When trying to decide whether to use a credit union or a bank when applying for a credit card. There are a few factors to consider.

1.) With a credit union you are a member, or a stakeholder. With a bank you are simply a customer. Banks are for-profit institutions and their goal is to make money for the stockholders of the company. A credit union is not-for-profit entity and their goal is pass through the profits to the members. This comes in the form of added member benefits such as low fees and low rates.

2.) Its a misconstrued opinion that credit unions have limited branch and ATM locations. However, many credit unions belong to larger networks, such as the Credit Union Service Centers.

3.) Most credit unions offer credit cards just like a typical bank. What isn’t so typical are the exceptionally low APR rates they offer.

4.) Credit unions have many available ATMs, but they are also fee free! The average fee for an ATM is $2.33 and is on the rise. Now if you use your bank issued ATM card at a third party ATM, then you just doubled your fees. With a credit union ATM card, you can withdraw your own money fee free as long as it’s at a participating ATM. Even if you withdraw money from a third party, you may have to pay their fee, but most credit unions don’t charge for the transactions themselves. I’m too busy to walk into a branch office every time I want to withdraw some money, and I feel that I shouldn’t have to pay hefty fees when I do.

5.) At a credit union, credit cards, home equity loans, mortgages, auto loans, and personal loans all enjoy lower rates than you will find at a bank. At the same time, savings, checking, money market, and CD’s have higher rates. I don’t typically endorse putting any significant amount of your money into savings and CD’s as inflation tends to outpace them, however, most people feel more comfortable doing so and they might as well earn a higher rate!

Resolution or Revolution?

As is custom at the beginning of a New Year the mind turns fondly to self-improvement endeavors and dreams as yet unmet. What might be different is the approach one takes in order to make those changes. Do you solemnly swear that THIS year, things are going to be really different? Or have you come to the conclusion that it is time for more, much more than a traditional exercise that is frequently abandoned by the wayside a mere few days or weeks later?

Then let us hereby start a revolution, and boldly state that My BAG, my Big Audacious Goals are… what? Fill in the blank. For me, and by that I mean Pink Passport Society of course, my BAG includes doubling our membership, bringing you weekly videos (I just did the trial run today and it was pretty darned fun). Of course what I decided was instead of the waist up – oh no, full length was never under consideration – I will shoot the videos from the chest or neck up. Yeah, much better angle.

Let me tell you of a few more wonders in the New Year:

    The aforementioned weekly Passport Living Video Blog, that includes questions from you, the members;

    Our newest partnership brings you an Annual Weeklong Retreat in Maui (sorry, for members only so join today!)

    Passport Inn (our first community program – transitional housing for homeless women vets) is going LIVE this year;

    National Alliance of Philanthropists for Women membership site will be up and running by the 2nd quarter (we want to make sure it is just plump and bursting at the seams with information and resources for the members);

    We are planning to take An Evening Prelude to Your Future on the road, with 4 stops this year, one each quarter. First we’re going to take over California and then head east, starting with Las Vegas. I mean, who doesn’t love a good party. Maybe we’ll be the ones to give a real boost to the Vegas economy if our numbers are large enough by then, eh?

Okay, that’s too much good stuff. Let’s talk about you now. If you’ll tune in to the weekly blog, you’ll be getting some real information about boosting your net worth. We’ll help you create your own Prosperity Plan, get you started in investing and otherwise diversifying your income, as well as give you real life accounts of (my) Passport Living so you can learn from my own (mis)adventures!

If you’re reading the blog, visit the website and sign-up: http://PinkPassport.org If you started the excerpt on the website, check out the blog and read the archives http://PinkPassportBlog.com . There’s great info in those golden pages. Shoot me an email @ GuidedJourney@PinkPassport.org and ask me a question I can answer on the video or tell me, what’s your BAG?

We live in a world of convenience. It is really easy to buy from Black people, but it is easier for most of us NOT to buy from Black people. It is easier to say I got bad customer service at the Black owned store and never return. But when we get bad customer service from a store owned by someone of another race, why do we keep going back and spending our money with them? That is a HUGE problem. It has been so convenient to drive to the mall or the super center where you have thousands of products to make a selection. Even when some of these products have proven to be a health risk to people of color!

