we have been working hard for the past year, building our numbers, networking with people who want to be involved, getting ready; while waiting for our tax exempt status to go through...we are now officially a 501 (c)(3) organization and now we can really start working for God. Let us know how/if you would like to get involved. For those of you that don't know what this means...the biggest thing is that anyone who donates to us (time, money, services, etc.)you can claim your donation on your income tax. It is not legal to claim donations to any non-profit; they must be a 501(c)organization to be tax deductible.

As many of us know, October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month. As someone who has lost loved ones to this disease, I am happy to introduce an entrepreneur that is looking to bring awareness to this disease, year round. Lindsey Compton is the CEO and founder of Hair's A Cure, which is a breast cancer foundation that seeks to celebrate the love of healthy black hair & body while raising awareness and funds for breast cancer treatments. At 22 years of age, I am impressed to witness her tenacity and passion for such an important cause. After having some life challenges, Lindsey quickly realized that God's plan for her was different than what she planned. While researching statistics of breast cancer for African-American men and women, she came up with, Hair's A Cure. Here is some of the research she found: Of the estimated 34(%) percent of African-American women diagnosed with breast cancer in 2011, nearly 19(%) percent of them passed away – that’s over 6,000 lives taken due to this disease. 77(%) percent of African-American women who are diagnosed with breast cancer survive compared to 90(%) percent of Caucasian, non-Hispanic women.
Lindsey's goal is to educate African-American men and women on the importance of healthy living, bring awareness of Breast Cancer and raise money to help diagnosed patients pay for treatments. She shared with me that, "Hair’s A Cure will help increase the survival rate, and teach women about the importance of our health from the soles of our feet to the ends of our hair strands". I hope you enjoy her story.
1. Tell me your story. What were you doing before you started your own business?
Right before I started my business I was making plans to fly off to New York and attend graduate school. Unfortunately, things came up that made me depressed for a short period of time. I began to realize earlier this summer (2012) that my plans for my life were not the plans God had for my life.
I was so used to strategically planning the next steps in my path that I had lost my understanding for a moment that God directs us where he needs us in life. For me, that was Hair's A Cure.
As a 22-year-old, I was shocked and disheartened when seeing that African-American women have the highest mortality rate of breast cancer related deaths compared to any other race (41% higher). This has a lot to do with lack of funds, lack of early detection, and other preventable actions (please read the article here: http://www.washingtonpost.com/blogs/therootdc/post/breast-cancer-mortality-rates-for-african-american-women-disproportionately-high/2012/04/09/gIQAxJoR6S_blog.html?socialreader_check=0&denied=1 )
Although it is taking a lot of work to reach my dream of saving lives, I'm pursuing my path one small step at a time!
2. What made you want to start a business and what is your mission?
I wanted to start Hair's A Cure because I was appalled by the statistics of African-American women and men who die each year due to factors related to either not being able to afford breast cancer treatments or late tumor detection.
One day I was just thinking about all of these staggering statistics and the thought of "Hair's A Cure" came to mind. Beyond that, as of eight months ago I have been extremely involved within the community of natural hair and healthier living. This combined with God's dream gave me the inspiration to start this business.
My mission is to "Promote Hair Just as Healthy as Breasts" and I want to do this by offering affordable cancer treatments to African-American women and men who cannot afford them, while educating our race on the importance of healthy eating. What we eat DOES make a difference in our health and helps to prevent diseases.
3. What inspires you? What keeps you motivated daily to keep growing your business?
My motivation is imagining the day I will be able to drive to the homes of women and men whom I have helped to give funds for affordable cancer treatments. That is my motivation, and that is what helps to keep me going.
4. Do you have a mentor? Who is it and why? Do you believe it's important to have one?
No, no mentor! I believe it's important to have one, but I have yet to find one of my own. For now I set my eyes on Christ and pray for the best.
5. What would you tell someone who wants to get involved in your line of business but doesn't know how to get started?
Realize that this is not about you or making your money. This industry has turned into money hungry people capitalizing off of individuals who are dying from this disease. It's sick, actually.
If you want to save lives then save lives. There's nothing wrong with creating a special breast cancer t-shirt or planning fundraising events. But when your ultimate motive is to make yourself money, then that's a problem. This is (and should be) a sacrificial move to help others because you have been blessed to be alive, healthy and well.
You have to have a passion for this. If you don't have passion for this field, then find out what your passion is and go from there. You will be 10 times more successful by doing what you were meant to do rather than forcing yourself into a place you don't fit.
6. What advice would you give to someone with an entrepreneurial spirit?
Simple, never stop dreaming, but don't keep dreaming to the point where you don't get up and take action in pursing your dreams. Success does not fall out of the sky. You have to climb the ladder to reach it.
It's a lonely road to the top, believe me. But it's a rewarding one in the end.
7. How can anyone get involved and help your foundation?
We are looking for donations of $10 or more to help with startup costs and to help get treatments for patients in need. Here is the donation link: http://www.gofundme.com/hairsacure.
I want to thank Lindsey for taking the challenge to share her business with us. She has started a great cause and I hope you will find it in your heart to help her and others in any way. Support Breast Cancer Awareness Month anyway you can.

