Intimate Conversation with author Rachel Berry

Author Rachel Berry grew up in Newark, East Orange, and Orange, NJ. She is a wife, proud mother of four adults, grandmother of two gorgeous girls, a published author and poet, motivational speaker, radio talk show host, columnist for SORMAG and community leader. As founder and president of a social group, this artist juggles a full schedule. "Black Pearls United INC" (an African American sister-circle) was founded in 2000.

Rachel is an alumni of Toastmasters International where she served as Sergeant at Arms, earned her CTM and Toastmaster of The Year award. Rachel’s book ‘Family Pictures’ made the EDC Creations 2009 best books list and she is an AFLA 2010 nominee. Mrs. Berry's speaking engagements include ILMW (The International League Of Muslim Women), Hampton Social Services, Heritage Elementary School, Healthy Family Partnership, The Red Hat Society, Norfolk Methodist Church, Sixth House and Everest College to name a few.

Rachel puts family first and enjoys life in Virginia. When she's not writing, she also enjoys reading, dining out, traveling, and watching movies. She accredits her gain in blessings and achievements to her relationship and guidance from her creator, association with great women, positive family members, loyal friends, the upbringing of an amazing woman-her mother, and the support and love of her husband and children.

BPM: Rachel, introduce us to your book, A Slip In The Right Direction, and the main characters.
RB: A Slip In The Right Direction – The Clifton Henderson series is a coming-of-age book written especially for tween and teen boys. The story takes place in Chicago and speaks to you through the eyes of 14 year-old Clifton Henderson aka Slip. Slip isn’t happy about his recent move, or having to start all over in a new school, and make new friends.

Also, a crush on a schoolmate who in the beginning doesn’t notice him, the yearning for his father’s approval as a young man, sibling rivalry, the gift of premonition, and a certain mysterious neighbor, all add color to his daily life. However, things really heat up for this young man when he’s kidnapped by gang members and his home training and family values are tested. Slip’s parents are Evelyn and Morris Henderson, and they too find themselves dealing with a few familiar challenges of their own as a couple, parents, dealing with career changes, and personal struggles.

l_70a6af141d8b41e1a4591c6009a27d29.jpg

BPM: What specific situation or revelation prompted you to write your book?
RB: I wrote this book because I want young men to have more available to read than just sports, comics, and SCI FI. I want young men to read and rise above the stigma that they don’t. I want our young boys to have someone to relate to that’s going through some of the things they’re experiencing and to know good guys have a life too and it’s alright to have values and principles. And, I want young ladies to understand some of the things young men go through.

BPM: Take us inside the book. What are two major events taking place?
RB: One major event that takes place is when Slip is kidnapped by gang members and unwillingly becomes involved with a robbery. Since he has been raised with family values he knows stealing and robbery is wrong. But when he finds himself in a good place at a bad time, he does what he believes is in the best interest of the people being robbed and goes along with the robbery as if he’s a willing participant. Once he’s alone and in the company of this bad influence he experiences what so many youth find happens to them, he begins to question his home training.
Also another ongoing event or more of a growing revelation throughout the story is the relationship and challenges that Slip’s parents discover, face, and eventually resolve. The father is very strict and believes his wife babies their son, yet he spends very little time with him because he’s trying to make money for the family. The mother is unhappy having given up her career for the move and has become a housewife looking for fulfillment. However, I’m proud that both situations provide enlightenment and growth for Slip, his parents, and other people around them.

BPM: Who were your favorites? Are your characters from the portrayal of real people?
RB: Slip is definitely my favorite because we get to see him grow. We watch him go through some of the natural occurrences of young manhood and also see him help others. I like the fact too that through him we get to witness how our young people sometimes see, feel, and experience their family life. I also like Zena, the object of his puppy love: she’s a feisty character like many young ladies her age. Evelyn Henderson I think surely portrays the thread of her family, I like her spirit. And yes, I think these characters portray people most of us are familiar with in one way or another.

BPM: What are some of their specific issues, needs or problems addressed in this book?
RB: Well this is a coming-of-age story so I wanted to address a few things 14 year-old boys go through at that age. Things like: first kiss and puppy love, sibling rivalry, wanting to be heard, recognized and understood: in this case Slip wants all this from his dad. The story also briefly addresses and without being preachy the importance of staying a virgin until married, the perils of bad association, drinking, and smoking. Also, I show how family issues affect our children whether they speak on it or not. As parents we can’t be with our children all the time and there are times our kids are faced with tough people and touch choices, but if we raise them right most of the time then can prevail over them. This story shows that and also shows how we as parents have growing to do as well.

