Tips from FLOTUS on Leadership

Our First Lady Michelle Obama has done it again!  Every time she speaks she drops us knowledge to help us reflect our own way of thinking and actions! After watching the Democratic National Convention here is what I took away. 

"He believes when you work hard and you cross the door of opportunity, don't slam it! Don't close the door behind you! You REACH BACK and bring others up! @MichelleObama

1. Leadership is 100% about creating new leaders. If you are at the top and love the feeling of being above your subordinates then your motives for leadership are off. Effective leaders lead because they want to create change, influence others to take action, and work their way to a position to challenge the same in others. 

"Being President doesn't change who you are, it reveals who you are." @MichelleObama

2. Leadership is an internal expression of an inward ability. Leaders shouldn't become someone "new" once they get into their position because leadership is not about position. Leadership is about the ability to influence change on any level. It reveals who you are because it should be who you are.

"That's the man I see in those quiet moments late at night, hunched over his desk, poring over the letters people have sent him," she said. "I see the concern in his eyes ... and I hear the determination in his voice as he tells me, 'You won't believe what these folks are going through, Michelle . it's not right. We've got to keep working to fix this. We've got so much more to do." She added: "I see how that's what drives Barack Obama every single day."

3. Leadership is about the drive! What fuels you to keep going even in difficult situations? Leaders have to have something to refresh their energy. They frequently revisit the reason for the cause. They hear the voices of the people they are working for and figure out solutions to fix them. Leaders are true problem solvers. 

"In the end, for Barack, these issues aren't political. They're personal," she said.

4. Leaders have values. They add value to the issues they value! Simply put they stand for what they believe in.  It allows authenticity and a personal connection to be made.

Three Ways to Achieve Success IMMEDIATELY

1. Define your own success.
When it comes to success I find it interesting that people are always Googling how to make it big or how to makes loads of money. The only way to be successful under your own terms is to define success for yourself. What does it means to be successful? Does it mean a new position? A new salary? A nice car or a house is a fancy neighborhood? You cannot allow others to define success for you. 

2. Route your own success. 
You have to spell out success and then determine how you are going to get there. You know what it takes to get the things you want in life. Everyone knows that to build wealth you have to save and spend below your means. The reason why we aren't all rich is because everyone is not self disciplined enough to reach the goal. Chart your course so that you have a clear idea of where you are headed. (Simply put create goals and write two or three points as to how you are going to reach them!) 

3. Drive your own success. 

Do it! I know it's easier said than done but the people who become the most successful are the one's who don't just plan but do.

Finding Your Lost Motivation

What do you do to re-energize when your spirits are down and you've lost motivation? You've got to do something when your spirits are low? So what can you do besides mope around in misery? Try these tips below!

  1. Write out 5 things you want to achieve. 
  2. Next write out what difference will it make if you actually achieve this goal. 
  3. Is there a tangible picture that you can find of what your achieved goal looks like? Go online and print it out. Tape it in a visible place like your refrigerator. 
  4. Set deadlines for you goals. 
  5. Make it visible.

While you're busy working find physical and mental ways to reenergize like:

1. Listening to inspirational music. I've literally had to create an entire CD for each goal. I have one for my non-profit with music all about being important and making a change. When I listen to it I don't only like the songs but the message moves me and reminds me why I'm working. When I start to feel tired I pick the best track and blast it!!

2. Workout. I know what you're thinking but you actually gain energy when you begin to move your muscles.

3. Drink water. Replenish and cleanse your body.

4. Get some sleep. Sometimes you can't worry about it, sleep on it and try it again the next day with a fresh approach.

5. De-stress with a massage. Nothing beats a relaxing message to take your mind off of your worries.

As a security expert, I am trained to never leave any rock unturned when it comes to exposing dangerous situations, which is why I often suggest that companies look inside their own walls as they try to protect the classified information they possess.  There has been an increase with insider security threats making the workplace and its employees not part of the solution, but part of the danger.