Just think of it this way, itis easier or more convenient to drive one mile to go buy junk food. But it is better for you to drive 15 miles to the Black all natural health food store for your cereal, rice, fruits and vegetables. So just because it is easier to go down the street to buy from the Asian hair care store than to drive 20 minutes to buy from the little Black hair care store... which one is the right thing to do for OUR community, even if it costs a few dollars more on gas and product? There are over one million Black owned businesses in this country, but unfortunately we spend 95% of our income outside of our community.

Have youever asked yourself why there are so many commercials with Black actors that are targeted to the Black consumer. You might have thought, Wow! This company must really care about Black people to
have this type of commercial. Or you see major bank like Wells Fargo sponsoring a huge music event with top Black entertainers. Or a panel like Tavis Smiley's State of the Black Union. Well think again. McDonald's became so convenient for us, we started eating breakfast, lunch and dinner and now have the highest obesity rates ever! Wells Fargo was one of the worse companies in this country who put Black people into horrible loans. It was if they designed these loans for the Black home owner to fail after 3-5 yrs. Some were put into
interest only loans, some were put into adjustable rate loans that after the “teaser” period was over, the interest rate could adjust up every six months until it reached 15%! So I believe one of the purposes of sponsoring the events is to get more Black consumers to patronize their products/services, and for no other reason. So why
do we put so much faith into companies like these that continue to rip us off, than in our own Black owned businesses?

I worked over 20 years in broadcasttelevision working with consumer market research. Main stream advertisers continue to spend millions of dollars to find out where Black people spend and how often they spend. There are thousands of data bases with information on what TV shows we watch, what radio shows we listen to and what newspapers and magazines we read. So that these corporations can customize their advertisements to entice us to buy their products. Knowing that as a race we currently spend about $900 billion dollars as consumers... who wouldn't want a piece of that kind of money. Isn't it sad that our highly spiritual people would rather go for convenience rather than the principle of doing the right thing. This is THE same thing that Marcus Garvey, Dr. King and Malcolm X spoke about. We MUST buy from our own people because it not only is the right thing to do, it is the only way for us to rebuild our communities, with thriving Black businesses and give our children more role models that are business minded in nature.

Lookat how many businesses Marcus Garvey built between 1916-1920. Do you realize what he really created? He created communities with Black people organized with their own self-sufficient economic resources. Grocery stores, laundries, hotels, clothing shops, every kind of biz for Black people. I believe desegregation lead to the downfall of Black businesses for decades!

Fast forward from 1920 to theyear 2008, millions of us pulled together as a people and registered to vote in numbers that were staggered the imagination, so that we could vote for a Black as President. So why can't we come together on creating our own economy by recycling our dollars back into our own communities by buying from more Black owned businesses just like the Jewish and Asian communities do? How long are we going to let other ethnic groups set up shop in our communities and take that money back to their neighborhoods to spend with their own people? We are probably the only ethnic group in this country that DOES NOT support
each other on a wide scale economic basis. (Excluding the brothers and sisters in the Nation of Islam.)

So how long are YOUgoing to keep doing what is convenient... instead of doing the right thing for you and your community? Especially when we have brothers and sisters who make high-quality products that are made specifically for OUR skin, OUR hair, OUR body types, etc. I really want to know what you think.