BPM: What do you think makes your book different from others on the same subject? Share a few of your reviews.
RB: My story is different because I chose to write it from a child’s point of view and simply show realistically that as parents and a family unit that we all have growing to do. I also feel my story is different because it also shows that while a two parent home is best for a child, providing is not all there is.

A child needs a parent’s attention and time as well. Then, to add entertainment and excitement for the young curious mind I gave Slip the whimsical gift of premonition, an asset that adds a bit of mystery to his life almost as much as his quest to discover who his mysterious neighbor is. So you have a mixture of real life issues and discoveries, sprinkled with a little mystery and suspense. I’ve also included 10 workbook questions at the end of the book to query the reader about what they got from the story and to address some things going on in their own life. Also, as a poet I wanted to entertain the reader in another way and did the synopsis poetically and included another poem at the end.

Early reviews for Young Adult Novella: A Slip In the Right Direction
"A Slip In The Right Direction speaks to an all too familiar reality of America's Black and Brown folk who are in a day-today struggle to survive."
---Bruce George, Co-Founder of Def Poetry Jam and Founder of The Bandana Republic

"...Thought provoking and well written. Young readers will be texting their friends about the book and eagerly awaiting the sequel."
----Brian W. Smith, bestselling author of the novel BEATER

BPM: What makes you powerful as a person and a writer? Who are your mentors?
RB: I believe my power comes from the love of people and getting to know the “human condition.” I care about people, who they are, and why they do what they do, what motivates and drives them. I try to relay what I learn through my characters. My greatest mentor is my mother. Even now as a senior citizen she’s teaching me and showing me about how the twilight years of ones life can be. But seasoned writers like Alice Walker, Maya Angelou, Toni Morrison, J California Cooper and Zora Neale Hurston are on my list of admired wordsmiths. But trust me, that list is extended by a lot of new artists too, too long to list here.

BPM: A Legacy is something that is handed down from one period of time to another period of time. Finish this sentence: My writing offers the following legacy to future readers...
RB: My writing offers the following legacy to future readers... write from your heart & soul, believe in yourself, and your message will touch the heart & soul of others.

BPM: Share with us your latest news or upcoming book releases.
RB: I am working on a few things which include two adult novels. How Easy We Forget which is the story of a bored housewife and mother who goes outside her family looking for gratification and brings back serious problems for herself and family, but ultimately learns the lesson of being thankful for what you have or you can lose it. Also another family saga, Between The Tears And The Laughter, which takes place in Louisiana and is about the squabbles, lives, loves, and lessons of five siblings and how they gain insight into the real relation and secrets between their parents.
Also, I’m working on another chapbook of short stories and poetry entitled, It Just Ran Across My Mind. The Clifton Henderson series also continues next year with part 2 – A Stranger Called Me. This time Slip is about 16 in this story, now he’s got the girl, he’s a little cockier, a bit wiser, very popular, and just like his family and friends sometimes he doesn’t recognize who he has become or his own actions. His gift of premonition has increased and he’s weighed down with the knowledge of what to do about his neighbor who is no longer a mystery.

BPM: How can our readers reach you online?
RB: I can be reached at my cyber home which is http://www.rachelberry.webs.com/ and upcoming a home for Slip and his readers at: http://www.thecliftonhendersonseries.com/blog. I’m always happy to hear from my readers and can be reached at: rachelwrites2@yahoo.com

Have you ever watched the Golden Girls? Remember when Sophia would say, “Picture it, Sicily 1953.” Well I’m about to have a Sophia moment (lol). Picture it, 2003 a tech savvy New York sista (that’s me) absolutely loves buying the latest gadgets. If it was hot on the Circuit City shelves, I had to have it and I worked hard to get it. Now flash forward a few years later and I’m writing posts about how to breath new life into my old laptop. These days the only new gadgets I see are Leapster Learning Systems for my toddler.

I work from home, as you know, so most days my laptop, graphics programs, and external hard drive are pretty much all I need. While I was at Blogalicious 2010, I discovered 5 gadgets that every blogger and entrepreneur should have in their mobile office.

