women (Period) Because I don’t see it as out of thousands of black women online I just got 5 women in my circle. I see it as out of millions of black women in this world, these 5 women chose me. They believe in me, they are inspired by me, they are excited about what we are going to do together in the next 4 works and that makes me happy because this is what I want to do. And they are exactly the type of people I’ve always wanted to work with. And what makes this absolutely fabulous is at the end of the day I am still working, and what I do is still working without big names to back me, without big companies to sponsor me, without a 9 to 5 job to balance me, without a friend or family member to finance me I have built something authentic that allows me to work with Black Women on my terms as an established business owner. I’m not free, I’m not cheap, and I’m not over the top expensive I’m just exactly the person I could afford which is why I speak to the women who need me and invest in themselves because they know working with me is a realistic option. I’ve got no fancy dresses to put on. No glam shots or big house to stand in front of. All I’ve got is my brain, my smile, and my truth. My bills are paid; my car note is cool, my babies looking cute and my families doing fine. I think by those standards alone I am doing exactly what I know so many of my hard working, online black women are striving to do but cannot and for that alone I am truly blessed … truly thankful that God keeps giving me the vision and the strength to just be me. And along the way, if I am helping more black women work through these challenges and get the online world working for them, that means by my standards my destiny has truly been fulfilled. I’ve been building black websites online for over 10 years now. By some folks standards I haven’t been seen yet, by my standards I know for my people I’m already in their line of vision. As my hubby always tells me, I am a pioneer and I guess he’s right. What I am telling you, Innovators do exactly what they are NOT told to do. So if you are struggling with your authenticity, if you are struggling with your visibility, if you are struggling to make it online and make online work for you listen to yourself, be yourself (period). This past weekend I was in Atlanta again for the annual Happlily Natural Day. If you are into buying one of a kind african inspired everything it was the place to be. The vendors (myself included) had so many original products to see. I think at one point I was overwhelmed with all the creativity and the quality of products. I'm still thinking about all the funky purses, jewelry, art and apparel that I saw.

People came out, but the event did not pull in the crowd that I anticipated. I made the best of it though. I got my networking mack on and I met a lot of creative and conscious minded black folk. I hope to be able to share some of those products on the website soon. Who says we can't support and buy black? The devil is a lie. I saw it for myself this weekend. I think we may be on to something.

How to Write a Winning Nursing Scholarship Essay

Prepare a clear outline for your essay. *Nursing scholarship programs are looking for essays that present a clear thought pattern. You can make sure that your scholarship essay is presented in a clear manner by creating a simple outline. Your outline should include three main parts, the introduction, body and conclusion.

The introduction should capture your readers’ attention and introduce the main points you will discuss in your essay. The body of your essay should be broken out into several paragraphs that present the main points of the essay. The main points should be supported with facts, thoughts, ideas, quotes and other material which will hold your readers’ interest. The conclusion of your essay should restate the main idea of your essay. It is also effective to refer to the future in the conclusion of a scholarship essay. You can do this by discussing your future career goals in the nursing field, or by stating a specific aspiration which you hope to achieve during your nursing career.

Use proper grammar, spelling and punctuation. It is always important to use proper grammar, spelling and punctuation in writing a scholarship essay. Although the nursing profession may not require you to study grammar and spelling, it is essential that you avoid any simple errors in your essay. Ensuring that your essay is free of mistakes will make you look professional and leave a positive impression on the judges.

Write in response to the scholarship requirements and purpose. Be sure that your essay responds to the scholarship requirements. Some scholarships may require that you intend to practice in a certain field of nursing, that you work in a certain area, or that you attend a certain nursing program or school. Your essay should clearly identify how you meet these requirements.

Do as much research as you can about the scholarship program and the organization that is offering the scholarship. Organizations typically give away scholarships to promote certain interests or purposes. Make sure that you highlight the ways in which your career goals will fit with the scholarship program’s purpose.

Answer any questions thoroughly. If the scholarship program has requested that your essay address certain questions, make sure you answer these questions clearly and thoroughly. This is often an easy way to for judges to weed out applications that don’t fit the award criteria. Your essay must respond to any questions which are asked, or it is likely that it will not be given consideration.

Be original. Your essay will be among hundreds or even thousands of others, all from other nursing students who have the desire and ability to succeed in the nursing profession. If your essay does not stand out, it will be overlooked. To be original, you can either find a unique essay topic, or you can write about an ordinary topic and approach it in an original way. When you are trying to come up with original ideas for your essay, think about your own unique personality and experiences. What is it that made you decide to enter the field of nursing? What life experiences will you contribute to the nursing field? Spend some time thinking about what makes you unique as a nursing student and future nurse. This will help you to think of an original topic or approach.

