Motivational quotes to inspire you!

"As you begin to take action toward the fulfillment of your goals and dreams, you must realize that not every action will be perfect. Not every action will produce the desired result. Not every action will work. Making mistakes, getting it almost right, and experimenting to... see what happens are all part of the process of eventually getting it right."

New Pattern: Megastar Crochet Blanket

A new crochet blanket pattern from This Is Crochet by TurquoizBlue

T U R Q U O I Z B L U E :
A few years ago, I was exploring how to create different star and pinwheel shapes using Tunisian Crochet. One of the first motifs I came up with was a five-pointed star shape, which I went on to use in my Seaside Throw Afghan which was published in the Interweave Crochet Summer 2009 issue. The six-pointed star was one of the next incarnations of the star motif. I enlarged the small motif into a large star, and sketching and playing with color options brought about the stripes and burst of color from the center of the star.

Create Your Online Branding Strategy in 5 Easy Steps

As a small business owner building your brand online is essential in this new economy. A few weeks ago I attended a webinar presented by Coach Tanya, of BePromotable.com, a branding consulting company in Dallas, Texas.

In the webinar, Coach Tanya detailed these five steps to online branding. Follow these five online branding tips and you’ll be on your way to creating a solid brand for your small business.

leader.JPG
  1. Develop a Visibility Strategy. Be seen and be heard. It used to said that– “it’s who you know”, but in this new economy, it’s “who knows you” that matters. To accomplish this strategy, create a blog for your business, use social media such as Twitter and Facebook but don’t forget about affinity groups like LinkedIn and Ning. Create a profile and get active on these sites.
  2. Be Known for Something. Become a thought leader. Define your strengths. What comes natural to you? What are you good at? What makes you think “I can’t wait to do that again?” Determine whatever it is and become a known leader in that area.
  3. Decide Your Style. Just because everyone else is doing it doesn’t mean it’s right for you. When it comes to marketing your business online, there are so many ways to do this. There’s social media, article-writing, press releases, blogs, etc. and so on. Don’t try to do it all. Test them out, then decide what’s right for you and go with that.
  4. Manage Your Time. Outsource what you don’t have time to do yourself. A tool like HootSuite is a real time-saver when it comes to posting to your social media accounts. Another way to save time is to hire a virtual assistant or outsource company to handle administrative or marketing tasks you don’t have time to do yourself.
  5. Monitor Your Brand. You can measure how well your brand ranks online by using sites like Klout.com and OnlineCalculator.com. These sites will let you know how strong your online brand is currently and give you some tips to leverage your online clout.

Tip of the week

Start loving yourself the way that you want others to love you. People will only treat you how they are trained to treat you. So if you expect a man to love you unconditionally start doing it yourself.

I see too many women complain about people are not loving them or treating them a certain way. However, the way that other people treat you is the same way that you treat yourself. (Law of reflection)

Start speaking to yourself with love.

Say positive affirmations.

Take care of your body, mind, and spirit.

Thank you Lord. Got Life! Sunday Inspiration

This is a power-point that I wrote in 2004, however, I thought that it was
worth a read. I left everything in place.

When observing the activities surrounding the hurricanes, flooding and tornadoes here lately, I find it quite difficult to complain aboutthe showers or windy weather we are experiencing here in Seattle. Tothink that I would even complain about rain of any sort in Seattle(it’s known for rain). Wait a minute! Let me explain, Seattle has beenshowing out this summer with little to no rain for the last couple ofmonths. We expected rain off and on and a mild summer, however, we havehad some rather warm summer days and evenings here and you can get usedto it. Especially coming from Sacramento, my body thinks we still havea few more months of sunshine left.

Life in general can be that way. You can become so accustomed to having the luxuries (that few in our third world can experience )thatour reaction to being denied for a moment sends us into a process ofwithdrawal.

Have you seen the commercials “got milk?” It shows the individual very disappointed after eating a nice moist chocolate cupcake or otheritem ending up in a bit of a shock and dissatisfaction when they cometo the realization that there is no milk. How about the child that hasto eat cereal with water, “got milk?” No, but I’m sure they aregrateful for the bowl of cereal and water because it was only yesterdaythat they thought they would barely have water.

