Three hundred churches throughout the Memphis area sponsored a multicultural, multigenerational revival for women this past weekend. In doing so, they answered Ellen Olford’s heartfelt prayer.Redemption 2009, the free two-day gathering held March 27 and 28 at the Cook Convention Center, drew 7,000-8,000 women on balmy Friday night while 5,000-6,000 braved gusty winds and rain on Saturday morning.Sharen Rooks, a conference volunteer and a member of Morning Chapel Missionary Baptist, found many reasons to celebrate as people of different backgrounds came together in a shared act of faith. Morning Chapel was among the African-American churches partnering with local white churches in the revival effort, and the bond already has produced interesting results.“There are changes taking place because of Trinity Baptist and Morning Chapel,” said Rooks, as she, Redemption 2009 event co-chair Vicki Reed and Linda Stephens of Central Church completed final preparations on Friday. “I think this is going to stick. You can see it now and the event hasn’t even taken place,” said Rooks, a minister’s wife and author of “What Happens When God Moves.”The revival comes at the end of the story, however. This tale unfolds 4 ½ years ago when Ellen Olford and husband, David, of Memphis met Priscilla and Jerry Shirer of Dallas. Shortly thereafter, Ellen, who is white, shared her vision – her burden – with Priscilla, an African American who is an internationally-known speaker, author and the daughter of well-known minister Dr. Tony Evans. The multiracial, multigenerational relationship established a foundational guideline for the Redemption movement: prayer partners not only from different churches but from different races and cultural groups.“Four and a half years ago, I said to Priscilla, ‘Would you be my friend? Would you be my prayer partner?’” Olford recounted at Saturday’s gathering.Olford, chair of Redemption 2009 and a member of Central Church, said, “Memphis is a great city with great people and great churches – a town that needs Jesus (to remove) racism and other-isms that separate us.”Prayer partners are encouraged to meet weekly to pray by phone together and once a month in person. The second step is participation in upcoming prayer meetings that will be taking place in the Memphis area, where area coordinators have been assigned in Orange Mound, Whitehaven, Uptown, Midtown, Hickory Hill, East Memphis and Frayser as well as Bartlett, Collierville, Cordova, Germantown, Southeast Shelby County, Southaven, Miss., and Marshall County, Miss. Finally, Olford is asking for more black-white church partnerships, like those shared by Trinity Baptist and Morning Chapel, Bellevue Baptist and Impact Ministries, and Central Church and Mt. Moriah East Baptist, just to name a few.A Rainbow of FaithsAccording to the Web site (www.redemption2009.com), movement leaders, volunteers and participants are “Godly women with hearts burning to see evangelical Christians of different races unite to further God’s kingdom (who) have been dreaming and praying and planning …to see revival sweep the Mid-South…. Churches will come together for Redemption 2009 to create a catalyst for unity and reconciliation among sisters in Christ, spanning generations, evangelical backgrounds, neighborhoods, cultures and races.”The unity among sisters was evident as dozens of women stopped by the Marriott Hotel’s Magnolia Grille, across the street from the convention center, to eat before for the conference. Black women and white women sat together at tables, engaged in both light and meaningful conversations.Young women from Fellowship Memphis were among restaurant-goers. Group leader Suzanne Presley said 100 members of the multicultural church were attending the revival and they were expecting a “word from the Lord.”“We’ve just been praying for it,” said Ariyana Rimson.RevivalIn addition to first-rate expository teaching, Redemption 2009 showcased contemporary and hard-core gospel music. Priscilla Shirer’s brother, recording artist Anthony Evans and his band performed contemporary gospel, such as “You Are Good,” “Everlasting God,” and “Mighty to Save.”Grammy-nominated gospel vocalist Beverly Crawford brought the hard-core gospel with “If the Lord Never Does Anything Else” and other songs.Ephie Johnson directed the Unity Choir, a city-wide group from 30 churches that performed and backed up Crawford and Evans. A member of Hope Presbyterian and director of Neighborhood Christian Centers, Johnson said the choir has 115 members. Her participation extends beyond the choir , however, as she has several prayer partners, including Kelly Johnson, executive director of Two by Two Ministry. who is 40 and Ephie’s same age; Lucy Long, a 50-something and Carlee Pettis, 70. “They influence me in my walk with Christ,” said Johnson. For her part, the Unity choir director is well ready for a Memphis revival. “This is an integral moment. People are ready to rise up and be a city of pride, leadership and unity.”“My goal is to encourage and help Memphis sing again,” said Johnson, who is the daughter of JoeAnn Ballard and has been directing choirs since age 13.“In some ways, we lost our song.”

