What every busy entrepreneur needs to know about building a highly profitable list

Is Your List Making You Money?

It seems like a funny thing to ask, I know. But, the mantra "the money is in the list" has us slapping opt-in boxes on our web pages and waiting for the money to roll in.

How's that working for you? I know it did not work well for me until I had this epiphany.

The money is not in just having a list; it's in the relationship you build with them.

A list is just that, a list of people who have given you permission to market to them. So, the key to unlocking the money making potential you hear so much about requires you to market.

And for most entrepreneurs, that's easier said than done.

Why does it seem so easy for our marketing heroes and professional crushes to make money their lists while you struggle to build yours?

The truth is it isn't a matter of hard or easy, It comes down to strategic and consistent execution until you find what works for you and your subscribers.

So, how can you build a list that is a win - win for you and your subscribers?

Here are a few tips to help ensure you build a list of responsive subscribers, ready to take action on what you have to say & sell:

#1. Get In Tune with Your Ideal Customer's Deepest Challenges and Desires

If you don't get this right, fuuuget about it! And it's not enough to know this intuitively, especially if you're just starting out. You need to deliberately research this information and keep a running list you can reference on an ongoing basis. This will not only help you hit the bull’s-eye with the next tip, but also when it comes to your follow-up campaign.

#2. Create a Compelling Signature Lead Magnet or Opt-In Gift

Make the right first impression. Your lead magnet should be both relevant and helpful to your visitors and be a natural first step to doing business with you. Gone are the days people signed up for stuff just because it's FREE. These days people's email in-boxes overflow with hundreds of messages from people who want them to sell something, read something, and do something!

Use this criterion as a general guide:

  • Is this something I feel confident about referring my offline networking connections to?
  • Is this something that people would gladly pay money for if it were for sale?
  • Is it a natural first step to working with me?
  • Is it a good introduction to my core offerings?

If you are a little shaky on any of the above questions, look at ways to change or improve your offering so you feel confident about marketing it and driving traffic to it.

#3. Provide One-Time-Offers on Your Thank You/Download Page

The "Thank You" page is the least utilized web real estate. It offers a great opportunity for you to offer your new subscriber an opportunity to solve their problem at a higher level. And, it provides you an opportunity to make a sale. They are the most excited and engaged at this point so now's the time to give them a deal on a product or service they won't want to refuse.

#4. Identify & Tell Your Subscribers What to Do Next

Be sure to build into your opt-in process, instructions on what to do next. To make this the most effective, you'll want to build this call to action into your opt-in offer itself. If you are providing a report, insert your call to action in the beginning and at the end of your report. If you free offer is a video or audio series, be sure to end each session with your call to action.

Don't assume they will go back to your site to buy something or read something. Show them that you have taken the time to guide them towards getting the results they need.

#5. Create Effective Follow Up and Nurturing Email Campaigns

"What do I write about?" This is the reason most entrepreneurs aren't making money. You have to build the know, like and trust factor and train your subscribers to act on what you have to say and sell.

I recommend when you create your opt-in gift/lead magnet. Write you first 10 follow up messages at the same time. Otherwise, it may never get done.

Here's a sample sequence you can use to get started:

  • Email 1 - Welcome and set expectations
  • Email 2-9 - Give incredible value
  • Email 10 - Sell them something

Don't forget to work in a pitch every now and then. It's okay if you have been adding value, they will be hungry for it.

Examine your opt-in process and use the above tips to implement or improve your list building results. Understand that building a highly profitable list may take some testing and work. But, if you commit to the process, it will be well worth the reward in the end.

Are You Dreaming?

From guest blogger: Victoria Garrison

"A dream is a wish your heart makes..." These words represent the first lines of the popular Disney song from the movie Cinderella. They tell the story of how a dream turned a young woman from an indentured servant to a princess in what is easily one of the most well-known fairytales ever told. Ah, but I know what you're thinking: life isn't a fairytale. And the lyrics to that song are little more than just a catchy tune that replays in our heads and reminds us of childhood. Well, I'm not suggesting we all head outdoors to sing and dance with the birds and solicit help from the mice to complete our house chores. But I do wonder, how many people have given up on "the dream"?  How many people no longer believe in the power of  a dream, a wish, a prayer, or a hope? It's no wonder we lose our dreams; just watch the news for about ten minutes and you'll be halfway to depleted of all hope. But what if people stopped allowing outside influences to affect or dissuade their dreams? Imagine the overflow of purpose and drive that leads to the ultimate freedom of an abundant life!

