It's All About the Brushes

It's All About the BrushesWhen it comes to applying makeup like a professional, using the right tools can make all the difference. High-quality brushes can help you achieve a smooth, even look. Here are a few makeup artist tips and techniques you can use every day to get a polished look. It’s all a matter of using the right brush to get beautiful results.A Powder Brush is a full, fluffy brush designed to evenly distribute powder to the face. Sweep brush across pressed powder or dip into loose powder; tap gently to remove excess and apply to the face from forehead to chin using long, light strokes.A Cheek Brush is used to accentuate bone structure or add a healthy blush to cheeks. Use the tip of this soft, angled brush to apply color to the apples of the cheeks and stroke upward along cheekbones, stopping just below the temples, then blend. This brush is also a great tool to use for applying bronzer. Apply across the bridge of your nose, temples, cheekbones and shoulders for a gorgeous, healthy looking glow.An Eye Definer Brush has bristles that are tapered and rounded at the end to shape and define eyes and blend color evenly. Sweep color softly across the eyelid and then lightly above the crease for a natural, yet polished look.An Eye Crease Brush has long, thin, pointed bristles and is used with midtone and darker shades of eye color to add depth to eyes. Begin by placing the brush at the outer corner of the eye and then sweep inward following the natural crease. This brush can also be used to create a smoky eye look. Using the brush tip, sweep softly along lower lashes from the outer corner inward. An Eyeliner Brush is used to line eyes and enhance sparse brows with eye color. This flat, angled, short-bristle brush makes it easy to apply a thin line of color along top and bottom lashes. It's also a great tool to use for blending your eyebrow pencil.Use an Eyebrow Brush to brush brows in the opposite direction from which they grow to remove any excess foundation. Gently brush back, following their natural shape and direction, as a finishing touch to your makeup application

Fired @ 54, not supervisable!

I went after a job in a place where I believed I could make a difference providing a service to Black people, my people that I feel most connected to. The revolutionary side of me is passionate about affecting social change and making a difference. All fired up after finally completing my undergraduate degree I was idealistic and proudly anticipating working at a Historically Black College. My intent was to connect with African American parents and students to assist them in securing funding through Financial Aid effectively as someone who understood the anxiety they may have been experiencing. My belief is that I understood the challenge of feeling intimidated and overwhelmed but together we could come up with a plan that worked to the advantage of the student and parent and secured their admission, tuition, and housing requirements. The work proved to be more than challenging and even though I anticipated it to be difficult I expected to be trained well enough to meet the challenge. A very wise woman that had been in the industry for almost 30 years taught me as much as she could in between the demands of her own student load and time lines. The office operations were flat and loosely structured and the environment was highly charged by politics and big egos. When I needed help I would go to my co-workers and make every effort to get the right answer for the best outcome. In almost every instance, I received a different answer no matter who I went to. Seasoned individuals performed procedures the way it has always been done like before computers became the focus. It was effective in its time although time consuming. Fairly new professionals performed procedures in whatever way allowed it be done the fastest. Mistakes were made but time lines were met most of the time.Read moreOmitunde, Publisher of African American Family ConnectionAn online magazine about African American Family values and community.Visit AAFC for the latest issue each month and a copy of "The Ripple Effect".

A Sigh of Relief!!!

At the beginning of the night when the numbers weren't going the way I wanted them to, I was feeling a sense of sadness not just for me but for our country. I was just praying that race wouldn't cloud the thinking process of the voters and the most qualified candidate would prevail by the end of the night.I stayed glue to www.7online.com throughout the evening keeping a watchful eye on the changing numbers while cautiously clinging to hope that America was going to show the world that we are truly ready for the change needed to bring us back from the brink of destruction. I knew deep within my heart that we couldn't afford another 4 years of the failed politics that the past 8 years has rained upon us.As the numbers began moving in favor of positive change for this country, I was still sitting in utter disbelief because I was trying to grasp the enormous possibility of what was about to take place within my lifetime. At around 11:00pm I heard the newscaster say the words, "Channel 7 is Ready to Project that Barack Obama is the Winner of this Presidential Race!" I sat there not believing what I just heard, but when John McClain came on the air waves approximately 15 minutes later to graciously concede the race to Obama, that is when I was finally able to breathe a sign of relief and finally realized that yes, America has spoken loud and clear that we are ready for a change and that change was in the form of a eloquent, intelligent, well-spoken African-American male.I don't know about anyone else, but I heard the loud roar of my hard fighting dead ancestors who clearly paved the way for this day, many with a premature harsh death as they joyously celebrated in their final resting places. As I watched the large joyous crowds composed of all nationalities and races around the country, I remembered the words of Martin Luther King predicting that with all of our struggles and hardships, we would be reaching that Promised Land. Now it is time for us to unite as a people and work together to bring America back to what our forefathers wanted this country to be. We have elected the right leader poised to take over the reins come January 20, 2009, but he will need all of our help.God truly blessed America, Tuesday, November 4th, 2008!!! Let's rejoice in this blessing and roll up our sleeves and begin the healing process.Arlene