It's The Passion Behind The Product That Matters

Hello Fellow Sisterprenuers,I have not spent much time here as yet since I've been busy recreating myself and my business. You know we have to look at ourselves every now and then and assess where we've been and where we're headed. Having my head in the game, so to speak, has inspired me to think about why I do what I do. This is the question, I believe, that will keep us fueled and inspired to keep going: what is the passion behind my product?I recently ran across a web site that talked about the value of operating from our hearts instead of our heads. I think that it is easy as business women to get a little caught up in the "gotta go and do" syndrome. I gotta go here, gotta go there, gotta call this one, gotta email that one, gotta sell, sell, sell, gotta network, and on and on. Well, yes of course there are many business related activities we are responsible for. However it is equally important to regularly reflect on why we do what we do.What else can motivate us when we are feeling a bit down or even a little pessimistic and lacking in confidence? Nothing can truly motivate us towards any gratifying action except for the "why" behind what we do. Have you ever had a meal prepared by someone who really didn't enjoy cooking? Well, chances are, the food was a bit boring or perhaps just uninspired. We like food that is prepared by someone who knows that the most important ingredient in food preparation is LOVE. This, I believe, is true for every endeavor. There must be love, purpose and passion as the driving force, otherwise our work or our "product" becomes bland, tasteless, and uninspired. My purpose is to help women build businesses and lives that they can feel good about. I am creating a community of phenomenal women: women who will commit to supporting one another, to encouraging one another and inspiring one another to live a joyful and success-filled life. I believe that our ultimate success comes about from building relationships that matter - not just selling products. So, please share with me. What is the love and passion that sparked your product? Mine is the desire to see ALL women realize their innate value and purpose in the world and help them create lives that are successful in every area. At one point in my life, I struggled to connect with my worth and my purpose. Now, there is no doubt in my mind that everyone who breathes deserves to live a happy, healthy and success-filled life, no matter what.Peace & Blessings,MelindaJoin The Butterfly Circle Women's Networkhttp://thebutterflycircle.com

Too busy to live?

Are you too busy to live?Every year Americans die from a lack of proper management andcare for our health . I know you don't have time to take a 20minute walk at least 2 times per week. It's too much to take time toplan my meals so that I don't consume too much food with empty calories,or overwork your heart with saturated fats.....sure we only live onceand must enjoy ourselves with over indulgence with desserts, fats, carbohydrates, sodas, fries, burgers, alcohol and...need I say more?Read the following study done by HHS' Centers for DiseaseControl and Prevention (CDC)...........Mortality for several leading causes of death declined in 1999,according to preliminary figures from HHS' Centers for DiseaseControl and Prevention (CDC), released today by HHS SecretaryTommy G. "You don't have to work up a big sweat at the gym or becomea long-distance runner. Just 30 minutes of walking a day, five days a week, can significantlyimprove your health. FOUR SECRETS TO A SUCCESSFUL JOINT VENTURE

