Mexican Breakfast of champions!

When we run businesses, raise families, target deadlines and aspire to achieve big goals, our bodies often become unwilling victims of our minds' pursuits.  Let's face it, so many of us as women entrepreneurs are blazing trails in our professional lives, but overweight and undernourished in our bodies. It can be difficult to find time to cook food instead of grabbing fast food; to research nutrient-dense ingredients instead of going with what we know; to turn our commitments for more exercise into our daily reality. It is tough, but we are compromising quality of life for quick-fixes, and that is neither physically nor emotionally sustainable.

So, what's a busy woman entrepreneur on the rise to do?

For starters, she can quell her sweet tooth with healthier options, and use that as a segue into healthier habits. Satisfying your sweet tooth without eating unhealthy food is absolutely possible with a bit of creativity when it comes to spending time in the kitchen. If you are an avid cinnamon lover and you want to create a delicious, healthy dessert, there are plenty of options available that are simple and scrumptious. Use the following recipe to capitalize on one particular benefit of Cinnamon--the taste!

Apple Oatmeal

Enjoy cinnamon and apples? Creating your own apple oatmeal can be done for a healthy and satisfying meal. Cut and shred 2 apples, ridding the core. Heat a saucepan and add 1 cup of steel-cut oats, stirring until toasted, which will be approximately 2 minutes. Add water and the apples you have shredded, allowing the mixture to come to a boil. Once the oatmeal has boiled, allow it to simmer for about 10 minutes. Stir the mixture frequently as it simmers.

Cut two additional apples and stir them into the oat mixture after it has simmered for about 10 minutes. Add 2 tablespoons of brown sugar, 1/2 teaspoon of ground cinnamon and 1/4 teaspoon of salt for added flavor. Stir the mixture together and allow it to simmer for another 15 to 20 minutes. Once the oatmeal is thick, hot and mixed together after 15 to 20 minutes you can then serve the result in 4 separate servings. For added flavor, top the oatmeal with 3/4 teaspoon of brown sugar and a couple of tablespoons of flavored yogurt of your choice.

Granola With Cinnamon

When you are craving a delicious granola that includes a spicy cinnamon taste, try make your own from scratch. For this granola recipe you will need:

6 cups rolled oats
1 cup chopped walnuts
1 cup chopped almonds
1 cup raw, unsalted pepitas
6 tablespoons of canola oil
1/2 cup maple syrup
1/4 cup honey
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
1 teaspoon ground cinnamon (to taste)
1/2 teaspoon salt

Preheat your oven to 325 degrees Fahrenheit and line a roasting pan with parchment paper. Mix walnuts, almonds, pepitas and oats in a large mixing bowl. Add vanilla, salt, honey, cinnamon, oil and maple syrup in a separate bowl and mix thoroughly. Pour the liquid mixture over the oats and nuts you have prepared and toss. Spread the mixture over the lined pan.

Bake the mixture for approximately 50 minutes to 1 hour, or until browned and lightly golden on top. Stir the mixture each 15 minutes to evenly cook the granola throughout while giving each part of the granola a brown and golden appearance. Allow the mixture to cool completely before serving.

You can serve your freshly-prepared homemade granola in a bowl along with cold milk, topped with your favorite fruit or even in a custom yogurt parfait.

Getting creative in the kitchen doesn't have to take away from the time you spend nurturing your business. Plus, it's a great way to embrace work-life harmony by testing your creative (culinary) boundaries and ramping up on your health! Introduce delicious foods with cinnamon without worrying about processed foods and excessive sugar that can cause health problems. Being smart and making the most out of your dessert recipes will allow you to enjoy delicious foods without sacrificing your health.

If you are a single mom, it might be difficult to get away for an actual Mother's Day vacation. However, there's no reason you can't enjoy the weekend by planning a staycation in or near or your town. In fact, many single mothers prefer the staycation approach because it enables them to enjoy quality time alone and with their children without needing to pack their car full of toys and other necessary items. Are you a single mom wanting to enjoy yourself this Mother's Day weekend? Perfect! Read on to get a head start on planning the perfect staycation.

