Many of us walk around marketing our personal brand by the seat of our pants. It may not be intentional, but there are things we do daily that demonstrate who we are to prospective clients, co-workers, managers, and colleagues.

I have really begun to mentally process how the discipline of marketing a business and many of the principles that come with it are just as critical for personal success.

There is great value in developing a personal brand marketing strategy that helps you stand out, and that makes you more credible in the eyes of your select audience. Unfortunately, it is way too easy to ignore because of competing priorities for our time.

Here is a short list of though provoking questions and action plans for you relevant to your personal marketing strategy:

  • Do you have a personal brand marketing plan or do you personally market yourself unintentionally?
  • If you have a brand marketing plan, does it include specific promotional activities and are these tied to events?
  • Have you taken the time to identify a target customer, or employer? What desired characteristics have you named?
  • Does your personal brand strategy identify ways to sell to and maintain your current clients while attracting new ones?
  • What are the demographics of your key prospects? What makes you distinctly different, or unique as compared to your competitors?
  • What is your personal brand marketing budget? How will you distribute these funds?
If any of these stump you, now is a great time to consider your next steps. Creating a personal brand strategy can be just as important for you in this day and age, as a company’s marketing strategy.

Everyone is an expert at something - whether you know how to marketthat knowledge or not is the key to creating an expert personal brand.
Wikipedia describes an expert as "a person with extensive knowledge or
ability based on research, experience, or occupation and in a particular
area of study". I have invested in a number of programs, courses,
books, and live presentations over the last several years. All of this
because I believed the facilitator to be an "expert" who could share
information with me that I did not already know.
How is it that some people become recognized as the expert and others,
who may have more information and knowledge about the same topic, do
not?
Three things in general distinguish people who get to wear the expert label:
They are clear on what they believe. Experts tend to rise to this title
because they have taken a stance or a position on something within an
area of study. For example, Dr. Wayne Dyer is a well-known expert in the
field of self development. Dyer has certain principles he believes. It
is clear that part of his message is that each of us is accountable to
our own success and growth. Carole Martin, the Interview Coach, is an
expert in her area. She has developed clear steps to preparing for an
interview.
They tell other people what they believe. People who are recognized as
experts do not keep their beliefs to themselves. Instead, they
communicate a message in some type of written, visual, or auditory form
so that others know their principles. It is one thing to have a thought -
it's another level when you share the thought with someone else. And
the wider your net, the higher and faster you rise to the top as an
expert brand. Dyer and Martin could simply have their beliefs about
steps to take and principles to apply, but until these were shared as
messages to others, no one would have recognized them as a possible
resource.
They are consistent in telling other people what they believe. Having
an expert brand means you are consistent with the beliefs you share with
others. If you say one thing today and have a completely opposite
message next week, it will take away from the credibility of your
personal brand. Consider this example - John Maxwell is seen as an
expert in applying leadership strategies based in Christian principles.
If next month, he came out with a book about loving life as an atheist,
Maxwell's credibility as an expert may drop considerably.

Having a well thought out personal brand strategy is the fastest and best way to promote yourself in any career.

There are, however, 3 key mistakes many professionals make with their brand that keep them from advancing further in their career.

Personal Brand Mistake #1 - Failure to think like an entrepreneur at work. These days it's now more important than ever to recognize that things aren't like they used to be. Whether you work for someone else or not, do not make the mistake of having an employee mindset - you are self-employed.

What to do instead - To boost your perceived value at work so that you are top choice for the best job opportunities, it's time you start thinking like a business owner. Be an independent thinker, offer creative solutions, and always think a couple of steps ahead, strategically positioning yourself for the next action in case (B) happens instead of (A). Get noticed for your ability to be a results-driver who is adaptable to change, because change is happening faster and bigger these days.

Personal Brand Mistake #2 - Failure to track your own accomplishments and articulate them well. You can not rely on your manager to understand the work you do, or to know when recognition is warranted.

What to do instead - Keep track of accomplishments, praise reports, and great results you have achieved with and for your business partners. When the time comes to sit down for that next performance review, be ready to list out how well you have contributed to the company's overall goals. And if that performance review somehow does not get scheduled? Make an appointment yourself to meet with the manager and share your accomplishments, in a way that boosts their confidence in your work as an achiever. This record will also be great for your portfolio when it's time to move on.

