He had a client list that included the city of Compton, and helped build the city’s emergency communications center.Today he is poised to begin his life again.“I have to thank the Lord for this,” he told The Bulletin. “What finally cleared my name came out of the blue just when I thought everything was lost.”Neusom had been taking care of his mother’s business when it was discovered she had terminal cancer. “At that time she set up an account for my grandmother and my aunt, and I continued to take care of their needs after my mother died.”In compliance with government regulations, he notified the Social Security office that his mother had died. “In fact, I received two checks from them after she died, and I returned them,” he said. “I also notified the bank that they were not to accept anymore checks in my mother’s name from Social Security.”But deposits were made directly into the account shared by his grandmother and aunt. He did not realize that money continued to be issued to his mother until Social Security representatives came to his home.“I explained to them that I had notified them of my mother’s death,” Neusom said. “They had me sign a statement stating that I was aware of the deposits and thought the money was for my grandmother and my aunt. I had spent all of the money on their needs. They said they would take care of the clerical mistake. Next thing I knew I was indicted for Social Security fraud, which is a federal offense with a sentence of five to 10 years in prison.”A trial ensued. Neusom attempted to obtain bank records that would back up his story, but they were not available because the bank only keeps records for two years and the crime was allegedly committed several years before that.However, Social Security was unable to present proof that the crime had been committed.Although the jury found him guilty, Judge Robert Takasugi refused to impose even the minimum five-year sentence. He imposed five years of probation, instead. “This kept me out of prison, thank God,” Neusom said. “But according to the terms of the probation, I had to stay in Los Angeles. But I had just gotten married and my wife and I had moved to Las Vegas. I had sold my house in L.A. But I was not able to live in Las Vegas in the home I shared with my wife.”A divorce ensued, as did the destruction of his professional life. Neusom was founder and president of City Lights Software, a company that supplied security systems to many cities and other major clients.“I could not practice my profession because in my work I dealt with financial information and the terms of my probation prohibited me from doing that,” he said. “I was one of the first creators of Afro-Centric software and I had been a respected writer for black Websites. Everything was brought to a stop. I was 50 years old, homeless with no way to make a living in my profession because I could not be bonded.”Neusom had been offered a plea deal from the District Attorney’s office from the start, but he refused it. “I was not guilty of this offense,” he said. “I had done nothing wrong. I did not want to take a plea admitting guild for something I did not do.”Working to re-start his career within the limitations imposed by his probation, he continued a series of appeals. His case was brought before the 9thCircuit of the U.S. Court of Appeals, which kicked it back to Judge Takasugi. It seemed that a never-ending circle was being acted out, with his case going from one court to another with no apparent end in sight.He had come to Compton city officials with a plan for installation of a city-wide video surveillance system that would be controlled by citizens. “This city loved the idea,” he said. “It was on the agenda and ready to be approved.” Ironically, that deal was quashed when news reports revealed the city was in talks with a convicted felon.It was back to square one at that point.“Then the miracle happened,” said Neusom. “The bank called me to tell me that they had found on my signature card a note stating I had informed them of my mother’s death. Two days later they called again to tell me that not only had they found proof that I had notified them – they also found proof that Social Security had notified them as well.”He had been convicted for “intentionally” failing to notify Social Security of his mother’s death.“This new information pretty much made hash of the government’s case against me,” he said. “But it’s very difficult to reverse a conviction because it is difficult to get new evidence admitted. But the judge finally overturned my conviction.”Does a lawsuit lie ahead?“I’m not focused on anything like that,” Neusom said. “I bear no ill will to anyone. I just want to get my life started again and repair my business. I have skills and services that would benefit the residents of Compton and would help me put my life together again. That’s all I want.”Neusom thinks, despite everything that has happened to him, that he is a very lucky man.