Be cautious when recycling essays. In your scholarship application process, it is likely that you will be able to use parts and pieces of essays for more than one scholarship application. However, you should not merely write one or two general essays and send them out with every scholarship application. Remember, the judges who choose the scholarship winners are looking for an essay that is original and responds to the purpose and goals of the scholarship program. If you tailor each of your essays to the particular nursing scholarship you are applying for, you will have a much greater likelihood of success.

Get a second (or even third or fourth) opinion. After you have finished writing your essay, be sure to review it with at least one more person. You can ask your friends, family members, teachers, or professors to be your editors. When others review your essay, they can find errors and suggest possible improvements. You should review your essay with at least one other person, but it is even better if you can find three or more people to review your essay.

Follow these guidelines, and you will be able to write an original, professional and effective essay that gives you an edge over the competition.

Today’s consumers are upto their earphones in ever-evolving technology. Nearly everything theyneed to find, view, hear, and know is a click away. So traditional mail(that thing that’s delivered to their doors) must be passé, right?Actually, no.

In fact, recent studies by the U.S. Postal Service and a number ofindependent research groups found that consumers — even heavy Internetusers — continue to view mail as a highly relevant and significant partof their lives. It provides a physical and tangible quality consumersfind lacking in their electronic communications. But that’s not all. Thestudies also showed that mail, working side by side with digital media, can have a substantial impact on the use of commercial Web sites.

The following insights demonstrate the power of linking mail with your Internet communications.

TIPS FOR PICKING YOUR MAJOR

2. List what interests you 2-5 options

3. Obtain the list of courses that are offered per major

4. Highlight the courses within each major that interest you *read the course descriptions* go through them one by one to see what sounds interesting & make notes

5. Contact and/or introduce yourself to 2 professors, career development staff, program adviser/guidance counselor & students within the major you are interested in. Ask them for a phone conference or face to face meeting. Ask them for feedback about their discipline. A. What they like about it? B.What they don’t? C.Why do they teach this discipline?/ Or why did you pick this major? D. Where have their students’ gone or professional fields they have chosen with this major? E. What are some of the challenges with this major?

6. Go to the library and/or research online career options for people majoring in what you have selected as your choices?

7. Take an assessment (Jung Typology) *think about the results & talk to someone you think may be able to share further insight like a career counselor, parent, teacher)

8. Once you’ve narrowed down your search based on these things, contact the Career Office or your Guide Counselor or Admissions Counselor for more information

9. Go back to Academic Services or Career Development to share your information and be determined to make a decision.

10. Finally, know that no-matter what you choose that if you choose another career path in the end that is okay. For example: my boss in Finance was an English Major, an Accountant I met started in Marketing. It’s not the end all be all – so just step out on faith, but absolutely include your research, interviewing, and gut and go for it!

Colleges and private scholarship sponsors offer billions of dollars in financial aid. Even if you don’t have a high level of financial need, you may be eligible for these awards. Most colleges and many private scholarship sponsors require students to submit their *FAFSA to be considered for financial aid. Some school and private scholarship programs are specifically designed for students who were rejected for federal financial aid, so even if you don’t think you’ll qualify for federal aid, it’s a smart move to submit your FAFSA.

4. It’s Free

A completed *FAFSA will put you in consideration for federal, state, college and private scholarships and it’s completely free. The only thing you’ll spend completing your *FAFSA is a few minutes of your time, and you could get thousands of dollars of financial aid in return.

5. Getting Help is Easy and Free

Not only is submitting your *FAFSA free, but it may be easier to complete than you realize. Don’t know how to figure out your parents’ net worth? Don’t worry. When you complete your *FAFSA online help is built into the system, so you won’t get bogged down by the form’s confusing financial jargon. You can still submit your questions online at the *FAFSA Web site if you choose to fill out the paper form, or you can call the Federal Student Aid Information Center at 1-800-4-FED-AID (1-800-433-3243).

Many high schools and colleges offer help with *FAFSA Day, an event usually in February. If your school doesn’t host a *FAFSA Day, check with other schools in your area to see if you can attend their *FAFSA Day.

Federal, state and private financial aid can be within your reach when you submit your *FAFSA, so what are you waiting for? *FAFSA forms become available on or before January 1st each year. Submit your *FAFSA as soon after January 1st to have the best shot at financial aid.