It's safe to dream again. It's safe to open yourself up to the limitless possibilities of life, to make a wish in your heart, say a prayer in your spirit, lift up a vision for your life. It's safe! Drop your baggage, your past, and your skeptical outlook on life at the dumpster of a dissatisfied life. It's time-- now more than ever-- to take action on your dreams. Pick one, find one, develop one, or just keep one. A dream leads to a prayer, which leads to an answer, which leads to an action, which leads to a lesson, which leads to success, which leads to ABUNDANT LIFE, which leads to FREEDOM! To those of us who are willing to take that path....

Here's to the JOURNEY, Victoria

Mexican Breakfast of champions!

When we run businesses, raise families, target deadlines and aspire to achieve big goals, our bodies often become unwilling victims of our minds' pursuits.  Let's face it, so many of us as women entrepreneurs are blazing trails in our professional lives, but overweight and undernourished in our bodies. It can be difficult to find time to cook food instead of grabbing fast food; to research nutrient-dense ingredients instead of going with what we know; to turn our commitments for more exercise into our daily reality. It is tough, but we are compromising quality of life for quick-fixes, and that is neither physically nor emotionally sustainable.

So, what's a busy woman entrepreneur on the rise to do?

For starters, she can quell her sweet tooth with healthier options, and use that as a segue into healthier habits. Satisfying your sweet tooth without eating unhealthy food is absolutely possible with a bit of creativity when it comes to spending time in the kitchen. If you are an avid cinnamon lover and you want to create a delicious, healthy dessert, there are plenty of options available that are simple and scrumptious. Use the following recipe to capitalize on one particular benefit of Cinnamon--the taste!

Apple Oatmeal

Enjoy cinnamon and apples? Creating your own apple oatmeal can be done for a healthy and satisfying meal. Cut and shred 2 apples, ridding the core. Heat a saucepan and add 1 cup of steel-cut oats, stirring until toasted, which will be approximately 2 minutes. Add water and the apples you have shredded, allowing the mixture to come to a boil. Once the oatmeal has boiled, allow it to simmer for about 10 minutes. Stir the mixture frequently as it simmers.

Cut two additional apples and stir them into the oat mixture after it has simmered for about 10 minutes. Add 2 tablespoons of brown sugar, 1/2 teaspoon of ground cinnamon and 1/4 teaspoon of salt for added flavor. Stir the mixture together and allow it to simmer for another 15 to 20 minutes. Once the oatmeal is thick, hot and mixed together after 15 to 20 minutes you can then serve the result in 4 separate servings. For added flavor, top the oatmeal with 3/4 teaspoon of brown sugar and a couple of tablespoons of flavored yogurt of your choice.

Granola With Cinnamon

When you are craving a delicious granola that includes a spicy cinnamon taste, try make your own from scratch. For this granola recipe you will need:

6 cups rolled oats
1 cup chopped walnuts
1 cup chopped almonds
1 cup raw, unsalted pepitas
6 tablespoons of canola oil
1/2 cup maple syrup
1/4 cup honey
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
1 teaspoon ground cinnamon (to taste)
1/2 teaspoon salt

Preheat your oven to 325 degrees Fahrenheit and line a roasting pan with parchment paper. Mix walnuts, almonds, pepitas and oats in a large mixing bowl. Add vanilla, salt, honey, cinnamon, oil and maple syrup in a separate bowl and mix thoroughly. Pour the liquid mixture over the oats and nuts you have prepared and toss. Spread the mixture over the lined pan.

Bake the mixture for approximately 50 minutes to 1 hour, or until browned and lightly golden on top. Stir the mixture each 15 minutes to evenly cook the granola throughout while giving each part of the granola a brown and golden appearance. Allow the mixture to cool completely before serving.

You can serve your freshly-prepared homemade granola in a bowl along with cold milk, topped with your favorite fruit or even in a custom yogurt parfait.

