Not trying to dampen your day, but give you insight on our current state and how you can help yourself.I just recently noticed that gas prices are starting to increase. Of course, it always happens when summer hits. No one really has a good reason for this increase. Last year, we were told that gas prices increased due to the drilling of more well holes. So, I guess this only occurs during the summer months(lol).If you are serious about making some money, start with getting a grasp on steps needed for this to happen. Marcus GarveyI love these words from Brother Garvey that he spoke almost 100 years ago. Isn't it funny how cycles repeat themselves? Do you think that Bro. Garvey, Malcolm or Dr. King ever envisioned a Black family in the White House? So taking that in consideration and the visionary words of Bro Garvey, what can we do in 2009 to help his vision of Black pride, unity and economic empowerment come to an even higher level of fruition?We can expand on Bro Garvey's vision of uniting more Black Consumers with Black Businesses. We need production facilities owned and operated by Black people! To produce the wonderful bath, body, beauty products, clothing, computers, CDs/DVDs, etc. We need to search for a Black owned business for our everyday products and services first, before we shop at the Big Box or other retail stores. Then we need a distribution operation to get these products made by Black entrepreneurs to the Black consumers and Black retail establishments! After that we need more Black financial institutions. I personally have both my personal and business account with a Black owned bank. We can take the Black Wall Street (Tulsa, Oklahoma) to a global level and create hundreds even thousands of self-sufficient Black communities around the world.With any major change in society, it starts with a handful of people with a united vision. Those willing to make the vision into a reality...these are true visionaries. Those willing to accept that everyone they talk to will not accept this idea of change...many will take the wait and see attitude. Let me wait and see if you can do this before I step out and try it. But there will be many others who see the big picture and come on board who are ready, willing and able to help do what is needed.So if you have seen or heard any of my previous blogs, you know that I am actively pursuing to fulfill Bro Garvey’s dream. Self Discipline: Your Commitment to Yourself

Self discipline is the most important attribute one can possess. If you are a small business owner or solo entrepreneur, self discipline will either make or break your business. The core of this attribute is your commitment to yourself and your dreams. How committed are you to your dream? Do you wake up every morning with a plan laid out to help move you closer to your desires? Do you know what your high payoff task is and what it will do for your business? Do you know how to effectively communicate your desires to those who can help you? Do you know to whom you should communicate these desires? If the answer to any of these questions is no or maybe, you need to re-examine your commitment to your dream.If you are not committed it will prove difficult to get others to become invested in your dream. The concept of self discipline is a beautiful thing. To execute this concept is simple. In fact, it is one of the most simplistic concepts that exists, yet the execution of it allow us to make sense of highly complex situations and experiences. Many view self discipline as an illusive thing that only a select few are capable of achieving. That is an untruth. There is and will always be but one thing that will allow you to possess self discipline.1. Do what you say you are going to do. That is all. When you follow through with action on the things you have intended mentally, it is an execution of self discipline. Only you can free yourself from the "should haves", "could haves", and "would haves". If you commit your physical body to your internal decisions, wants and desires, the only possible result is successful action. Your successful action will result in the manifestation of things all around you. It will allow others to recognize and experience these things as well. When others experience them along side of you, it will prompt them to become invested in you and your dream.Remember, your commitment to yourself is the heart of self discipline. You cannot expect others to commit to you if they cannot see that you are first committed to yourself. Exercise self discipline always. Do what you say you are going to do. Write 100 articles in 100 days if you say you are going to do it. Go to the gym every morning if you said you were going to do that. I went to my safe haven, Barnes & Noble, and rushed the self-help section in search of a public speaking book to help me get over my fear.As I went through the exercises in the book on the weekends what I found was that I didn’t have a problem with public speaking. The problem was “the voice” I had crafted for at work situations was interfering with me speaking over a long period of time. You, see, as a youngster, without any prompting from anyone, I learned that the skill of inflecting my voice several levels higher seemed to make others (teachers, employers, interview subjects) more at ease with me. This inflected voice is far, far different from my natural husky intonation. Keeping up that higher range was affecting my natural breathing rhythm, causing my lungs to run out of gas.The voice I had crafted to prove to others that I too was intelligent, kind and deserving of the same respect was either going to ruin my speaking abilities or I was going have to use my natural voice in order to speak clearly. My unnatural voice had become a tool, a vehicle to tell society, “Please don’t judge me by my skin color. Please look past my race to determine whether or not I am qualified to be where I am.”I have now been using the voice God blessed me with for the last year. There will still be many other hurdles to jump. My only hope is that when I finish this race, I will complete it with who my parents raised me to be – Me.