 

How do you keep your company safe from insider threats?  I searched the web to find some great tips for companies:

 

Educate Employees

In addition to educating employees on what company information is classified or not, you should also educate them on your security policies and procedures.  “Establish a comprehensive awareness program to include annual security training with a testing component, e-mail tips, posters, a letter of support from senior management, self-assessment surveys, awareness luncheons, and a security web site. Better yet, supplement training with awareness briefings,” suggests Gideon T. Rasmussen in Insider Risk Management Guide.  “Briefings give personnel the opportunity to ask questions and put the information security team in the position of advocating security initiatives.

 

Monitor Online Activities

Make sure you have strong account and password policies in place, suggests the article Protecting Against Insider Threat, this will allow you to monitor the online actions of your employees.  “Logging, periodic monitoring, and auditing provide an organization the opportunity to discover and investigate suspicious insider actions before more serious consequences ensue,” states the article.

 

Add Nontechnologists to Security Team

According to an article on DarkReading.com, companies “that performed best in dealing with insiders also had security teams who were not all technologists.”  They suggest adding human-resource, legal and business experts to your security team to make it more well-rounded and effective.

Black History Month 2013

Years from now History will recall that February, 2013 was the first Black History Month celebrated after the United States had re-elected its first Black president.  February, 2009 was also significant, but the re-election may hold more historical significance.

 

Black History Month is always an opportunity to reflect on what has been, and is the Black Experience in America.  It has been a turbulent existence; yet it is an existence rooted in resilience and accomplishment.  It is an experience ordained and protected by the Master.

 

When kings and queens from the west coast of Africa were shipped to the east coast of the United States to become the property of plantation owners, many wondered how the Master could forsake them.  How could the Master allow men to own other men?  How could the Master allow these owners to hate and demean and persecute other humans?  I don’t know that an answer will ever be known, but I do know that the Black Experience in America is still alive and still strong.  That could not be unless there was a Divine plan.  A Divine protection.

 

As time went on, Black Americans were able to survive the cruelties of that peculiar institution and found ways to thrive in an environment that was ultra-racist.  To consider where Black Americans are today compared to 1865 is nothing less than amazing.  Actually it is Amazing Grace.  Black Americans have been continually rebuked and scorned only to reemerge stronger.  No other people have been as persecuted or discriminated against in this country as Black Americans.  And yet we’re still here mining out respect and opportunity from wherever it may come.

 

The resilience of Black Americans has served the United States well.  Blacks Americans have become renowned scientists, surgeons, and physicians saving lives all of the world.  Black Americans designed the U.S. capital and created the traffic light.  Two Black Americans have served on the Supreme Court.  Black Americans own TV networks, recording companies, movie studios, newspapers and publishing companies.  Black Americans are presidents of universities, CEOs of fortune 500 companies, and government officials all over the country.  And yes, the President of the United States is a Black American.

 

We may never know what the Master’s plan is, but I will suggest that there is a Divine reasoning and purpose that has enabled Black Americans to survive the struggles and strife of this existence.  A purpose that has taken us from the Middle Passages to Jim Crow to a Civil Rights Movement lead by a King.  If it was not true, we would not be here.

I know, I know. You don’t have the time for an alternate social network. Nevertheless I wouldn’t be doing my job if I didn’t talk up Pinterest, as this image-centric social network has become an amazing spot for beauty salon businesses to:

Who or What has Branded You?

10744090452?profile=originalWe hear a lot about branding -- personal branding, entrepreneurial branding -- how you show up; your logo, your colors, your message, and this month we will address branding in those arenas in other posts.  But, first, as this month is International Boost Self Esteem Month, we want to touch on branding from a self esteem stand point.  

In our life's travel, we go through different stages, and frequently before we come to know who we are, we allow others (and sometimes, circumstances) to label us -- branding in a different sense.Some of the labels I suffered and maybe you did too, include insecure, co-dependent, being the yes-person; circumstances included teen pregnancy, unemployment, underemployment, abuse -- physical, emotional, mental.  What or who has branded you?

For those of you on the journey of discovering self, use these in your travels:

The Stubborn Warriorette.  The inner warrior, whether she's standing tall, on her knees or wounded in a fetal position, she's there.  Her mindset is:

  • I WILL do my purpose;
  • This is NOT the end;
  • I refuse to allow a temporal reality to be a permanent life sentence;
  • I must see what's on the other side of this thing.

