Starting a Business Blog

Business Blogging Tips for Beginners

Are you ready to start a business blog? The key to blogging is writing great content, being consistent, and focusing on your writing for your niche rather than dreams of being the next big blogger. Good bloggers with good content will find loyal readers, it’s just that simple. Blogs are easy to setup and easy to maintain. All you need to do is:
  1. Figure out what you want to blog about. Focus on a specific topic.
  2. Write several introductory posts that focus on: a. Who you are. b. Why you do what you do.
    c. Tips you can share related to your products or service.
    d. Known issues in your area of interest and how you fix and/or work around them.
    e. Experts or Headline News in your area of interest
    f. Commentary on the posts of other bloggers in your niche
  3. Select a blog site that works for you: a. Blogger b. Wordpress
    c. Typepad
  4. Take the time to get a nice, professional, premium theme for your blog template.
  5. Figure out what links or banner images you want to add to your blog, don’t go banner crazy. The focus of your blog should be your writing, not your affiliate links.
  6. Schedule your blog posts before hand; write several posts at one time and then schedule them to post throughout your desired timeframe.
  7. Go out there and introduce yourself to other bloggers. Leave comments on their pages and add your favorite bloggers to your blog roll.
  8. Share your blog and specific posts to others online. Repost your best blog posts on your favorite networks or include them in your newsletter. Add excerpts of your posts on social networking spaces, as promotional teasers and link builders.
  9. Post your blog posts on social bookmarking sites making the most of your tags to highlight keywords.

The Business of Looking Good: Addition Elle

Most of the time I am either all business talk or all mom talk, but today I wanted to say a little bit about fashion. After all we business women and busy moms have to look good and feel good before anything else in our lives can work! Well, today I have to say that I am loving the attention fashion labels and clothing lines are giving to women with Curvy Body Types. Two of my top finds: Addition Elle the new Online Shopping website for Plus Size Fashion and Vogue Italia's recent launch of Vogue Curvey, a site that celebrates chic voluptuous stylistas.

Finally, a pair of jeans made just for your curvy body type. Visit Penningtons' online store for denim in dark blue and black! And be sure to let me know what you get! I am on a mission to update my own wardrobe, (the time is quickly approaching for 2010 business expos and conferences), SO when I get my new digs I'll post them for you to see. And if you have your own Plus Size Clothing line or you know of one that you would like to share, please add a comment below.

7 E Book Mistakes

Why are some authors doing so much better than others? We've discovered seven key mistakes that most eBook authors make (and in doing so, hold themselves back from major success):

  1. They don't write to a specific, target audience.
The biggest mistake most eBook authors make is they don't clearly define, identify and visualize who they are selling their eBook to. On the Web, to be successful, you must write to a specific group of people who have specific interests. Make sure that you know exactly who is going to buy your eBook, and where you can find them online.

  2. They don't automate as many of their business activities as possible.
Selling eBooks, though it is highly profitable, is not a business where you make hundreds of dollars per sale.

Automate everything you can - credit card processing, eBook delivery, as much technical support as possible to keep your eBook publishing and sales costs to a minimum. If you can't automate a function, delegate it to someone else.

  3. They don't have a compelling title for their eBook.
When selecting eBook titles, use words that convey the benefit of what's in the eBook, as well as words your audience is familiar with.

A bad title for an eBook: "Online Marketing for Newbies." A good title for the same eBook: "97 Ways to Promote Your Website - No Experience Required."

  4. They try to cover too much ground.
Many eBook authors convey a lot of information but don't cover anything in-depth. As a result, they never fully explain anything in enough detail to provide any useful value to their readers. This is a very bad mistake to make, especially when it comes to how-to eBooks, which happen to be the best type to write.

  5. They are not proactive in marketing their eBooks.
It would be nice if marketing for your eBook simply happened on its own - but it doesn't. You have to do it yourself. After you've published your eBook and promoted it to the people on your own mailing list (if you have one), then you have to contact other website owners and persuade them to be your affiliates. You should do this continually.

  6. They don't differentiate their eBook from its competitors.
When you choose a topic for your eBook, even if there are a hundred other eBooks out there on same general subject, choose an angle for yours that will make it easy for yours to be distinguished from the others.