Personal Brand Mistake #3 - Failure to connect with people who can be champions for your success. It's great to spend time with your colleagues at work - after all, we spend a large part of the week there. But many people mistake this group as their group of supporters.

What to do instead - Make sure you are connecting with people of influence outside of your normal circle. Tap into knowledge and experience that will help you broaden your thinking. Share solutions and creative ideas when you meet with mentors - formally or informally. They might just be your champion behind the scenes when you need it most.

How to Find a Mentor

iStock_000009172087XSmall-150x150.jpgI replied to a question this week on LinkedIn and thought I’d share my thoughts with you on the topic of mentoring. Here is a short excerpt from the comment and subsequent question submitted:

“I don’t know how to navigate the professional world. It is like I am an outsider looking in. As an African American woman, I don’t have any willing connections in my family. I am actively networking, taking classes to gain new skills, writing blogs, and interning; this way I can groom myself into the professional I want to be…”

My answer went like this:

Thank you for your note & for expressing your challenges so honestly. I will share that I have been mentored and I have mentored. In most cases where I was on the receiving end, I actively pursued the
relationship. There have been both good AND bad experiences on either
side – I chose to learn from both.

One of the conversations that came out of the recent Women of Color Career Success telesummit I hosted focused on the topic of mentoring and where to find them. There were 3 strategies highlighted from the panel:

  1. Pursue mentoring relationships with people who already at a level for which you are aspiring – seeking a combination of mentors with similar backgrounds as you AND those who can share a completely
    different perspective;
  2. Peer-to-peer mentoring – reach out to positive, motivated colleagues and others within your field for idea/resource sharing; and
  3. “remote” mentoring – seek out books, presentations, and media that may have messages you can apply to your own situation for growth. If something really appeals to you, consider contacting the author, etc to
let them know how their ideas have helped you – social media really
opens possibilities here. You never know until you try.

“Mentoring” was very loosely defined in each case but the ultimate message was that you can learn from just about anyone’s experiences.

Lastly I will add these tips:

* Don’t be intimidated to ask anyone you have identified as a possible mentor for you. The worst they can do is say no. * You should not expect
someone else to invest in you what you don’t invest in yourself and
others. Definitely look at ways you can mentor and give back. * And if
you happen to run into that not-so-great experience, you can learn
lessons from that too. It just may be “what not to do”.

I hope others will chime in and offer their advice and perspectives on your questions.

Best success to you, Tanya

What are your thoughts around mentoring and what advice would you offer someone for finding a mentor?

What keeps you up at night?

Do you struggle with limiting beliefs?

Are you influenced by the thoughts of others about who you are and find that when you start trying to play a bigger game as a womanentrepreneur or make endeavors towards women’s empowerment you shrinkdown to make them feel comfortable?

Maybe you’re experiencing overwhelm and that your life is out of control leaving no time for the things that matter most. Or you workhard to have clients and customers but it seems that it’s not working.

Could you be in your own way and don’t even know it?

Take inventory of how you may be getting in your own way.
How do you do this? One thing that is very important to any endeavor
towards women’s empowerment, personal development etc. is to begin with you.

Take inventory of where you are. Assessments are key in this process.
One is a self discovery assessment. You discover more about yourself and
may uncover self sabotaging behaviors that you weren’t aware of. It is nota negative process, however, it helps you to also discover theuniqueness of you. Doing this assists you in developing a plan for bestpractices to achieve what it is you desire. It also assists inuncovering the blocks.

2. Acknowledge the truth.
You may have already arrived at the a fore-mentioned , however, maybe your challenge is that you are indenial. You cannot correct or change what you don’t acknowledge. Youcannot change what you tolerate.

3. Move past the pain of your past. One area that I’m passionate about is helping women to get unstuck. How long have you been feelinglike you have? How long have you followed the same system with noresults? How long have you been struggling to become confident? Thepain of your past will imprison you.

You wonder why you tend to reach an impasse when trying to reach your goals. There are many reasons for this, however, one is movingpast the pain of your past. Of course there are issues that need to beaddressed and you seek closure, however, do not pitch a tent there.Work through it and move on. In this area it is also critical that youdon’t take on the victim mentality. Everything that comes out of yourmouth is how they did you. You don’t understand. I can’t do thisbecause I’m still hurt because. If you’re going to realize trueprosperity “Spirit, Soul and Body” you’ve got to move on!!!

