Skin (41)

Sigh. The silent expression given after looking over those fun, summer pictures taken of you in your twenties.  Those were the days - sun, fun, laughter and beautiful skin happily displayed under shorts and sleeveless tops. “When did my youthful glow disappear?”  As the body ages, cellular regeneration slows down, and skin begins to act differently, yielding dark spots, wrinkles, and rough, cracked skin.  Thankfully, plenty of wholesome products from nature can help you maintain your beautiful skin, and this puts you on the winning side - allowing you to grow older gracefully.

You truly are what you eat, therefore an adequate intake of water and nourishing foods work internally and the epidermis benefits from those positive effects.

In addition to eating and drinking mindfully, consistently use these three topical steps to keep your body’s largest organ conditioned, hydrated, and have you on your way to celebrating the reappearance of that youthful glow:

First, cleanse the skin using soap or body wash with rich emollients, such as raw butters and plant/fruit oils. The hydration process begins when water comes in contact with the skin, and the wholesome emollients seal moisture into the skin.  Forgo products with harsh surfactants, such as sodium lauryl sulfate. They strip the natural oils from the skin, and hinders the goal.

Next, slough off dead skin cells using salt or sugar scrubs, clays, or a natural fiber sponge.  Exfoliation is one of the most skipped steps in bath and body care, but is necessary for a radiant hue. Exfoliating the skin 2-3 times a week, softens rough skin, lightens hyper-pigmented spots, and allows for better absorption of other bath and body care products.

Lastly, apply moisturizers with liquid content and emollients (lotion/cream) to maintain skin hydration and soft skin throughout the day.  Or use emollients (no water content) such as body butters and body balms for sealing in moisture after showering, softening rough skin, and protecting the skin. Petroleum jelly is an emollient, however, it does not allow the skin to breathe as well as plant/fruit-based emollients.

Add these simple solutions to your bath and body care regimen, and you can expect that youthful glow to reappear. Say, “Good-bye” to sigh and hello to shorts, racerback tanks and short maxi dresses.

The winter months can be so unkind to your skin - wrecking havoc by turning hydrated skin into parched skin.  With the dry, cold air outside beating at your skin, cranked up heat indoors pulling moisture out of your skin, there seems to be no rescue for your epidermis.  Lost cause?  Absolutely not.  You just have to make a few adjustments to your winter bath and body care routine:

Step 1: Use a gentle grime fighter that won't strip your skin of its natural, protective oils, and that will also add to the conditioning of your skin.

Organic Love Body WashA pure organic, castile body wash! Lather up in goodness of sunflower oil, coconut oil, palm kernel oil, and glycerin! Organic Love is enriched with African Black Soap and Green Leaf Papaya to eat up those dead skin cells!

Step 2: No more than 3 times a week, your skin should receive some TLC with a scrub/polish.  Exfoliating eliminates dead skin (keratin) sitting on the surface, removes impurities from the pores,  and leaves behind smooth, soft skin.

Almond Whipped Cream ScrubA creamy body wash and exotic sugar scrub, with Sweet Almond oil to boot. Pick up your favorite sponge or puff and cleanse, exfoliate, moisturize, and fragrance your body!

Sweet Raw Sugar Honey PolishA skin delicious blend of golden crystals, for banishing dead skin; pure plant oils effective for mature skin; rich humectants for protecting the skin; and honey to boot.

Step 3: Add an oil treatment to your bath & body routine. Topping the epidermis off with wholesome oils (emollient) is the best way to seal in moisture.

MarinadeAn after-bath oil, that is great for those on-the-go days. Seal in the moisture after showering, by spritzing on this oil-free Shea Butter oil blend.

Pure Body BalmA head-to-toe deep moisturizing balm, created for those women who need a bit more TLC for their scalp and body.  Pure Body Balm rejeuvenates dehydrated skin, works as a protective barrier, and is gentle on sensitive skin.