You may not have milk with that moist chocolate cupcake and the weather may be a bit too cold or windy, or just maybe you had to eatmeatloaf just one time too many this month. I would ask you tore-evaluate, take inventory of your blessings and answer this veryshort but critical question… “got life?”

When you feel an urge to complain just look up and say Thank you Lord, got life!

In everything give thanks for this is the will of God concerning you. I Thessalonians 5:18

Description:

After accepting her Dutch boyfriend’s invitation to move from sultry New Orleans, Carolyn finds herself in the land of windmills, wooden shoes and endless gray skies.

As she moves away from the remnants of her tragic childhood and America’s obsession with race, she is plunged into the depths of homesickness, depression and a declaration of war on her own hair.

She travels through motherhood and a career change, and her determination is put to the test. On the way to self-discovery, she ends up finding love, soul sisters and the secret to avoiding bad hair days.

In this mid-life memoir, Carolyn writes candidly about how getting the runaround in Spain, being mistaken for a prostitute and losing her passport in Cuba, and dealing with Dutch people on their bikes (among other quirky adventures) have changed her ideas about being a black woman in the
world.

Are you at work at home workaholic?

Thing 1: Can you tell I am getting chunky in the face! Now that I don't live in NY... too much driving, not enough walking! Lord knows my head is big enough, I don't need any more chunk to make it look bigger (lol). Alright, let me stop being silly ... do you see the earrings I am wearing in the picture above, purchased from Randall V Designs? Debra, the creator of this beautiful line, is giving away 5 pairs of earrings right now! If you want to grab a pair, enter the giveaway. Thing 2: I was watching one of the latest episodes of The Office and in one scene everyone is trying to figure out if there is anything Stanley actually notices. If you watch the show, Stanley is one of those characters who hates his 9-to-5 but keeps going so he can make it to his retirement plan. Anyhoo, through out the day his coworkers do ALL this crazy stuff to get his attention and NOTHING ... its like he is completely unaware of his surroundings and then all of a sudden he jumps up, looks at his watch, looks at the office clock and goes, 'Oh know, that clock his slow, its 5 o' clock. Time to go home!" At that point I'm busting a gutt, because he clearly ignores everything at work except the minute its time to go home. When you work at home of course, there is no watching the clock. Further more, there is no getting paid for not working! As nice as it is to wake up when I want, that perk also comes with working for as long as it takes to get the job done. Short of the dinner bell ringing, its so easy and sometimes necessary to work 60+ hours a week. This is especially true when clients send emails at all hours of the night and day often expecting a response asap, which makes it so easy to feel compelled to glue yourself to your laptop or phone BUT trust me when I say, you have to fight that feeling. At one point last year I was working myself so hard I didn't realize my body was giving out on me until I pretty much lost my voice and couldn't move my neck. At that point I realized if my body gives out, I can't do anything, so something had to give. Right now, I'm writing this while on a mini-vacation with the family in Willamsburg Virginia. I've barely posted anything on SistaSense OR the BlackParenting blog all week and I am SO overdue for my next Blogalicious post BUT this past week its really been about stepping back, doing behind the scenes work, and getting ready for my sons birthday. I just wanted to drop you a quick line, letting you know why I've been gone for a few days and why you sometimes have to go away for awhile too. Until I get back to writing new stuff, remember to read my story, download my holiday guide, and checkout the latest discussions on BBWO. OH ... ONE MORE THING ... remember the earrings I am wearing in the picture above were purchased from Randall V Designs. Debra, the creator of this beautiful line, is giving away 5 pairs of earrings right now! If you want to grab a pair, enter the giveaway.

Excerpt from an article written by Diane Helbig

"AsI was working with a client to develop her social media strategy, she mentioned that she has realized that relationship building is really a business practice. This is someone who was under the misconception that networking is about gathering business cards. She didn’t realize that networking is really about building and maintaining relationships with other business people. As we got her more involved with LinkedIn, she started reconnecting with people she had lost contact with over time–and she was really enjoying the rediscovery. She started to understand the real value that relationships play in business.

That got me thinking about what works and what doesn’t when it comes to networking and building relationships.