Getting creative in the kitchen doesn't have to take away from the time you spend nurturing your business. Plus, it's a great way to embrace work-life harmony by testing your creative (culinary) boundaries and ramping up on your health! Introduce delicious foods with cinnamon without worrying about processed foods and excessive sugar that can cause health problems. Being smart and making the most out of your dessert recipes will allow you to enjoy delicious foods without sacrificing your health.

What Type of Man Best "Fits" You? - Part 2

A man wants a partner not a competitor. You should too.

In part one, I asked you to evaluate or revaluate, what you are searching for in a man and your romantic relationship. I mentioned how men really are looking for the opportunity to love a woman who really appreciates him and what he does for her to make her life easier.

I asked you to take a look at shared values and to check your money mindset to see if it matches your mate or potential mate and to search for ways you may be able to resolve conflict by becoming more aware of your relationship patterns.

Now, in this article. I want to talk about creating a quality relationship with a man. Read the top line again... A man wants a partner not a competitor. You should too.

What do I mean? In the pursuit of better education, jobs, and recognition; ladies we have taken on a pseudo masculine approach to life and unfortunately our romantic relationships as well. While learning how to increase our level of desire and life ambitions; we adopted a man’s view on business, competition, success, and as role models. Since, men have been the dominant faces and gender in the workplace for decades, when we started to emerge into the work place with our intellect and skills. We looked to men and their behaviors to get ahead. This can be a good thing if you understand how to disconnect the masculine aggression once you leave the office.

Men are wonderful sources of information about business and business processes since they have been the dominant trendsetters in the business world. Only recently has it begun to shift (Thank goodness). And yes, we do have some wonderful examples of business success who are women, but if you read their autobiographies and biographies you will notice most of their early years were spent learning how to compete and at times survive in a “Man’s” world.

Unfortunately, this aggressive style spilled into their personal lives leaving a trail of emotional heartache, broken relationships, and marriages. (Not all, some of these women have found a happy balance between work and their home lives.) It is important to rejoice regarding our success and career milestones, but what about the carnage that has become our romantic lives. It is time to put an end to this unproductive cycle and reclaim the romance in our lives.

Tell me, when you come home from work do you want to relax and enjoy the peace and joy that is home or do you want to gear up for the next battle between you and your man?

You want to relax, right? Guess what, so does he. Creating a loving and peaceful home requires continuous work on both sides. I know it sounds like common sense, but we know from personal experience that what sounds good in theory does not always transfer into the real world.

Well, allow me to suggest a useful tip. Make a list of the things you and your man argue about. (If you are single, list the things that broke up your last relationship). Now, look over the list and tell me how many of those things could have been avoided or resolved with periodic discussions about the current state of your relationship:

• Any changes/shifts in mutual goals or values (We all change, grow, and develop at different rates; that means our partnerships will too.)

• Any changes in personal goals (Education, children, personal growth, etc)

• Learning how to listen more effectively to what your man is/was saying and not trying to “think” for him.

• Judgmental opinions that are/were fear-based and prevented you from really listening to what your partner was saying or trying to do that would benefit you and your family.

I could go on and on with this list. Ladies, when we are wired into our right-brain masculine mode of thinking and problem-solving. We can become very rigid in our response to our relationship challenges or as I prefer to call them… “Windows of opportunity for personal growth”; when this happens mutually satisfying resolution is nearly impossible. You now have 2 competitors trying to basically “beat” the other one into submission. It is a disaster which unfortunately if not corrected; leads to broken relationships and unhappy men and women returning to the world of dating. You simply cannot have a real man and a pseudo man existing inside a relationship. The feminine must be properly represented to create or restore peace.

So, I am sure you are wondering how to resolve this issue that affects so many potentially great relationships.

1. My first recommendation is to understand who you are as a person and a Woman. What do you need to be happy? In general and your romantic relationships; too often we get caught up in some other person’s dream and discover later on it was a huge mistake. So, be authentic.

2. Next be honest about the type of man you would enjoy creating a long-lasting relationship. Your dream guy may not be the person you have been fantasizing about. He may be someone totally different from the ones you keep pursuing.