The Day After...

Yesterday, the day after the November 2008 election, I was driving and praying about everything that has happened in our country up to this point, for the future of our country, and for President Obama and his family. The fact is he has a lot riding on his shoulders. Not only is the whole country watching, but minorities as a whole are looking to him for fairness across the board and unity among us all. That to me means that he needs a lot of prayer and covering by the most high God. To whom much is given, much is required! The fact is, if God allowed him to be placed in this position, he better be sure to look to Him and give Him the glory for bringing Him this far. It is by HIS grace that WE all have made it this far. And we STILL need His grace and mercy every day.And I cried. I cried for my anscestors. I did not vote the way I did for the face but for the content of his character and that is how I hope we all voted. He ran a decent campaign without all of the trickery and schemes... He stuck to the issues and that was important to me.I hope you all take a deep breath today and from this point forward and pray earnestly for what is to come. He and his family will need that.I received the following text message... Something for all of us, no matter what race, to think about...We lived to see a historical event last evening. As we think about this, let's not forget those before us - Denise McNair, Cynthia Wesley, Carole Roberts, and Addie Mae Collins, Freedom Riders, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., Rosa Parks, Harriet Tubman, Sojourner Truth, Emmett Till, Medger Evers, those killed in Rosewood, FL, the students that started the sit in at a lunch counter, civil rights workers, the men of Tuskegee Experiment. All of these and MANY MORE courageous African American trailblazers contributed to the history made last evening. Don't settle for mediocrity. Now is the time to ACT.What trail will you blaze?Be blessed!Shellye aka ParadiseVisit National Business Women Enterprise Network at http://nbwenorg.ning.com

If Michelle Obama Carried A Bag!

Okay... It's been a while since I last blogged, but I found no better time than now to write! Can you believe that we have a new first lady who looks like us? Wow! How hot is that?! Well... as I watched as our new first family hit the stage the night of the elections, my mind began to wonder. I imagined a Chef somewhere in the United States of America wondering what would be their first meal as First Family in the White House. I imagined a home interior designer wondering what would be the first room Michelle will redecorate and how would she do it. I also imagined all mothers wondering what her methods of disapline are. Well me... I must be honest, I wondered what her handbag stash looks like! One things for sure, because she's a very intelligent woman, and it's been said that she believes in a good bargain, I don't plan on seeing First Lady Obama rockin' the latest Prada or Fendi bag any time soon. I definately know she won't be rockin' knock offs! She's just to classy for that!I can imagine First Lady Obama carrying very functionable bags with multi-compartments for bandaids, tissues, cellphone, and folders. But more importantly, it must be durible enough to carry her top secret, legal document filled laptop.I have decided through my daydream, that from this day forward, I will treat every customer as if she were Michelle Obama! I will demand that every customer is completely satisfied and pleased with our service.Take a moment and ask yourself... If Michelle Obama was to evaluate your business based upon your quality of product and/or service would she do business with you. If your answer is no... maybe you should join me in treating every client from this day forth as if they were Michelle Obama! It's time for change!Nicci

Yes!

