I upload numerous posts to my blog each week. Some get lots of comments while others, well let's just say there's an echo. Sometimes, people prefer to send me private emails, all of which I read and enjoy because they help me know what matters to you so I can focus my blogging efforts on things that you will most enjoy and benefit from. Thanks for the love!
Beginning this month, I'm starting to share the most popular blog posts from the prior month. This will be a great way for me to monitor and summarize popular topics, and you can also use the information to decide what to write about at your blog. Summarizing popular posts also allows me to highlight the most popular posts for people who are too busy (and I know that's everyone ...) to read a new post each time it's added. Here are the 3 most popular Indie Business Blog posts of May 2008, based on comments and discussion here and at other social sites where I cross post.* The New Family Business: Nine Reasons Why Home-Based Business Ownership Works For Parents. This post seemed to really hit a nerve with young women who are considering marriage and family. I think more and more young parents will see business ownership as a necessity, not an option.* Indie Confidential: Prepare For 5 Indie Business Pitfalls. This post covers things that most business experts don't comment much on. The most popular aspect of this post seemed to revolve around my common that, in business, "your spouse or significant other may not support you." Ouch.* Who to Follow On Twitter: If Susie Asked You To Jump Off a Bridge, Would You? This post is all about how to use Twitter efficiently and effectively. Who wants to follow Twitters who are not actually tweeting? And who wants to spend all day tweeting? Not me, and apparently not a lot of you either!

"Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate. Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure. It is our light, not our darkness that most frightens us. We ask ourselves, Who am I to be brilliant, gorgeous, talented, fabulous? Actually, who are you not to be? You are a child of God. Your playing small does not serve the world. There is nothing enlightened about shrinking so that other people won't feel insecure around you. We are all meant to shine, as children do. We were born to make manifest the glory of God that is within us. It is not just in some of us; it is in everyone. And as we let our own light shine, we unconsciously give other people permission to do the same. As we are liberated from our own fear, our presence automatically liberates others." ......Self Esteem Builds BusinessJoanie

It is official. Senator Obama is the democratic nominee and I will say soon to be president of the United States of America. This is historic for me. I remember when Nelson Mandela became the president of South Africa I said a prayer, God in my life time let me see an African America man (woman) as president of the United States. And it seems like my prayer might be answered. I am so proud of Mr. Obama and have to say this is the first time that I have ever, EVER been excited about a candidate running for president of the United States. I think he can be the balm our nation needs. I am reading his books to know a little more about him but I feel in my heart that if he is elected president that yes it will be an historic event but it will be the day that the Untied States will become for me, the great nation I was taught it was in grade school. I know it will do a lot for our young black children to see someone coming from humble beginnings to become president and letting them know that there is such a thing called the American Dream and that anything is possible. It will hopefully help to eradiate some negative images people have of black people and black men in particular. The media has been cruel in their depiction of black people and black men. But we have also helped the media to continue to promote these negative images and crazy stereotypes a la Flavor Flave. I offer my prayers for Mr. Obama because being president comes with a lot of baggage now add on the fact that he is black. I know this, I am ready for a change along with millions of Americans, Black, White, Hispanic, and all other cultures and nationalities that is sick of this old regime, sick of Bush and sick of being lied to and betrayed. Yes, Mr. Barack I believe in your slogans of hope and change. So let us send our prayers to his him, his family and for change. Please feel free to leave me your thoughts.

I thank God for Dudley products on nights like tonight. I have been so busy that I have missed 2 weeks of going to the salon. So I decided to do my own hair. I used my Dudley Deluxe Shampoo which has left my hair shiny and manageble and then I finished it off with my Dudley's Hair Mask which I just got this week. I had never used it before and to be honest I did not know what to expect. Well I am pleased with the results after covering my hair with a plastic shower cap and sitting under the dryer for a few minutes, I was able to actually rinse it out and use Dudley's setting lotion and total control shining gel to set my hair with rollers. I should get back under the dryer but I decided to write my blog instead. Now I have been a Dudley Beauty Advisor for a few months now and I figure the best way to learn all of the products and describe them is to actually experience them for myself. I have had fun using the skin care system and makeup reminding myself how great it is to be a Black woman and all of the options that we actually have in America.Where else can you make money by making your friends and family as fabulous as you are. :)It is currently summer time and I am having a ball with my new lip candyThey are very shimmery with nice summer shades while tasting sweet My Peach Pop taste like a Pop up Ice cream and my Frosted Chocolate tast like chocolate.I had to get the accent shades of eye shadow for the summer. The sun bronzes my skin while Dudley Cosmeticshighlights my skin.Loving them.to see some of the shades go to my sitehttp://www.vjones.dudleycosmetics.comOk well back 2 the dryer. Thanks for reading and I will try to take some photos!!Valerie