Two weeks ago, in the HyperPigmentation post, I mentioned that the increase of melanin in my skin is a gem, because one of the gifts is slowing down the process of skin aging.  Well I'm certainly not taking that for granted.  Two areas that I give extra TLC to are my elbows and knees.  It's possible that those with an increase in melanin can get by without as much concern, care, and adverse effects to those areas, than those with less melanin.  But why neglect something that's so easy to take care of?  When I was a young child and teenager, I remember admiring my mother's legs--so beautiful and fit.  She is now in her 60's, and I am still admiring them.  Her youthful knees look so good in a pair of shorts.

Skin on elbows and knees naturally tend to be dry, due to the lack of oil glands in those areas.  Being used more than other body parts, daily, the elbows and knees become flaky, chapped, rough, and scaly.  With the warm weather gracing you with its presence, make sure your elbows and knees are making a healthy appearance.

327579-38318-23.jpg

source: buzzle.com

Dry and discolored skin on elbows and knees, can usually be repaired with these two steps:

  • Exfoliation- Help in the regeneration of new, healthy skin, by gently removing dead skin cells.  Do this 2-3 times a week.
  • Moisturize- If you are using a body polish in step #1, then you are already sealing in moisture.  However, your elbows and knees will not object to adding a bit more lotion or emollient.   Moisturizing right after a bath or shower is best (45-minute window).   Remember, when you are giving that bit of TLC to your hands, feet, and neck at bedtime....love to knees and elbows, too.

If dry, rough elbows and knees are a problem for you, try the tips above.  You will notice a difference.

Don't have those problems?  Good.  Add the tips above to your bath & body regimen, and continue to have healthy looking elbows and knees.

I love my dark chocolate skin!  Being one of my favorite physical attributes, my skin motivates me to remain consistent with its regimen--water intake; healthy eating; exercise; giving special attention to pimples, burns, blisters; and taking preventive measures before spending major time in the sun (which I love).  Truly, the increase of melanin, in my skin, is a gift-- protection from sunlight, and it slows down the process of skin aging. But, like many with this gift, irregular pigmentation can be an issue.  Hyperpigmentation.

Hyperpigmentation

The effect of an increase in melanin, the substance in the body that is responsible for color.

327579-38318-23.jpg

source:buzzle.com

There are several causes for hyperpigmentation (pregnancy, antibiotics, illness, etc.), but exposure to sunlight is the major one.  Let's say you have a pimple that accidentally gets ruptured (mmhmm, stop popping those pimples), you go out for a day in the sun, the next day, you notice a dark spot were the pimple use to be.  Maybe you already have dark patches on your skin, and after spending a day out in the sun, those patches have become even darker.  Why is that?  Melanin protects your skin from the overexposure of sunlight, but in order to do that, it has to absorb the sun's harmful ultraviolet rays.  Hence, dark spots/darker patches.

When speaking of irregular pigmentation, many solely reference the face as the victim.  The face is the most exposed area on the body, but hyperpigmentation happens all over. With warm weather returning, arms and legs are anxious to make their appearance.  Be sure you're ready to protect your bronzy glow.

Cleansing- To aid your skin in regenerating pigment due to skin damage (blisters, burns, skin infections), use cleansers such as Palm Oil SoapOrganic Love, and Specialty Bar Soap, twice a day.  These cleansers are high in vitamins, vegetable oils, and raw butter.

Exfoliate- For skin cell regeneration, and a youthful glow, don't forget to exfoliate.  This time of year calls for scrubs that are fine in texture.  Plus, it's spring/summer time, so get something fun!  Sugar!  Use Mojito Sugar Smoother, or any of the DECADENCE Layered Sugar Scrubs to gently remove dead skin, for a healthy-skin-glow, and for even skin tone.

Moisturize- For a topical shade use MarinadeWhip Cream Body Lotion*, Lush Body ButterMojito Body SpreadTantouchthis Body Spread*, and Matcha Body Spread.  These super emollients contain vegetable/fruit oils, and raw butters that help in defending your skin against UV rays.  They are light in weight, making them excellent for warm weather jaunts.

We're not just about making you smell good--live good. feel good. smell good.™

Product Perks

  • *Whip Cream Body Lotion makes a great after-sun product.  It contains soothing whole leaf aloe vera concentrate.
  • *Tantouchthis Body Spread is known to give bronzy, sun-kissed skin.