I’ll go over this in the upcoming Empowerment Gathering live here in Sacramento, CA.

I’ve given you three things you need to do to start the process of getting out of your own way.

Your Ning Page Done Your Way

Did you know you can change the order of the content on your personal Ning page? I'm sure many of you do, but one thing that I've noticed is that a lot of pages I visit keep the content in the order that Ning provides.

When you first join a Ning network, you are given a standard personal page, but you are not restricted to displaying your content in this order. With a little bit of tweeking to your personal Ning page, you can more-effectively show who you are and what you do.

After you have selected a color theme/background and added your photo/image, it is important that you rearrange your content so visitors can immediately see you. Ning breaks up the content into categories such as "Latest Activity," "Comment Wall," and "Profile Information." Your Profile Information box contains all the important information about who you are -- your company name, website, bio, and links to connect on social media sites. Ning places this section near the bottom of your page, but this information should be at or near the top. It should be one of the first things your visitors see.

If you are blogging on your Ning network, your blog section should also be near the top of your page. I like mine under my profile.

In addition to these two sections, it is a good idea to add sections with your photos and/or videos.

Ning has a link in the left column for "+ Apps." These are various applications you can add to your page to make it more interactive. The app called "My Text Box" allows you to add extra sections to your page to include customized content. You can include more photos, video, widgets, etc. HTML is allowed. Type "my text box" into the search box to locate this app. On my page, I've used this app to add a banner linked to my website and a short description about myself, and I've placed this section first on my page above my profile information and photos.

I choose to put the "Latest Activity" and "Gifts Received" sections at the very bottom of my page below the comments, but you may prefer to have it in a different position on your page.

There are many ways to configure your personal Ning page. Do restrict yourself to what you've been given. I hope that this post is beneficial in helping you to organize your Ning page.

Anatomy of a Personal Brand Strategy - Part I

Personal brand marketing is a solid career management technique. When you are doing the work to clearly identify your personal brand - or theoverall collection of perceptions that you want others to have aboutyou - it may not be as simple as jotting down a few notes on a memo pad.

Developing a personal brand strategy that describes the irresistible, brilliantyou can take some work, but once you have it, you can apply the piecesto everything you communicate - e.g. resume, interview remarks, onlinemedia, etc.

Below, I will share with you some of the components I used in developing my own brand marketing statement.

Here are the first five concepts to focus on with a brief definition ofeach, and an example taken from my own personal brand library:

  • Objective - what outcome are you trying to achieve for yourself or for your targetaudience (e.g. To develop highly successful, professional women of colorto be competitors for advanced leadership positions.)
  • Core message - the primary mindset that you want anyone who comes in contact withyou to adopt (e.g. You can successfully advance your career when youincrease your brand visibility in a smart, authentic, and consistentway.)
  • Target audience - who do you want to share the message with (e.g. Professional women of color, age 30-55,seeking career advancement, career change, or business start-up.)**Later, we can talk about who the ideal client is for you within thistarget - yes, there is a distinction.
  • Brand Statement - what do you do and who do you work with (e.g., I work with professionalwomen of color seeking career advancement or transitioning into solobusiness. I show them how to develop a brand strategy for their careerthat connects them with their target audience & key influencers.)
  • Unique position - what makes you different than anyone else who does this work (e.g.,My strategy is based on a 60/40 combination of proven career managementtechniques and online brand expertise. I also have a powerhouse networkof branding resources to help my clients implement the plan once the itis put on paper.)

That's all for part one. Think about your answers in each area. If you work on this over the next week, you will have agreat start to developing your brilliant personal brand strategy.

Are you experiencing challenges and is just basically dealing with thechallenges sending you for a spin? You must remain focused regardlessof what you’re dealing with.

The road to women’s empowerment will involve holding on to two words:

Tenacity:Tough minded persistency non yielding…and tireless effort regardless ofobstacles, opposition and or other’s opinions.