For example, right now job-hunting eBooks are very popular. There are dozens that are big sellers. "Secrets of Breaking Into Pharmaceutical Sales" has a very specific title that sets it apart from the competition, and is aimed at a clearly identified target audience. Incidentally, it's selling very well itself.

  7. They write and publish eBooks that nobody will pay for.
Many eBook authors write about information that either people can get for free, or that people are not actually interested in enough to pay for the information.

Before you invest weeks or months into the writing and publishing of your eBook, invest a little time investigating whether other eBooks published in the same subject area are selling on the Web.

So, there you have it - the seven big mistakes to avoid when writing and publishing eBooks. Remember, the opportunities are plentiful - and huge - right now for anyone who wants to become a best-selling eBook author. Simply use common sense, follow our advice, and let your literary career flourish!

A Conversation with T. Nicole

Interviewd by Business Support by Mittie

February 26th 2010

Q: So first of all T. Nicole, I would like to say thank you for doing this interview with your scheduling being as hectic as it is with the release of the new book, "My Own Terms II: Never Settle. Tell us about the book, and what inspired you to write the sequel to "My Own Terms" so quickly?

A: My Own Terms 2: Never Settle picks up where My Own Terms let off. This book duo follows the life of a woman that is fed up with dealing with the controlling antics of her husband. After numerous events, she decides it's time for a change. Inspiration for these two books came from several life experiences of myself, friends, and family.

Q: The main character Shana seems so real! Is she a combination of women you know? Or is she based on one person in particular that you know or have met?

A: Shana is definitely a combination of myself and several of my friends. She is no doubt a handful....

Q: Tell us about the main character, Shana. Has her character grown and evolved or does she have the same attitude as she did in "My Own Terms"?

A: Shana does show growth in the sequel to My Own Terms. She learns to deal with situations differently, which in turn give her different results.

Q: Did anyone you know personally, inspire you to write?

A: I can't necessarily say that one person inspired me, rather a few people inspired me to follow my dreams.

Q: Do you feel as if the sequel to My Own Term helped you grow as a writer? If so, in what ways?

A: It definitely has and those who got to read a little of it have told me the same. It gave me more displicine and my characters were more developed.

Q: So the book was released today, are you getting the response that you expected?

A: I am so happy that I am getting the response that I hoped for. People are getting their copies and I am just so happy.

Q: So what's in the future for T. Nicole, what cities would you like to visit this time around that you didn't hit when the first book was released?

A: I will want to get up to New England, down South, and out West. I have to put some frequent flyer miles to work.

Q: Now that you have "My Own Terms" and My Own Terms II: Never Settle" officially released, what's next? Do you have any more project in the works?

A: I have one more title coming out this year which I am especially excited about. In addition to that, I am working on a non-fiction title.

Q: Is there anything you want your fans to know about you?
A: I want my fans to know that I do what I do for them.

Q: Where can both books be purchased?

A: Both books can be found on my website www.tnicoleonline.com as well as on Amazon.com.

T. Nicole

Maplewood, NJ February 2010-On Tuesday February 9, 2010 Ms. Boss Academy whichis a collaboration between Ms. Boss International and My SistahzKeeper held a small ceremony for Zoey Wiggins who was the first personto graduate from the pilot entrepreneurship program. Zoey attends MySistahz Keeper in Jersey
City, New Jersey through the AWEP/CWEP program for women who are onpublic assistance. There were 13other women who also attended the program and who were enrolled in Ms.Boss Academy, but only Zoeycompleted the 8 week business start-up program. Thewomen who are also on public assistance dropped out of theentrepreneurship program for a variety of reasons. The program walkedZoey through the basics of starting a business right up to creating apresence on the Internet bysetting up a website.