We have a Black man in the White House; we have millions of Black businesses and entrepreneurs in this country. So why do we continue to spend our money with other businesses? 95% of the $900+ Billion that Black people earn each year goes right out of our communities and making other people rich. We as a people are richer than the combination of numerous countries, but yet as a people we do not exert the economic power that we possess.I am asking every Black person to reevaluate how they spend their money. Have we been so brain washed by the mass media advertising that we have to buy those rims, designer jewelry, purses and shoes? Ever wonder why McDonald's and BK just to name a few, have commercials geared specifically towards our youth? Personally I am offended by most of them. Did you know that major corporations spend millions on researching how Blacks spend their money so they can produce even more advertising targeted towards us? If everyone else thinks our money is so important, then maybe how we spend our money could really make a difference.Marcus Garvey, Malcolm X and even Dr. Martin Luther King., Jr. all spoke on these same issues of our people manufacturing and distributing our own products. What if spending an extra dollar or two to support a Black business meant more jobs in your community, or more taxes being paid that would help build better schools and other improvements? Wouldn't it be nice if our youth saw thriving Black businesses all around them and they would want to become a successful entrepreneur instead of a gang banger, thief, drug dealer, etc.?We’ve been hoodwinked, bamboozled, lead astray as Brother Malcolm said many years ago. We have to get out of the notion that to be accepted we have to buy from everybody else. Our community doesn’t own Wal-Mart, Macy’s or JC Penney’s, but our money is going to them and thousands of other stores every single day.Here’s an example I heard used a few weeks ago. Japan was defeated, military destroyed, and surrendered after WWII. Afterwards they focused on their home front. Re-building their communities, producing products and services and buying from each other. Similar story around the same time for the Jewish population who came to the U.S. No one would give them a job, so they produced their own products and services and bought exclusively from each other. They only employed other Jewish people. Look how much they accomplished in just a few generations. Is this racist? No, the only way to get their communities thriving was producing items and selling within their own community. Look at all of the other cultures that do the same and prospered.So my mission that I started on about a year ago was to find Black Businesses and Entrepreneurs and find Black Consumers to buy from them (or at least see if what they are looking to buy is available at these businesses before they make their purchases elsewhere.) I drive right by Wal-Mart or Walgreens to get aspirin from a Black owned pharmacy. We use a Black computer analyst for our business IT needs. I just had a Black, independent mechanic change the brakes on my car. My dentist is Black. I buy my hair care and body/bath products directly from the Black manufacturers at www.buyblacktoday.com/TeamDollar. Am I racist? No, I know my Black dollars are benefiting Black businesses inside and outside of my community. And you know what? It makes me feel absolutely wonderful to support them. If you are looking for a Black Business Network with members from all over the country, who support each other by also finding customers for the other members, visit www.BlackBusinessNetwork.com/TeamDollar.

Emancipation from public education

As parents we must make tough decisions in regards to our kids. The decisions we make will impact their lives even after they are all grown up. Just imagine for one moment that a decision that you made ruined or deeply impacted your child’s life in a negative way. How will you deal with knowing that your decisions may have harmed your child.Well, believe it or not the decision to send children to public school has proven to have some major negative ramifications. Many children pick up some very bad habits and ways from being in public school. Many of our young people are exposed to drugs, alcohol, sex, homosexuality, violence and more just from going to public school. Some children face the pressures of bullying and not being able to keep up among other things. All of this is the result of being in an unstable and hostile environment.When a child is in a hostile environment they are unable to function properly. There is no such thing as telling your child to merely concentrate and ignore what‘s happening around them. A statement such as that , suggest that you don’t have an answer for your child and therefore can only put the situation on the back burner. Many parents find out the hard way that this decision may ultimately harm their child’s future. The instability in the public school environment has helped lead to the rapid decline in academic achievement in our schools. This is why there is such a huge increase in home education. The public school system has failed our children.Home education has such a rapid increase, especially amongst African Americans, which is primarily due to the insufficient educational process of the public school. It is estimated that more than 2,000,000 American children are home schooled. This number will continue to increase as parents awareness is sparked. More and more parents are taking the plunge into home schooling as they realize that they can better educate their children.Black home schoolers are especially motivated to take on the role as parent-teacher seeing that African American children have a higher dropout rate than any other race. The only way to protect your child from becoming a part of this dropout statistic is to become and early dropout through emancipating yourselves from the state institutional education. Please understand that I’m referring to having your child drop out of a failed institution and reviving their learning through home education. We here at The Black Home Schoolers Association would like to help in every way we can. Please feel free to contact us or visit our website at: www.BlackHomeschoolers.com