Today’s Worst of Times Can Produce Your Best of TimesBy Valarie Eiland DavisFounder & CEO of Venterprises Realty Group and The Venterprises Foundationvdedavis@gmail.comIt’s trite but true to say that bad experiences can bring out the best in us. Bad grades can make students work harder. Bad work performance reviews can make us work smarter. Bad relationships can teach us how to be better family members and friends. Bad meals might even make us better cooks. Well, the bad economic times we are living through right now can either bring out the worst in us or make us think thoughts and take actions that will eventually produce some of the best times we could ever have. It’s your choice!I love the fact that bad times make us scrutinize our money matters with a magnifying glass – from how we spend our pennies, nickels and dimes, to whether it’s the right time to buy or sell our homes. Bad times like these force us to do things we should have been doing anyway when it comes to managing our money, assets and liabilities. But, none of us can think of everything. So, I would like to share a few thoughts that might put you on a clearer or faster path through the present worst of times to your future best of times.GET YOUR FAMILY’S PRIORITIES STRAIGHT AND MAKE SURE EVERYONE IS ON BOARDIf you don’t have a budget, schedule two hours with other household decision makers to make one, write it down, and share it with everyone that lives with you.• Do you know how much money is really coming into your home? Women, statistics show we will outlive the men in our lives, so it pays to know the numbers from start to finish.• Does everyone in your home agree on “needs” versus “wants”? What may be unnecessary spending to you may be essential to someone else.• Do you know the spending tradeoffs your family is making and how they will affect you down the road? Those quick fast food stops may add up to the cost of the school supplies you need to buy in just a few short months. How would you like it if your state and national elected leaders managed your hard-earned tax dollars the way you manage the money that supports your family? Enough said.SAVE MONEY THE RIGHT WAYEveryone has heard the personal finance commandment “Pay yourself first.” Well, here’s the way I see it. Most of us end up paying the government first if you have federal and state deductions made from your paychecks. Congratulations to you entrepreneurs who get all of your money up front! That said, here’s my recommended “Payout Plan:”• Exercise your faith faithfully. Pay your tithes and offerings. If you believe God will never leave you hanging, then act you believe it and don’t hold back even in the worst of times.• Cover the basics. Make sure your needs are covered comfortably with a reserve cushion of at least three months. This is the first savings account any family (which includes single folks) should have. Don’t do any non-essential spending until this is done. That’s right, I said “none!”• Insure yourself adequately. Do you know how much money your dependents would need to live on in the event of your death? I know, I know. You don’t like to think about death, and you’re planning on being around for a long time. Well, few people actually plan to die – but those that do have a plan do their duty by their family members and leave them able to live a stable financial life. Have a free consultation with an insurance advisor. Have the advisor review your current policies (through your job and your personal purchases), and find out how the policies work. Then figure out what you want to provide via insurance and make the investment. I talked last week with an insurance advisor who met with two working parents on Friday and the wife was dead by Sunday – unexpectedly, of course. The worse news is that he purchased life insurance and she said “No, I’m fine,” figuring that her husband’s policy was enough. It’s not enough that the husband and children have to grieve the loss of their wife and mother, but they will likely lose their house and struggle financially for some time to come.• Elders first. Make sure those with the least number of working years ahead of them are taken care of first. The younger ones, if necessary can and will make their own way if you give them the basics. This may sound backwards to those of you who are saving for college before your own retirement. But, you are the only person who contributes to your retirement. Your children have you and themselves. Work with a financial planner to figure out how much money you will actually need to retire (or go on line and use a free calculator like the one at www.moneycentral.com ), and then take action.• Invest as aggressively as possible. If you are under 50 years of age, there is no reason for you to be investing as conservatively as someone who is over 50. Often we take the less risky route because we haven’t invested the time and energy to understand what we believe are riskier alternatives. Don’t try to become a financial expert, but work with one who has experience with people in your particular situation. Think of it this way. You work hard for your money. Be willing to work at least half as hard when deciding where to invest it.I hope you can see how having your family make important and manageable changes in these worst of times will surely pay off financially in the future – laying the groundwork for the best of times.I’ll let you chew on that much for now. In upcoming articles I will address:SPENDING MONEY:What Is Your Money Personality and How Is It Defining Your Life?HOMEOWNERSHIP:Real Estate is Still the Ultimate InvestmentThat’s all for now! Feel free to contact me with feedback, suggested topics for future articles, questions and concerns. And, as I love to say “When we know better, we can do better.”