Four Secrets to a Successful Joint VentureEvery successful Joint Venture should include a Clear Objective, The Right Partner, A Great Plan, Good Management.1. Objective - Have a clear objective. You should know what you want to accomplish right from the beginning. The company that you partner with will want to know and see that you are clear about what you want to accomplish by partnering with them. Be aware that your joint venture partner may not have the same objective as you, which is fine as longs as they compliment each others.2. Choosing the right joint venture partner is very important. The right partner in your joint venture will create a win win situation for both parties or all parties involved. You need to take ample time to search out and find the right partner / company that has similar objectives to yours and one that is interested in going into a joint venture. Some businesses might want to joint venture, but don’t have the same objective as you and their objective do not compliment yours. This is not and will not be a good joint venture for you…Move on from this one if you should come across it. You want to find a company or business partner that have an interest in going into a joint venture and that have objectives that are similar to your or that at least compliment yours. If you come across this person, a joint venture could be considered. What both parties want should come into alignment with each other, so not to clash with one another later.3. Have a great plan for your venture. Work out how you are going to go about negotiating and Continue

A Prescription for What Ails Sisters

Sisters, if you are stressed out, your self-confidence has taken a vacation and you are not where you want to be in life, just remember that our lives are a series of ebbs and flows. We, as Black women, must continue to do 3 things:1. Believe that we are worth "it" whatever "it" is for you. "It" could be a successful business, successful romantic relationship, our dream home, our dream career, good health, more money than we know what to do with - the list is endless.2. Stop being afraid or too proud to ask for help. All you have to do is ask. More people will say "yes" than those who will say "no." Those who say "no" are not meant to be a part of your success.3. Stop worrying. Ten years ago I heard author Iyanla Vanzant speak in Atlanta and I took shorthand (yea, I'm that old) notes during her talk; still have the notes and you know what she said about worrying? Do you remember as a kid in school when they told us in case our clothes catch on fire, we are to stop, drop, and roll? Well, whatever is worrying you (which manifests itself as low self-confidence) stop worrying, drop trying to figure it out or work it out and roll it into God's hands. This is Dr. Carmin's prescription for what ails me and my sisters.Carmin Wharton is a home-based business expert and the founder of e-BlackWomenNetwork.com, a membership community designed to take businesses owned by women of color from start up to prosperity. Carmin's mission is to help women earn what they're worth and make it big in their home-based business on their own terms.