Ideas for Alone Time

Even though you will most likely want to spend the majority of the weekend with your children, it is definitely okay to take some time for yourself. Once your children have been safely delivered to one of your relatives or a babysitter, you can head to a local day spa to be pampered for a few hours. If you prefer to have some time to yourself without visiting a spa, consider taking yourself on a movie date. After all, it's typically very difficult for a single mom to enjoy a movie that is geared toward a mature audience, and you do need to allow yourself to be an adult and enjoy some "Me time." Finances too tight at the moment? No worries! Head to the library a few days before Mother's Day and rent a few good magazines.  Then, on Mother's Day, put on your favorite pair of sweats, order some home movies, and enjoy the solitude.

A Staycation with Children

After you've spent some time by yourself, it's a good idea to let your children enjoy Mother's Day with you. If the temperature is warm enough in your area, you could take your kids to the beach or the pool for an afternoon. Even if the beach is in your town, it will still provide you with some of the fun and relaxation that is typically associated with going on vacation. Another good way to celebrate the holiday with your children is to go to out to eat at a restaurant that is serving a special Mother's Day meal. Alternatively, you could go to your favorite park or nature reserve and have a picnic. If you have a young baby, bring their portable playards along for impromptu naps and feeding time.

Staying at Home for Fun

In some cases, it might be easier to plan an at-home staycation with your children. If so, be sure to do something different from your daily experiences. For example, if you have a young baby, they can join the fun if you make simple changes like transitioning baby from his or her regular crib into a fun-meets-function Bright Starts playard.  They offer comfort and engagement for baby, and convenience for mommy; a win/win! Or, get together and make Mother's Day crafts and hang them around your home. Another good idea is to build the environment of a movie theater at home by making popcorn, letting everyone have some candy, turning the lights off and pulling your living room furniture closer to the television than usual to make the screen look bigger.

Regardless of what you decide to do for Mother's Day weekend, make sure that you take some time to celebrate yourself. After all, being a single mom is one of the hardest jobs in the world, and you deserve to do something special in honor of the holiday.

There has been a incredible shift in the world around us.  From the Northeast hurricane, to many people stepping out on pure faith and starting new businesses, ending unhealthy relationships to even finally taking health seriously. We’re all being charged with “purging” something. In the midst of this though…doesn’t mean there are challenges or days when you simply want to “quit”.

YOU KNOW
::The client money isn’t coming in on time

::The husband just “ain’t acting right”

::The kids are a mess at school

::Your stress level is out of wack

::Your business is good…but it’s not “great”

::You seem to be working harder for the same result.

::You feel enslaved to your purpose.

As women we come as a package deal and with that means that often overwhelming feeling of wishing and wanting to just “quit” – to let it all go. To throw in the towel and just let the sh!% it the fan!

I know that feeling and I have to have a “come to Jesus”  meeting with myself. And get real.

It’s time someone offered you a dose of truth…and that is

ENOUGH IS ENOUGH.

Truth be told, women of color tiptoe around our issues in our lives and ultimately our businesses. We don’t invest in ourselves however we expect others to invest in us.

Do you? Do  you invest in yourself or do you quit at the thought of doing the work

QUIT at the thought of truly asking for assistance and support in growing your business or how women like Cameka Smith (founder of Forbes.com listed BOSS Network) has done by fostering a community of women entrepreneurs who network for good?

QUIT feeling like you can’t really work with other women because “they always want to take what’s mines”. And the hard work of learning to trust your own “GET IT GIRL!” so you can work with other women without the “crabs-in-the-barrel mentality” like LaShanda Henry (founder of Black Business Women Online) did with her girlfriends

QUIT at the thought of truly (and I mean truly) investing in quality mentorship and guidance and humbling yourself to end the thinking that you must do everything on your own or that perhaps Women of Color can’t produce high quality events and workshops that are impactful and profitable like thePOWER CIRCLE Conference & Expo happening Jan 2013.

