Tips from FLOTUS on Leadership

Our First Lady Michelle Obama has done it again!  Every time she speaks she drops us knowledge to help us reflect our own way of thinking and actions! After watching the Democratic National Convention here is what I took away.

"He believes when you work hard and you cross the door of opportunity, don't slam it! Don't close the door behind you! You REACH BACK and bring others up! @MichelleObama

1. Leadership is 100% about creating new leaders. If you are at the top and love the feeling of being above your subordinates then your motives for leadership are off. Effective leaders lead because they want to create change, influence others to take action, and work their way to a position to challenge the same in others.

"Being President doesn't change who you are, it reveals who you are." @MichelleObama

2. Leadership is an internal expression of an inward ability. Leaders shouldn't become someone "new" once they get into their position because leadership is not about position. Leadership is about the ability to influence change on any level. It reveals who you are because it should be who you are.
michelle-obama-dnc-speech-ap-9-5-12.jpg

"That's the man I see in those quiet moments late at night, hunched over his desk, poring over the letters people have sent him," she said. "I see the concern in his eyes ... and I hear the determination in his voice as he tells me, 'You won't believe what these folks are going through, Michelle . it's not right. We've got to keep working to fix this. We've got so much more to do." She added: "I see how that's what drives Barack Obama every single day."

3. Leadership is about the drive! What fuels you to keep going even in difficult situations? Leaders have to have something to refresh their energy. They frequently revisit the reason for the cause. They hear the voices of the people they are working for and figure out solutions to fix them. Leaders are true problem solvers.

"In the end, for Barack, these issues aren't political. They're personal," she said.

4. Leaders have values. They add value to the issues they value! Simply put they stand for what they believe in.  It allows authenticity and a personal connection to be made.

Finding Your Lost Motivation

What do you do to re-energize when your spirits are down and you've lost motivation? You've got to do something when your spirits are low? So what can you do besides mope around in misery? Try these tips below!

  1. Write out 5 things you want to achieve.
  2. Next write out what difference will it make if you actually achieve this goal.
  3. Is there a tangible picture that you can find of what your achieved goal looks like? Go online and print it out. Tape it in a visible place like your refrigerator.
  4. Set deadlines for you goals.
  5. Make it visible.

Energized.jpg

While you're busy working find physical and mental ways to reenergize like:

1. Listening to inspirational music. I've literally had to create an entire CD for each goal. I have one for my non-profit with music all about being important and making a change. When I listen to it I don't only like the songs but the message moves me and reminds me why I'm working. When I start to feel tired I pick the best track and blast it!!

2. Workout. I know what you're thinking but you actually gain energy when you begin to move your muscles.

3. Drink water. Replenish and cleanse your body.

4. Get some sleep. Sometimes you can't worry about it, sleep on it and try it again the next day with a fresh approach.

5. De-stress with a massage. Nothing beats a relaxing message to take your mind off of your worries.

Hiring Vendors and Staying Sane

Got a special project, a special event?  Have you decided to hire some help?

10744091453?profile=originalYou will quickly discover that there are varying standards of excellence and performance.  Avoid drama trauma; do these 4 things.

  1. Clearly state the scope of work.  Make sure you thoroughly outline the areas the vendor will be responsible for.  This can serve as a guide for the work that will be completed and can also help in narrowing your search to those who have specific experience in these areas.

  2. Communicate expectations.  Openly share your thoughts and expectations of each section of the scope of work with the potential vendor so that there are no misunderstandings; everyone is on the same page.  Take a section/definition and ask the vendor, ‘What does this mean/look like to you?’  Clarify any differences and determine if you can comfortably continue with this vendor based on what you’re looking for and the outcome of this discussion.