There are so manyobstacles that come before you and hinder you especially during theeconomic times of challenge. You must have tough minded persistency andbecome a woman of tenacity. You must be if you’re going to achieve yourdreams, live an empowered life, be an extraordinary woman leading anextraordinary life. You have to have a non-yielding and tireless effortregardless of obstacles. That’s something I want you to hold on toregardless of obstacles and opposition and we have great oppositionespecially women of faith and/or other’s opinions the opinions ofothers the opinions of the world, the opinions of society where itconcerns our faith. Tenacity, hold on to that.

Another is the word resolve; unwavering committed mindset adhering to a bold decision and strategy.

SoI want you to hold onto those two words as we move on. It takes muchcourage to continue in the midst of crisis. It takes passion, faith andmotivation.

I looked up the word crisis and there are a couple of definitions and they include the following;

Acrucial or decisive point or situation a turning point. A traumatic orstressful change in a person’s life; it’s also a term meaning a testingtime or an emergency event.

What I’d like you to answer is howdo you respond to crisis or what should your response be? If you’regoing to embrace any level of empowerment you’re going to need to havetenacity and there should be a resolve. It’s also important to have theright mindset in order to keep moving forward during the time of crisisduring a testing time. There will be continuous testing times as youmove along your journey towards an empowered life. There’s no questionabout it, you will have testing times as you move up to new levelsthere will be new testing. Build safeguards so you stay focused and youstay along the course that’s been set for you and given the fact I’mtalking about focus in crisis, learn to focus.

One of thehardest things to do in life when an unexpected change orcircumstances, disappointment etc. come your way is to stay focused. You are either experiencing so much pain or you’re so overwhelmed thatthe event tries to take your full attention. So how can you continuealong your path so the goals that you’ve set the action steps you’veset that will lead you to that goal long term, short term? The eventtries to take your full attention. One thing for sure is that therewill be unexpected situations, and that’s just the way it is. There arechanges and disappointments that are sure to come your way. Theessential thing is to learn how to remain focused during these timesand it is a learned state. Losing your focus can immobilize you, bindyou and make you ineffective in your life.

Here’s one thing not to do:

Don’t panic!

Thisis number one here as this may be the natural response by most and thatis to Panic. When I heard the call from my daughter saying “mommy Ican’t see” my first inclination was to panic and then I gave the callto my husband so that I could regroup and reach into my Faith. Panicwill send you spiraling down a staircase of many emotions sending youdeeper and deeper into a mode of gloom and defeat. Below I share otherthings you must do to stay focused that you also must do that will fuelyour ability to resist the panic stage. Unless you make an agreementwith yourself that you will not panic the other keys may not be aseffective in your endeavor to learn skills to help you stay focused in crisis.

Ifyou’d like to know more about how to stay focused in crisis I inviteyou to secure a copy of my special report “How to stay focused incrisis.” I share many more tips and insights in this area. Learn more by clicking here.

You Couldn't Make it

Yes! they said you couldn't make it this far. Your business will fail. You will be back. You will not win. The people who are near and dear to you are also included in this negative talk. The so called friends; the ones you ask to attend the meetings with you and all of a sudden they had a prior engagement. Have you heard these words before. Surely, you have and that is why you became so determined to prove them wrong. You were determine to have the last laugh; because you knew what GOD placed within you no one can take away.Applaud yourself for taking a bold step towards school and graduating. Applaud yourself for taking courageous steps towards starting your business. Applaud yourself for taking the powerful steps towards your career. You did it and if your reaping the rewards righ now so be it because it was determined in your mind long time ago that this day would come. So, bask in your glory for you have earned it through sweat and tears. How did you do it? How did you stand and be counted? What were your solutions to getting it done? Well! First and foremost you trusted God when everything and everyone around you seemed unforgiving. Knowing that God was on your side sooth every cell within your being. Secondly, you knew you didn't want to be like the masses waiting for a handout. You had dreams that could not wait for someone else's approval, you had goals to reach therefore, you were determined to make it happen. Why, because a life unfulfilled is a life filled with coulda, shoulda, woulda's.So, you couldn't make it the way the others were making it, living from hand to mouth. You coudn't make it sitting in silence letting your desires burn into ashes. You coundn't make it throughout the day without accomplishing a thing, You couldn't make it without being of service to others. Why, because you are different; you are YOU!http://www.fallintoyou.com