What’s my point? I’ve been in a “Inner BITCH” release pilgrimage for some time involving releasing all the GUNK that was stuck in my belief system for too long.  My sister on this journey of complete liberation and I have been charged with not only calling ourselves out…but other women. Particularly women of color and Black women more specifically on how our emotional wellness is the TRUE source of abundance.

If you’re still reading I offer that I realize this post is making tons of assumptions about you – the reader – but perhaps it’s not. Perhaps somewhere inside of you, a-lot of this rings true. If not to this extreme, perhaps in your own self-sabotaging efforts to define “success” merely as the sum of your bank account or based on the number of episodes of  Donald Trump’s
The Apprentice” you’ve been able to copy-cat in your own business journey.

Whatever it is…there is a time to call it quits, but not on yourself…but on the nonsense that is causing many of us to live beneath the truth of our possibilities. The truth is that there is another more authentic way of living and creating and this video offers a bit of that truth.

ATLANTA, GA — Katrina M. Harrell and Akilah S. Richards have a collective abundance of life and business anecdotes from their personal and professional experiences.  One common thread among their stories is the lack of harmony between sound business strategies and real emotional wellness.

Frustrated with the trial-and-error approach to success among their own, Harrell and Richards now lead the movement that challenges black women business owners to face the harsh truths about promoting their brands versus building their businesses.  Their solution is 5-step “escape plan” from what they've dubbed "The inner B.I.T.C.H.".

On Thursday, November 9 at 9PM (EST) the two will host a free, live dialogue on Google+ Hangouts based around the focal points of their debut joint venture, How She Got Free: A Spiritual Business Manual for Women Who Lead Through Entrepreneurship.

The dialogue, which will also be live-streamed on YouTube, offers women a platform to discuss their biggest hurdles in business and life planning and income generating models.  Using the 5-Step Escape Plan, black women entrepreneurs can recognize their ineffective patterns, and align themselves with higher standards, sound structures, and effective systems in their professional and personal lives.

During the November 9th dialogue, the duo will tackle frequently dodged topics such as:

  • Offering “bargain bin” pricing instead of charging what we’re worth

  • How black women look to their white counterparts for marketing models that do not work with own potential markets

  • The lack of application of basic business principles and the consequences therein

Act Your Wage

Interesting title right? Well think about it. Do you act like what you are worth? When you step out of your house do you look like a potential billionaire :0? Do you look like a professional? Do you look like someone others would want to work with??? Ask yourself these questions and if you can answer "NO" to any of them, then "Houston, we have a problem!" Even if you just started yesterday, you need to realize you now have a responsibility to build your business (if you want to be successful). And the only way that happens is through YOU.You have to think about how you present yourself when talking about business or having people rely on you for business services. This is also important for those that have a 9 to 5. If you want a raise but wear jeans everyday...even if there is no dress code, they probably won't take you too seriously. If you want a promotion but you come late everyday, you probably haven't even been considered for a promotion. When you purchase a franchise, MLM or any type of business venture, you then have a responsibility to grow it and show people what you have to offer. If you have a cosmetics company but never wear any of your products, why would people want to buy anything from you? If you own a health and wellness business, but don't appear "healthy", why would people want to use your product? If you don't look like anyone that can be successful in business, then it might be hard to get your feet off the ground. So think about it....do you act your wage??

How many of you take time for YOURSELF? I have watched enough Oprah shows to know that if you don't take care of yourself no one else will. You will be unhappy, grumpy, and your friends will be begging you to see a shrink. If anyone knows it's me. A child with autism, and epilepsy; family dysfunction, unsuccesful relationships, death of close friends and family members, etc...I don't feel like a victim, so don't go poor Rierie, just sharing!!! I used to run on empty, out of gas; that was my normalcy so to speak, then one day I crashed. I wanted to crawl into a whole and never come out. God's grace saved me. There are a few things that I cannot live without nowadays. I try to feed my mind, my body, my spirit, as much as I can; it's all connected, so why not take care of the whole package!!!

