Networking to Win

For some of us it is hard to meet and speak with people we don't know. It can be very difficult to strike up a conversation without running the other person when networking. Here are a few tips to get you started. Master the art of small talk. Always have objectives and common interest. Once you've established your objective and/or common interest, make sure that you keep your target engaged in the conversation. Ask questions about their business. What kinds of services are offered? Who is the targeted market for their business? You may be able to help each other and form a connection. Exchange information and follow up. Following up can be the beginning of building and possibly maintaining a business contact.Creating an elevator speech makes for a good introduction. Come up with a creative way to say what you do without saying your title or the name of your company in 30 seconds. This will create an automatic interest from the person you are speaking.5 key questions you may want to ask yourself when networking.1. Who is already in my corner?2. What have the done for me?3. What have I done for them?4. How do I intend to keep them in my corner?5. What do I hope to gain from them?

I am a passionate believer in the power of social networking for small business owners. I have spoken many times at conferences and teleseminars about small business owners can use Twitter to create relationships and expand their sphere of influence. One of the things I notice in my travels is that there is a misplaced reliance on Twitter as a marketing tool. If I had a dime for every time a business owner told me that he or she had not blogged in months because they had been spending all of their social time on Twitter, I think I'd be rich.Twitter Is Not A PanaceaAs good as Twitter is, it is not a panacea. Twitter will not swoop into your business and fix problems that are already there. For example, if you do not already have a blog, Twitter will be of little use to you. If you do not have or do not want to have genuine relationships with other small business owners, Twitter will be no use to you. And if your website is a messy collection of blurry photos and spelling and grammatical errors, Twitter will not only be useless to you, but it could also actually hurt your business.Neither Twitter nor any other social media tool owned by a third party should form the platform for your marketing outreach. The core of your marketing strategy should be supported by content that you own and control: your e-commerce site, business card, email newsletter, brochures, blog, podcasts, etc.Twitter Cannot Save A Lousy Marketing PlanTwitter should supplement a marketing machine that already works reasonably well on its own. While Twitter is no substitute for an innovative, attention grabbing, system that markets a fabulous product, it does a heckuva job at supplementing a system that is already getting results. Twitter is like cake frosting. It's useless unless there's a cake to frost. But put it on top of a rich and scrumptious slice of cake and it's hmm hmm good for you and your customers.Question: Are you perplexed by Twitter and how it can possibly work for your business? If so, check for holes in your existing marketing armor and plug them up. Chances are that, when you do, Twitter will take on a whole new meaning for your business. What do you think? I'd love to hear your comments, experiences and even questions on this topic in the comments section below.

"Be as proud of your race today as our fathers were in days of yore (long ago). We have beautiful history, and we shall create another in the future that will astonish the world." Marcus GarveyI love these words from Brother Garvey that he spoke almost 100 years ago. Isn't it funny how cycles repeat themselves? Do you think that Bro. Garvey, Malcolm or Dr. King ever envisioned a Black family in the White House? So taking that in consideration and the visionary words of Bro Garvey, what can we do in 2009 to help his vision of Black pride, unity and economic empowerment come to an even higher level of fruition? We can expand on Bro Garvey's vision of uniting more Black Consumers with Black Businesses. We need production facilities owned and operated by Black people! To produce the wonderful bath, body, beauty products, clothing, computers, CDs/DVDs, etc. We need to search for a Black owned business for our everyday products and services first, before we shop at the Big Box or other retail stores. Then we need a distribution operation to get these products made by Black entrepreneurs to the Black consumers and Black retail establishments! After that we need more Black financial institutions. I personally have both my personal and business account with a Black owned bank. We can take the Black Wall Street (Tulsa, Oklahoma) to a global level and create hundreds even thousands of self-sufficient Black communities around the world. With any major change in society, it starts with a handful of people with a united vision. Those willing to make the vision into a reality...these are true visionaries. Those willing to accept that everyone they talk to will not accept this idea of change...many will take the wait and see attitude. Let me wait and see if you can do this before I step out and try it. But there will be many others who see the big picture and come on board who are ready, willing and able to help do what is needed. So if you have seen or heard any of my previous blogs, you know that I am actively pursuing to fulfill Bro Garvey’s dream. I buy Black as much as possible. I let others know about other Black businesses. My husband and I even gave away 25-second commercials on our radio show last year, so that our listeners would know where to find Black businesses in my area to support. You are receiving this message because of the internet, which is one of the most powerful resources on the planet that we can use to make all of this happen. There is a powerful video that I hope you can take the time to watch at www.blackbusinessnetwork.com/TeamDollar that starts off with a phenomenal presentation of how our people dominate every single field we enter, sports, entertainment/music and now is our time to dominate in the field of business like never before. Trust me this video will blow you away and inspire you to do what you need to do for your business, your family and your community!Note: You may have to enter the site by joining as a general member to watch the video. Just as the Power of the Internet took the world by storm, so will the Power of Social Networking for Women!Social Networks allow women to build alliances, connect with women they normally would not have the opportunity to meet and share information about their services and products. Here are 3 ways to start building solid relationships with businesswomen online:1. Brand yourself as an expert. Stick with a particular niche or subject as you build your online reputation. This not only helps you with SEO, but it also helps people to trust in what you say, because they see you posting about the same subject or industry.2. Think Value. Always think about the value in the content you post to boards and blogs. How can the information you post be used right away? Whatever you post, let be of value to the reader.3. Develop Online Trust. Make sure that whatever you say you will provide or whatever resources you give are valid. There's nothing like clicking on a link or connecting with someone only to not have them respond. It breaks trust and believe me they'll comment about it on your wall, message board or blog.Let's Build a Trusting Online Relationship!Trina NewbyWomen About BizClick here for a FREE Basic Membership to Women About Biz!