A Bird’s Eye View on Wedding Dresses

A Bird’s Eye View on Wedding DressesHow this Photographer sees it

The Wedding dress is one of the most important details of the day. Everyone wonders “what is the bride wearing”? “What is she going to look like”? Therefore having seen hundreds of wedding dresses as the owner of a photography business I wanted to give some thoughts and advice that I hope will be considered regarding this most photographed item on the wedding day.Let’s start with that trip to the bridal salon, I recently spoke at a seminar and mentioned that mothers are probably not the best person for the bride to take when shopping for her wedding gown unless mom is a fashion icon and she knows a lot about wedding dresses. I felt like that woman in the bible who had just been caught in the act of adultery, I really thought I was going to be stoned to death, a few of the mothers in that room were more than a little annoyed with me. .My point simply was that mothers are often driven by emotions, this after all is their baby getting married and they may be a bit overwhelmed by all of the details involved in selecting the one item that sets the Maybe your mom didn’t have the wedding of her dreams but wants that for you; it is only natural that she will be a touch emotional, mom may not see that her daughter may spend the big day looking like a gigantic wedding cake, or a throw back from the Victorian era. stage for this big dayAdditionally the bride is often under enormous pressure to make others happy and may not have the intestinal fortitude it takes to stand up to mom and say I don’t want this, especially if mom and dad are shelling out any of the money for the wedding.Obviously not every dress looks great on every one, you must consider your height, weight, complexion, hair & eye coloring when you make this significant purchase. Would your body type look great in a strapless dress or a ball gown? Would your skin coloring favor white, ivory or eggshell or another color? Do you like beading if so how much? What about lace? What about the fabric? Chiffon or satin? What fabric works best for you? Trying on several different styles of wedding gowns, made by a variety of manufacturers can give you a great sense of what is available in the market place. The things I havementioned are but a few of the many considerations in selecting this garment. Finally you may have to make alterations make sure to ask the bridal salon what they can and cannot do. You must be precise and specific about what must be done to avoid very costly mistakes especially in the area of alterations. Brides go alone, or take a very trusted friend not the whole crew of screaming girlfriends with you to the bridal salon. You may also keep in mind that loved ones and friends won’t want to hurt your feelings about how you look as you try on your wedding gown. You may also keep in mind that loved ones and friends won’t want to hurt your feelings about how you look as you try on your wedding gown. A quick note most salons have a sales staff that will give good advice but keep in mind that the salon is in business to make money.Don’t make the decision in a hurry; don’t buy the first thing you try on, and for heaven’s sake don’t just try on one dress. When selecting your wedding dress also consider the season of your wedding. A sleeveless dress in February in Aspen probably won’t cut it, so don’t forget the time and season of the year. Best wishes on finding the dress that best represents who you are on that all important day.Go to the shop when you’re restedGo when the shop is slow, take a day off work if necessary, Friday evenings and Saturdays are almost always busy and you may not get the kind of service you requirePlease have the right undergarments when you go, most shops have the proper bras but it would be worth the investment for you to buy one for the purpose of trying on gownsOnce you make the decision on the dress come prepared to put a deposit on the gown.Other Points for Great Wedding Day Photos:Rest the night before the wedding puffy eyes show in photosGet a great makeup artistGet something to eat; a hungry bride is not a happy brideHire a wedding planner at least for the day of, stress really does show in photosRelax and have a great day! This article provided by Carla Rein of MorningStar Photography to reach MorningStar go towww.morningstarphotography.com

Expert Wedding Photographer Balks at the Idea of a Lack of Diversity in Wedding IndustryMorningstar Photography Says Black, Indian and Asian Women Get Married Too

Columbia, MD (BlackNews.com) - While weddings are their expertise, many major celebrities and notables such as baseball Hall of Famer Dwight Gooden, iconic anchorman Roger Mudd, Republican National Committee Chairman Michael Steele, Congressman Elijah Cummings, and Hollywood producer Cleveland O'Neil have all found their way in front the lens of a MorningStar photographer. While serving every possible client MorningStar has broken away from the herd and focused primarily on the ethnic client. "There is an assumption out there that Black, Indian and Asian women don't get married as frequently as everyone else, it may be statistically true but it is not borne out by the people who come to us."Gone are the days of the couple looking longingly into each other's eyes. Today MorningStar Photography focuses on the nuances of the wedding day: mothers who cry, bridesmaids who aren't always happy at the altar, an engagement ring on the heel of a bride's shoe, a bride's expression as her sorority sisters wish her the best for her future. These are the memories that make each wedding unique, and that MorningStar strives to capture.Focusing on ethnic weddings as a niche market has allowed MorningStar to blaze a trail in the past ten years producing eye-popping images for the client, no matter who they are. High end boutique photography is available for the senator's daughter as well as the sanitation worker's daughter. MorningStar has spectatcular packages for almost every budget. While MorningStar focuses on a diverse clientele, the owners of this company also represent the America that Barack Obama hopes for and would be most proud of. Alan Rein, a Jewish man, and his wife, Carla, who was born in Trinidad, are the driving force behind the day-to-day operations of this small, hands-on, thriving enterprise. The Reins know diversity because they live it in their everyday lives.Carla commented "We don't do fast food photography, it takes time and patience to create beautiful images. It's the eye behind the lens that matters most, not a photographer's ability to Photoshop."MorningStar Photography recently did a showcase at the Gathering Place in Clarksville, MD where potential clients were able to view MorningStar's immense catalog of work.MorningStar can be reached directly at www.morningstarphotography.com or to schedule an appointment with MorningStar simply call in the Balto-DC Metro area 410-730-7515 or 1-888-294-1417 toll free. What goes on Behind the Scenes for the Modeling Agent