The Mind
6a00cdf39c677acb8f00d4143c67bc3c7f-500pi.jpgWhewwww, "she" can chatter all day long; from what you need to do right now, what you didn't do yesterday, how many things you have to get done nowwww. "She" will keep you up at night, and before you know it, you are on Ambien. So I brain drain.
-Brain drain: write down a list of everything you need to do on a notepad, from grocery store to going to the bank to chaperoning your kids next field trip.
-Stop being negative; I am sure you already know this, whatever you focus on expands, if you focus on negativity, what's wrong in your life, you will get more of it.
-Let your mind float freely. Imagine that you have no limitations. Imagine that you have all the time, money, resources, intelligence, education, experience and all the contacts in the world. Imagine that you could do, be or have anything in your life. What if you had no fear of failure at all?
-Your most important goals/intentions must be YOURS. Not your spouse's, your child's, your employer's, your mother's, your sister's....
-Write your intentions in positive terms, avoid saying "I will not be. Your subconscious mind is very specific and it doesn't judge, it will attract like a magnet whatever you focus on.
If you've never read 'The Power Of Your Subconscious Mind", pick up a copy, a great book....I have 2 copies, dog-eared to the 10th power lol.

The Body
If you are not kind to it now, it will be hostile to you later.
HUK+Cover-1.png
-Don't diet, diets make you cranky, eat whole foods; diet=die, I want to live lol. I am sure you do too. God gave us whole foods for a reason, ditch those frozen meals, canned goods, fat free this and that. Eat grass fed beef, organic chicken, wild caught fishes; not farm-raised, organic fruits, and veggies. Use olive oil, and coconut oil. Do your research on canola oil, and soy (disturbing). Cut out sugar, drink more water. I can't get down with eggs beaters in a carton box, come on now.....you get the jist. Check out this book, "Healthy Urban Kitchen", the author, Antonio is on to something....
-Move it; you don't have to be a slave to the treadmill, hike, take a walk with your dog, take your kids or grandkids to the park and become one of them, salsa dance (my faaaavorite woo hoo).
Check out these two amazing salsa teachers; they offer classes that will have you sweating and cheering; Myriam Soavinzara and "Tony "El Pana". You will be sweating to a slimmer you while having fun...
-Treat yourself to a massage, mani-pedi, get a facial, plan a get away, put on lipgloss, reconnect with a long time friend over a great glass of wine, take on golf.... :-)

The Spirit
We are spiritual beings having a human experience, that's what I believe, we are more than this body. Believe in a Higher Power, whatever it may be for you, I am a God fanatic, and lover ♡
-Prayers work, enough said.
Getting in the Gap: Making Conscious Contact with God Through Meditation (Book with CD)-Meditate, "Be still, and know that I am God" (Psalm 46:10). Look up Japa meditation if you are having a hard time shutting down your mind. It's helped me a lot. You can check out Dr. Wayne Dyer's book "Getting in the gap".
-Surrender, this is now a daily practice of mine, it has truly become a habit. To surrender means to yield, to relinquish control over. When we surrender to God, we are simply acknowledging that what we "own" actually belongs to Him. He is the giver of all good things. By surrendering to God, we admit that He is ultimately in control of everything, including our present circumstances. Let Go, let God.
-Forgive someone; Love someone; Compliment someone and mean it, say Thank You.
-Be grateful; there are thousands of things to be grateful for on a regular basis, no matter how difficult things may seem. "When you change the way you look at things, the things you look at change". Dr. Wayne Dyer

LIFE IS A GAME....PLAY IT....LIVE YOUR PASSION, IT'S UP TO YOU!!!!!

Life is a blessing... enjoy each day!

I am sitting here enjoying a raining day in South FL. I am going over all the things I have to be grateful for. My beautiful sons and grandson... to me... they are living miracles. I think about my loving family and friends, who make me smile and remind me where I come from. The budding new love in my life. He is a complex and incredible man. Who touches my heart in a way I had nearly forgotten. I live in a lovely home that is a haven for anyone who comes to visit. I could go on and on.