  • How will you know?
  • Well, if you keep dating the same type of men and the relationship keep repeating the same unsuccessful relationship patterns. He mostly likely is not the right type of man for you. You are trying to “fit’ into someone else’s dream. Be bold and daring; take the time to write out who you really desire then, learn what you need to know to invite this man into your life.

3. Stop trying to be so “tough”. The “I don’t need a man” attitude will keep you single and in fault-finding state of mind when it comes to men. This holds true even if you are currently in a relationship; you will find ways to undermine your man and his efforts to be of assistance to you. Learn how to enjoy the softer side of your personality and allow men to step up, help you, and appreciate your feminine nature.

4. Stop trying to do this alone. Hire the services of someone who can help you unlock your hidden desires and dreams for a wonderful and satisfying relationship. We all at one time or another need the help of someone who holds us accountable to our dreams. Our love life is no different.

Remember the definition of insanity is:

“Doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results.”Albert Einstein

Does this sound like your life and romantic relationships? If so, here’s your chance to stop repeating dead-end habits and learn the skills to finally be happy. The steps outlined in this article can be the starting point for true romantic success, but they will only work if you are willing to step out of your comfort zone and be accountable for your love life and there is no reason to go it alone.

on the line

Being a woman in business is about more than reconciling your accounts and growing your business. Oftentimes, one of the primary motivators of a woman in business is her desire to spend quality time with her family. Does that desire resonate with you? If you are a parent in the busy California world, and particularly if you are the parent of a child with special needs, then you're quite familiar with what it takes to manage your schedule along with your child's particular needs.

Generally speaking, children can experience stress through a variety of situations such as school, homework, over-stimulation, bullying or tension at home. Finding ways for your child to deal with the anxiety is important and can make them more resistant to stress throughout the years. Whether your child has been formally diagnosed, or you have seen signs that your child might be experiencing over-stimulation and sensory challenges, what follows are some options to consider.

Interactive Visualizations

Serene and peaceful settings can instill calm during a panic attack. Busy parents who are in the Los Angeles area, for example, can take their child on an interactive tour through the less hectic nearby city of Santa Clarita. Here they’ll find breathtaking views, tranquil waters, sun and sand. In addition to the amusement park attractions, water parks, shops and restaurants, Santa Clarita is a charming community that is ideal for those who want their child to escape the stress and anxiety of big city living. Visit the Santa Clarita classifieds website for details, and plan something special for your child.

Blow Bubbles

Have a child under the age of 10? Outdoor bubble blowing uses the diaphragm to take deep breaths, so they can easily form these unique soap-like shapes. The art of bubble blowing takes your child’s mind off the panic by allowing them to concentrate on what they are doing. Deep breathing expands the body’s lungs, lowers the heart rate and calms the mind. Various tools such as straws, bubble pipes and giant wands can all add to the experience.

Play Dough

Therapists advise children with stress and anxiety disorders to break out the play dough. By forming the clay into various shapes and working with the dough, they can center their minds with more positive thoughts, while relieving tension. Pediatric therapists find that children who experience overwhelming thoughts and over-stimulation find that playing with play dough to be engrossing and can encourage the use of their other senses.

Exercise

Young individuals who experience stress and anxiety disorders need endorphins to stave off these nervous feelings. The body releases cortisol when it begins to feel stressed and overwhelmed, and exercises to release the feel good endorphins can aid those who have nervous tendencies. A number of activities can aid in this process and may include swimming, jumping rope, walking, biking and running. Hiking along a peaceful nature trail, camping along a quiet stream and making a campfire underneath the stars can also shift your mind away from these negative feelings and replace them with happy and serene thoughts.

Dolls and Action Figures

Working through anxieties can be difficult for small children. However, dolls and action figures have been proven to be helpful because the symbolic playfulness can alleviate their fear in an environment that is non-threatening. Powerful action figures such as Spiderman or Batman can help them overcome anxiety, as they’re able to stand up to villains by way of action figures. Through this interactive play, your child will learn self-confidence and to incorporate these situations into their everyday lives.

If you are seeing signs that your California child may be over-stimulated, nature-based settings, peaceful activities and interactive play can all nurture the situation and relieve their stress for both the child and his/her parent(s). Helping your child develop simple solutions to manage their own problems is a life skill they can use through childhood and well into their adult years.

