“America’s Next Natural Model”
Deadline for models to apply is Dec. 18, 2010
Who will be crowned Miss Nappturality 2011? A lady with locs, or a beauty with a Fro-hawk?
The pageant, also known as America’s Next Natural Model, is looking for a new face to grace the pages of a national magazine and to represent one of its sponsors.
The online competition, which is in its third year, celebrates the beauty and versatility of natural hair. It began in 2008 as a collaboration between the site owners of Going-Natural.com and Nappturality.com , Mireille Liong and Patricia Gaines, respectively. Together their sites form a social network of well over 150,000 users who share information beyond the common interest of natural hair care.
“I am very exited about this event”, says Liong who is also the author of Going Natural, How to Fall in Love with Nappy Hair . It’s like America’s Next Top Model meets American Idol in an interactive social network nvironment.
The Miss Nappturality pageant is the perfect match for upcoming models who need exposure and for businesses interested in social media promotion. While natural beauties get free products and endorsement opportunities that can put them on the national stage, sponsoring companies can have their products promoted interactively to the hundreds of thousands of potential buyers who make up the growing social network.
The ultimate goal of America's Next Natural Model isto spread awareness about the hair and scalp disorders that plague a large majority of Black women. According to Dr. Jeffery J. Miller, dermatologist at the Milton S. Hershey Medical Center in Pennsylvania, 73 percent of African-American women suffer from relaxer-induced
alopecia and complain of hair breakage, split ends and dryness caused by relaxers.
America’s Next Natural Model takes on the lingeringissue by proving that African hair can be extremely beautiful without the need for hazardous chemicals, extensions or damaging weaves. At the same time, the organizers strive to make the case for a corporate dress code policy that is updated to include natural hairstyles to ease the pressure on ethnic women to straighten their strands.
Previous pageant winners have gone on to bigger and better things. After winning America's first-ever Next Natural Model, Tiana Tamara Townsel also became Miss Black Washington. And last year’s Miss Nappturality, Teesha Borum , is currently working on her acting career in Atlanta.
Photos of the models have been used in commercials of sponsoring companies all over the country. You can see the winning photos and read the respective interviews of the winners on Going-Natural.com.

For those of you who don't know, I spent more than 25 years in radio and television news. I was everything from a reporter to fill-in anchor to assignment editor and producer. I even filled in as a photographer during my early days in TV.
Today, my role as a media consultant is to help those seeking media attention find it. That includes coaching and preparing clients so they will be, what I call, “media marketable.”
But those seeking media attention aren’t the only ones who need tips. Anyone who is or wants to be in the business of interviewing others should have their act together as well. With BlogTalk radio on the scene, many wanna be radio hosts have popped up.
So here are some tips for those of you who want to give your best as the interviewer on the airwaves:
- Never give your guest the questions in advance. Many guests will try to give you a list of prepared questions. It’s OK to accept them but let them know you may not ask any or all of them. Giving them the questions in advance allows them to rehearse answers and not come across as natural during the interview.
- Always check to make sure your equipment is working.
- Treat the guest with respect. The interviewee deserves respect whether they are the President or just an average Joe Blow.
- Take control of the interview. Don’t let your guest over your show.
- You are not the center of attention. Remember you are there to get the perspective of the guest not give your own.
- Do the research you need to, but don’t try to cram it all into your questions. Before you start the interview put yourself in the shoes of a member of your audience. If they were here, what would they ask?
- The interview is a conversation. It is not a confrontation. You are not there to make the interviewee look stupid.
- Shorter questions are better than longer ones. The more detail there is in the question the more difficult it is for the interviewee to track what you are asking. Be as direct as you can without being rude.
- Be sure of your facts. There’s nothing worse than being told you are wrong by an interviewee – especially when it’s live.
- Listen carefully to your guest’s responses. You might come up with some follow-up questions.
Being credible as an interviewer means being professional and prepared.

Oh where, oh where did customer service go? While renovating our house we've made purchases from a lot of different businesses. From mom-and-pop shops to the big box retail companies to independent contractors and I must say the one thing that they all have in common is a general lack of good customer service. It seems to me the general attitude these days is to just 'get the job done'. But, it should (at least in my opinion) be about more than just getting the job done, it should also be about delivering the best experience possible to the customer.
It's all of those little things (that don't cost anything extra to do by the way), that will make a customer drive past three of your competitors and go out of their way to shop with you because they want to repeat the great experience they had the first time. Soon that repeat customer turns into a loyal customer. Then their loyalty spreads to their family and friends. And in no time you've developed a cult following all because you said 'good morning'. Ok, so it's not quite that simple, but still I wouldn't underestimate the power of good customer service.
So all you business owners out there, think about the little things you can do to help your customers have a more enjoyable experience when they enter your store. And don't keep it a secret, train your employees to put a smile on the customer's face. After all, you don't want someone you're paying to lose you money at the end of the day. So spread the word, good customer service is the newest trend in town and it's here to stay.

Today is a special day. I have had the pleasure of interviewing Mrs.Tamyka Washington, The CEOmamma! She is a successful business women, that resides in Talhassee, Florida. She teaches women "how to use social media and network marketing to build a profitable business and create the lifestyle they desire and deserve." (www.theceomamma.com) So at this time, I'm so excited to introduce everyone to Tamyka Washington, founder and CEO of http://www.theceomamma.com/!
1. Tell me your story. What were you doing before you started your own business?I am a wife, mom to five with baby number 6 on her way in February and entrepreneur! I work full-time from home operating two businesses, my primary business is with a wonderful Network Marketing company and I've recently started my own Marketing & Consulting business.
Prior to starting my first business in 2002, I worked a few service based and retail jobs that kept me away from my, then three children. I always knew having my own business was what I definitely wanted and I was
determined to make it happen.
2. What made you want to start a business and what is your mission? What made me want to start a business was my desire to be a stay-at-home mom but still be able to contribute to the household income. My passion was to help women like me, who wanted something more while keeping their personal priorities at the top of the list.
My mission was and still is today, to help women achieve their dreams of being successful business
owners by sharing my years of experience and knowledge.
3. What inspires you? What keeps you movtivated daily to keep growing your business? What keeps me inspired is the many thanks and appreciation I get from women I help regularly, get to where they want to be in their business. I have a great love for Social Media, Network Marketing and Blogging and It is my passion to be able teach women how to build and market their business on a budget, the same way I did and continue to do.
I'm motivated everyday by my children. It was because of them I started my first business and continue to
build a legacy for them. As they grow into young adults, it makes me proud to know they too, want to be
entrepreneurs!
4. Do you have a mentor? Who is it and why? Do you believe it's important to have one?At this time, I do not have a personal mentor, however, I have in the past and currently connect with others in my industry who inspire me and encourage me to be my absolute best. Having a mentor is valuable because it will allow you to have someone in your corner to not only look up to but to help you along your journey. A real mentor will be aware of your goals and dreams and help you regularly by holding you accountable for your actions (or lack of) to help you grow.
5. What would you tell someone who wants to get involved in your line of business but doesn't know how to get started? My first piece of advice would be to really be sure it is something you want to do and have a true passion for it. Starting any business is not easy and takes a certain level of commitment of time and dedication. You may not even see a profit for months but you have to be willing to stick with it because you love it.
To get started and be successful, you have to be willing to do the research and continue to learn everything you need to know within the industry. Tracking results and trying new methods is how you will grow productively and be effective.
6. What advice would you give to someone with an entrepeneur spirit? My advice would be to go for it! If you believe in yourself and have the drive, do it no matter what. There will be times that people won't support your vision or understand your dream but you should never give up!