This reflective mood comes as I am dancing around my home and noticing that my body barely hurts much any more throughout the day. You see, this time last year. I was in so much pain that I spent most of my days in tears. My central nervous system had gone haywire and nobody had an answer why I was in so much pain.

Nothing helped... not sitting down, standing, or lying in bed. I was dealing with symptoms that baffled my doctors. I saw a whole team of medical experts. General physicians, neurosurgeons, neurologists, and an orthopedic physician. They thought MS, Lupus, and a host of other things that nearly scared me half to death. And, I might add, they were very aggressive in their quest to label me with some thing and prescribe me some type of medication that may or may not help.

As, I went from one recommendation to another. I refused to take the medication, much to the annoyance of a couple of my doctors. I have nothing against prescription medication if the person taking the medication understands the side effects and the potential new health problems that the drug may create. My problem was how quick a doctor was to write a prescription with no real reason to give it to me.

So, praying daily for some answers, I did my research and looked into more holistic ways to help my beautiful body heal herself. I figure I am the best expert when it comes to me. I live inside my body 24/7 and I do know when something is not right. Even if I decide to ignore it. So, shame on me... I believe every thing happens for a reason. Obviously, I had spent too much time neglecting my inner voice that had been telling me to slow down. Please understand, when this happened to me I was taking care of myself physically... eating properly and exercising nearly 7 hours per week. I thought I was doing the right thing.

As, I did my online holistic research. I decided to visit a chiropractor and a friend who is a doctor of Oriental Medicine. The chiropractic treatments wound up being too aggressive for my body to handle comfortably. But, the acupuncture and massage were definitely helpful.

I continued reading and started incorporating more meditation, herbs, and detoxing/juice feasting into my life. I eliminated some of the stress in my life and decided to treat myself more gently and with more female wisdom and respect. I asked questions as needed and did not let anyone "bully" me into a treatment I did not feel was appropriate for me. I took charge of and full responsibility for my health.

And, as I became more acquainted with myself. My body began to heal. As new information was needed to continue my progress towards better health, I would meet people who would introduce me to someone with the healing touch to help me even more. I found a new chiropractor who practices Nucca chiropractic techniques. It is a totally different and much gentler way to realign your body. I highly recommend it. He has completely eliminated my shoulder and neck pain.

Today, I am a new woman... happier, more radiant, and living proof that you can rise like a phonenix from the ashes of crippling pain and soar again. So, as I continue to dance around my livingroom... laughing... and feeling like Divine energy in motion. I thank God for the opportunity to share my story with each of you. I hope this blog will encourage you to listen to that tiny little voice telling you to slow down and take better care of yourself. Please, do not let a major health crisis become your wake up call. Do something special for yourself today.

Live and Love with no regrets,

Cyndi

I was working today at my friend's Oriental Medicine wellness center and had an interesting conversation with one of his clients.

She is a very accomplished attorney in her mid 30's. She is a beautiful woman with a full life and a modern woman's ambition. The typical "All work and minimal play" syndrome that is destroying the health of this country, especially woman. There is a reason that heart disease not cancer is the #1 killer of woman in this country.

She is coming to the wellness center to receive treatment for fibroid tumors. An unhappy condition which affects 4 out 5 African American, but that is a topic for a different blog.

She is worried because, she has come to a crossroad in her life and is struggling with the realization that she cannot be superwoman and live a truly healthy and fulfilling life. She wants to have a baby and is worried that her time may have passed to enjoy the miracle of motherhood. She feels like her body has begun to betray her and the fibroids may destroy her chances of becoming a mother.

I reassured her that the fibroids can and will be a thing of the past if she continues to follow her treatment plan. A plan that thankfully is all natural and surgery free. I told her that the fibroids are her body's way of saying "slow down" and pay attention to me. And her chances of becoming a mom are not an impossibility. She felt better knowing that she was on the right path.