25 FEB 09I want to provide a little insight for you, as to what goes on behind the scenes when as your agent…by Pamela Young ,CEO, MODELS PLUS INTERNATIONAL LLCWWW.MPI365.ORGI want to provide a little insight for you, as to what goes on behind the scenes when as your agent, I am booking modeling/acting jobs. As you are probably aware by now, MPI is the largest and most successful model and talent booking agency in the Southwestern United States of America, representing Plus-sizes for PRINT MEDIA, FASHION, RUNWAY, TV AND FILM PROECTS.WE ARE LICENSED AND BONDED AS AN EMPLOYMENT AGENCY.To help you put that into prospective, or to help you better understand, exactly, what it is we do, when we go to work booking modeling/acting jobs for you, think of it like this.Models Plus International, is just like an employment agency, again we are licensed and bonded as an employment agency, the only difference is when you think employment agency you think of filling temp positions on a clerical staff, at MPI we provide "temp positions" in the Entertainment Industry.First of all , we have 14 years of positioning and placement of ourselves as leaders in the Entertainment industry for providing quality plus people! So we are literally at the fingertips, in any resource guide or internet directory, for any client in the Entertainment industry who needs to hire Plus sizes, for their projects. Therefore, our day might start out with a phone call from a client who simpy says, "WE ARE LOOKING FOR 4 OR 5 MODELS, SIZES 12-18, FOR OUR BRIDAL EXPO BEING HELD AT THE MAGIC SHOW IN LAS VEGAS."That's when the excitement begins, I pull out a form known as a "Booking Assignment Form", this way after all the blanks are filled in, I pretty much know what this client wants and which of my Models/Actors to call, to hopefully fill the position.I go on to ask the client, the dates, the times, the locations, the job description, and exactly what is expected of the model/talent to make the booking assignment a complete success! I make it goal to become a friends with this client, so they will call MPI the next time they need anything in the entertainment industry. We have serveral clients who come to Phoenix each year, several times a year and call MPI, such as Catherine's Department Stores, Torrid, The Avenue, Fashion Bug, Dress Barn, just to name a few.Additionally, If travel is involved, most of the time, I persuade the client to pay the airfare. There have been a couple of times, however, THEY WILL NOT PAY THE AIRFARE BUT THEY AGREE TO PAY DOUBLE THE RATE I WOULD HAVE ASKED! SO THEN, THE AGENCY PAYS FOR THE AIRFARE AND WILL REIMBURSE THEMSELVES OUT OF THE MODELS PAY. ALL OF THIS IS DISCUSSED WITH THE MODEL.Once the terms are agreed upon, I BEGIN TO CALL MY MODELS (this is why it is imperative to keep your phone number & all information current with your Agent)! and hope I can find a MATCH! IF I CANNOT, I BEGIN TO ADVERTISE, LOOKING FOR THE MODEL WHO CAN FILL THIS POSITION.More times than not, WE ARE SUCCESSFUL and fill the position, (The client has the final say in choosing the Model/Actor). Once that's done, WE CALL THAT A WIN, WIN SITUATION. THE CLIENT WINS, THE AGENCY WINS AND THE MODEL WINS!These client phone calls, emails or walk-ins, happen as few as 4 times a day, and as many as 10 times a day, depending on the season. For example Summer time in Arizona leads to very few calls for outdoor magazine photo shoots, or TV/Film projects for that matter (which is why we encourage you to update your photos and enroll in training workshops during the Summer, so you can be ready for "Job Bookings" in the upcoming season). It's During the Fall and Spring seasons, some Magazines, shoot all of their catalog layouts for the rest of the year, in Arizona, because it may be and most likely is, snowing in their city!I sincerely hope this helps you see a different side of the business!Best Wishes,Pamela A.