Excerpt from Chapter 2 of my book:"First of all, I have to tell you, I never imagined I’d be on the dating circuit again in my forties. I honestly believed I would be living out the rest of my life in a perfect marriage with the man of my dreams. Unfortunately that “dream” didn’t take long to turn into a nightmare! I’ll spare you the gory details, but I will say this: Ladies, be careful what you pray for in your desperation to get married by a certain age. Remember, you can do bad all by yourself.Obviously, my idea of dating is a lot different now as a woman pushing fifty compared to when I was in my twenties. Back in the day, I tried to keep my social calendar filled. I had no problem going out with different guys, sometimes more than one in a night, and partying until the break of dawn.Although variety was the spice of my life, I had to have the right kind of man for the occasion. He had to be respectfully employed and make more money than me. Yes, I knew some very handsome drug dealers who were rolling in the big bucks and other charming men of ill-repute who had deep pockets but, as a broadcast journalist, I didn’t want to be put in a position to have to report about them on the news.My guy also had to be able to carry on an intelligent conversation about any subject, rock my world in the bedroom, enjoy working out (and have the physique to prove it), and appreciate my knowledge of sports. Because my job required me to make numerous public appearances, I had to insist on being in the company of a man who would make me look even better. That was then..."To find out the rest of my story about dating after 40, please pick up a copy of my book: "Whatever! A Baby Boomer's Journey Into Middle Age." Available on amazon.com and barnes and noble.

Here are the 5 myths about being anentrepreneur.Myth #1: Entrepreneurs only care about making moneyMany people think entrepreneurs do what they do strictly forthe money, and that taking risks is all about entrepreneur'spersonal reward. While fear of poverty or use of money as a scorecard may havesome relevance - and there are, of course, some entrepreneursfocused primarily on financial profits - generally, money is notthe ultimate motivator for the majority of entrepreneurs. Many successful entrepreneurs do not live a lavish lifestylesthat reflect their financial success. Their motives are oftenmore about ego and emotion. For most entrepreneurs, money isjust a way to keep score.Money is also a way to do bigger and more exciting deals. Thethrill of challenge, the motivation of a new idea, and the risksinvolved have far more power to motivate the entrepreneurialspirit than money.Myth #2: Winning means somebody else is losingYou may have heard of people speak of success in business asbeing "on the backs of other," suggesting that if anentrepreneur is winning, somebody else must be losing. This attitude makes it seem like the only possible outcome of abusiness deal is to have one side win and the other side lose. The resulting bottom line is zero. This is sometimes referred toas the "zero-sum game."Entrepreneurs are creative and expansionary thinkers. Ratherthan accepting a zero-sum result, and, contrary to the myth thatan entrepreneur's success comes at the expense of others, entrepreneurs often try to figure out ways that both sides canwin.Myth #3: The greater the risk, the greater the rewardThis myth is always passed on to young entrepreneurs aseconomic gospel. The theoretical relationship between risk andreward is coincidental at best, and then only in certainsituations.Risk is a relative concept. All else being equal, real risksare modified by knowledge, experience, hard work, passion, andunforeseen circumstances. Applying knowledge to any investmentcan change the risk profile.Equally important in considering risks, perception of risks isoften different from reality. What one person considers highrisk might be from another's perspective a sure thing. Who thencan say what's a great risk or a great reward?Myth #4: As an entrepreneur, you can get rich quickHave you heard of those dotcom millionaires? In the internetworld, it sure seemed like people got rich overnight. But alwaysremember that things often seem easier than they are.It may seem to you that entrepreneurs made the huge amount ofmoney, but do you know that there are lots of hardwork before hemade it. Think twice about becoming an entrepreneur, if youthink you can get rich quick.Myth #5: A good business plan is the entrepreneur's criticalroadmap to successVenture capitalists often make business plans the key criteriain deciding whether or not to fund new companies. Businesseducators often talk about business plans like they are the HolyBible of business success. The theory is that the better andmore complete the business plan, the better the business willgo. This is a myth. While having an idea or a goal is critical, believing that youcan create a structured, believeing that you can create astructured business plan that will endure time or place issimply naive. In the real world,it rarely happens.Business plans can be useful initial tools, but they should beused only as guidelines. Trial and error, luck, creativity, flexibility, and adapting to unforeseeable developmentsultimately are what make an entrepreneurial venture succeed.Successful entrepreneurs know when to use creative problemsolving rather than theoretical business plans.About the Author: Joe is an enlightened entrepreneur startinghis business in an out-of-the-box way. Beneath CNN's top news of the Democratic Nomination sits an article that reads, "The Price of Parenthood - Mother's love worth $117,000 per year, study says". You can read the article here.I probably would have passed this article but decided to take a gander. In brief it states that SAHM work 94.4 hrs/wk. The basis of the dollar amount is due to all the overtime hours we put in for a typical day. And get this a woman that works outside the home makes in comparison (average) over 68K. Now I worked outside the home and have come close to that salary ( I cringe ever time I think about it) But whether you are Mom who works outside the home, stay at home, work at home are far more worth all the rubies and diamonds in the world. There is no dollar amount to equate what my Mother did for me or what I do for my kids now. Although I would like for someone to write me a check for $1,000,000.00 once in a while. LOLWhat about you? Is there really a price value for what you do as a mother or what our mothers did for us? Comments are welcome.