Have you heard of the Ebony experiment? A Black couple has dedicated the next year to try to spend with Black businesses as much as possible. They have a sign outside of their home that is a rolling total of dollars they have spent with Black businesses. I think that is a wonderful idea and a stellar effort. Now if we could just get 39,999,998 other Black people to do the same.Did you know that there are only a few completely Black owned and operated networking sites online today? Most have been started by other ethnic groups because they saw the value in our collective $900+ Billion dollars? Or others are Black Owned Groups located within websites owned by other ethnic groups. Come join me in supporting this new venture which already has a base of over 22,000 positive Black people and businesses and let's change our own economy starting right now!I am so honored to be a part of a Black owned and operated company that is taking social networking, Black business networking and Black shopping by combining them together to help promote & support more Black businesses around the world. This is a free online community for every positive Black person who wants to support Black businesses. So to reward their efforts, every person who joins the site earns points, every time they purchase they earn points, every time they get someone else to join they also earn points. So this creates a viral effect that we expect to change the way Black consumers support Black Businesses. This site will have all of the features of Facebook, Twitter, MySpace and more! So how would you like to be sitting on top of a social network of hundreds or thousands of Black consumers and earning points on every item they purchase and every person they invite to the network that you can redeem to purchase from Black Businesses? Visit www.blackbusinessnetwork.com/TeamDollar right now and sign up for your free account. If you were already a general member of TAG Team, just use that login info. Networking

African Entrepreneurs Network understands that all businesses are not created equal. Therefore, we created a network designed to help all level of businesses. Small businesses in general do require exposure in order to be successful. Companies pay a lot of money to get in front of millions of consumers because they recognize that marketing is required in order to generate revenue. Television commercials account for most of the advertising of goods and services, and they have proven to be very successful. Magazines, likewise, are successful in their own rights; they also have a share in the market of advertising. The more popular the magazine, the more the likelihood for a certain ad to be properly circulated. Now there is the Internet, the information super highway, where traffic is mind boggling. What better medium for one to advertise and reach a very large percentage of the population. Then, there is also the cost of an ad. Advertising can be expensive if you advertise on television and the popular magazines. However, the Internet can also give you the same exposure if you advertise in the right forum. African Entrepreneurs Network encourages its members to advertise because it works. Anyone who wants to be successful in business is going to require some exposure. The network and its members also create a community of business owners who share ideas and also advertise their businesses at low cost. There is referral marketing within the community and the members support one another's business. African Entrepreneurs Network has created a "Shopping Mall" of businesses that is visited and supported by the members of the network.Congratulations to all who have taken the initial step of business ownership, and is presently sitting in the driver's seat. Now is the time to put on your navigation system to direct you to your destination. With that we welcome you to the African Entrepreneurs Network where your small business ownership dreams will be realized with the assistance of our advisors, counselors, and our network members.Ola AkinsanyaCEO and Founder of African Entrepreneurs Networkhttp://africanceos.ning.comhttp://africanentrepreneur.net