Yes We Did!!!!I am so full today, I am so proud. History has been made, and I was able to witness it. I cried so hard and praised the Lord so much. I cried for my grandmother and grandfather who were sharecroppers. I cried for those who fought long and hard so that this day could become a reality. I cried for our youth who can now see and truly believe that they can do and be anything that they work hard for. I cried for our ancestors who were stolen out of Africa and brought to this land. I cried for the seperation, and the pain they endured. I cried for my children and the great things that is to come into their life. I cried for America, because we can truly be one nation under God. I cried because now the real hard work begins. I cried because I am so happy! All I can say now is YES WE DID!!!!!Stay Blessed,Daphne Porter

NAACP - President Barack Obama

Yesterday was a glorious day. Yesterday, 99 years of struggle by the members and supporters of the NAACP came to a head in a single glorious moment when the electorate surged and broke the color line that has guarded the White House since the day it was built… by slaves.Yesterday children with foreign-sounding names learned that they too can be President of the United States, and the electoral aspiration of almost an entire generation of young American voters was realized. On this historic day, we congratulate the President-Elect, and we honor the memory of freedom fighters like Dr. Martin Luther King, Ida B. Wells, Medgar Evers, Rosa Parks, and so many others who gave their lives so that America might truly become the land of opportunity for all people. Their sacrifice made this day possible.Full electoral participation has always been a driving goal of the NAACP, and NAACP leaders around the country rose to the challenge. In North Carolina, thanks to the work of committed NAACPers, voters were spared intimidating specters like the casket bearing a candidate's name that someone placed in front of a polling place in Craven County a few days earlier…In California, local NAACP members went into local jails to ensure that every eligible voter was registered…In Mississippi and Maine, the fieldwork of NAACP leaders meant that the number of voters surged even though they received relatively little attention from national campaigns…In places like Florida and Ohio, thanks to NAACPers who pushed for voting reforms after the debacles of 2000 and 2004, the election ran much more smoothly…In Alabama and Georgia, NAACP leaders led the charge to restore voting rights to thousands of former felons…And in states like Indiana and Pennsylvania, NAACP lawsuits to protect voters paid off big time.Because of the work of committed NAACP supporters like you, across the country we saw precincts with 95% voter registration rates, volunteers processed tens of thousands of calls to the 866-OUR-VOTE Election Protection hotline, and get out the vote efforts across the country targeted every single eligible voter.Yes, yesterday was great day. But, it's only a glimmer of how bright our future can be when we work together.Sincerely,Benjamin JealousPresident & CEO

The Momentum Can't Stop Now...

We have progressed so much within our own community in preparation for the embracing of a larger community, the excitement, unity demonstrated during this past year has been nothing but sheer enlightment, and it can't stop now.How are we really going to support each each other whether it be business or personal. We are on the verge of making history over and over, if we just remember one thing..it is bigger than just I...Will we continue to focus only on those who have made it, or we will really make it a priority to commit in reaching out to the least of them who possess something out of the ordinary, because frankly everyone who steps out...don't do it just on their own understanding...the seed was planted, just need to be watered (guidance) every now and then...and freely if possible...because those kinds of seeds bring forth greater wealth...in all areas...Let's keep this momentum going...these are exciting times...and their are more to come...

Thurgood Marshall, a true Revolutionary

I consider myself a revolutionary and have great respect for the individuals who paved the way for the freedoms we enjoy and sometimes take for granted today.During the 1950’s when I was born, the battle against segregation and discrimination was being waged in the court system all the up way to the Supreme Court. In many ways the tone and climate of the times influenced me to be a fighter for social justice and throughout my life I have always fought for the oppressed and those less fortunate. Mainly my causes have always been for women and children. Injustice is a serious issue for me and as a high school student I was involved in many protest for equal rights. The United States Supreme Court is the highest court in the land where all cases and controversies come under review when it is a violation of the right to be protected under the Constitution of the United States. The Supreme Court is the custodial protector and voice of the Constitution with the authority to change legislation or presidential orders by ruling on a constitutional issue and creating a constitutional amendment or a new ruling.Supreme Court Justice Thurgood Marshall grew up in Baltimore and throughout his career fought for revolutionary causes that contributed significantly to the struggle for the civil rights of African Americans. Born on July 2, 1908, the grandson of a slave, he became the first African-American appointed to serve as an associate justice of the United States Supreme Court.Read moreOmitunde, Publisher of African American Family ConnectionAn online magazine about African American Family values and community.Visit AAFC for the latest issue each month and a copy of "The Ripple Effect".