Who are you? Do your clients, customers recognize who you are? Would prospects recognize who you are and become immediately attracted to you? Or would theyturn away because there's nothing for them to identify with.If you answered no or I don't know to the above it's time that you learnedmore about personal branding.Think about Johnson and Johnson, Pepsi,Joyce Meyer, Kelloggs they are all branded and all you have to do is say the word and people know exactly what you are talking about. Some more than others, however, there is branding involved. So you may be asking how do I begin building my personal brand?Personal branding is the process whereby people and their careers aremarked as brands. It has been noted that while previous self-helpmanagement techniques were about self-improvement, the personal brandingconcept suggests instead that success comes from self packaging. The termis thought to have been first used and discussed in an 1997 articleby Tom Peters,Your brand is how people think about you. Learning more about you, self discovery and assessment is key in beginning the process ofpersonal branding. This process also involves developing your vision, what makes you unique and how you can help others.Your vision is like a compass a guiding light. It helps us to stay focusedon our goals and plans in life. When taking on the endeavor to build your brand keep the following in mind....It's important to consider how you communicate visually, verbally andin writing. If you don't know you're actually branding yourself in yourblogging. You also make it easier to develop your marketing plan when you build yourpersonal brand. What makes you different or unique? How would you say people describe you or better yet how do you describe yourself?Do you know who your target market or audience is?Some may consider this your niche. So very important and no it doesn'tcut off your reach in essence it expands it because instead of grasping for strawsyou know where to put your focus. It's also key to discover your why. Why do you do what you do?What motivates you? What sets you apart?Do you have a creative angle to what you do?If you want to accelerate the process towards your empowering successit's important to start developing your personal brand.Who are you? Start taking notes and write down your values, what you'dlike to do in life, how you'd like to be seen, what sets you apart and thenuse some of this to develop your vision statement andyou'll be on your way to a definite brand of YOU inc.If you'd like more information on discovering your authentic self andgetting started on your personal branding contact me or get connectedwith my Inner Circle.

Accepting Success

Graciously accept your successes. Be thankful for every accomplishment and the achievement of goals that you have set. To achieve the true and pure feeling of gratitude you must give thanks for what it is that has come into your experience without criticism. It is often hard for us to not criticize or re-evaluate the path that has been traveled to success, and it’s especially hard to not criticize something we perceive to be a failure.Gratitude is first about the full acceptance of things, places, people and circumstances as they are. Secondly, it is about putting yourself at ease or in a state of comfort as it pertains to the object of your gratitude. When one begins to criticize the outcome of a thing they begin to mix good feelings with bad. This creates an inner turmoil that makes it impossible to be in alignment with the universe. When you are out of alignment with the universe it becomes harder to manifest that which you have asked for because your current vibration is competing with the things that you do not want.It is true that we should be grateful for all things that come into our experience. When we experience things that we do not like, it positions us to gain clarity on the things we do like and want. For this, we should be grateful. However, it is crucial that we are truly grateful for our successes because they are the “feel good” things of which we wish to have more. How can you expect to compound your successful actions if you are unable to remit your feelings happiness and gratitude for those things to the universe.Practice devoting your conscious thoughts to your success and be happy. Leave the “could haves”, “would haves” and “should haves” in the past. It is your feelings about the things that are happening today that will bring you more successes and happiness in the future. Your comfort with your success today will bring more successes in the future. Your criticisms about your success or lack there of will bring more of the same. It’s as simple as that. Graciously accept your successes and be proud of your accomplishments. After all, it is you and only you who possess the ability to call them into your life. Rejoice!