  3. Ensure the person you’re hiring can actually do the work.   Not only should they be able to perform the tasks, but the work performance should be above par.  Sometimes you’ll come across those who say they can do a variety of things, but they may only be proficient in one or two areas.  Unless you’re hiring for an entry level, on-the-job training position, don’t hire a novice.Go beyond reference checks.  Both a Motel 6 and Ritz Carlton have a place for you to lay your head, but the experiences are totally different!  Ultimately, the outcome is a reflection of you, your business, and your brand. If the vendor is responsible for the overall look and feel, and the experience of the end user, make sure they can deliver.

  4. Make sure you are covered in the event of non performance.  After you’ve crossed the t’s, dotted the i’s, the final stroke is to make sure your contract with the vendor includes language that covers you in the event the vendor doesn’t perform.  Clearly lay out what will happen if the work is not completed per the written agreement and what recourse will be taken.

There you have it.  What have you done to successfully hire a vendor?

Fear or Victory, the Choice is Yours

erasing-fear-300x199.jpgIt doesn’t matter if you believe it or not, but if your focus is based around fear, you will not have victory in your life or business. Victory is defined as: An act of defeating an enemy or opponent in a battle, game, or other competition…

How do you plan to defeat fear and claim victory moving forward? I can certainly promise you it won’t be an easy task, however; it first starts with a simple decision. The choice is yours.

Fear or Victory…which do you choose?

As an entrepreneur, we cannot allow self-sabotaging beliefs to cloud our thinking, nor unintentional, yet premeditated defeats. Those “things” are better known as excuses.

Excuses are really fears we’ve determined to justify. (Tweet This)

Do you truly want to have a successful business you can run from home? Are you willing to give up some things to make it happen? Are you really ready for the changes you need to make?

Top 4 Businesses to Start in 2013

2013 is just around the corner. And as we approach this time to declare a “New Year, New You”, this is a great time to do something new, do something different, and actually take the steps to start a business. Contrary to popular belief, you do not have to have specific education or thousands of dollars to invest in a business that will thrive and last beyond the dreaded 3 year failure mark. The following 4 business types are all businesses that have been deemed the “top” businesses to start in 2013 as their industries are growing.

1. Organic Food- Perhaps with help from the FLOTUS Michelle Obama with her “Let’s Move” Campaign, organic food sales are rising. People are starting to care more about the quality of food they consume and prepare for their family. The organic food industry is a growing industry that will continue growing into 2013. If you are someone who loves organic food, good with creating recipes or interested in growing it, this would be a great industry in which to start a business. Get more information here about the certifications and accreditations needed to get started. ORGANIC FOOD CERTIFICATION

Average Start-Up Costs: $500-$1000

2. Cosmetics- Always a popular product, natural cosmetics are going to be big in 2013. Women... well, people are going away with Botox and chemical peels, etc. They are looking for more natural ways to maintain a youthful appearance. There are several ways you can start a cosmetics company:

A.You can join a company already established and be their walking advertisement by wearing and sharing their products. Companies like Mary Kay, Seacret, Xango and Rodan+Fields are reputable companies with proven natural products.

Average Start-Up Costs: $100 - $1000

B. You can create your own cosmetic products. Of course your investment will be much more, but at the end, the product will be your own brand. To start a cosmetic line of quality may average you $40,000 and more. Don’t get me wrong, there are places where you can start your own for much less but if you want to stay in business, the money is worth it or go with option number A. Start Your Own Cosmetic Line Option

Average Start-Up Costs: $40,000+

3. Ecommerce – Amazon.com, Etsy.com, Ebay.com, and Volusion.com are just a few great resources for selling products like clothing, jewelry, electronics, books, music, vintage stuff, etc. People sell all kinds of things through these resources. All you need is a camera, even cell phone, to take pictures of stuff you are selling and set it up.