Plan on having long park days or beach fun this year?  Sunscreen is recommended for those with an increase of melanin in their skin.

The Skinny on Skincare: Super foods

superfoods%20sign.jpg

Super foods is the name given to a diverse group of foods found in nature. They are loaded with antioxidants, which has the ability to get rid of free radicals, resulting in less disease, great skin and longer life.
Super foods can be found in, fruits, herbs, dark green leafy veggies and sea weed. Of course, by no means should you rely solely on these foods for all the nutrients that your body needs. Incorporating them in your diet, regularly, will help in the fight against disease and premature aging. In addition, it won't hurt to use skin care products that contain super food extracts because, when applied directly to the skin, the antioxidants are readily absorbed into the cells.
Examples of super foods include
  • strawberries
  • gogi berries also called wolfberry
  • acai
  • spurilina
  • beans
  • pomegranate
  • blueberries
  • oats
  • oranges
  • broccoli
  • soy
  • spinach
  • salmon

5 Bad Skin Habits

During the winter months skin care becomes a number one priority. The change in the weather combined with dry winter air causes drying and discoloration to the skin, which can ruin your complete look. Here are 5 habits that will cause even more damage to your skin. If you change these 5 bad skin habits with a combination of a daily skin regiment then you will be on the road to beautiful skin. For more information, you can visit www.marykay.com/imaginebeauty or send all questions to imaginebeauty@marykay.com.5 Bad Skin Habits1. Choosing the wrong cleanser- This is the worst mistake that a person can make when it comes to skin care. Your cleanser is as unique as your skin, and you should look at it that way. Mary Kay offers many varieties of cleansers for your age and skin type. For more information about cleansers and skin types visit www.marykay.com/imaginebeauty.2. Over exfoliating- What a lot of people don’t realize is that there is a such thing as too clean. Over exfoliating strips your skin of necessary nutrients, and leaves your face looking dull, dry, and life-less. Avoid exfoliating your skin as part of your daily regiment and instead just do it every other day. Try Mary Kay’s Microdermabrasion set for the perfect exfoliation product(www.marykay.com/imaginebeauty).3. Over moisturizing- You wouldn’t put too much oil in your car would you? Over moisturizing your skin causes clogged pores that can cause those little nasty bumps that we hate to see. You must know your skin type in order to know how often you should apply moisturizer on your face, but generally speaking you should only apply your moisturizer after you wash your face. You should also make sure that you are using a moisturizer that will last all day instead of wearing off in a few hours leaving you with that dry feeling. And never ever use regular body lotion on your face, it’s too heavy for the skin and weighs it down.4. Not washing your face before you go to bed- Going to sleep with make-up and dirt on your face is a big skin care no-no. You must give your skin a chance to breath without concealers and foundations, also your skin is exposed to so many disgusting things( smoke, pollution, and dirt) who wants to let that sit on their face all night seeping into your pores. Yuck. Wash your face with a cleanser that is fit for your skin type. For cleanser options visit www.marykay.com/imaginebeauty.5. Wearing old make-up- Old make-up does to the skin what old milk does to your body. Got the picture? Old make-up is bad news for the skin so recycle your old make-up and restock them often. For a list of common expiration dates for most cosmetics send an email to imaginebeauty@marykay.com.So now you are on your way to healthier skin any time of year. DIRTY MOUTH… CLEAN IT UP

Traditional Soap vs. Glycerin Soap

Remember when they use to say “wash your mouth out with soap.” Did anyone ever stop to think that washing someone’s mouth out with soap would be harmful to them? Traditional soap (a regular bar of soap, ie Dove, Dial and Irish Spring) have been around for along time; it contains harsh chemicals that are dangerous. These chemicals include: DEA, Isopropyl Alcohol, BHT and Triclosan (commonly found in anti-bacteria soap). When using traditional soap for a long period of time it can cause the skin to itch, to become dry and produce a rash. Now, who would want “that” (traditional soap) in their mouths.