If you read my first lesson learned, I told you I spent all day Friday running around trying to catch a flight to the conference. That included frantic calls to the hotel, family, and hubby, which killed my cell phone battery. Every time I got to another airport I was scrambling to find an outlet to charge my phone AND then at the conference it was always that moment when I really wanted to take a picture or do video that my battery would die. As luck would have it, during my time as one of the volunteers for the Blogalicious Geek Lounge, I got to chat with Jessica, a representative from a company called iGo. They make portable battery chargers so you can charge your mobile device on the go AND they are environmentally friendly. I found myself saying, “I wish I had one of these when I missed my flight!” I’m going to get one (hopefully), test it out, and tell you about it in more detail later.

There are a host of activities involved in running a small business. And being every woman leaves you with a full schedule with lots of attention to detail and decision-making. It's no surprise that part of being a business owner involves being in control over business finances. Ensuring that there is ample cash and knowing how to manage money is a skill that you will need to develop. Let's look at three components that will help you prepare a more accurate business budget: budgeting, planning, and forecasting.

Budgeting

Business budgeting involves the management of your company's financial resources. In order for the process to be done well budget managers should carefully monitor the sources and uses of cash in the business. This is important because it allows you to put your finger on the pulse of financial activity. By understanding what is normal in the course of business such as seasonal revenues or abnormal cash injections you can better project your financial position at a given point in time by becoming familiar with the ebbs and flows of cash.

Planning

In planning the allocation of resources there are various tools that can help you in budgeting. Some resources include accounting software that have budgeting features included in them. Some spreadsheet programs also have budgets that are pre-formatted for you. Alternatively, if you are tech savvy then you might also choose to design a business budget from scratch. Whatever method you choose remember that your forecasts are only as good as the input that you use. Be sure to use reliable data and double-check formulas that you create in spreadsheet programs.

Forecasting

Forecasting your budget is more of an art than a science. The more research that you do the closer to accurate your numbers will be. Don't simply rely on your instincts. Check out past financial reports to see the ups and downs of your business. If you are starting a new company then you can also get information from other business owners who have companies similar to yours or by speaking with an accountant or business consultant that has knowledge of your industry.

Now that you are aware of the role of budgeting in your company and some of the tools that managers use in the process you are on track to creating a budget of your own. If you want to learn more about preparing forecasts for your business visit http://www.tbsusa.com

Cheyney University Of Pennsylvania

Cheyney, Pennsylvania

Founded in 1837 as the Institute for Colored Youth, Cheyney University of Pennsylvania is the oldest of the Historically Black Colleges and Universities in America. The founding of Cheyney University was made possible by Richard Humphreys, a Quaker *philanthropist who bequeathed $10,000, one tenth of his estate, to design and establish a school to educate the descendents of the African race.

Born on a plantation in the West Indies, Richard Humphreys came to Philadelphia in 1764. Having witnessed the struggles of African Americans competing unsuccessfully for jobs due to the influx of immigrants, he became interested in their plight. In 1829, race riots heightened and it was that year Richard Humphreys wrote his will and charged thirteen fellow Quakers to design an institution: "...to instruct the descendents of the African Race in school learning, in the various branches of the mechanic Arts, trades and Agriculture, in order to prepare and fit and qualify them to act as teachers...."

The school began in Philadelphia as the Institute for Colored Youth and successfully provided free classical education for qualified young people. In 1902, the Institute moved to George Cheyney's farm, 25 miles west of Philadelphia. In 1913, the name was changed to Cheyney State Teachers College; in 1921, the State Normal School at Cheyney; and in 1959, Cheyney State College. In 1983, Cheyney joined the State System of Higher Education as Cheyney University of Pennsylvania.

Today, Cheyney University students represent a variety of races, cultures, and nationalities who receive education instruction beyond the vision of Richard Humphreys. Cheyney graduates still become teachers, but students also enter careers such as journalism, medicine, business, science, law, communication, and government service. The university offers baccalaureate degrees in more than 30 disciplines and the master’s degree in education.

There are many types of businesses that can benefit from using REAL greeting cards to strengthen their relationships with current customers, because let's face it, we can all use repeat business.

