Summer (13)

Here's to a Productive Summer!

For some of you, summer time may not mean anything different for you than warmer weather. But for me and my fellow educators who are also entrepreneurs, the summer time is my most productive time. For at least 3 months I get A LOT of work done for my business. I am able to sit down, focus and revamp things if necessary, take on more projects, hire more people, and prepare for the last quarter of the year. I LOVE the summer time for this reason. Having the ability to focus daily on my business during the summer is just one of the benefits to being an educator. Education is definitely a passion and I cannot let go of it. But the ability to have the summer time to focus on my business is a true bonus. As I approach the end of the school year (today :)), I want to share this article I came across by Mocha Writer that I thought was a great reminder for work-from-home entrepreneurs. Read and enjoy and have a great summer!

Your Time to Shine This Summer

During the summer months, you can always count on the media to do some type of weather-related stories. This could also be your opportunity to promote yourself and/or your business.

Developing ideas that can help you promote your business in summer doesn't have to take a great deal of time or a large financial investment in order to see positive results. The key to getting the media's attention is to come up with a creative (and fun) campaign that will help them generate a news or weather-related story.

Here are some examples:

Offer cool down treats: Arrange a day with a local ice cream store to have a free ice cream giveaway for anyone who walks in with your business card. You would certainly need a budget for that--especially if you've circulated A LOT of business cards. But you could also limit it to the first 25 or 50 customers and let the media know you're doing this as a Summer Appreciation Event.

Another similar idea is to simply pack some ice cold drinks and take to employees who have to work outside for a living. It's a nice gesture and may not only give you some media exposure but also some additional business.

Host a Pool Party for kids: Contact the local weatherman and invite him to come over and offer some tips on how to stay cool this summer. Certainly, his or her own station will cover the event.

Product giveaways: When I was promoting my book, Whatever! A Baby Boomer's Journey Into Middle Age, I offered a fan as a part of the promotion. If you purchased a copy of the book, you also got a free "hot flash" fan. Find something creative you can give away that would be directly tied into summer.

Sponsor an activity or event in your community: Check with your local Chamber of Commerce, City Hall or your local church for community events and find out how you can get your name or business connected. It would be worth sitting out in the hot sun for a couple of hours if a TV or newspaper crew stopped by to interview you, wouldn't it?

Check the websites of your local stations: Find out what they're up to and see how you can get involved--if only as a volunteer. You can network your way from there.

If all else fails, create your OWN media event and post it on YouTube, Vimeo, UStream, etc. You may find yourself getting even GREATER expsoure.

All of the events should be planned well in advance to give you time to promote and alert the media, which requires press releases and other announcements to be sent at least two weeks in advance.

Jewelry Piece Feature of the Week

Summertime is here and we all want to show it in our very own special way. When I think of summer the first images that come to mind are the sun, beautiful weather and beaches. This necklace reminds me of the summertime with the variations of yellow beads holding up a mother of pearl shattered flower. As a part of the Chic Summer Line, Sunrise Pearl is a necklace that can be worn casually or will make a perfect piece with a semi-formal outfit. Exclusively sold by The Pink Locket.~Kamilah C.http://thepinklocket.com