Have you ever took a bath or shower, dried off and didn’t apply any lotions? Due to you having to rush out the door for school/work and a hour later looked down and see your legs have ashed (dry flakes of skin on your legs). Unlike traditional soap, glycerin soaphas ingredients in it to helps to moisturize the skin as well has help pre-existing skin condition to calm the skin down. In addition, removing dryness and the itchy rash.

Eco-friendly Soap

Glycerin is a eco-friendly soap it can be used and is used in many different things in shampoo‘s, conditioners and lotions. (It’s water soluble and alcohol soluble; but soap isn‘t biodegradible). It’s also environmentally safe because it dissolves. Traditional soap does dissolve but after it does it leaves harmful bacteria in your water, which goes back into the environment.

Are You Getting Your Monies Worth?

A lot of manufactures put glycerin in your body lotion and facial cream because of it‘s solubility. They charge you a lot more money for the small amount of glycerinthey put in your lotions and facial creams. If you don’t believe me than do this, stop reading right now and go pick up any lotion in your home and you will find that it has glycerin in it because it is a moisturizing ingredient.

Handmade glycerin soaps are far better than traditional soaps because it has glycerin in it and it has other ingredients that help your skin feel smooth and silky (that’s why when you touch glycerin soap it feels silky). You are getting more, than your monies worth with handmade glycerin soapthan with traditional soap

Traditional or Handmade Soap You Decide

Traditional soap is the oldest cleaner known to man. It is made by a chemical process is called saponification this is the chemical reaction which produces soap (which produces a hard bar of soap that is cheap and plentiful). Glycerin is produced during saponification but is extracted from traditional soap. Glycerin which is a humectants that absorbs moisture from the air and binds the moisture to your skin. With daily use glycerin soap will make your skin soft and smooth. It’s sensitive, so it can be used on both children and adults.

Handmade glycerin soap carries a lot of healing properties for those that may have skin problems (sensitive skinie. Eczema, Psoriasis) you will find relief with handmade soaps. Get your Vitamin D!

Vitamin D is necessary for the body to absorb calcium, which is necessary for bone growth and continued strength. The body also needs adequate levels of vitamin D to ensure proper function of the immune system and the neuromuscular system. Vitamin D deficiency in the body can lead to soft and/or fragile bones. In some recent studies, vitamin D supplementation may be helpful in treating cancer, depression, autism and other maladies.

Vitamin D can be derived naturally from the sun. For the average person, spending as much at 10 to 20 minutes in the sun at least three times a week will fulfill their vitamin D requirements. Keep in mind that people with darker skin need more sun exposure because the melanin in the skin tends to block vitamin D absorption. In addition, those who live in an area which is north of Columbia, South Carolina’s latitude may not be exposed to enough sun during the winter months and may require supplementation.

Rutgers University, with campuses in New Brunswick and Newark, New Jersey is conducting an ongoing study in regards to how supplementation of vitamin D can halt and/or decrease bone loss in post-menopausal women who are dieting. Furthermore, recent studies have shown that keeping sufficient levels of vitamin D may aid in weight loss.

Even though vitamin D supplements may keep the body healthy and may be natural, more does not always mean better. An overdose of vitamin D may cause kidney damage, high blood pressure and heart arrhythmia. If you suspect that you may have a vitamin D deficiency, check with your doctor or other medical professional to get an official diagnosis.

The Bare Mineral

Many women with dark ethnic skin tones have been concerned about their skin turning ashy when they use mineral cosmetics. This has been expressed to me on more than one occasion so I decided it was probably time to explain exactly why this happens with some mineral makeup, but not with all minerals. Many also insist it is linked totally to the use of Titanium Dioxide in the products. This is only true to a degree.

Titanium Dioxide, when used in high concentrations, can cause an ashy appearance to dark skin since it is considered a pigment for lightening shades. It also has excellent light refracting properties only surpassed by diamonds, giving a brighter appearance to the face. However, not all minerals use this ingredient in high concentrations even if you see it as the first ingredient on the list. It may only be at a 5-25% concentration in the overall formula. If an ingredient list is primarily Titanium Dioxide, Zinc Oxide, Iron Oxides and Mica, odds are this would be a formula that can cause considerable problems for turning dark skin gray or ashy.