And now there’s no better way to remind your past customers that you are still there for them than by sending them a greeting card on a regular basis. If your business budget allows, you might even consider including a gift with your greeting card. A greeting card is something that is going to ”stick” in their minds when they are looking for someone to provide the products and services you provide. Compare this to an email that will possibly be read one time,be forgotten about and more than likely, deleted (if it even gets read at all). A greeting card will get your name, your company, and your message into their hands and it will most likely be opened and looked at.

During these tough economic times, businesses can’t take any customer or client for granted and should strive to bring them back through the door time and time again. A few businesses that come immediately to mind are health and wellness practitioners, doctors, dentists, mortgage consultants, real estate agents, financial planners, payroll services, insurance agencies, beauty salons, landscapers, plumbers, …well you get the idea. When you think about it, any business can utilize a Greeting Card Service for as little as $10 per customer per year.

Send Out Cards is great online connection tool you can use to build and strengthen your relationships with your current customers and can be used to solicit and prospect your next long term customer. Let me show you how to keep those customers coming back again, and again, and again, and better yet, refer their friends and family to you as
well.

A few weeks ago the family and I went to Seafood Fest NC. While driving I overheard my son (age 3) and his aunt (age 10) (I know crazy right) in the back of the car. It sounded like my son was playing with her DSi, but that couldn’t be right because he’s only three. I say to her, "Is he REALLY playing or is he just pressing the buttons to be cute?" She told me he was actually playing the game and I couldn’t believe it! I promptly told my hubby, “Get the camera out! Take a picture of this moment. My boy is growing up!”

my-toddler-likes-leapster.png

The week before that, we were having our usual family fun on Saturday and I was looking for things to buy him for his upcoming birthday (November 18th). At Best Buy he took a liking to the Leapster, so I added it to the list because I LOVE LeapFrog’s educational toys and videos. BUT when I saw him having so much fun with the DSi on our trip, I thought maybe that was the better choice? BUT I quickly decided to stick to the Leapster, because I really wanted to focus on learning games.

While at Blogalicous 2010, I was introduced to Sesame Streets new series of learning video games for Wii and the DS. I couldn’t believe it! I recorded a few video clips below to show you the Wii games in action. They have some great new video games plus they created a bigger, kid-friendly stylus for the DS. I was also lucky enough to snag this 10% coupon code for Sesame Street, if you purchase them on their website, use the code MOMMY at checkout.

Blogalicious: Sesame Street Games For Wii and DS

Did you watch the two videos above? Man, my decisions just got harder. I’ll keep you posted on any new developments. I really want to figure out which handheld game system is better for my toddler AND will give me the best bang for my buck. So for now its Leapster vs Nintendo DS. Hopefully I don’t discover something else to make the picking process even harder.

Before I forget, please remember to vote for my Bedtime Story in the NatureMade Contest. Did you know you can vote once a day? Thanks in advance for your support!

Central State University

Wilberforce, Ohio

Central State University in Wilberforce, Ohio, is one of the nation's oldest historically black universities, with a 120-year legacy of academic and athletic achievements. The College of Education, the College of Arts and Sciences, and the College of Business and Industry, which includes the Departments of Manufacturing Engineering and Water Resources Management, form the core of the University’s varied academic offerings.

The CSU Institute for Urban Education (IUE) builds on Central State’s roots as a center of excellence for teacher education. It also reflects the College of Education’s emphasis on preparing teachers for work in today’s urban classrooms. Housed in the newly constructed Center for Education and Natural Sciences, the IUE serves as a national resource center for the training of urban teachers and the exchange of scholarship on urban education issues. A newly developed program in environmental engineering builds on CSU’s signature Water Resources Management Program, and a new major in criminal justice will further expand career opportunities for Central State University students.

A centrally located branch campus in Dayton, Ohio, CSU-Dayton, offers a range of courses and class schedules that serve the needs of nontraditional learners wishing to complete their undergraduate degrees, pursue master’s degrees in education, or take advantage of professional development opportunities.

Central State is home to the nationally renowned Central State University Chorus, which has twice been nominated for a Grammy. The Lady Marauders basketball team is perennially in the national rankings and has traveled to 12 straight NAIA national tournaments. The track and field team as well as the cheerleading and dance troupes have also won championships and awards, and the Central State marching band, the Invincible Marching Marauders, have twice performed at the national Honda Battle of the Bands and been featured in the 2006 film Dave Chappelle’s Block Party. With the return of football to Central State in 2005, the Mighty Marauders are reviving a legacy that produced several national championships. Central State’s impending move to NCAA Division II will widen the University’s competitive field and provide more exposure for Central State University’s student athletes.