Therestill seem to be some misunderstandings about networking. Based on some of the behavior I’ve seen, it appears that many people are still missing the whole idea of relationship building. It doesn’t matter
whether it is social networking or in-person networking. In the business practice of building relationships, there are three deadly sins to avoid:

1. Pitching early
2. Signing someone up without permission
3. Assuming closeness

1. Pitching early:

Thisis when you meet someone at a networking event, exchange cards, and decide that the card exchange gives you permission to give them a sales pitch. This happens all the time. It’s one of the reasons that some people avoid networking events. They either think they are supposed to behave this way and aren’t comfortable in that role, or they dislike the people who do it and don’t want to be around them.

People whopitch early don’t understand the relationship building aspect of networking. They believe that simply participating in the activity is a license to sell. Well, it isn’t. Networking is the opportunity to begin
the relationship building process. Networking gives you the chance to meet people whom you might not otherwise meet.

I submit that thesame is true for “social networking.” Linking in or friending someone online does not mean you have an open invitation to sell to them. Here’s an example of a double whammy – I met a young man at a chamber event. Within a couple of days he sent me a LinkedIn request to connect. I accepted. Now I receive solicitations from him via LinkedIn.

Theproblem? I don’t know him, so I can’t trust him. He doesn’t know what my situation is or what my needs are. He isn’t matching a solution to a problem. He is solely focused on what he wants. If, on the other hand, he had continued the process of relationship building, he would have learned more about me and my situation. He would have waited to sell until he knew there was a need and until he had established trust. As it stands, I’m not even interested in seeing him at the next chamber function. He accomplished the exact opposite of what he wanted–all because he pitched too early.

2. Signing someone up withoutpermission: As far as I’m concerned, this is one of the deadliest networking sins. It is presumptuous and rude. I believe that when you do this you are telegraphing that you are more interested in building your list than in building relationships. How do you know the person needs
what you have to offer? How do you know they want to read what you have to say? Where did you get permission to enter their e-mail inbox on a consistent basis? Remember, the simple exchange of business cards is not a license to behave in any way you choose.

The solution is sovery simple. When you meet someone and engage in a conversation, you will learn things about them. If you discover that they have an interest in or need for the information you provide, ask them if they’d like to be added to your e-mail list and tell them why you think it would be a good idea for them. If they say “yes,” jot a note to yourself on their card. If they say “no,” don’t do it!

Did you notice the steps? They go in order. To take them out of order is to ask for trouble.

3.Assuming closeness: The story I told above about the young man I met at the chamber event also falls under this category. He assumed that we were closer than we were. He assumed that we had a relationship because of our chamber and online connections.

Think about therelationships you have with your friends, significant other, co-workers. Did they happen instantly? At “hello”? They didn’t, did they? They had to be built and nurtured; they had to grow over time.

This is notto say they you didn’t feel some sort of connection with some of these people. That sense of connection is what propels you to want to get to know them better. However, until you know someone better, you really don’t know enough to explore the possibility of conducting business with
each other.

Nothing sends people running from you quicker thanassuming closeness that doesn’t exist. Not only does it send people running, but they will tell others what you did. If you want to destroy your reputation quickly, then by all means, assume closeness. If, on the other hand, you want to grow your business, don’t make assumptions. Rather, grow those relationships first.

Ask yourself: Are you inbusiness for the long haul or for a quick hit? If you answered “for the long haul,” then relationship building is a necessity. Do yourself and your business a favor and take the time to build relationships with the people you meet. Most of these people will become great referral partners for you – not customers. The more referral partners you have, the easier it will be to grow your business. Those people you’ve built relationships with will be the best promoters of you and your business.

Do not Falter

Today was a faltering kind of day for me. A bit of self doubt because I was thinking about all the things I have to do to get my business started. I feel better now, because I have the support of my family. It's amazing what a few words of encouragement can get you through.

I know it's not going to be easy, but I've come a very long way from when I started. There will always be obstacles along the way, but it is the way you deal with and learn from them that matter.

I love this post about not giving up before you get to the finish line http://essentialu.typepad.com/my_weblog/2010/10/cosmetic-business.html written by Kayla of Essential wholesale. I read it a few days ago, and needless to say, it was very timely because I needed to read it again today.

So up I get, to keep moving and get this business going. I am very blessed, that I have a dream and the ability to make it happen. So, why wouldn't I?