She has stubborn, bulldog faith and she refuses to die. She finds and learns the lessons presented along the way and chooses not to allow bitterness to take up residence.

The Other Side.  Once you come to yourself -- once you're healed and have successfully filled the internal voids . . .

  • You shed the former labels;
  • Step into your true identity; and
  • Redefine and affirm the real you.   

Some will be shocked and even disappointed at the real you saying, "no" and setting boundaries -- 'who does she think she is?!'  Don't despair.  The opinions of other people don't matter so much any more. You've now created your own stage and some (naysayers and dream killers) might just need to vacate your space -- exit stage left!

Two nuggets to remember:

  1. Labels can't keep the REAL you bound.
  2. Your current circumstance may be part of your story, but is not your final destination.

Wouldn't it be nice to have someone in your life that you trust completely enough to let your guard down and tell them what's really going on -- especially during the times when you're struggling or feeling anxiety about something that you need to get done?  Or even better yet -- what if you had someone who is so jazzed up about what you're doing and where you're going that they're introducing you to others -- even when you're not around. Wouldn't that be oh so grand....

I attended a meeting this morning hosted by my friend and colleague Dr. Joel Martin. She hosts a monthly forum called Conversation on Leadership (COL) which is an intimate gathering of community leaders making their mark in their own way. I am very selective on the networking meetings that I attend because I place a premium on my time and I can only afford to spend time where I can add value and/or receive value - this is true for me both personally and professionally. Personally, if I'm not having fun or feeling a true connection, I try to add more of what I want but if the connection still isn't there, I move on. Life is too short to operate any other way.

 

What I really love about COL is that it's different. It's designed to be our time to focus on us and what we can do to take our work to the next level. There is absolutely no room for ego or titles to get in the way of us disarming, learning and getting the support we need from our learning partners. Today's session was facilitated by Dr. Robin Postel and she did an awesome job leading us through a change process that allowed us to get unhooked from a challenge in order to move forward powerfully with our work. I learned a lot and as usual, left our meeting feeling whole, complete and fully embraced by a group of like-minded leaders who place a premium on sowing seeds into their own development knowing that it is the ONLY way that we can do this work and have it be life-shifting. I'm also excited that Dr. Joel is one of many thought-leaders who will be leading an upcoming discussion with the members of The Emerge Leaders' Circle.

 

 

jpegAfter leaving our meeting, I immediately thought about a book that I read a few years ago by Keith Ferrazzi called Who's Got Your BackIt's a fabulous book that teaches the concept of building lifeline relationships. These are the people with whom you can really count on, open up to and share your fears and your failures while asking for help without worrying about being judged. These are also the very same people with whom you can share your goals and dreams with and they will be your guideposts, helping to lift you up and watch your back as you make your way over the top. 

I especially love the book because it helps to disarm you just enough to realize that even as an expert in your domain of excellence, Superwoman is a myth and you do not or will not have all the answers. At some point, you'll have to realize that the best of you comes from a co-creation of the wisdom, guidance and tough love that your lifeline partners give you. The problem is that some people seldom get to a place where we ask for help - the support that we need to move forward. Why? Fear...fear of being seen as weak, incompetent, unable to play at the same level or simply not meeting the expectations of those who are expecting big things from you. This has such a crippling effect that we become immobilized, stuck and often paralyzed by our own actions or lack thereof. 

The book suggest four reasons why lifeline relationships are necessary:

1. To help us get in agreement with ourselves about how we define success on an 'individual' level.
2. To develop a plan to get us there with strategies that are inclusive of both lifeline and strategic partners. 
3. To identify and make a commitment on what we will stop doing and say no to in order to move forward. 
4. To surround ourselves with people who have our best interest at heart. These are the people who are going to give it to us real, raw and relevant so that we can transform our lives from great to remarkable! 

The first month of 2013 is behind us and now is the perfect time to start developing your own lifeline relationships. You need to know who's got your back and who's back you will have. If you haven't already, figure out who you want in this innermost circle of your life, have a direct conversation about your intention, develop some specific actions that will guide your newfound partnerships (this is also the what signals to you that it's working) and get busy creating the environment for the magic to unfold!