Average Start-Up Costs: $0 - $100

4. Affiliate Marketing- According to CNBC is the “best online small business idea of 2013”. The affiliate, internet, network marketing business model will see an increase of business owners. Several reasons for this is because training is free and unlimited and there is a great potential to generate a substantial income with residual options (money that continues to generate even if you do not work that month). Best companies to start are companies just starting, that do not have a saturated field of marketers. You just need a computer and an out of the box product. New Millenium Business

Average Start-Up Costs: $25 - $200

Of course these are only a few options for businesses to start. There are plenty other and if you put forth hard work in anything it is bound to succeed. For help on deciding what type of business to start, more specific information about the industries above, or how to expand your current business, Sign Here to receive a free consultation. Trying something new can be scary but when you have a Success Teacher by your side, that makes it so much easier. Happy New Year and make 2013 a "Go Get It" year!

Never What it Seems is the story of Dee Wellington and AJ Madison, two women who were born in Chicago, and much like the city; their lives are anything, but ordinary. Dee grew up in a dysfunctional household that by today’s standards would be considered completely ‘normal’. Trying to cope with life’s complexities, Dee contributes all of life’s changes to God’s will. Throughout the changes in her life, she resists the urge to disrupt the balance of things unless she really has to.
On the other hand, there is AJ Madison who is a rambunctious, intelligent, and outgoing character who lives by her own standards and believes that you get what you give. Both, Dee and AJ grew-up trying to maneuver in systems created to breakdown the human spirit. Readers will find a familiarity in their struggles, their desires, and their will to overcome.

Reader's Reviews:

“I’m reading ‘Never What it Seems.’ It’s a page turner. I found myself wanting to find out what happened next as I ended each chapter. I’m on chapter 48 (pretty good for a day and a half)…where the girls' former loves have now re-entered their lives. The story line is impeccable, well-written, and I am suggesting this book to all of my friends and family who loves to read. I’m going to read this book again.” –JoMonique Whiteside

“’Never What it Seems’ is truly never what it seems. I found myself drawn into the story. I couldn’t put it down! The chain of events continued to grab me. The author is very consistent about several things, but what warms you the most is that the two main characters, Dee & AJ, are amazingly strong. I love and admire their courage. The author displays a relationship of real unconditional friendship between these ladies - such a relationship rarely seen or experienced today; the one that ultimately facilitates their success. This is an awesome start for a first novel. I so look forward to the next!” – LaKessa Murphy

"I've just gotten back to Chicago and while I was away I completed 'Never What it Seems'. All I can say is SUPERB, EXCELLENT, and OUTSTANDING! That book was one of the best books I've ever read and I'm encouraging everyone I know to get a copy. Let me tell you, it had me on the edge of my seat from beginning to end. This is definitely a book for everyone, so check it out!!! That being said, I have got to get a copy of 'Autumn Leaves', if it is anything like 'Never What it Seems.'" - Ana Mar'e (Pink Diamond, Inc.)

"I think this book is phenomenal. It takes us into the lives of two young women that basically go through what all women experience growing up in this day and age from childhood to adulthood. It also points out that not all men are deceiving, but willing to take chances when it comes to true love. It was wonderfully written, and I look forward to the next novel witten by Diane Martin. " - Marjorie Billenger
"Diane Martin's vividly, entertaining tale of friendship between two women was a true testimony of trial and triumph. An anthem for every woman who has ever loved, lost, and regained the true meaning of an unedifying spirit of hope. For every page read, I was drawn deeper and deeper until I was left wanting more." - Elise Burkes

"Girl, let me tell you! I finished reading your book earlier today and it was excellent! Your book was a trip. Let me just say that the ending was not what I expected. I was out done! Your novel [Never What it Seems] was a well written and a very intriguing piece or work [written] by a vivid and creative mind! Congratulations and much success on all of your endeavors to come!" - Michelle Moorer (Author of Shhh...Don't Tell)

"I purchased your book and once I completed it…WOW! This was a great book and I couldn’t put it down until I finished it. I passed the book on to my daughter-in-law and she thought the same thing. Keep up the good work. I’ll be looking for more to come.” -Beverly Price