CSU is Ohio’s only predominately African American public institution of higher education, but it is, and has always been, “open to all persons of good moral character,” as ordained by the 1887 legislation that created Central State's predecessor. The University actively promotes diversity in its student body, faculty and staff, even as the institution adheres to its core historical responsibility to educate young African American men and women.

Everything starts with you!

You must take action, you must take initiative, you must make a commitment to take control and do a lot of something. Building a business, building a team, building an empire is all about action! You must make a decision about what you want and you must make a decision about how you are going to get what you want and take the appropriate action. You won't get much by staying home on the couch in front of your television set. You probably also won't get much by simply logging on to Facebook each day and taking a look at what others are up to. You must be out exposing others about you, what you do, about your product, your service your opportunities. Literally, not a day should go by that you aren't talking to someone new or communicating and connecting in some form or fashion to and/or with someone new - that is if you are serious about building a lucrative business and becoming financially free.

You must be accountable.

You must set goals and achieve the goals that are being set.

You must be active!

The only way that your business will grow is if you take responsibility for your business and for the growth of your business. There is no room for finger pointing and there is no room to blame others for your failures and for your lack of growth, lack of sales, lack of profits, or whatever the case may be. In your business, it's starts with YOU. Your business will only amount to what you put into it and to what you make of it. Be accountable and take action. Stay in a constant state of action to increase your profit potential!

Blogalicious 2010 - LaShanda Henry

Today is my second official day back at home from the very amazing Blogalicious 2010 Conference, which took place at the Ritz Carlton in South Beach Miami. This event was created by three amazing mompreneurs, the MamaLaw group and its really all about celebrating diversity in the blogging community.

So let me tell you one not-so secret thing. This is the second conference I have ever been to, the first being Disney Magical Mocha Moms, back in 2009. My online business is run completly through social networking and social media marketing so I have never really felt the need to do the 'conference thing', but when I took a look at this particular event, I knew it was well worth going to.

That being said, Blogalicious was 3 days and over that time I learned SO MUCH that I didn't think doing one post or uploading a few pictures would really do this event justice SO for the next 30 days I will be sharing my 30 Blog and Business Lessons Learned at Blogalicious 2010. From building your brand to working with brands, building your blog to connecting with other bloggers ... I learned alot and you know me ... I always like to share what I've learned with you.

To hear all my lessons learned be sure to subscribe to sistasense, befriend me on Facebook, and/or follow me on Twitter.

I have a ton of videos of the event, that I will be posting here. Here is an interview I did with Pam Perry entitled "LaShanda Henry at Blogalicious 2010"

“You are never too old to set another goal or to dream a new dream.” C.S. Lewis

What an empowering quote!

Another one of my favorite quotes in this category is by Sharon Williams “It’s never too late to redeem your dreams!!

What is it that you dreamed about when you were a child? What stopped you from moving forward?

This was one of the questions asked of the participants in my Dream Launch Mentoring and Coaching program.

Quite often we allow time to influence what we do in life and once we get past a certain age you may figure that it’s too late so yousettle for what life presents to you. Why is this? Are you influencedby others? Or maybe what society dictates as the normal age to startthinking more sensible and slow down your ambitious endeavors?

There are many who started late in life and then who is to say what the definition for starting late is. Is there a magic number?

I’m sure you’ve heard of Kernel Sanders of Kentucky Fried Chicken and others. Some probably thought he was a little on the crazy side toembark on a dream at his age and yet he did and this franchise is athriving business even now.

What does it take to continue to dream and not just dream but take targeted action?
What about setting another goal and dreaming a new dream?

Well one essential key is to have confidence. Yes, you must have unshakable confidence in your abilities and your gift. There are goingto be naysayers and those who feel you need to do like the rest of themand settle. In order to stay motivated to continue you need confidence.

Faith
In the bible it reads “Faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen.”

Here’s another quote; Take the first step in faith. You don’t have to see the whole staircase, just take the first step. Martin LutherKing, Jr.