A high quality blend of minerals and / or botanicals should readily melt with any skin tone if the ratios are put into proper proportion and Titanium is utilized more as a sunscreen component rather than a pigment for changing depth of shades. Different mineral makeup blends can achieve the lightening effects on pigments without it causing a white-out effect. Our blends of dark mineral foundation shades melt with your skin tone and the effect is the same for Delicate Rose Petal™, Dewy Rose Petal™ and Velvet Rose Petal™.

Another reason you may also appear ashy or gray is you are choosing the incorrect shade for your skin tone. If you should have a lot of golden, yellow or red in your skin using a shade that is geared toward neutrals, dark olive or cool chocolate (blue/red skin tones) will definitely create an ashy / gray appearance to the skin. So what you may have once been blaming on Titanium Dioxide, may actually be caused by too cool of a shade for your color. Also some companies may use black oxide in excess to darken shades and this will actually gray the shade instead of darkening it.

One other likely reason, and one that many dark skinned women don’t wish to accept at times, is heredity can give you a greenish / yellow cast to your face. This is your natural skin tone and is usually indicative of Olive skin. If you stray too far from this natural skin tone by trying to infuse too much red to counteract the yellow / greenish cast, you will appear as though you are wearing the wrong shade and can look pasty and ashy. Try to enhance your natural skin tone since this will look best on you. Other shading options are available through blush and bronzer if you wish to perk up a certain skin tone. A mineral makeup foundation done properly that truly matches and mirrors your natural skin will enhance it and you will suddenly appreciate what you were blessed with since your face will glow with the correct shade using a premium mineral makeup.

Another variation; dark skinned women wanting to counteract the deep reds they have in their skin for more of a golden yellow. Yet again, covering the deep reds that you possess naturally due to the depth of color you have, this will make you look like you are wearing the wrong shade. Too much yellow on a deep reddish brown skin will give you an unnatural appearance.

The best way to avoid a problem is to always try samples and make sure you purchase those in the warm deep golden / red tones if you have a reddish brown to caramel skin, or maybe try a more neutral tone to mix to adjust shade color or to enhance a true Olive skin. Sometimes unless the blue / red skin tone is quite obvious such in very dark skin tones, you may just not realize what you are doing to your skin with the incorrect shading. Sending a photo of yourself in natural daylight which includes face, shoulder, and neck and chest area to Sterling Minerals™ is always helpful so that I or one of my staff may further assist you in getting you close to a skin tone match with minimal sampling. You can send your photo to us at info@sterlingminerals.com.

How many of you take time for YOURSELF? I have watched enough Oprah shows to know that if you don't take care of yourself no one else will. You will be unhappy, grumpy, and your friends will be begging you to see a shrink. If anyone knows it's me. A child with autism, and epilepsy; family dysfunction, unsuccesful relationships, death of close friends and family members, etc...I don't feel like a victim, so don't go poor Rierie, just sharing!!! I used to run on empty, out of gas; that was my normalcy so to speak, then one day I crashed. I wanted to crawl into a whole and never come out. God's grace saved me. There are a few things that I cannot live without nowadays. I try to feed my mind, my body, my spirit, as much as I can; it's all connected, so why not take care of the whole package!!!

The Mind
6a00cdf39c677acb8f00d4143c67bc3c7f-500pi.jpgWhewwww, "she" can chatter all day long; from what you need to do right now, what you didn't do yesterday, how many things you have to get done nowwww. "She" will keep you up at night, and before you know it, you are on Ambien. So I brain drain.
-Brain drain: write down a list of everything you need to do on a notepad, from grocery store to going to the bank to chaperoning your kids next field trip.
-Stop being negative; I am sure you already know this, whatever you focus on expands, if you focus on negativity, what's wrong in your life, you will get more of it.
-Let your mind float freely. Imagine that you have no limitations. Imagine that you have all the time, money, resources, intelligence, education, experience and all the contacts in the world. Imagine that you could do, be or have anything in your life. What if you had no fear of failure at all?
-Your most important goals/intentions must be YOURS. Not your spouse's, your child's, your employer's, your mother's, your sister's....
-Write your intentions in positive terms, avoid saying "I will not be. Your subconscious mind is very specific and it doesn't judge, it will attract like a magnet whatever you focus on.
If you've never read 'The Power Of Your Subconscious Mind", pick up a copy, a great book....I have 2 copies, dog-eared to the 10th power lol.