I started thinking, as women, we can get so caught up in life... i.e. work deadlines, family responsibilities, etc. That we forget to pay attention to our needs. I told her. Woman are trained almost from birth to give... then give some more... and then once you think you have nothing left. We are expected to dig even deeper. The phrase "Give Til It Hurts", is a phrase that describes most women's lives.

We keep overextending ourselves until our poor bodies just give out. Then, instead of slowing down to recharge or deal with the situation. We ignore what is going on until we wind up visiting a health care professional trying to figure out what is wrong. The problem is the traditional doctors and medication can only deal with the symptoms. They cannot treat the cause.

I shared with her a simple truth... It all starts with learning how to appreciate and love yourself. Our emotional, mental, physical, and spiritual health are our responsibility. People and situations may frustrate us, but it is how we choose to handle life that determines the outcome.

People will treat you the way you treat yourself. If you neglect your needs they will too. If you treat yourself with self-respect. Others will treat you with respect as well. I could go on forever with examples, but the point I am trying to make is. We have choices about how we live our life. We cannot be everything to everyone.

Plus, think about this... Before you can fill someone else's proverbial cup. You must be sure your "pitcher" is full. So, ask yourself... Is your "pitcher" empty or full? If you are sitting there empty. Take a moment to think about something special you can do just for you. Something that will cheer you up, make you feel special, and put a smile back on your face.

Be a little selfish every now and then. You deserve it. Plus, your peace of mind and health depend on it.

According to Dr. Erikz Schwartz, hormone expert, some of the biggest health concerns she sees among female patients of color are:

Weight issues, prediabetic conditions, high blood pressure, sexual dysfunction. The thyroid is also under-diagnosed in women of color. If you can't lose weight, it's probably your thyroid that should be tested. These concerns are mostly overlooked or discarded by conventionally trained physicians who have no training or interest in prevention and thus wait until the patient actually comes down with chronic illnesses. Treatment of women in general is still sub par in our country and women of color continue to receive even poorer treatment still.

Divine Wellness: "The Way to Go"

WSW Lady of the Week

Kaysha Reid has a story that is remarkable to say the least. She has used a difficult health condition and transformed it into a testimonial and a motivation. She helps others cope by encouraging them to have overall wellness using biblical principals. In an interview with Major Change Magazine Kaysha said “I have a condition called Alopecia – which is an auto-immune disease that attacks the hair follicles. I was diagnosed at age 19, which was quite difficult for me, because the effects of Alopecia are really emotional and psychological. To lose your hair and be robbed of your self – confidence at age 19 (when you are supposed to be developing into womanhood) can be quite traumatic.” Because of this experience she has grown closer to God in every area of her life. She has dedicated her self to helping others cope through her Divine Wellness Center. This is a place where you can go and find rest, empowerment, support and answers. There is something for everybody there. I love the site so much that I created a group on my network where my members can experience taste of the knowledge that she has to offer. Kaysha is a certified Biblical Health Coach, and she has her teacher certification in meditation. What a great combination!

She has truly been a blessing in my life. Kaysha has taught me so much about integrity, support and humility. When Kaysha says she is going to do something you can believe that it will be done. If she is unable to do it she will let you know as soon as she knows she can’t.As a new network I have been inspired by her site in many ways and I have been blessed to take many ideas form the way she does things, I asked her how she felt about that and she responded “I truly believe there is room for all of us to succeed and so if I can inspire others, then to God be the Glory. Do your thing my sister...”It brought tears to my eyes because that is the true spirit of support. I have received some opposition recently and this type of affirmation meant the world to me. Please if you don’t do anything else today; visit the Divine Wellness Center a place that is dedicated to encouraging a balanced life through a network of Professionals & Individuals with an interest in Health, Beauty and Wellness. This is Life Coach Richetta till the next time be encouraged, be empowered and be yourself!Richetta BlackmonEmpowering Women-“One Lady at a Time”Women Support Women