Don’t just send in your *FAFSA and expect the money to start rolling in. Many financial aid programs require additional forms besides the *FAFSA, so check the requirements for state, school and private awards to make sure your application is complete. http://www.fafsa.ed.gov/

Marcus Mosiah Garvey, Jr., National Hero of Jamaica (17 August 1887 – 10 June 1940[1]) was a publisher, journalist, entrepreneur, Black Nationalist, Pan-Africanist, and orator. Marcus Garvey was founder of the Universal Negro Improvement Association and African Communities League (UNIA-ACL).[2] Prior to the twentieth century, leaders such as Prince Hall, Martin Delany, Edward Wilmot Blyden, and Henry Highland Garnet advocated the involvement of the African diaspora in African affairs. Garvey was unique in advancing a Pan-African philosophy to inspire a global mass movement focusing on Africa known as Garveyism.[2] Promoted by the UNIA as a movement of African Redemption, Garveyism would eventually inspire others, ranging from the Nation of Islam, to the Rastafari movement (which proclaims Garvey as a prophet). The intention of the movement was for those of African ancestry to "redeem" Africa and for the European colonial powers to leave it. His essential ideas about Africa were stated in an editorial in the Negro World titled “African Fundamentalism” where he wrote:

Our union must know no clime, boundary, or nationality… let us hold together under all climes and in every country…

10744052082?profile=originalRunning a company when you have children at home is more of an art than a science and it calls for a different approach from the norm. So if you feel that you are swimming against the flow in your day, here are a few tips for work-at-home moms to stay productive and profitable during summer breaks (or anytime).

  1. Summer Homework. Depending on the age of your child, the school they attend may have them to complete assignments in preparation for the upcoming school year. This is also a great way to refresh and reinforce concepts that they have already learned. Some children are eager to get assignments as soon as summer vacation begins but a better option is to give them one assignment to do each day.
  2. Supplement Assignments. You can add to homework by giving them fun lessons to do on their own. Have them create art, science, reading, or math projects to augment learning. Provide a reward for going the extra mile.
  3. Chores. Children complain less when they have something to keep them occupied. If your child is old enough to help out around the house then a few light assignments each day will keep their boredom blahs to a minimum. This also buys you some time during the day to get your business projects done.
  4. Office Help. In lieu of chores, older children can also assist you with running your home office. You could also use this time to help them develop their natural talents by assigning them to work that enhance their skill set.
  5. Swap childcare. Talk with a neighbor to see if they would like to exchange a few days with you. This especially comes in handy when you have projects that need to be done on time.
  6. Summer Reading. Many children love to read and most would not pass up an opportunity to hang out with their peers while doing it. Check your calendar and try to coordinate meetings or time sensitive projects when during the hours when children are away at camp.
  7. Alternative Summer Office Locations. When all is said and done you may simply find it is impossible to get anything done when the children are at home. In those cases a backup plan is the answer. Some places where you can pack up your lap top and plug away include the library, coffee shop, a business incubator, friend or relative’s home that works during the day, in a park, or by the lake.

A home office can be the best of both worlds for mompreneurs. By putting these easy to execute short-cuts in place you will create the lifestyle you love and have more time to create the profits you desire!

I was on twitter today and happened to see this tweet: @ClutchMagazine founder @dedej has a panel pitch for @SXSW called "The Elevation of Blk Women in New Media-Vote Now! http://bit.ly/abeE5L

I was introduced to SXSW this year. It is this MAJOR Music, film, and interactive conference and festival that all the techies go to for networking, scoping out the new new, etc. Well this year they had the 1st Black Blogging Rockstars Panel (watch video) with some of the top black bloggers and tech heads. Deanna, founder of ClutchMagazine and also listed on the BBWO50 Top Women Entrepreneurs on the Network, was a speaker on the Black Bloggers panel and for SXSW 2011 she is pitching a new panel discussion: The Elevation of Black Women in New Media, to focus on issues related to black women entrepreneurs and black women bloggers online.

I immediately clicked to read all about her idea and of course vote for this panel. I then sent Deanna a quick tweet showing my support and to my surprise she told me that she'd like to have me on the panel! Seeing it happen would be awesome, possible being a speaker, would be even better! But we'll see how things go if I officially get on the panel, for now I would just like you to find out more about her idea and vote for this discussion. Do that here: http://panelpicker.sxsw.com/ideas/view/5379.

The black blogging community has been talking about our issues not just as bloggers, but as entrepreneurs pushing to work amongst ourselves and gain credibility among mainstream advertisers and I think its high time we take this conversation to another level. On Black Web2.0 there as the post about African American mom bloggers finally getting their just due, myself and some wonderful mommy bloggers took part in the Magical Mocha Moms Mixer sponsored by Disney for Mommy Bloggers of Color, there was an article on BlogHer about African American Women Online seeking online networks and recently the Grio sparked discussion on the state of black women in the blogosphere.

Clearly folks are talking, its time for more of us to join the conversation. I hope you'll take a few minutes to vote for Deana's idea and if it all works out, perhaps more of us will be attending SXSW2011 and showcasing our contributions as the Black Social Media Community of today.

Go Vote and Read those other articles too! -LaShanda H.