The Body
If you are not kind to it now, it will be hostile to you later.
HUK+Cover-1.png
-Don't diet, diets make you cranky, eat whole foods; diet=die, I want to live lol. I am sure you do too. God gave us whole foods for a reason, ditch those frozen meals, canned goods, fat free this and that. Eat grass fed beef, organic chicken, wild caught fishes; not farm-raised, organic fruits, and veggies. Use olive oil, and coconut oil. Do your research on canola oil, and soy (disturbing). Cut out sugar, drink more water. I can't get down with eggs beaters in a carton box, come on now.....you get the jist. Check out this book, "Healthy Urban Kitchen", the author, Antonio is on to something....
-Move it; you don't have to be a slave to the treadmill, hike, take a walk with your dog, take your kids or grandkids to the park and become one of them, salsa dance (my faaaavorite woo hoo).
Check out these two amazing salsa teachers; they offer classes that will have you sweating and cheering; Myriam Soavinzara and "Tony "El Pana". You will be sweating to a slimmer you while having fun...
-Treat yourself to a massage, mani-pedi, get a facial, plan a get away, put on lipgloss, reconnect with a long time friend over a great glass of wine, take on golf.... :-)

The Spirit
We are spiritual beings having a human experience, that's what I believe, we are more than this body. Believe in a Higher Power, whatever it may be for you, I am a God fanatic, and lover ♡
-Prayers work, enough said.
Getting in the Gap: Making Conscious Contact with God Through Meditation (Book with CD)-Meditate, "Be still, and know that I am God" (Psalm 46:10). Look up Japa meditation if you are having a hard time shutting down your mind. It's helped me a lot. You can check out Dr. Wayne Dyer's book "Getting in the gap".
-Surrender, this is now a daily practice of mine, it has truly become a habit. To surrender means to yield, to relinquish control over. When we surrender to God, we are simply acknowledging that what we "own" actually belongs to Him. He is the giver of all good things. By surrendering to God, we admit that He is ultimately in control of everything, including our present circumstances. Let Go, let God.
-Forgive someone; Love someone; Compliment someone and mean it, say Thank You.
-Be grateful; there are thousands of things to be grateful for on a regular basis, no matter how difficult things may seem. "When you change the way you look at things, the things you look at change". Dr. Wayne Dyer

Natural Remedies for Acne and Facial Blemishes

Many individuals have suffered from acne at one time or another in their lives. It may lessen or worsen with the seasons, diet or with hormonal changes in the body. While it is not a
life-threatening condition, many who deal with acne may feel a loss of self-esteem, especially if the acne is severe or leaves behind scarring. The acne may also be painfully inflamed or sore.

Certainly, the shelves are full of medications especially formulated for the elimination of acne, but these medications may cause dry, flaky skin and may also aggravate the condition. Therefore, natural cures for acne may be the first line of defense because they can be less harsh on the
skin.

Mix equal parts of fresh lime juice and milk and use a cloth or cotton ball to apply the resulting mixture to the inflamed areas. Let sit for 15-20 minutes, then rinse clean.

Yogurt and oatmeal make a wonderful acne healing mask for the face. The yogurt’s lactic acid content can serve to soothe the skin, reducing inflammation and cleansing pores. Oatmeal can
soothe irritation and reduce inflammation also. Mix plain yogurt with enough finely ground oatmeal to make a paste. Apply the mask to a clean, dry face and let sit for about 15 minutes. Rinse gently with warm water and pat dry. If necessary, apply a light oil such as olive or sunflower oil to moisturize your face.

Ripe tomatoes are a natural astringent for the face and are great for oily skin. Simply cut a ripe tomato in half and apply to the acne areas. Leave the juice for about 20 minutes, then rinse
clean. You may also use tomato paste for easier application.

Please remember to do a skin patch test before applying any of these recipes to your skin and/or face.