“Who would have thought that the bank would randomly find a bit of evidence that was crucial to me long after the trial was over,” he says. “That’s something I never expected and didn’t even hope for. That’s why I think God had something to do with it.”Although he never spent a day in prison, Neusom knows what it’s like to experience life as a convicted felon. THE GOALIt’s like reaching for something far away. If you keep on reaching and running without stopping, you will obtain what you are reaching for. Look at it this way, the years are going to pass anyway, so why not accomplish what you wish.The battle starts in your mind, that’s where it is. It is a war between your spirit and your mind. (Your mind being your common sense) Once your mind is working in cooperation with your spirit, the struggle ceases.It is almost like going down a long tunnel. You don’t see anything on your right or on your left. You only focus on what’s straight ahead.You are determined to get to the end of the tunnel because at the end of the tunnel the light appears. The sun looks like the dawning of a new day, with new opportunities. Nothing distracts you; you are staying on course.The word procrastination is not a part of your vocabulary. Most of the time that is the problem, people don’t act. Whatever needs to be done should be completed and taken care of in a timely manner. As a matter of fact, it should be done before the required time to make sure there are no slip-ups.Some people would say, “I’ll start when the kids grow-up, or when I attain a certain amount of money”. “I’m too old, or I will wait 2,5,10 years from now”. Well, those years are going to come and go and then you will think about the things that you could have accomplished but didn’t. Why not look back and be able to say you have attained your goal and dream.Another way is to go at it one day at a time. Instead of looking at it as a long haul, look at it as taking little leaps. You will be surprised at how, in time, you will be closer to your goal.You must understand that no one else controls your destiny. A lot of times people confide in others and ask their opinion on what they should do. The person or persons they confide in may not have any ambition to succeed, and jealousy steps in. They discourage and cause them to remain immobile. Stay away from those types of people. As soon as discouragement is thrown at you, throw it back. I am looking for a name

I have a business that is forever changing and there is no name that really feels unique. I am a sentimental person by nature. My sign is Pisces so be at one with the elements is who I am. I love life the memories in which are made and cherished, I love the moments we share and steal with people who are instrumental in our lives and I love the milestones we reach as we continue to live this life. I wanted my business name to reflected that so I came up with the M+3=SPECIAL EVENTS but I am not feeling it at all. My business partner who happens to be husband thinks that name is fine but it is still not right. My philosophy on my company is celebration, relaxation and education, so we cover a range of events, by the way M+3 stands for memories moments and milestones (M3). The Week's Report..........

I write to hold myself accountable to my thoughts, ideas, goals..........The results are in and I am prepared to share them with you. I have great news - the goal was to get three clients and I was able to get two. Yes, I was successful.I addressed the legislators at the Public Hearing for Access to Health Care. It was a rewarding experience as at the end of the meeting, a prospective client approached me. I have a meeting set up to discuss further.In addition, I have two meetings set this week one at the Mayors Office to meet with one of the staff members to address the health initiatives and research projects that are geared toward reaching the residents of the community. The other meeting is to reach out to the medical staff members that are parishioners to work out a plan of getting members of the churches to participate in healthy choices and health promotional events.The debut of my Health & Wellness show aired live on this past Saturday and it will be live on Saturdays at 11 am. It was off to a beginners start and I am very excited about it as we will be having a great time with addressing topics that will promote healthy life choices.In addition, I finally joined the myspace site. A site that I thought was quite annoying as my girls would spend what would seem like an eternity on this site. I would have to tell them to get off and do something smart like read a book or at least use the computer to research something intelligent. They would tell me that I am beasting (over reacting).Now to think that I am a part of the myspace site is hilarious........ I did explain to my girls that it was for business purposes and that I will not be entertaining friend requests from them or their friends. I just pray that I do not become consumed with the myspace hype. On the other hand, I hope it does not become a place where I forget to check in and update as needed. I am a hands on person - not a micro manager - I just like to ensure that my work is representative of me.Now here it is Monday again and I have a lot of work to do........... I am enjoying this journey - it's not all easy but it is certainly a great work in progress.