One of the biggest frustrations in internet marketing is that you have to sell thousands of $10-$20 ebooks each year in order to make a full-time living online. The logistics can be pretty daunting. There are a few ways to get over this hurdle.1. Reach more people. (Get more customers.)2. Write more ebooks. (Offer more low end products.)3. Offer a higher-end product or service that your existing customers can pay more for. (Charge more for... something.)Many people flinch at the third option. The thought of putting together a huge course or a big DVD package that they can sell for $100 or more sounds like a ton of work. However, in Jimmy D. Brown's usual way, he's found a way to help marketers earn more with their EXISTING business. That's the part that I love about this. It doesn't even entail setting up a new website. You can just add this to your current business and multiply your income immediately.what is it?Coaching. Personal one-on-one e-coaching.Jimmy's been doing this for years. And, every time he offers coaching, it sells out.Unfortunately, he found that offering email coaching can have a few problems. The main one is, of couse, email deliverability. It's obviously a problem if you offer e-coaching and then don't receive emails from your customer. So, Jimmy hired a software engineer and had him design a simple online interface so that he could communicate privately with his coaching clients inside this software. He's been making improvements to that same script, and now he's making it available for purchase. The first thing you'll want to do is check out the software http://infoprofitshare.com/go.php?offer=fmpollins&pid=12At the site, you'll see all of the features and even be able to even read the user manual before buying. If you've been thinking of adding a high-ticket item to your sales process or offering e-coaching, it just got easy.Best wishes,Frantonia PollinsWealth & Success Coach

Family Financial Season of Change

Life’s cycles are wonderful & mysterious. Throughout each season we experience the changes that the earth brings us in all its wonderment & splendor. With great expectation we prepare our households. Gathering and storing throughout the fall to prepare for the winter. Clearing and planting in preparation for the spring & summer. The understanding of these events will determine our mode of preparation for them.Spring is a time of renewal. As we clear the clutter in our home we should also clear the clutter in our financial lives. With tax season fast approaching, this is the opportune time to review & organize all records. Set up categories for all your expenditures & file your receipts based on these categories in a tickler file. The best approach is to automate your process. There are various programs, such as Quicken, Peachtree, & Microsoft Accounting, which are very user friendly and require minimum to no accounting knowledge. To manage the input of your receipts even further, utilize software for expense management such as Neat Receipts. This product will streamline the entire process and is easily integrated with other programs. Another important financial area to review would be insurance policies & retirement accounts. For your homeowner’s /renter’s policy, spring is a good time to take inventory, especially after the Christmas holiday purchases. If your policy does not provide a manual inventory spreadsheet, create one in Excel. It’s a good idea to update your inventory sheet quarterly, to cover purchases made throughout the year. Let’s not forget auto insurance. With summer fast approaching, this is the time to consider major repairs, in preparation for summer travel. Check your policy to make sure you have adequate coverage. If your vehicle is financed and will be paid off this year, you may consider changing from full coverage to only liability coverage. Consider factors such as the overall condition of your vehicle, listed drivers, & total mileage. A change in your premium could have a significant impact on your monthly budget. As for your retirement investments, the best practice is to review your investments monthly for performance, but try not to make changes to your portfolio more than on a quarterly basis. However, expect an annual review from your insurance agent or financial advisor. As experts in their fields, your Advisor will determine the best possible balance of securities in their corresponding industries. Your investment style & history, which is generally gathered prior to you initiating the account, is the basis of all decisions made by your Investment Advisor. A good Advisor will operate under your discretion and comfort level. What about your taxes? Because this subject can be very expansive, I will only mention briefly some important points to help you manage the “mayhem” during this period. Most people operate under the mindset to file their taxes in a manner to produce the largest refund. This is not necessarily a good idea. Don’t depend on your tax refund to cover living expenses. That’s what a savings account is for. The IRS does not pay you interest for the money it refunds to you. Technically, you are giving the IRS an interest free loan throughout the year. Wouldn’t you rather have those funds available to use at your discretion? Maintaining an effective budget will help to alleviate the stress of unwelcomed financial disasters. So, here are some simple guidelines to follow that can minimize your refund. Monitor your exemptions claimed on your W-4. The more exemptions you claim, the less taxes your pay into the system, and vise versa. If you decide to claim more than required exemptions for your situation, only do it for 6 months. Therefore, every six months you should be reviewing your W-4 exemptions. This may help to level the playing field a little. Also, be sure to maximize your deductions & tax credits. Most people miss out on common items such as educational deductions, capital losses on investments, retirement contributions, etc. The best way to gain a little knowledge and insight into taxes is to purchase a tax manual from your local book store, such as the “Dummies” series. These guides are an easy read, and clearly break down all categories of deductions & tax credits possibly available.Well, now that we’ve cleaned out the ember s of our attics, let’s get to work on our financial success!
