5 Reasons to File Your Business Tax Return This Year

Over the years, I have had the privilege of consulting many first time business owners. One of the most common concerns that comes up is the fear of owing taxes on the money they earn. So many cash based business owners avoid taxes altogether. If you're considering ignoring taxes this year, here are five reasons to file a return for your business.

1. Retirement Savings

In order to save for retirement you must know how much money you're making in business. This not only requires good money management but tax strategies, as well. A component of funding your retirement includes credits to your social security account. When you're self-employed, the payments that you make for Self-Employment tax are reported when you file your tax return. No return, no credit.

2. Business Opportunities

There are instances where tax returns are a requirement to business growth. If you are considering applying for certain business certifications, loans, or grants, for example, you will need proof of running a legitimate company. Certifications can open doors of opportunity to larger contracts and more income. However, one requirement of most applications is a filed income tax return.

3. Refundable Credits

A common tax myth that business owners have involves reporting zero income or net losses. However, you may be surprised at the tax benefits even when there is little or no profit to report. The Earned Income Credit, for example, is a refundable credit that can put between $457 to $5,666 in your pocket. If you qualify, the refund is extra money that you can use to grow your business or take a much-needed vacation. The choice is up to you.

4. Easy to Do

There are many options that make it convenient to file a tax return. Some choices include Do-It-Yourself tax software, electronic filing, and paid tax preparers who will prepare the return for you. Each of these are designed to take you through the process with ease.

Aside from the benefits above, another important reason to file is tax compliance. As a person earning taxable income you are responsible for filing a timely income tax return each year. Failure to do so can lead to late filing fines, penalties, and possible time in prison.

Make Charitable Contributions
Consider making charitable contributions before year-end both to obtain the maximum tax deduction and to fulfill any charitable programs or commitments you may have established.

Buy a New Car
If you need a new car, now is a great time to purchase or lease. Frequently, dealers are anxious to clear out last year's inventory prior to year-end. In making your choice, consider the federal tax (and occasional state tax) advantages for buying fuel-efficient vehicles.

Examine Investments
Examine your current investments to determine those with unrealized losses. Consider selling those investments to take the loss this year. You can deduct up to $3,000 in capital losses in excess of capital gains. However, do not let the tax savings outweigh the investment potential. You might consider "swapping" for a similar company in the same industry if you like the potential of the industry.

Pay Tax-Deductible Expenses
Consider paying tax-deductible expenses prior to year-end. Some common examples are real estate taxes, quarterly state or local income taxes, investment-related expenses, and dues. These must be paid by December 31 to obtain a deduction this year. Professional guidance will be helpful here, so please call us.

How would you like to increase your bottom line? One way to increase yourbottom line is by adding income streams. I’m going to share with youpossible income streams. You don’t have to be stuck with one way ofbringing in revenue. There are ways to monetize your efforts.

Here are a few options.

Public Speaking
You can reach more people in a short period of time when you You can getyour message out to them about the solutions you provide. It’s also away for them to get to know you up close and personal.

When approaching this income stream it’s good to come up with your topic. Determine the results you want.

Simplify. You don’t have to go in depth.
Introduce your topic – Share the content and then summarize what you’ve said and close with how you can support them.

You might want to introduce your free offer. Free consult, free tips page.You can also have a free drawing by collecting business cards and letthem know that they’ll receive updates from you.

One essential thing is follow up. Develop a system for following up with individuals.

The one to many model. This is where you’re leveraging your time byworking with groups. Some examples would be my Teleseminars, BoostCamp, live workshops, Make it Happen “30 Days of Empowerment” Mentoring program.

This is a good model for two reasons you’re able to offer your program tomore people and charge less for your time and you can also turn theminto passive income when you record them.

PDFs,Audios,membership programs etc. These are also called passive income because you create it once and sell it over and over again.

I’d suggest that you start with what you’re most comfortable with. Are youcomfortable with writing? You could start off with writing a specialreport. Do you have tips or articles that you’ve posted? How about blogposts with a similar theme? You can compile these and create a specialreport. Are you better with speaking? Use sites likewww.freeconferencecall.com to record yourself and create an audioseries.

My husband is the active income earner in our family & with the active income comes the days and weeks without him home (one reason I am a stay at home mother). I have worked for active income and while I like the camaraderie I cannot say I always liked how my life was dictated in an effort to earn that active income; the late hours or working on Saturdays, the do more with less attitude. There are some items though that I do not want to give up to be a stay at home mother, things some say are impossible to have as a stay at or work from home mother. That is crap!Have you said year after year that you want to take the kids to Disneyland? Or maybe another house? Maybe all you want is to be able to get a paycheck and not have it already claimed by bills. We set a GOAL and it is kinda high up there.The major reason for setting a goal is for what it makes of you to accomplish it.