Are you looking for ways to increase your productivity? This is an area that I spend a lot of time in my endeavor to follow my passion which is empowering women and woman entrepreneurs.
There is very little that can cause a decrease in productivity as easily as burnout. While you may be tempted to believe that putting every waking moment into working on your job or building your business is a good way to get things done, there is an additional factor which you may not have considered. When you figuratively take your work home with you or never officially close business you can increase your risk of burnout and get much less accomplished in the long-run.
In this scenario you are not just doing work during your free time you are actually keeping your work on your mind during your free hours. When you are at home, or somewhere else other than in your workplace, you can easily burn yourself out by keeping it as your main focus.
Key #1
When work is done or business is done at home have an official shut down of your work, of your business.
It may go something like this. At work outside of the home close the door to the office, get in your car, turn on some music that actually allows you to transition from work to home.
Home business
Hopefully you have a place that’s designated as your home office. Shut the computer down whether that’s to put it on sleep or standby. Move away from the computer. If it’s in a office with a door, close the door. Put on some music that will also allow you to make the transition from work to home.
This sounds simple, however, you’d be surprised at how beneficial it is to making the transition from work to home. If you need to go back then consider it extra work and not stringing along your work hours throughout the day.
Key #2
Leave work thoughts at work
During your off-hours, you may put a lot of time into thinking about your job. You may worry about whether you will get something done on time, or the overall quality of your work. This can lead you to become overly stressed, anxious, and overwhelmed. You may become more fatigued by your work when you are thinking about it and worrying about it than when you are actually doing your job.
Instead of stressing yourself out over whatever you need to accomplish the next day, or how much progress you are making with something you are working on, try learning how to leave those thoughts and concerns at your place of business.
Key #3
Cultivate positive habits
When you have free time, develop some positive habits. Learning how to relax, to participate in healthy recreation, and giving both your time and focus to your friends and family will all reduce your risk of burnout. When you have begun to develop these habits, it will not take long for you to see the results. You will start each new work day feeling physically, emotionally, and mentally refreshed. You will have more to give to your job when you are refreshed. You will be more motivated, more energetic, and more productive.
And you know I like to over deliver so here’s a bonus key
Bonus Key #4
Saturate everything with Prayer
Begin your day with prayer. You can never go wrong by staying close to the master planner. You’ll gain clarity of vision and peace will be imparted. Wisdom will also be given to those that ask. James 1:5
You can also meditate on God’s word through out the day and most definitely close your day with prayer.
Prayer will also help you to be less irritable and those things that would really get to you will seem to bounce off.

Self-discipline is an essential factor for productivity and success. Without it, one becomes lazy, unmotivated, and dependent upon others. Lack of self-discipline also makes for a difficult-to-deal-with employee, boss, or coworker.
Exercising self-discipline means, in an old-fashioned term, setting yourself to a task. You need to know what must be done, when it must be done– and do it. Good self-discipline includes a basic schedule, or framework, of what needs to be accomplished within a specific period of time. You do not allow yourself to become sidetracked, or to procrastinate.
However, being too rigid with self-discipline does not increase productivity. It can even lessen it. If you do not allow yourself any breaks throughout the workday, or any room for error at all, the expectations you are placing on yourself are too rigid. Instead of getting more done, or doing more in a shorter period of time, it can cause you to become frustrated with your tasks and your job.
If you learned self-discipline early in life, you probably do not have any difficulty with it now. On the other hand, if your schooling years and family life were too rigid, or if little was expected of you, this is a good time to develop the habit. You may have managed to slide through your early years without a good sense of self-discipline, but it will be a stumbling-block to your career.
A good way to start cultivating self-discipline is
I don't know about you, but I like to think of summertime as the prime season for RELAXING--kicking back, enjoying the warm sun, balmy breezes and fun events with family and friends. Swimming, concerts, good music, food--just good times all around. And I don't want stress anywhere in there!