Hello Ladies,Just wanted to let you know that I found a great line of cosmetics called NYX. I may work with them with the MUArtistry Business as far as using some of their line when I do my makeovers. I love finding new things and trying them and advise women that I know to try them also. Their line is not expensive and their eyeshadows are the bomb. They have alot of pigment which is my greatest issue when working on darker skin. I also like their eyeliner pen which is called, "Tattoo". Great pen and excellent drawing precision. It stays on even with tears which is good for 'Brides' on that great day. I like their lip glosses, their lip tints and also cheek creams which work excellent on dry skin but not on oily. I love sharing beauty info espeically if it is working for me. If you have a favorite product that you might think I can use let me know and I will try it and let my circle know about it. Thanks and stay beautiful even on the go.Kellywww.nyxcosmetics.com

Bold, exciting and 3 dimensional. Very loud and extremely noisy! A variety of bright oranges heavily defined with black accents. A great shade of green rests in the background as is complimented with other natural tones.
The small squares were cut and convered with canvas, decoratively painted and attached. The larger rectangle is a canvas board which sits up from the painting about an inch and a half and consists of a deeply textured design.
Can you hear it?
Title: Urban Elegance

Well now, this rectangular piece is anything but a rectangle. Intended to evoke a classic feel without being too plainly stated. The slightly off-centered focal point is a textured, canvas panel that is elevated by decorative hardware. The custom frame has been decoratively painted as well.

Praying for a man will get you a man but will he be the RIGHT man? Praying for a man with a job might be a good start but what other qualities should he have? Tall, Dark and Handsome? Good Provider? Loving and affectionate? Sense of humor? Loves kids? How does he treat his mother? What is he passionate about? Does he place God above everyone and everything else? The first time around I got just what I asked for simply because I didn’t know I could pray to God and ask for exactly what I wanted. God did His part by granting my request. But as I grew older and wiser I discovered I had prayed for the wrong things and then I had to turn around and pray to get out of the mess. The second mistake women make is thinking you can change him once you get him. If God hasn’t changed him yet, what makes you think you can?Today, as my husband and I celebrate our second wedding anniversary, I am so happy to say I got it right this time. I have a wonderful, new husband but I didn’t pray for him in the conventional sense. This time I asked God to create a new creature in me with a renewed spirit so that I would be deserving of a good husband and God did just what He promised and granted my request.I’m just a baby boomer in love!If you want to know more of my thoughts on dating after 40, check out my book, "Whatever! A Baby Boomer's Journey Into Middle Age." Available on amazon.com and barnesandnoble.com
