Message for all the moms and dads and kids gearing up for spring cleaning rituals because, Spring is just around the corner. What is a Self Caring Lifestyle?Self Care is exactly what it sounds like. It is the caring for self. It's not being selfish. It's being aware of the fact that you can't give what you don't have. I put all my time and effort into my children and my family that I took no time to just work on me. When you wash your hair, does it seem really dry and brittle? Have you ever avoided washing your hair for weeks at a time, some of us for months, because you just knew it was going to take a few days for your hair to come back to life; to soften up or feel moisturized?Well, the reason for the excessive dryness is that washing the hair with certain shampoos strips it of all its moisture because of the "bad ingredients" the majority of shampoos contain. Further damage is actually being done to the hair if you "repeat" as the bottle suggests.Approximately 90% of all shampoos contain Sodium Laureth Sulphate (SLES), and Sodium Lauryl Sulphates (SLS), which can be found in common household detergents such as dishwashing liquids, hand soap, washing powder, and many others. These ingredients function is to create foaming action. I use to think that the more suds, the better the shampoo was working, when actually this is just a myth. SLS and SLES may lead to deficient hair property, corroded hair follicles and inhibited hair growth, contributing to hair loss.SLS and SLES are possibly two of the most dangerous ingredients in personal care products and according to American College of Toxicology. Both SLS and SLES can cause malformation in children's eyes. Other research has indicated SLS may be damaging to the immune system, especially within the skin.I know 90% is a huge number of shampoos that you must stay away from, but that still leave 10% and fortunately you only need one or two good ones. Any local health food store will have a wide variety of different shampoos you can use. I didn’t really make any New Year’s resolutions, but I did set a goal for my hair for this year. I am going on an exciting vacation in July and I want my hair to be at its absolute best. For the first couple of years of my hair journey, I took impeccable care of my hair. I washed, deep conditioned it and twisted it faithfully. I experienced growth OUT OF THIS WORLD. My hair grew longer in two years than it had ever grown during my lifetime. Since I’ve become and entrepreneur and I pretty much working around the clock, I’ve neglected my own hair terribly. I’ve gone from washing it weekly to every other week! Sometimes it gets deep conditioned, sometimes it doesn’t. I use to take time to separate my hair before washing it to avoid the dreadful detangling process, now I just jump in the shower, wash and go! Before I go any further I would like to take this moment to apologize to my lovely tresses and to tell them that I do love them and I am begging for their forgiveness! Fortunately my hair didn’t get too damaged because it was in such great condition to start, but I am looking to gain 4” of new growth (trimming 1” so ending with about 3”) by July. Traction Alopecia, a hair loss condition caused by constant pulling or tension over a long period generally occurs in persons who wears tight braids, especially "cornrows" that lead to high tension, pulling and breakage of hair. This condition can lead to temporary or permanent hair loss due to damage to the hair follicles. This condition is most common in African-American women and men who braid their hair too tightly, it is reversible if diagnosed early on and the abuse stops. In Traction Alopecia, hair loss is often in the frontal and temporal regions, when the hair is constantly pulled back in a ponytail, bun or cornrows. Although, it can also appear where ever the hair is pulled to tightly; for example in the areas were plaits or cornrows are tight. Traction Alopecia can also occur due to over processing the hair with dyes and relaxers, so it’s imperative to follow instructions closely and to do a strand test to make sure the hair is strong enough to withstand these types of treatments. The obvious way to stop traction and traumatic alopecia is by wearing styles that aren’t too tight and be sure to switch up your hair style. Do not be afraid to stop your braider if they are pulling the hair too tightly and again, be mindful of the chemicals you are having applied or are applying to your hair. Alopecia is detecting it early. Hair styles that put unnecessary strain on the hair root must be changed for "looser, gentler hair style. Unfortunately, no medical treatment is available to reverse late-stage traction alopecia. When shopping for personal care products, there is an amazing array of bath and body products for your choosing. The labels scream "organic", "natural", "made with organic ingredients" and the like. You certainly want to choose the best for your health and your family's health, so your question may be, "What's the difference?" Read on for the facts about organic body products.1. The FDA (Federal Department of Agriculture) does not regulate or define the term "organic" in reference to personal body care products. In other words, the government does not certify organic body care products as "officially organic" but they do regulate the ingredients that are contained within that body product.2. In order to be certified organic, the product must be made up of organic agricultural ingredients (such as cocoa butter, shea butter, herbs and oils). In addition, the way in which the ingredients are produced, the handlers of these ingredients and manufacturer of the final product must be certified by an organic certifying agent who is USDA accredited. (Water and salt are excluded from the ingredients.)There are several levels of certification for these organic body products:4. A product which is labeled as "100 percent organic" indicates that the product includes only organically produced ingredients. These products carry a USDA Organic Seal and display the certifying agent's name and address.5. A product which is labeled "organic" should contain at least 95% organic ingredients and the remaining percentage of the ingredients must be on the approved National List of approved substances organic products. These organic body products will display the USDA organic seal as well as the certifying agent's name and address.6. "Made with organic ingredients" indicates that the particular product contains at least 70% organic ingredients. These products cannot carry the USDA organic seal but must display the certifying agent's name and address.7. An "organic body product" with less than 70% organic ingredients cannot use the term "organic" on the main label. They should not carry the USDA seal, nor the certifying agent's name/address.Understand that while the USDA does regulate agricultural ingredients that go into the organic body products, they do not regulate and have no authority over the labeling or production of products that do not utilized agricultural ingredients. Which basically means if that mascara you're buying claims to be "organic" it's most likely is not. As I wrote in a previous post, I've started a new blog that is connected with my store.