Summer Skin

When summer sun comes out, winter cover-ups come off and, weather you’re ready or not, you have to bare it all. Even the most prim and proper person feels the need to strip when it’s hot out.Bringing Sexy BackCold weather and low humidity can slow down cellular turn over, causing dead skin to build up. If left on the surface, these cells just block product absorption and leave newer emerging cells thirsty for hydration. That’s why the first step to developing summer skin is exfoliation. If the skin on your body can take it, a mechanical exfoliant like Sahala’s Spicy Mango Body Polish will do the trick. However, weather you think you’re sensitive or not, you need to be more cautious with the thinner, more delicate skin on the face. Try Babor’s Mild Peeling with rounded peach pits. It’s more gentle than drug store brands. Chemical exfoliants, like enzymes and acids, are proven to be the most effecitve. Most commonly obtained from papaya or pineapple, enzymes free dead skin cells and reduce inflammation without greatly altering the skin’s pH. If you really want to speed up the process, ask your esthetician for a series of head to toe lactic peels. Often derived from sour milk, this alpha hydroxy acid treatment works by dislodging the glue that holds surface cells together, guaranteeing an all-over-glow.Skin that’s been stripped of it’s protective barrier is more vulnerable to UV rays; so don’t over do it. Protect yourself with a sun block containing zinc and titanium dioxide but stay away from chemical sun screens. They can cause skin to have an un-even texture. Lisa Sickler, West Coast Regional Trainer for Babor Cosmetics, suggests giving sun protection a boost.”Vitamin E is a great anti-oxidant and nori algea helps deflect harmful UV rays away from delicate skin”, Lisa says. And yes, this information is for women of every ethnicity. A little bit of melanin may go a long way towards protecting the deeper layers of skin from aging, but UV rays do penetrate the epidermis. This is what causes those dark blemishes that, over time, become “age spots”.*Another great way to shed your winter coat is a complete body wax. Seasoned spa goers start the summer with a full arm / under arm / full leg /bikini / thong and tummy visit. Once the hair is ripped out of the follicle just stay out of the sun for at least 24 hours and your swimsuit ready for 4 to 6 weeks.Get Your Shine OnSo you’ve awakened hibernating skin and you’re ready to glow. If your skin’s not quite yet flawless, Bobbie Brown’s Creamy Concealer Kit can camouflage blemishes and prevent makeup from running. To mimic the sun’s effect, select a few bronzers from Nars The Multiples collection. Blend up the high planes of the cheeks, over the brow bone and down the bridge of the nose to accent your best features. For a touch more color, using a squirrel bristle brush, sweep gold based iridescent shadows with overtones of pink or kahki across the lower lid to make eyes sparkle. Stila and Shu Uemura are makeup artist’s favorites. Using blush in sheer warm pigments, like Nars’ Gina, makes cheeks pop while allowing healthy skin to shine through. Just apply color to the “apple” only. Then choose any Lorac Lip Polish in a selection of shades to keep lips looking kissable. If you’ve been treating your lashes with Jan Marini’s Age Intervention Eyelash Conditioner which actually improves hair thickness, the only tool you need is Shu Uemura’s famous eyelash curler to complete your sun kissed summer look.*To combat midday shine, I suggest Shiseido’s Prepare line. These non-powdered wax tissues come in varying degrees of absorbency. (available online)*Covering your body in baby oil may look cute, but it actually blocks vital moisture from penetrating the skin and attracts harmful UV rays.Lean BackThe final step in maintaining summer skin is to take it easy. According to Dr. Raakhi Mohan, who incorporates an Ayurvedic approach to wellness in her practice in Long Beach, CA, “true beauty is a reflection of one’s health and sense of inner balance”. Here are Dr. Mohan’s suggestions to help you de-stress and ensure that your skin looks good all summer long.SUGGESTION BENEFITEat lots of berries and leafy greens These foods are high in anti-oxidants and aid eliminationTake a yoga class Promotes relaxation and benefits every organGo for a walk Increases circulation which oxygenates the cellsDrink plenty of water Hydrates and flushes toxinsBIO:Aliesh D. Pierce is a freelance makeup artist, esthetician and educator committed to “helping women create their own unique definition of beauty”. Her work can be seen at alieshpierce.com.

I thank God for Dudley products on nights like tonight. I have been so busy that I have missed 2 weeks of going to the salon. So I decided to do my own hair. I used my Dudley Deluxe Shampoo which has left my hair shiny and manageble and then I finished it off with my Dudley's Hair Mask which I just got this week. I had never used it before and to be honest I did not know what to expect. Well I am pleased with the results after covering my hair with a plastic shower cap and sitting under the dryer for a few minutes, I was able to actually rinse it out and use Dudley's setting lotion and total control shining gel to set my hair with rollers. I should get back under the dryer but I decided to write my blog instead. Now I have been a Dudley Beauty Advisor for a few months now and I figure the best way to learn all of the products and describe them is to actually experience them for myself. I have had fun using the skin care system and makeup reminding myself how great it is to be a Black woman and all of the options that we actually have in America.Where else can you make money by making your friends and family as fabulous as you are. :)It is currently summer time and I am having a ball with my new lip candyThey are very shimmery with nice summer shades while tasting sweet My Peach Pop taste like a Pop up Ice cream and my Frosted Chocolate tast like chocolate.I had to get the accent shades of eye shadow for the summer. The sun bronzes my skin while Dudley Cosmeticshighlights my skin.Loving them.to see some of the shades go to my sitehttp://www.vjones.dudleycosmetics.comOk well back 2 the dryer. Thanks for reading and I will try to take some photos!!Valerie

My hair turned out nice. Thanks to Dudley's hair products. I am. however going to get it done by a professional stylist at the Dudley Salon here in Greensboro, NC.I spent time today for myself. I actually got my brows and toes done. I have got to use this Dudley's Brush on Brow to fill them in but other than that I got dressed up and went out with my 2 year old princess paying bills this morning.I deposited a check in my account and was shocked to see how much money I had saved up. I was so happy that I gave a homeless man some money and a bottle of cold water. You have to share your blessings.I took my daughter home and then went out shopping for myself and daughter. (My husband likes to shop for our son) So I had to get some sunglasses. The sales lady told me that the shades were on clearance. WOW blessings do come right back around. So now I am back home and about to relax. God is Great. . . all of the time.http://www.vjones.dudleycosmetics.com beauty advisor 5066http://www.spot-tv.com