Akilah Richards is a Certified Family Life Educator who shares information about ways to achieve and maintain work-life harmony. As a busy parent and entrepreneur, she finds that preparation is a vital part of her daily structure. Informative websites such as Santa Clarita classifieds offers a great way for California parents to pre-plan their activities and lessen the stress of managing family and business.

Budgeting and Why People Hate It

I recently did some random surveys, where I ask people questions about budgeting.  Budgeting is a necessary evil but no one wants to do it and I couldn’t figure out why?  Because it’s a very simple process.  I even share some simple steps in my post titled How To Create a Budget in 3 Easy Steps.  So I said to myself, “when in doubt – ask.”  So I asked people everywhere I come in contact with, friends and family, clients and social media connections, these three questions:

  • What frustrates you about budgeting?
  • What challenges do you face with budgeting?
  • What would make budgeting easier?

I received a lot of different responses.  One response was even “trying to get my husband on board.”  I had to laughed at that one.  Wouldn’t you know sometimes I have that same problem.  So I asked around and the most common responses I got were: Not having enough money; Having to create the budget; and Sticking to the budget.

Well let me tell you that last one resonates with me in a big way.  When I graduated college and started getting a real paycheck I moved out of my parents house within six months.  And I haven’t been back yet! One of things I realized very quickly was I needed to make sure all my bills for paid before I could spend money on what I wanted to.  I already knew I had a shopping problem.  Big secret right? So I created a budget for each paycheck.  I would budget six to eight months at a time so I would know when I would have the money to go holiday shopping or shopping for myself, on trips and even which months I could make lump sum payments to get out of debt.  This little schedule was great .  In fact, I still use it to this day.

As time went on, I could never figure out why I didn’t have enough money.  Then I would get a new job with a higher salary but the same thing would happen.  It was years before I realized that I was good at creating a budget but I sucked at following the budget.

So to help you avoid or to stop having the same problems I had, here are solutions to the top three responses.

  1. Not having enough money. This is a terrible excuse.  You don’t have enough money because you don’t have a budget to begin with.  You need to create a budget so that you can know where you need to spend money, including saving or paying yourself first.  Whether you are getting paid $5,000 a week or $5,000 a month, you need to ensure that all your costs are covered.  And if all your costs are not covered, that’s when you will know it’s time to ask for that raise or move on to other things.  But my guess, you will be just fine when you see all of the unnecessary things you spend your hard earned dollars on.  It’s just going to take  a little self control.
  2. Having to create the budget.  Not sure why people have such a hard time with this one.  If you do, then you are definitely over thinking things.  Here is the link again for How To Create a Budget in 3 Easy Steps.  Doesn’t matter if you’re doing a budget for a business or for your household, the same rules apply.  The only difference is for a household, you may not need to budget a full year.  Six months will do just fine.
  3. Sticking to the budget.  Now this I get.  It’s the shiny toy syndrome.  Every time you see something shiny and new you just have to have it, right? WRONG? You don’t need to be a walking model with all the hottest clothing trends.  And you don’t need to buy a new cell phone every time they come out with a new version.  You need to develop a system for tracking your costs.  A system you can stick to.  And try and make it fun.  Enlist a friend, turn it into a game or reward yourself.  When you have a prize waiting for you, you are more inclined to follow through.

Now it’s your turn. What frustrates you about budgeting? What challenges do you face with budgeting? What would make budgeting easier?

Top 10 Tips Every Busy Entretpreneur Needs to Know About Creating an Editorial Calendar

Is Creating an Editorial Calendar the Secret to Marketing Success?

If magazine editors waited for inspiration or for free time, no magazine would ever get published. So how do they churn out high quality content, month after month?

By creating and using an editorial calendar. And top bloggers and savvy entrepreneurs have learned this secret too.

An editorial calendar is a plan for producing regular written or media content, at regular intervals (e.g. monthly) at a perfect pace. It leaves you with deadlines you can use as a roadmap. You won’t have gaps in your postings and there’s no chance for people to forget who you are or give up on your blog.