By some standards some may view the entrepreneurship program as a failure because only oneperson graduated, but to Audrey Bell-Kearney who is the CEO of Ms. Boss International andthe creator of the Ms. Boss Academy program she views that one graduateas a success. She states that you have to understand the population thatyou are working with. The goal here is tohelp these women learn how to become self-sufficient so that publicassistance is no longer needed. By helping one person learn how to startand run their own business successfully, this will open updoors of employment for others. Small businesses fuel the economy andright not that economy needs some fuel with thenational unemployment rate around 10%. Kiwan Fitch who is the ExecutiveDirector of My Sistahz Keeper has gone a step further by turning one ofthe office spaces inside the My SistahzKeepers headquarters into a small business incubator for the graduatesof Ms.Boss Academy. Kiwan who is one of the co-founders of My Sistahz Keeper anon-profit organization understandsthat small businesses need to be nurtured so that they can grow. This iswhyshe has opened up another door for these women offering them the spaceso that they can stay connectedto positive people who have goals and dreams that they want to see cometrue. To keep the graduates connected there will be ongoing mentoringfrom Audrey and also from Stephanie Wilson who is theProgram Director at My Sistahz Keeper. Zoey who has only been anentrepreneur for about two months already understandfrom going through the Ms. Boss Academy program how important mentorsare that is why she has stepped up to be amentor with GEN (Gurls Empowerment Network) another program offered byMySistazh Keeper for teenage girls.

The next Ms. Boss Academy is scheduled to start on March 2, 2010. Audrey who created thecurriculum andfacilitates the program hopes that more women take advantage of theprogram this time, but if they don’t as long as we can graduate at leastone the program is still a success.

To find out more aboutthe Ms. Boss Academy contact Audrey at 888-229-1238 or email her at Audrey@msboss.net. 1. Print your best small ad on a postcard and mail it to prospects in your targeted market.
People read postcards when the message is brief. A small ad on a postcard can drive a high volume of traffic to your web site and generate a flood of sales leads for a very small cost.

  2. No single marketing effort works all the time for every business, so rotate several marketing tactics and vary your approach.
Your customers tune out after awhile if you toot only one note. Not only that, YOU get bored. Marketing can be fun, so take advantage of the thousands of opportunities available for communicating your value to customers. But don't be arbitrary about your selection of a variety of marketing ploys. Plan carefully. Get feedback from customers and adapt your efforts accordingly.

  3. Use buddy marketing to promote your business.
For example, if you send out brochures, you could include a leaflet and/or business card of another business, which had agreed to do the same for you. This gives you the chance to reach a whole new pool of potential customers.

  4. Answer Your Phone Differently.
Try announcing a special offer when you answer the phone. For example you could say, "Good morning, this is Ann Marie with Check It Out; ask me about my special marketing offer." The caller is compelled to ask about the offer. Sure, many companies have recorded messages that play when you're tied up in a queue, but who do you know that has a live message? I certainly haven't heard of anyone. Make sure your offer is aggressive and increase your caller's urgency by including a not-so-distant expiration date.

  5. Stick It!
Use stickers, stamps and handwritten notes on all of your direct mail efforts and day-to-day business mail. Remember, when you put a sticker or handwritten message on the outside of an envelope, it has the impact of a miniature billboard. People read it first; however, the message should be short and concise so it can be read in less than 10 seconds.

  6. Send A Second Offer To Your Customers Immediately After They've Purchased
Your customer just purchased a sweater from your clothing shop. Send a handwritten note to your customer thanking them for their business and informing them that upon their return with "this note" they may take advantage of a private offer, such as 20% off their next purchase. To create urgency, remember to include an expiration date.

  7. Newsletters
Did you know it costs six times more to make a sale to a new customer than to an existing one? You can use newsletters to focus your marketing on past customers. Keep costs down by sacrificing frequency and high production values. If printed newsletters are too expensive, consider an e-mail newsletter sent to people who subscribe at your Web site.

  8. Seminars/ open house
Hosting an event is a great way to gain face time with key customers and prospects as well as get your company name circulating. With the right programming, you'll be rewarded with a nice turnout and media coverage. If it's a seminar, limit the attendance and charge a fee. A fee gives the impression of value. Free often connotes, whether intended or not, that attendees will have to endure a sales pitch.

  9. Bartering
This is an excellent tool to promote your business and get others to use your product and services. You can trade your product for advertising space or for another company's product or service. This is especially helpful when two companies on limited budgets can exchange their services.

  10. Mail Outs
Enclose your brochure, ad, flyer etc. in all your outgoing mail. It doesn't cost any additional postage and you'll be surprised at who could use what you're offering.