Women’s Empowerment incorporates various components that when successfully integrated will yield a greater return on your endeavors.
As a woman you have many demands on your time, however, if you add that of being a woman entrepreneur it can be a very frustrating task to leverage your time. It may seem that the more you try to balance out your day the less time you end up with.
Do you feel like your day is spent in “firefighter” mode – putting out one emergency blaze after another?
You can easily spend eight hours or more at the beck and call of the urgent activities on your list: The phone call that comes right when you’re sitting down to do some much-needed strategic planning, the unexpected invitation to contribute to a blog round-up, the desperate plea for a last-minute speaker on an industry teleconference. While these all might be worthy tasks, they’re not necessarily related
to your high-level goals. And as a result, the time you’ve set aside for your important activities can be usurped by the tyranny of the urgent.
It is very tempting to check emails all day every hour or answer your phone overtime it rings.
If you want to manifest your EMPIRE by moving toward the next levels quickly you must have a system for focusing on important tasks instead of the urgent ones.
Here are five tips for prioritizing
1. Set expectations. I’ve had mixed feedback on this one. I’ve developed a system and enforce it so that I can remain healthy and sane. When doing this one you must get over what people think of you and commit to what you’ve set as an action to support your empowering success. You train people how to treat you and what to expect from you. If you always respond to their emails immediately, they’ll grow to expect immediate answers. Slowly wean them from expecting you to be on-call, 24/7.
2. Create No distraction zones. Although you may be tempted to shut down your phone, email and other interruptions for 8 – 10 hours, it’s actually not practical to turn off your phone ringer for 8 hours straight, or to check your email only once a day. But you can set up zones where you limit outside interruptions. Start with a no email time first thing in the morning. Institute a quiet time first thing in the morning for one hour.
Get to the cash producing activities before you check email. Once you’ve adjusted to this you can add another quiet zone, maybe in the afternoon right before you quit working. This way you can close your day and have a fresh empowering start the next day.
3.Know what “important” is. No more 10 item to do lists. You have to have your high-level goals in front of you, literally and figuratively. You must know what you’re trying to accomplish this month, this week, today, so you can filter your activities accordingly.
4. Create systems to support your new habits. This one tip has done wonders for some of my clients that I’ve shared it with. Email in-box filters that shuffle non-critical newsletters and group emails to another filter for later reading will help keep you from getting sidetracked. Removing all non-essential programs and icons from your computer desktop (and from your physical desktop, too!) can keep you focused. Figure out where you’re getting derailed and create some boundaries to keep you on task.
You can realize productive days instead of just busy, overwhelming, pull your hair out days, however, as I always say don’t just learn new skills and systems, take targeted action and implement.
I’ll share this and more in more detail during The Empowerment Diva’s Fit and Fabulous Coaching Program/Club.
Here’s to a healthy you and a thriving business!

How you spend your time says a lot about who you are.
How much time have you lost looking for something? When you
spend time looking for things you are also losing money.Time is money right? If you are simply too tired or do not have adequate time to do anything in the evenings, then your daily routine is out of balance and you need to make adjustments.
Your work can be too difficult or unsuitable, or you may not be making full use of your hours during your day or evening. A good balance of your time is needed for work, goals, recreation,
family time, your spiritual life and relaxation. Take a close look at your
daily routine, examine your findings and come up with a plan. Be prepared to
follow your plan and with this, you can become better organized.
I use a great tool to enhance your endeavors toward having proper balance in your personal, spiritual and business life. The participants in The Make it Happen “30 days of Empowerment” Coaching program will have the opportunity to experience this popular tool.

Let’s face it… we live in an extremely fast paced world… some call it a “microwave society”. We don’t always get to follow through on the little things that clear the way for good energy and relaxation! So… I’ve compiled a list of a few QUICK tasks that will help clear your environment and in the process rejuvenate your space and energy!!! I’ve tried them and I must say it works!
1- Clear ALL clutter and junk from your home. This is hard for pack rats!!! BUT… simple rule, if you haven’t used it by the time you found it again… then you won’t need it anytime soon. Toss it! Don’t fool yourself by saying.. “oh, I can sell this on Ebay”. NOT gonna happen. Most of the time if you’re a pack rat, then you’re a procrastinator also. TOSS IT! This goes for your cars, purses, pockets, etc. (no gum wrappers, receipts, loose business cards or flyers) The entry way to your home, under your bed and behind your doors should be free of clutter.
2- Get rid of unwanted gifts and presents. YES, it’s alright to toss those too. I admit I feel bad about throwing out gifts, but if you’re not using them, and they are taking up space, TOSS IT! Besides, your close family and friends know what you like, and will be around to see you enjoy it.
3- ONLY keep photos that remind you of GOOD THINGS & TIMES!!! Toss (or burn) old photos of ex’s, old friends whom with your not so friendly anymore or anything else that brings bad energy or memories! TOSS IT! Put loose photographs in frames, photo albums or a photo box or… do what I do.. use them as postcards!
4- RESOLVE OLD ISSUES! Get rid of flakey friends, lovers and all people who do not have your best interest at heart. This can be hard.. but boy oh boy is it liberating and it feels GREAT! Get rid of old bills… keeping the current one so you can PAY IT! Read your mail OVER your trash can and eliminate junk mail.
5- PRAY & Meditate daily!!! A lot of us “hit the ground running”… and we don’t carve out that time to connect with God. Although we all should be walking in prayer constantly many of us fall short.. BUT.. it will help if you begin starting your day with a period of prayer and meditation. I do this as soon as I open my eyes. It’s a beautiful way to start your day… and a beautiful way to end the day.
Now, don’t try to get this all done in one day… it way take a few weekends to achieve, but once you start to purge and clean your environment, you will notice a different energy surrounding you and your family. Life will not seem as “hurried” and you will ultimately feel more relaxed in your castle. Blessings!!!