And it can help eliminate writer’s block and last minute marketing sabotage. – the sort that leaves you realizing you forgot that your readers and subscribers were expecting Part Three of your series… yesterday!

1. Use the Method that Works Best With Your Learning Style

An editorial calendar is only useful if you use it. And if you set up a physical calendar that doesn’t work with your natural learning style, you’re more likely to forget to use it… or even, ultimately, abandon it.

a) If you are a kinesthetic learner who likes the hands-on approach, a paper calendar may be your best option. (Tip: You will most likely to be able to find plain desktop calendars with large enough slots to be useful in your local Dollar Store.)

Just be sure to put it in a place where you are likely to see it, rather than hiding it away in a desk.

b) If you are an aural learner, make an audio recording of your upcoming schedule.

c) If you are a visual learner, paper or digital will work – it’s just a matter of preference

d) If you are a read/write learner, a dated, chronological list format will probably work better for you than a graphic calendar format.

If you want to find out or confirm your ideal learning style, try one of the free online questionnaires or quizzes, such as the VARK model.

vark questionnaire

(No sign-up required for the basic assessment.)

2. Create and Coordinate Monthly and Annual Calendars

Many people find that two versions of their editorial schedule work best:

  • A monthly calendar (e.g. WordPress Editorial Plugin)
  • An annual calendar (manual or digital)

The reason for this? On your Annual Editorial Calendar, you can enter important posts to tie in with events scheduled far down the road; or with seasonal events.

Then, every month when you sit down to fill out your monthly Calendar, a quick visual check with the Annual Calendar will allow you to transpose these events onto your monthly Calendar before you input new posts for the current month, making sure nothing gets double-booked – or missed.

3. Use the WordPress Editorial Calendar Plugin

If you use WordPress, then the free WordPress Editorial Calendar plugin can be your best post-scheduling friend. So do install it.

While you’re writing your posts or maintaining your blog, you have access to the Editorial Calendar at a click of the button. And you can log in and glance at your Calendar to see what you have to do today before writing a word.

4. Use the New CoSchedule Plugin for Wordpress to Create Your Editorial Calendar

They call it “The Better Editorial Calendar for Wordpress”. And it totally is!

CoSchedule is a new plug-in (currently free and in beta) for wordpress that allow you to create and manage blog and social media content all in one place.

This plug-in eliminates the need for having a separate social media editorial calendar, which can add extra work and be completely overwhelming, especially for a busy entrepreneur.

If you don’t coordinate your social media campaigns with your posts, you could be missing opportunities to allow each platform – blog and social media – to enhance the other. This is what makes this plug-in so powerful.

5. Use MS Excel to Create Your Editorial Calendar

If you are more comfortable using Microsoft Excel or you are a text-based learner, you may find Excel the best tool for creating your Editorial Calendar.

Another reason for using MS Excel: If your business is highly fluid, and you know you are going to be tweaking and adjusting your Editorial Calendar perhaps more than the average blogger.

In fact, there are many MS Excel templates for doing precisely that. (You can download – without signing up; just right-click and save – a very nice template courtesy of Vertical Measures.

6. Use Color Coding

If you are a visual or kinesthetic learner, try color coding the different cycles – then highlighting scheduled posts according to each cycle color.

This is also a fabulous trick if you have learning disabilities or any other form of cognitive impairment, as the visual stimulus and cueing helps you mentally “sort” and remember better.

You could also designate cycles by creating a Category field in your Calendar, along with corresponding two- or three-letter Category codes… or combine both categories and color coding. (Tip: Include a Legend at the top of your chart-style annual Calendar or beginning of your multi-page or monthly Calendar.)

7. Include Your Calls to Action in Your Editorial Calendar

Write down the call to action (CTA) for each item on your editorial calendar. Not only will this ensure you remember to include it in your blog post, but you will be able to more objectively judge the level of engagement your post is likely to create.

And yes: You could designate a color and highlight your CTAs too, if you wish.

8. Learn to Think in Cycles

No matter what your learning style, one of the biggest mistakes you can make is to think in a linear fashion – I. E. A B C D E F G.

Your blog will feel fuller, richer, more organized and more enjoyable to your readers if you learn to schedule your blog in multiple cycles.