The right mindset
If you have the mindset that you’re not good enough or that you’re not worth it you’re going to definitely reach animpasse as you move forward to not only dream but take targeted action.

Crystal clear vision
Not being crystal clear on your vision is a definite way to sabotage your success and cause you to give up on yourdream or even worse never set a new goal. Your vision will provide youwith a healthy navigation system.

Not only will it provide guidance when setting your goals but will greatly enhance your activity ofwriting your goals and adding action steps.

These are a few things you need to continue to dream and take targeted action.
I’m sure you can add a few yourself and I invite you to do so. Here’s onemore “tenacity.” When it’s all said and done you must have a mindset tocontinue in the face of tests and discouragement regardless of whatother’s think or the opposition presented to you with a resolve of noretreat.

Go ahead Dream again, set new goals and take targeted action!

If you’re looking to connect with an accountability partner , clear the clutter inside/out, get crystal clear on your vision, set 1Audacious goal, get laser focused so you can be positioned to manifestthat goal then I invite you to join me for “30 days of Empowerment”mentoring program. Brand Makers News The small business resource for urban entrepreneurs named25 urban entrepreneurs to follow on Twitter. I was named 1 of 25 otherentrepreneurs. It was a pleasant surprise and I was in good company.

When I started on Twitter I didn’t get it. People were talking about what they had for breakfast, lunch and dinner and some of the tweetswere a little embarrassing. I couldn’t get with the 140 characterlimit. So, I just set it aside for a few. I soon noticed a trend ofFriday Follow mentions and one of the common denominators of most wasthat it was those who had a great following so I vowed to get morefollowers so I could be included in a Follow Friday mention. I soonacquired a taste for quality over quantity and started tweetingoriginal and other empowering quotes. I soon watched as othersretweeted my posts and soon followed. I watched and learned more andmore about Twitter. I started off as @RobinTramble and soon added @empowermentdivawhich I stuck with. Well, my following is a little over 100 followers,I like to call them friends I now have over 8000 friends/followers andit was au naturale’ no gimmicks.

This past Friday night, I recorded an audio letter for the current attendees of my upcoming webinar entitled Your Business, Your Taxes, Your Wealth as I wanted to do something different. While the webinar purpose is to show how you can stabilize and even grow your business through effective tax and accounting strategies I realized that what first has to happen is a total mindset "shift" on how we currently think about building wealth. If we don't have a proactive approach to building wealth, non of the strategies will truly work for your business. Below is an excerpt of the actual email blast and transcript of the audio letter I emailed out. This first part first examines the Mindset of wealth vs. money. The rest of the letter explore Wealth in relation to our businesses and is intended to challenge your thoughts and beliefs. I would love for you to listen to it in it's entirety as well! Register for the webinar to receive the entire letter. This webinar is turning to be something very special and I'd love to have your participation!

As always,

Be empowered!

Challenging your current Mindset regarding "WEALTH and Money"

I want to challenge your current idea of Wealth and money by offering that they are not the same thing. Where money is a tool used to exchange servicesor goods or a way we move wealth around, idea of wealth is asintangible as love and hate. It involves our perception of life and in essence the freedom we desireto have within our lives. For many of us that includes possessions thatmake living life easier (a workable car, a nice clean home, ability totravel, good health, healthy children, technology, the internet, ipods, etc) Wealth can take different forms for different people example,Some sections of this country and other countries create entire -microeconomies by living off a barter system. People simply barter wealthwith each other and don’t use money. They live what they perceive astotally wealthy lives and are able to pass that wealth down to theirchildren.

Alone money isn’t valuable. Money is only valuable when it can be attached
tosomething that is perceived to be valuable to the other person. Moneymakes it easy to trade wealth as it creates a even playing field toexchange wealth - If I need surgery, I cannot offer a doctor something Ifind wealthy in exchange for his work, but if I gave him money, thatwas equal in value, he could take that money and exchange it forsomething he finds valuable and wealthy for him (a Bentley perhaps? )Because we can trade wealth by using money we begin to define wealth asbeing able to make as much money as possible.

Why do some businesses succeed and others fail ? How are some of us able to
create $100 mill corporations, and live a life of “wealth” that we pass on to our children. How is that making money is very easy to do but keeping it and using it in a way to build wealth is very difficult for some?