7-cycles

Take your Annual Editorial Calendar and go through using the following “cycles” (and any others unique to your business), one after the other:

  • Seasonal cycle (Spring, Summer, Autumn, Winter)
  • Holiday cycle (Christmas, St. Valentine’s Day, St. Patrick’s Day, etc.)
  • Events cycle (e.g. Annual Cycling Workshop, Victoria Day Race, etc.)
  • Contest cycle (e.g. Summer Photo Challenge, Christmas Giveaway, etc.)
  • iscal Cycle (e.g. . Your annual business quarter-years, from beginning to end)
  • Product Cycle (All your scheduled, upcoming product launches)
  • Sales Cycles (High and low buying trends – base these on previous sales metrics)

Learning to plan your editorial calendar in this fashion will really help ingrain your business’ “big picture” in mind – and make much better business (and editorial) decisions.

9. Systematize Your Editorial Calendar Management Process

It really doesn’t matter whether you alone update the calendar and distribute information, or your authors or staff are allowed to cross things off and add them – the important thing is a clear understanding of the ground rules – and a clear chain of communication.

So decide on…

a) Who will update the Editorial Calendar(s)

b) How the Editorial Calendar(s) will be updated

c) Who will notify the rest of the team of necessary changes or completions

d) How they will do this

Making sure everyone understands the system is the best way to avoid scheduling conflicts or omissions.

10. Consider Publishing Your Upcoming Editorial Calendar

Not only will it inspire you to meet your own deadline (since there is nothing more lame than not following through to your readers) but you may attract quality submissions – leaving you with great content to use for your blog and the time to plan next month’s editorial calendar in comfort.

You don’t have to publish it in full Editorial Calendar format: You can simply make sure you create a section of upcoming stories (with Submission Guidelines) on your website or blog, just as many online magazines and publishing companies such as Chicken Soup for the Soul does.

But when all is said and done, remember that Editorial Calendars are simply tools: Only you can decide what type works best for you.

And, of course, they’ll be no use unless you use them!

Growing Up #1

Do

Things we are told

and

Experiences we have had

Growing up

Make us who we are?

Every person on earth is a unique person.  No two people are the same.  We all look different, we all think different and we all process the things that happen in our life different.  I believe everyone has some sort of concept that your past helps contribute to the person you become, however I am not sure everyone realizes to what degree that statement is true.  I believe the things we are told and the experiences we have, growing up can make us or break us.  We are all unique creations of God and therefore, it is unfair to judge anyone for who they are.

Have you ever thought how two people can grow up in a certain situation and yet grow up to be totally different?  Have you ever noticed that even identical twins are different in many ways?  Two children who grew up in the same home with the same type of love and experiences will grow up and have totally different memories of their childhood.

To think of this is a miracle, however it is also very sad.  I say it is sad because although, we all want to be recognized for the person we are, we tend to judge others for who they are or are not.  We judge without knowing the things there were told or the experiences they had growing up.  Maybe if we took time to realize this, we could be more understanding of other’s situations.  Think about your own life and the things that have affected you.  Some of the words spoken or actions taken you may not even realize had such an impact on the way you think or react to certain situations today.  It may have been a negative word spoken to you as a young child that was reinforced as the years went by.  It may have been a certain action that happened, maybe you didn’t know all the circumstances and therefore saw that action as something other than what it was.  Your mind has processed these words and/or actions and has been reinforced by similar words or actions throughout the years…Now your heart feels the pain when the something triggers that deep rooted emotion that has grown with you as you have grown.  If those emotions were built over time due to something that someone else was responsible for, you may be trying to resolve the emotions you carry without even realizing it.  You may be looking for someone else to help you heal from the hurt you have carried for so long.  Until you can look into yourself to see where the hurt began, you may not ever  be able to resolve it.  Just as it is unfair for others to judge you for the person you have become, it is unfair for us to judge others due to the pain we keep within ourselves.   In most cases it is our pain and we try to make it theirs by holding them accountable for the actions or words that they say that in turn cause us pain.  In reality it is our pain and our decision to hold onto that pain.

Do

We hold onto pain and hurt

In our minds and heart

To make us the people we are now?
